Never been heavily into encoding so used Handbrake / Vidcoder in the past but recently have started backing up my DVDs after a 3 week crash course in avisynth for an old VHS restoration project. Thought I'd give Ripbot a try as I'd had it lying in a folder for a couple of years and just realised it uses some of the avisynth plugins (is that the correct term for it?). Personally, I use makeMKV to rip the DVD then ripbot to re-encode to x264 and the results are far better video quality and smaller filesize than earlier mentioned programs. I'm deinterlacing Interlaced source (I'm in UK so PAL format), Ripbot crops correctly, then I use MDegrain1 / 400 on all my DVDs with CQ=20, Main 3.1, Slower and yielding around 1GB per hour of film. This is my goto encoder for now.

I use RIPBOT264 to upscaling videos, because its interaction, for the output settings, for audio and video, are very intuitive and easy to handle, in addition, the options of Resize, crop, deinterlace, detelecine , changing framerate and color palette, and applying pre-defined enhancement filters, by avisynth are great and equally easy to use. However, the program, it has some problems, two of them, that make me scare away a little of it, which is the impossibility of ripping dvd's or blurays, and a grotesque error (on my windows 8.1 at least), that, when you directs the program to save the file on the desktop, when it is going to mux the file to mp4 or mkv, it shows an error and does not save the file! Imagine you wait around 4 hours of conversion, and at the final moment, it presents an error? Frustrating no? It's just not frustrating anymore, because if you go to the c: in the temp folder, the ungenerated file is still saved there, just copy and paste it to the desktop and change the file extension to .mp4 or .mkv ( as you pre-defined the first time). However, even with this error, I do not despise the program itself, and its potential, because I understand that with some updates, this can be corrected, moreover, I thank the developers for the program, because it is not easy (as I say in all my reviews), keep an active freeware project.

This software is EXCELLENT, it is way better than anything else I have ever used. Other GUI software I have use had the most basic problems like failure to detect the video size/cropping issues and excessively long encoding time. RipBot264 is very efficient and never has any issues detecting the video size. It also has avisynth filters built in with a simple interface so I was able to remove grain from a very grainy source very simply. It works great with x265 as well.

I highly recommend!!!

The hard work that the authors put in is clear to see.

Been using Ripbot for years. While some people find it too complicated, it's actually simple to set up. Ripbot churns out very high quality videos compared to Handbrake. Most people who complained are usually too lazy to read or too dumb to understand, all they want is a big round button that says click here to convert, sorry but it doesn't work that way noobs.

I don't how this one gets 10/10 reviews, it is not great at all. The GUI is plainly bad, everything is cluttered or basic depending on your viewpoint and the things you must install to get it working. Oh, and it crashes as well periodically. I expected too much from this.

I am getting a message saying that a virus was detected in the exe for RipBot264 1.25.0

its blocking the exe for this app saying that IDP.Generic. for both the Ripbot264 app, and the updater app, is this a false message for does the executables have virus in them? for this version?

I am giving this version half stars since I don't no if its really has a virus or not, I have used older versions of this software and I didn't get a virus message from Avast before for this software.

Have to agree with a lot of the previous reviewer about Handbrake. The variable bitrate preset and subtitles issues are still major pains for most users. Ripbot in many ways is better but also is bad. The dependency thing is a bug bear in ripbot and the gui of the program is just awful. Just a pain to get it up and running. Far from simple.

Review by Selo on Jan 7, 2020 Version: 1.25.0 OS: Windows 8 64-bit Ease of use: 5/10 Functionality: 5/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 5/10

Love the program, hate the dependencies especially the outdated Haali splitter which messes up HEVC decoding There are workarounds eg resetting media foundation to default. Other programs exist that are as good but also have issues. Handbrake is a decent alternative but it has as many faults including weird presets that changes frame rate to variable and by default burns in subtitles, not to mention forcing you to use ass subs (not widely supported on deices other than PC) over simple text. Also Handbrake doesn't use the latest libs for AVC or HEVC unless you use the nightly version which is also still behind by a bit. MeGUI over-complicates things with it's interface but works. Hybrid is unpredictable (sometimes crashes or just straight up fails to start) and also has a steep learning curve. So all in all, RipBot264 is flawed but I'd say 7/10 as it produces excellent results once it's up and working.

Impressive as there are users who dont seem to know read the software description.

If someone wants a simple converter, use Handbrake, it is totally no brain, made for beginner.

RIPBOT is much more robust when it comes to converting using multiple PCs at the same time, I have 5 at home and have always used RIPBOT for a better encoder with better efficiency. It is one of the few freewares that give me this option.

And it's really easy to use, just read 10 minutes and you're done.

Guys are really lazy, want WINBUTTON.

Actually I think it needs the java for subtitles so it is not an integral part of its program coding. That said these extras you need to get it working is a bit of a hassle for quite a few impatient folks who just want to unzip a portable, enter a source and press Go.

Not for me, but it has its merits. However the developer who I'm sure is talented should consider these pitfalls. I prefer Handbrake usually, but in the last few days discovered a great program called Super Simple Video Converter which produces an excellent output in H264 format.

Java is used because it uses superb BDSub2Sup which works with subtitles. Which needs Java to run. I doubt the author uses Java as a code for a software. The author might introduce a feature opting not to have Java installed, with no possibility to work with subtitles.

Btw. It can edit Avisynth script directly, something MeGUI cannot do. This is quite superb feature. MeGui needs to be preset beforehand and only using features it has. In RipBot264 you can tap directly into created avisynth script and fix there whatever you want.

Excellent interface and easy to use. If you stay within the filter choices provided in the GUI, it will perform very well. However, it is really geared more to processing one file at a time. Does not have good batch or Avisynth capability. If you want that, MeGUI is outstanding in those areas. Another plus, for those that need it, is the distributed encoding, which allows you to link other computers to add additional processing speed.

This appears to be a student project (only students choose JAVA in 2018). The GUI system is simple and working, but you'll want to use the shell features as the GUI misses many things. But if you use the shell, then odds are you're only using this for the distributed features. The distributed method seems to be a simple file chuncker.

The dependencies for this are incredibly vast. Considering how the distributed method appears to work, I'm passing and writing my own chunker/net code in C. However, I don't need any of the AviSynth features, so that is something to consider if you need that.

Don't listen to those complaining about the software. If one has a a system in good working order and has all the required pre-requisites installed before running it then the app works no problem. The encode quality is superb and if you understand Avisynth you can even add your own tweaks. What's even more awesome is its distributed encoding feature which allows to spread the encoding load up to 16 systems or if your rig is powerful enough you can enable additional cores on just your local machine to speed up encoding. Finally, I tested it with UHD and doing a conversion from HDR to SDR which takes much longer to encode but the results didn't disappoint.

At first I too experienced a few issues specific to distributed encoding but they were linked to my setup and since then have resolved them. I would encourage troubleshoot if experiencing issues rather than bashing the software which probably is not the source of the problem.

Hello Hai. First off this is a great program and I have used it for a while now. I just upgraded from 1.16.1 to 1.18.1 and noticed huge improvements. I am only having one problem that I can’t solve…. I can’t attach posters.

I figured out what the problem was. the K-lite codec pack from codec guide.com is the problem. I grabbed the codec's I wanted separately and the other stuff required to run the program and it's working now.

You can manually type in the bitrate you want.
Yes this version doesn't play nice with KLite codec pack, just download Haali Media Splitter separately and install it. You may have to reset to default settings to get x265 to play afterward but it will continue to work fine after that.

I have used this program for years. but there is one thing that I don't care about in it. you are always forced to select a preset bit rate. is there any way you can change this so we can enter what we like.
also this new version has problems with the newer K-lite codes pac's. thanks for finally adding x265.

This could not be any easier. I've been using AnyDVD HD for years and never knew it could rip Blu-Ray. I've always used Handbrake for everything.
Install the supporting software and run the RipBot as an executable.
Pack a lunch, I'm using a high-end i7 laptop and it takes 3 hours to transcode. This is a CPU intensive process.
I've had no errors or crashes. Thanks to Gizmodo for steering me here.

Brilliant piece of software very easy to use and completely free, what more could you ask for? Didn't even need to use a guide just figured it out. Outstanding.

The only downsides I can see is that the encoding options are buried in the "properties" button, a separate easy-to-notice-better-labelled button would be helpful, also unlike some tools the program cannot encode on the fly, it has to demux video and audio tracks to a temp folder before it can start encoding, before in fact you can't even look at possible parameters or encoding options - if the movie is a large one that can be a long time sitting watching paint dry. Amen.

N.B. if you're having problems with it don't whine about it here ASK on the forums either here or on the developers thread on the doom9 forums.

I can now split the encode between my 980x and 2500k and I am seeing drastically reduced encoding times (30-40% reduction). Thinking about building a couple more boxes to really set it on fire...

I just discovered this app a week ago and ran into a small problem after a few successful conversions. I rip my (yes, I own them) BD movies with anydvd-hd to the drive, remux them with tsmuxer(gui), and then convert to .mkv files. Again, the first few titles went smoothly. Then a problem with ripbot communicating with ffdshow popped up: i googled and found a potential solution of un- and re-installing ffdshow.

The communication problem went away, but then ripbot went through the demuxing stage and then just sat at the 100% state (and thereby wouldn't allow me to change the Encode settings).

I un-installed ripbot and its four required components, did a fresh re-install, and ran it. Now, it again processes the file in total. After 8-hours of processing, it claims the job is complete; however, there isn't an mkv file in the destination folder. Yes, i double-checked the job settings. It's just not there--there's only a video (audioless) file in the temp job folder.

Anyone experience this? time to un- and re-install again.

As a follow-up to my previous post about RipBot264v1.16.5.7z. Take note of the new comment added by the author or VH admin about needing the newest version of 7-zip.

"NOTE! You must extract latest version with 7-zip 32bit version!"

That note wasn't there when I originally posted my problem but I might also add that although I had a pretty recent version of 7-zip v9.20 32 bit, I needed to download 7-zip v9.23 Beta for it to work. Everything extracts ok with that version. I'm not sure what's different but it worked.

I'm trying RipBot264v1.16.4 as the *.7z file for version 1.16.5 throws up over 430 errors when trying to extract resulting in all the extracted files being 0 bytes. Got this with all download links tried.

I get the same error with this app as with so many other apps that use the yadif filter for deinterlacing: Avisynth error: Not An Avisynth 2 C Plugin: C:\Downloads\RipBot264v1.16.4\Tools\AviSynth plugins\Yadif\Yadif.dll

The only way I've ever been able to get yadif to work when writing my own scripts is using 'Load_Stdcall_Plugin'. 'LoadCplugin' just won't work, whatever version of Avisynth I install. I have no idea why this is. So unfortunately I can not fully try this app out as it won't encode. Loading and making changes etc work fine, it just doesn't do anything when I come to encode because of the problem I get with yadif not loading using 'LoadCplugin'.

Great little piece of software very inuitive. Unfortunately I only figured out about an error through these "comments". DON'T CHANGE THE OUTPUT DIRECTORY!! I wanted it to save > Desktop and I changed the name from 00017 to the name of the BD Movie and after 2.5 hours of exciting anticipation, the movie file never popped up onto my desktop. I've learned my lesson and drag/rename movies AFTER they've been output into the default folder.

That should be a MAJOR bug oversite! the temp folder that's demuxing should automatically spit out the encoded file anywhere the User sees fit.

No offense to the creator of this software, but if CloneDVDmobile supported Blu ray encoding, I would totally go with them. But alas I will bite the (free)bullet and use this.

Still an A+ Product!

This is a very versatile piece of software. I had previously used this to successfully convert hd-dvds and bluray to mkv with 5.1 surround sound. Just yesterday I realized it had the ability to take a preexisting mkv file with subtitles and convert it to a hardcoded mp4 file. My ultimate destination for this is my ZUNE. Unfortunately it doesn't go to wmv but the zune software will take the mp4 from ripbot and convert it so my zune 30gb will play it. And the best part is the subtitles are intact on the converted file (zune doesn't support selectable subtitles that I know of so they must be hardcoded). This standard def support to go "backwards" so to speak adds another great dimension to this excellent software. Plus it has batch encoding to boot (plus great feature that as you add consecutive files it remembers your initial settings from your first encoding profile you set for the current batch - though you have to manually select the subtitle for each video - but it automaticlly detects the srt file that was in the mkv - soft sub that it hardcodes into the resulting mp4 file). ALL in all great software - kudos to the developers - only downside is the insistance on turning off uac controls on vista - wish it didn't do that....

Only other downside to me is some labeling doesn't seem to be as straight forward - some selection buttons aren't marked and you have to explore a little to find some settings - but overall well laid out and relatively intuitive aside from that minor detail....

I just upgrade from 1.14.2 to 1.14.3. And boy, what a difference. Very pleased with the new 1.14.3 version.

I like that 64bits x264 is now ON by default. I used to have to replace the 0 with 1 to take advantage of 64bits computing.

// it will use 64bit version of x264 on 64bit Windows. Up to 10% faster encoding speed. May not work sometimes.
Usex264x64=1

1st pass speed is almost twice as fast as previous version 1.14.2, jumps from 15fps to 27-35fps (this is decent for a dual core cpu encoding at 1920x800). The only complain i have is the 2nd pass. No improvement over previous version 1.14.2. Still stuck between 5~6fps on 2nd pass.

I love ripping bluray to 1080p mkv. Auto crop, 2-pass @ 16,000bitrate. xXcopy audio stream

I have windows vista ultimate 64-bits.
Intel E8500 dual cores OC to 4.22ghz
4gb g.skill 1066mhz ddr2

I would love it if x264 engine improve the speed on 2nd pass. Anyway, great work and keep up the great job.

One suggestion though (I guess it is really two): Accept a raw (already De-Muxed VC1) stream and Output (without muxing in audio) a RAW h.264 file. I end up using the video.264 file instead of the mp4 output file. Or even better, mux the raw video and converted AC3 audio to an m2ts container (would save me a step).

Hi all,
many thx to this fantastic tool. I've used it for a couple of month and i have to say it creates superb results.
The only thing i discovered lately with the latest version corrupt audio with evo files. Since i'm from time to time converting HDDVDs it was no problem with former versions of ripbot264. With the latest version it seems that E-AC3 sound can not be converted or separated into proper 5.1 AC3 sound. I do not get after demuxing in ripbot an option saying 5.1. sound available. only 2 channel sound and if i choose that my dvico 6500 won't play sound at all? On the other hand on the pc the sound is there but seems not a proper standard format.
Any suggestions to that?
thx so much

This is a truly great program that finally does what people have wanted (converting hd-dvd/Blu-Ray with ease). I was using 1.10.5 for a while and had absolutely no issues.

I have finally upgraded to 1.11.0 and well it's a bit dodgy for me. It will skip the video encoding aspect and create nothing. A restart of the program will sometimes fix it, but overall it's quite annoying.

Other than this gripe with the latest version, I have nothing but praise for this fine little piece of free software.

This tool does a terrific job of ripping DVD's and Blue Rays offering tremendous results with an easy to use format. While I wish it offered more avisynth options, it does a great job with what it does offer and lives up to it's description of giving you an easy way to back up (already decrypted) Blue Ray files into 26 files with a wide range of options. The previous comment from December of last year is for an old version. The new one has versions for conversion up to 640kb audio.

Does what it says it will. Only problems I see are:

1. No pause button. Encoding to h.264 takes a long time ripping from a DVD. So a pause
button could really come in handy.

2. No audio bitrate option for more than 128.

3. Subtitles. I didn't see a way of manipulating font size, color, etc. I guess an
external subtitle editor is needed.

Overall, thumbs up for a cool little program that costs nil.

very nice tool for PSP and console encoding, has all the function of megui, but is far simpler. Also includes the AQ (adaptive quantization patch) which many feel improves the issue of blocking in high bitrate encodes (if you dont like, it can of course be turned off).

a great bit of software for console and general 264 encoding.
