All reviews for Stoik Video Capture

Based on the high reviews I downloaded it and dived into re-capturing and archiving my old camcorder tapes. The recordings played fine in WMP and MPC. After grabbing one I wanted to enjoy by ripping to MP4 and uploading to my media center, discovered that the STOIK avi files can't be opened by Handbrake or AviDemux. A couple minutes with Google revealed the fact that "type 1" DV files can't be opened by AviDemux. So, no big loss except a bunch of hours of having to capture everything over again with a different free capture program that lets you choose "type 1" or "type 2".

Review:
Controls are a bit confusing to figure out. Output vs Capture?
Drops frames occasionally. Not sure if it's the tape or the computer so unsure of this.
Does the job as long as you don't want to open the DV avi files in free editing tools. (I didn't bother to see whether they open in Sony Vegas Movie Studio).

Stoik is, for the most part, a very good tool. My only complaints are that it tends to drop frames if it is running alongside other applications (e.g. during multitasking) and that the preview window is extremely small (making it hard to see exactly what one is capturing). Despite these complaints, it is the best tool I have come across thus far and I will continue to use it for the foreseeable future.

Excellent program. I just finished an hour+ long capture from a minidv camera and this program kept everything in sync all the way to the end.
It consumes very few system resources and there's simply no better or easier way to capture video in DV format.

Finally! After going through tons of other programs looking for one that can record real-time from my AVerTV Combo PCIe card, I have found one that works well! I can record both video and sound, without sync issues. From now on, this will be the program I'll be capturing through.

The only thing I wish they would add to this is a resizeable or larger preview window. I can barely see what I'm recording. Other than that, the lack of a drop-down menu is not something I really need, as it works without one just fine.

I was looking for an easy to use capture program to go with my old ATI All In One card and this was the best one. The program that came bundled with the card would crash frequently and I had to install codecs on a regular basis. I'd also tried using windows movie maker but the file sizes created were ridiculously huge for the output quality. Pretty simple and straightforward, I used this to transfer an old vhs tape to an avi file and the picture quality was just as good as the original.

PROS - Simple & easy to use.

CONS - No pull down menus (I wish it had these as I had to just type 1.0 in the field above as it was a required field).

I have used this for several months and found it satisfactory. The 2 drawbacks i have seen are that lack of a timer and I had a problem with dropping frames when multitasking. WinDV doesn't seem to drop frames when I open even 2 other windows so i assume this program uses more system resources. I'm running it on a AMD 2400+ with 512meg of ram.
