It's Virtual Dub. I mean... this program is legendary, who doesn't know about Virtual Dub. The only grip I have with Vdub is the fact that it can't take every format you send to it. If a separate program or plug-in was developed that let you feed pretty much any file into it, and that goes into VDub without any special command=line, the program would be PERFECT.

Renowned for it's overall features but long overdue for a GUI re-design. This is the type of program that should be to be a lot cleaner to use than it actually is. I still have to jog my memory about what frame/marker button does what every-time I run VD. Seriously though, how many years has it been since it's first release? The interface doesn't appear to have have changed one bit. I'm not talking about a complete make-over but I think it could be a lot more user-friendly with a bit of a clean-up, maybe even some customizable skins in addition to the default "Windows-95" one. :)

If anyone is interested... I posted a VDPROF for exporting to MP4, MPEG2 and FLV. There is also a document that explains a lot of pitfalls in VirtualDub as well as the external encoder use and links to the encoders needed and how to set it up. It is using the AVC/AAC codecs at the moment for FLV but the scripts could be expanded since it uses FFMpeg as well. The link is WWW.Budmansite.com and navigate to the VirtualDub section. The pertinent downloads are "*" headed. If anyone cares to try it out.

If the user is not familiar with Virtual Dub imput plugins,I highly doubt that will manage the External Encoders. Most of the world forum for video processing refers to Virtual Dub forum and the one and only guide for External Encoders - of the subject long ago I asked a question and never got an answer.Virtual Dub using for years but External Encoders never managed to start working. According to that instruction, that ordinary people have to go to a school,to overcome in the External Encoders. My advice to users "Tezza1971" : "imput plugins" certainly used to be dragged any format in Virtual Dub - External Encoders forget... used by another program,if you want (except AVI) another output format...greeting...

This is the only program I know which has the most sensible workflow and interface for the job. It certainly doesn't seem like it the first time you use it - in fact it's downright confusing. But once you get your head around it's approach, the workflow is PERFECT. Nothing beats it - not even Sorenson squeeze. Virtual Dub is the best. UNFORTUNATELY... I never ever use it these days because NONE of the source files I work with are supported for import. It does AVI files - that's it. If you got anything else, you're shit-out-a-luck, as they say. My heart bleeds for someone to add support for import plugins - so that emerging formats can be supported. All the conversions I want to do are for my various video cameras - none of which VirtualDub supports. So for now I have to put up with other tools like handbrake which have some of the most retarded workflow/user-interface paradigms in existence :/ Only the good die young :(

There is a new QuickTime input plugin by fccHandler, it doesn't require the QuickTime software like the tateu's one: http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=19488

I just needed to edit an avi video from my webcam without changing the format. VirtualDub did the job without a hitch on the first try. I tried avidemux, also free, but it just mangled my video and never outputted a usable avi file. VirtualDub worked perfectly.

I find this app. absolutely amazing. Considering the price of FREE, and the actual functionality/usefulness, this app. is priceless. I am an amateur and needed an app. to splice an .AVI move i have into chapters. But the .AVI was encoded with VBR MP3, which caused thumbnail problems and syncing issues. With this app. i was able to extract the audio as .WAV, then non-destructively (without encoding), swap out the MP3 and replace with the .WAV. Simply easy to use and EXTREMELY fast because of no encoding. Another app. i highly recommend for editing .AVI files is AviDemux... that is comparable with this app. in terms of usefulness. Oh yea.. there are useful tutorials posted on here if you're a noob like me .. Def. rec!

My need for VirtualDub is simple -- a large window to monitor signals sent into my Belkin VideoBus USB interface, to see what's being played on my VCR as I transfer VHS to a standalone DVD Recorder. I was using Altarsoft Video Capture -- very nice, simple & functional freeware, but the preview window is tiny... and forget about Windows Movie Maker, which only gave me error messages that the video device wasn't available. It just took me a few minutes to figure out I had to go File, Capture AVI (even though I had no intention of recording the signals), select the VideoBus from the Device dropdown, deselect Show Information Panel from the Capture dropdown, and Stretch To Window from the Video dropdown, and voila!

Isn't that the 'File' > 'Save processing Settings' feature? "My only complaint is that there is no apparent way to save a 'setup' (i.e. the filters added and their configuration, the video and audio format settings)"

I'm in the process of converting my VHS library to xVid .avi files. I came across this app a couple of days ago. What a find! My only complaint is that there is no apparent way to save a 'setup' (i.e. the filters added and their configuration, the video and audio format settings)

Great program that I've used for years. Excellent support for codecs and filters. The new DV capture doesn't work well for me though--serious audio sync issues. So I'll still use WinDV for capture. Perhaps the best thing about this program is that it is still being actively developed, and multithreading is being experimentally implemented now.

VirtualDub doesn't work correct with DivX v6.1 when cropping internal (not filter) with DivX6 encoder. If you set crop value 32 for left and 32 for right side, VirtualDub crashes (same when using VirtualDubMod). That doesnt happen with DivX v5.21. For test purposes, I've set those values (crop 32 on left & 32 on right side) manualy into registry: .../DivXNetworks/DivX4Windows/State In this case VirtualDub(Mod) doesn't find DivX codec at all. If other values are applied (16 for example), everything works fine.

The author of VirtualDub has put a lot of effort into improving its performance and I find that the tool gets better and better with each release. I could'nt be without it,easily a 10.
