Truly expensive Bloatware which wrecks your system after an uninstall!

They broke it.

I used to use Nero Video to author BluRays. The menus it creates are kind of ugly and can't be made better without paying
extra money, and the software seemed to bloat my videos up to where they filled a disc rather quickly (but it had "Fit to
disc"), and the software made me do some things that didn't seem necessary, but oh well, it worked.

Until I downloaded an update. Now, the "Fit to disc" no longer works. They appear to have hard-coded a number of bytes
that should fit on a BluRay, and use that instead of the actual size of my legitimate BluRay media. You can ask for the
"Fit to disc" and watch the software happily transcode for hours, and then die when it finally notices the size of the
disc in the burner, as it's about to do a burn. I reported this to Nero - crickets.

Given how a 5Gb mp4 video seems to expand to 15Gb on a BluRay, "Fit to disc" was the only way to get a reasonable amount
of content onto a disc, but that's now utterly broken because some wag made a bad software decision. It's useless now.
I'll still use other parts to burn regular files to disc, but I have no good way to author.

Nero video is not made for ripping blu ray...

I'm trying to author a blu ray using nero video with multiple subtile tracks (importing m2ts with video audio and multiple subtitle streams), but subtitles are not supported! TERRIBLE FOR PAID SOFTWARE! I believe the only way to have subtitles is to encode them with nero recode (burn in). I will definitely go back to free MultiAVCHD, atleast it converts almost any subtitle format to pgs, has named chapters support, only has problems with TrueHD audio.

I agree with the previous poster, qz3fwd; Nero AG no longer sells software that will directly play a Blu-Ray disc in a Blu-Ray drive in a computer. I encountered this firsthand as I described here on Nero AG's forum: http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics/purchased-i ...

What adds insult to injury is that if you attempt to view a Blu-Ray disc with Nero Essentials or MediaHome the software launches an advert that says,

"Want to enjoy your high definition movies from Blu-ray discs?

Nero Blu-ray Player enables you to playback Blu-ray and AVCHD discs in razor-sharp clarity and optimized HD Audio and Dolby (R) surround quality. It also supports additional streaming content on BD Live discs.

To access Blu-ray playback functionality in Nero Blu-ray Player a purchase is required. Click the "Info" button to find our offer."

With both ads after clicking the "Info" button one is redirected via weblink to purchase "Nero 2016 Platinum". This is despite the fact that none of Nero's current software offerings have Blu-Ray disc player functions. In my personal opinion; this is not only misleading, but also deceptive and fraudulent advertising. Despite that this situation has been reported on Nero AG's own forums on multiple occasions, they still haven't taken any substantive action correct the misleading web link redirects.

Nero 2016 DOES NOT include the Blu Ray player application anymore and it is not obviously stated anywhere!

That is why I voted the suite at an overall score of 5.

Nero Vision Extra Issues

Error when using cuda with ps3 profile (when avc profile is used, no error)

Ps3 Profile settings for quality bitrate is stuck at 256 kbit/s when moving slider, and never displays actual change when moving slider

If moving the quality bitrate slider in ps3 profile to top level (256 kbit/s shown in settings) after finishing selection, the final “output file” information displays 100 kbit/s and at the lowest level will show 10 Kbit/s, even though the slider shows no change in the actual settings menu

Lc-aac 5.1 audio is stuck at 77kbs, not acceptable for this type of audio ( he-aac comes out at 73 kbs which is in the acceptable range)

All settings and profiles that do actually work are encoded as a file saved with .0001 at the end which is unrecognizable for ps3 and probably a lot of other forms of players ( If only the avchd encoding with dolby digital was recognizable by my ps3 )

Avc profile has a functioning quality bitrate slider, but when choosing to opt for the target file size the “out file” information shows 256 kbit/s and it encodes at that bitrate as well , regardless of the targeted file size inputted.

Contact with nero support is usless.

Stick with mediacoder, nero 9 would burn blu-ray disks but had no feature to play blu-ray content and they never addressed that issue, I'm almost certain none of these issues will be addressed either in nero 10 most importantly the fact that lc-aac audio is stuck at 77 kbps

videohelp still has it but I wonder why Nero took down their latest release 9.4.26.0b?
i upgraded to v9 because i had v6 forever and vista needed the update. Still decent software but i would wish they would have added mkv to recode or nerovision. The MP3pro plug-in i purchased with v6 doesn't work with v9 and the patent activations are a PITA.

If you're thinking about buying nero 9 i would recommend you download the apps below as they do pretty much what nero 9 can - and more. All you need to do is create a GUI for a 'smartstart' to launch the individual apps haha. Cheers.

I have used Nero 9. for quite awhile now. I only find one fault with it. I always (to save disk) try to burn 2 movies at a time. However, if the 2nd movies runs over the dvd capacity, it will not warn you when you load the movies into it. Therefore, if you have exceeded its capacity the last of your moview will be cut off. Other than that, I consider it a good program, but I think you should install in a manual mode. Doing this, you can not install a lot of the bloted sofeware that you may never use.

Paid for the blu-ray plugin, doesn't work.
Asked for support - no answers.
Bottom line - keep away , dont throw your money.

Nero Burning Rom still has the same user interface and annoying lack of time saving features, I pray each night for something innovative such as:-

- Write Method (TAO,DAO) Automatic Switching to DAO when TAO Fails.
- Real Time Total SIZE-TO-BURN data at bottom of screen with XXX-TOO-MUCH-DATA Values.
- Automated DELETION of Tagged Files for this Sessions Burn (much needed Aid to Archiving Backups)
- Automated Date Setting.
- Filename Length Editor (Highlighting Length Errors in RED before Burn attempts ! ).
- Simplified Icons for Successful and Failed Burns at Completion of a Burn, It seems a chore to read and find out if a Burn was Successful or not.
- Overburn on DVD Disable message - Because this isn't Possible still....?

Nero has added so many complex and innovative features to its suite, however the simple things above would make Nero Better !

I use this optional package that comes with Nero burner-ware .
Well , actually I only use Nero Recode as a replacement for DVD Shrink . Does a much better job preparing dvd discs for personal dvd movie burns .Very good.
Tried other options ...capturing,dvd authoring , mpeg1 to mpeg2 dvd conversion ,etc. , but they're not my thing (lot's of trial & error involved)
Don't use anything else (dvd player , basic photo imaging , etc.), they're too simple and boring .

The problems with the software are certainly due somewhat to bugs, and hasty releases, but the majority of the problems I read below are OPERATOR ERROR. Be prepared to spend a few DAYS, not minutes, learning this software and video authoring in general if you want to successfully make your own videos with menus etc. Indeed, this applies to ANY video authoring software, not just NeroVision. You will likely need a few tools as well; for instance I recode everything with SUPER first since one of NeroVision's faults is its buggy internal video codecs. I mean really, blaming the software for stupid errors like trying to play a PAL encoded video in a DVD player that only understands NTSC is ludicrous! And if you are too dense to select FIT TO DVD from the format menu then you are too dense to author your own DVD videos. 'nuff said.

I signed up just to say this. The Nero Vision tool in ultra edition is so bad that when you export it even in the default format, the transtions are out of timing and sometimes the clips doesn't match the music. MY PC performance is great but the tool randomly pisses me off. I am a pro at editing and this product sucks big time! The conversion options mostly let you export a 4 minute file which ends up being 2GB! The product is messed up. I HATE NERO!

Working great, just stick with working version for you.

If somebody don't want install all software come with Nero 7
other unofficial versions of install exist.
Nero 7 Lite 33MB and Nero 7 Micro 20MB:

In official version, you have option to chose what

Nero 7 is an example of how to screw up a good tool. I think they need to rethink what the hell are they doing with the tool. it is so much bloated now that it discourages me to use the tool.

Nero hasn't had a decent version since 7.5.7.0. Since that version, I have had a difficult burning a DVD without block address errors. No problem at all with 7.5.7.0. Nerovision created an .nrg file that was completely unburnable by Nero at all. Not a good release.

This is the only program I ever found that could copy a DVD or make one from scratch that would actually play in my Desktop Go Video DVD\Video player.

It states mmatter of factly in the owner's manual that the player did not support DVDR's or DVDRW's at all. No on CDRW's as well. For years I tried anyways as a way of learning DVD and CD science and I learned a lot.

But Nero learned even more and it makes flawless copies of retail movies and I can make em from scratch with no effort or time investment.

I will be a Nero Serial # owner until Nero stops doing business or I stop watching moviies.............Straight up!

I finally uninstalled Nero from my PC. I run Windows Media Center Edition 2005, and Nero tries to emulate some of Media Center's functions. This may be OK on a non-Media Center PC, but it is just redundant on mine. Also, I kept getting Windows errors for various Nero files conflicting with Windows DLLs and causing things to not work, such as my TV Tuner card. ImgBurn works just as well, if not better, for burning ISO images. I removed Nero about a month and a half ago, and I haven't missed it.

Overpriced sack of bloatware, but unfortunately indispensible because it burns almost any disc image you can find. I wish you could buy just Burning ROM and the disc tools for about half the price, then it would be good. Also, if you get a version that works well, don't be tempted to update it, because updates are buggy more often than not.

I've used every version of NERO. Version 7xxxx is the buggiest burning software I have ever used. It leaves nero.exe and nero indexers loaded in the task manager after the program has closed. If you open the program again, it will leave multiple instances running after the program has closed. Nero tech support only responds by advising to use the "Nero Clean Tool" for removal, and then reinstall. This doesn't work. I wish I had saved my money on this upgrade. I'm going back to version 6.6.

I've been a happy Nero 6 user, then came Nero 7. It may be just me and my rig but upon installation, Nero 7 promptly messed up my burning projects. It coughed up the media I've been using successfully with Nero 6. My trusty old BenQ finally produced its first coaster. Even my LiteOn and LG writers would perform VERY erratically when I used to be such a happy camper with them using Nero 6. Uninstalled 7, reinstalled 6, now everything is back the way it was. No more coasters again. I guess I wouldn't be touching Nero 7 until I see a consensus of people terribly happy with it.

I've had one and only one problem with the Nero Suite, but it is a killer: when burning, the program fools you into thinking it can burn a DVD at the 4.37 Gig level. That is the number the software always comes up with if you ask it to automatically configure the bit rate for conversion. However, the thing is so stupid that it never works. It figures the disc space by itself, and then tells you it can't burn it. Yes, it says it's a "power calibration" error. Hahaha. No, it's not the drive, and it's not the media. It's you, Nero creeps.

However, if you lower the space to 4.34 gigs, things work fine.

What a joke!

Nero 6.6 Ultra is a defacto standard tool. It is absolutely absurd that Ahead to date has not gotten Nero 7 together to be stable or worth upgrading to ... I mean what the &^*^^*#@#! are they doing? I don't know anyone who wants 7.

When are the boys at Ahead going to get "ahead" of the game and make an online updater that actually works? I am sick and tired of running the Nero Product Setup tool every time there's an update and finding that it is incapable of updating the currently installed version (in this case from 7.5.7.0 to 7.5.9.0) Either the bloody thing is looking for some pre-existing installation file which it alleges it can't find (even though Ahead have decided to take 500MB of your hard drive to store the last installation package in your temp directory - AND retain a pointer to it in the registry!) OR it just sods around for ten minutes and then coughs up "Connection Error"

Every single time with this product I have to uninstall and re-install from scratch. Every time I have to download another 150MB+ of installer. Come on Ahead ... if Microsoft, Symantec and every other software company on Earth have got to grips with incremental updates that work, surely you can manage to do the same! If you can't get it to work then admit your shortcomings and take the bloody thing out!

My score goes from 9 down to 5 because of the non-functional online update.

Again Ahead has released a version (7.5.7.0) that is not stable. It caused XP to crash (BSD) and created conflicts with many of my other SW, among them Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. I had no problems with 7.5.1.1.

Strangely enough I managed it to work on Vista RC2 without conflicts. However, I do not have many SW installations on that machine.

Nero v6 had all stable releases, why not return to quality?

I have used Nero since V.5. I have never had a problem with any release. Not one. The problems people keep referring are likely caused by a lack of ability and/or problems with the O.S., not with Nero itself. I can honestly say I don't recall ever having burned a coaster. I don't pretend to be an expert on burning Cd's or DVDs. Nero is the expert and it has never failed me. Kudos to the staff at Ahead.

Decided to take the plunge on Nero 7 after using v.6 for a long time. I wanted to wait for a newer version of v.7 so they could work out some of the bugs I've heard so much about.

BIG mistake.

This program is very unstable, and many of the buttons do not work. After burning data discs (DVD) the program hangs and I have to use the task manager to close it. Did not even try NVE or any of the other apps - if the most basic functions are buggy, then I can't imagine how bad the others are.

Back to v.6 now and everything's fine.

Buyer beware of Nero 7!

For those of you experiencing the infamous audio skip bug when burning audio CDs from mp3s in Nero 7, you can:

Copy and paste the mp3pro.dll file from version 6 into version 7, thus replacing the bad one in version 7,

or...

install version 7.2.7.0, which finally fixes the problem.

When recoding an AVI, the auto-compression calculation is incorrect and it creates an image that is too large and will not fit on a DVD.

Up until 6.6 everything was working fine. But I am having problems with Version 7.2.0.3b_eng. When I create an audio compilation, I am unable to add some mp3 files to it. It asks me for a dedicated plugin.

I reverted back to Nero 6.6.3 and all is well again.

I have successfully used Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express for years. Seems to be hit or miss for a lot of people - either you have no problems whatsoever or have nothing but problems. A great lesson in regards to upgrading the software is to wait at least a year after a new version comes out - by that time they will have sorted out most of the bugs.

In response to the comment below, one must take into context that this tool is NERO BURNING ROM - that means that it only burns. The shrinking is probably being done by Nero Recode, or possibly NeroVision Express, and as such, the comments are not overly valid for this tool.

This has to be the worst, most bugged program I have every used. Nero is like a virus on you computer and it causes problems with other programs. When I use Nero to shrink a dvd my computed crashes and every other upgrade of this software does not work. Buy a simple DVD burn program so you have extra money for more DVD-Rs.

The new version really sucks...it cant convert properly vob files to dvd , especially PAL to NTSC. The older version is better

Ive been a user of Nero since 5.5. I tried 7.0 but went back to 6.6 because 7 does not support lightscribe (althought it says it does, it really doesnt). Other than that, its a great burning program.

Not sure what gazzaa and Nerd3D are talking about. I have version 4.1.9.13 of Nero Vision, and it has all the DVD-authoring function it had in the previous version. When I select DVD-vidoe, it shows a legened that the plug-in had been detected and is operating. Could there be problems about detecting the plug-in on some sytems?

I have also sent nero to the recycle bin after 7.0 was released, currently using some great freeware utils, to do exactly same and more than nero. (like divx + xvid)

the 100+ megabyte updates were also a factor with quitting nero.

If you intend to work with DVD's keep looking. This software no longer has the capability to author or recode DVD. (Evidently it's an extra cost add-on now) This support seems to have been silently pulled as the previous "Update" had this functionality. I paid for this function. I'll be contacting my Credit Card company. this stinks of a bait n' switch scam and I want my money back.

Even in the previous builds the UI was jerky and sluggish. How is it free ware tools like VirtualDub and blow away big ticket items such as Roxio and Nero. Sad.

Have just downloaded the latest up-date of Nero Ultra 7.0.5.4. Once installed the DVD convertor within Nero Vision seems to have disapeared. It states that a plug-in needs to be purchased, even though the website says it comes with the original set up software. (Must have done I've been using it). Have now reverted back to the previous 'up-grade', and the DVD convertor/burner is back.Along with numerous other faults (eg the first released version shut down when the ROM burner was used),I would have thought that the Nero people would have checked the validity of their realease's before putting them on their web site.

I have been a user of Nero since version 4.0 and have had no problems at all. I use to be a Roxio user but no longer, Roxio is overpriced and low performance. I would not spend my money on the new release. I paid for my Nero 7.0 online and was able to get it going very quickly. Yes the updates are always great and yes they are big to download but with a Cable modem you shouldn't have any problems. Good job Ahead staff.

I used Nero Ultra 6.6 Photo Express to store photos from my digital camera. I did not notice until too late that Photo Express corrupted the Jpeg files so no other program could use them. I then tried to get Photo Express to export them and even Photo Express cannot restore the photos. I have been contacting their help desk in the US and Europe for more than a month and they have not yet been able to restore the photos to a useable format. As of now, I have lost 80 photos because of Nero Photo Express, and I do not recommend anyone buying it. I'll be glad to email one of the corrupted photos to anyone that thinks they can solve the problem. I'm still waiting to hear back from Nero in Europe.

Speaking to NERO7/DVD/NeroVision specifically; also some comments about Nero7 in general which may become dated. None of these comments apply to Nero6 except where noted:

The Nero7 version of NeroVision is a total disaster. In a nutshell, the end-product doesn't work. DVDs made with this utility have inoperable menus. The Nero6 version of this utility worked quite nicely. I don't know what Nero thinks they are doing in this latest release. Clearly it is an early beta version of the software, not a real product, and is chock full of bugs. They respond very slowly to both succinct or detailed bug reports, and when they do, their responses are uselessly brief, point to one of several obviously canned responses, and which makes clear they didn't really read the submitted bug report at all. Often, the canned answer ends with something like this: "We have an issue which will be addressed in an (unspecified) upcoming release." -With their "issue" being a major tool of Nero7 Ultra Edition doesn't work.
In other words, they don't really seem to care.
Also, as of now, several updates of the Nero7 upgrade later, the software still calls itself "Nero7 DEMO" even though it has the bought and paid for serial. Mind, it works like the regestered version, but its disconcerting that it doesn't even know what it is. Finally, the update software, which worked well with Nero6, and worked with individual components, are clumsily activated, and done en masse, in a single huge download. On top of that, 'update' (when you find it) does not work the way it is supposed to and a barrage of error messages ensues.
My strong recommendation is to AVOID NERO7 like the plague, until they have resolved numerous and serious bugs. They are moving slowly, so this may be a LONG time.
The only other components of NERO7 which I have significant experience with are BurningROM and RECODE, which work OK. However, NeroVision (Nero7) is a disaster. I can't speak to the rest of the package because I had not occasion to use them -however NeroVision is one of the lynchpins of the package.
A shame, because Nero6, repeat SIX, was actually decent for the most part. Disappointing for me, because I was looking forward to some nice things promised in Nero7.

Version 7 works very well. All cd I put were burned successfully.

Only one bad thing: when updating to a new release, you need to uninstall the previous version (7.0.0.0 to 7.0.1.2) and uncompressing the cabs files to temp dir takes ages.

I've been an exclusive user of Nero since version 5.5. I upgraded from version 6.6 several days ago and I cannot get it to successfully burn a CD (TDK 420N burner). I have tried different formats, media & program options and all I have to show for it is a large collection of caosters. DVD burns work fine. I have removed 7 and reinstalled 6.6 and it works great.

The only useful tool in this package is Nero Recode,even then I dont trust it,as Nero always have many bugs up their sleeve.The rest of this package is crapware and dont work.
So save money and use DVDShrink for transcoding and other DECENT freeware tools for the rest.

I just the love NeroVision Express very esay to use, i use it mostly for Batch AVI to DVD, if you have the right setting it will give pretty good pic 8 out or 10 thats without the main menu. will say it wont give the BEST picture but comes very close, again that with the right setting.

1. Best Quality encoding. But slow (compared to Proshow Gold).
2. Nice UI. Though there are some neglected points. Easiest to use.
3. Not enough "Text" abilities (I keep saying, make it just like Power Point slide - "WordArt" and "Text Box").

I updated to 3.1.0.14 from 3.08 I think my old version was, it was 3.*8 something, anyway, this one transcodes avi files about 40% slower. On the old version I used it probaly at least 3 times a week to make a DVD with 3 700 mb avi files and it would take 1.5 hrs consistently, this one is taking 2.5, it mayt be that I had some options turned on in the old version but it doesn't seem like it, also there's no option to not create a menu like there was in the old one. The only plus, and you may consider it a big one, that I've seen so far is that it responds and properly aborts during hte transcoding phase, which the old one would never do, I always had to reboot(couldn't even kill it with win task mgr) though the transcoding would stop, the app wouldn't. I have a p4 3.4C 800 mhz fsb 1 gig corsair XMS DDR 400.

I got Nero Ultra 6.6.0.13 on Ebay for $10.99 + $3.99 shipping and $1.99 insurance. For under $17, I can author, edit, make slideshows, encode, you name it. The program is feature packed and has not failed me yet. Not a single bug or crash.

I previously was hung up on using the freeware, and realized why it's free. On top of crashes and lack of functionality are the hours you will spend figuring it all out. The time I saved not screwing around with freeware toys alone is worth my 17 bucks.

Easily rated this one a 10.

Has a problem importing all files from VR-recorded discs.

Example (3 Titles from Sony HX-900 recorded in VR mode in which commercials had been removed)
1. Title 1: All .vobs imported except the last .vob.
2. Title 2: All .vobs imported except the last .vob.
3. Title 3: All .vobs imported except the last .vob.

So, I ended up with 3 tv episodes without the epilogue for any of them. Fortunately I have another program, and used it to import ALL .vobs from the DVD.

NeroVision Express's problems only pertain to the importing of VR material. Once things are there, the program functions normally -- you just have to use another program, like TMPGEncXpress 3 to import the VR .vobs.

After installing this version in windows media player 10 the proper mpeg-2 decoding does not take place. And error list is shown. If you just play the DVD in media player or nero showtime the same problem arises.
I think the MPEG-2 encoding and decoding problems since persist in this version I have installed Nero Burning Rom Ultra 6.6.0.13 along with the above version and still the problem persisit and I am not able to watch the DVDs DVDs are region free. Produces very good DVD output with a minimum of hassle and good speed. Ability to encode AC3 audio is a big plus.

Only real weaknesses are:
a. no batch mode;
b. can't Suspend or Hibernate computer during encoding;
c. occasional audio sync problems (albeit from input files of dubious quality) with no way to correct them;
d. no way to automatically normalize audio volume (just a crude manual volume adjustment), and
e. installation issues that sometimes occur.

For those esperiencing problems, I recommend the following steps:
1. Complete removal of *all* Ahead Nero software.
2. Use *all* of the Nero Clean Tools (on the Ahead website at Downloads -> Tools) to *completely* clean the system.
3. New clean install of Nero and NeroVision Express. I recommend version 6.6.0.8 and 3.1.0.0 respectively (rather than the later 6.6.0.12 and 3.1.0.0d).

This program was all I used until one day. Suddenly every DVD I tried to burn would fail, destroying the DVD. So I worked around the problem using dvdsanta to burn. But weeks later the program would crash for no reason when I tried to convert and create menus. I do not recommend this program as it is the most unstable program I have ever used.

This, the main Nero package works fine for me... does what it's supposed to do.

The rest of "Reloaded" (Nero Vision Express, Recode, Showtime, etc.) constitute a bloated, buggy mess. Half the software doesn't even work on my system at all, and crashes as soon as you do anything.

I think Nero has bitten off more than they can chew with this new "bloated, buggy suite" approach they seem to have taken lately. I liked the old Nero a lot better, when they offered functional products that did a few things (like burning!) very well. What happened guys?

Just pressing "play" button on any screen with a player visible caused immediate crash on my system. Showtime app exits immediately with "Can't play DVD" message (no explanations, just obtuse error message).

In short, nothing works. The main Nero package seems to work fine for me, but whoever designed/programmed NVE needs to go back to highschool C programming course. Pfooey!

I'm surprised to read so many users saying the MPEG2 quality of this tool is "very good". I recently needed to convert some DV files to MPEG2 so I spent several days testing different encoders and comparing encoded clips, screen captures, etc. I was very disappointed in the quality of Nero Vision Express 3.

The video clip I tested was standard DV from a Sony camcorder. The sections with medium to dim lighting are where NVE really seems to have the most noticiable problems. The ouput looks MUCH more grainy than with other encoders.

I would rate the encoders I tested in this order.

1. CinemaCraft Basic ($58) - Excellent, but not a lot of output configuration options
2. TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress ($58) - Very Good. Not quite as good as CCE, but it comes with more options.
3. MainConcept ($149) - Tons of config options, but the output is average quality and looked a little grainy.
4. NeroVision Express ($70) - Grainy and not very good.

Also, the DVD menu creation tool in NVE is pretty simple but not very flexible. For example, you can't even change font size on the DVD menus.

The Nero Ultra Edition package is one of the best when it comes to CD/DVD burning and I love Nero Recode 2, but NeroVision Express is not really worth using.

It works okay, but beware if you have a SONY DVD Burner, because the default size seems to be about 4M too big. It works okay with TDK. Clone seems to be more functional, Shrink is more functional with regard to menus, and Shrink's compression seems better on my systems.

After downloading and using this software I can disclose a nice comparison test.
The movies used were High Quality Divx & Xvid of Shrek & harry Potter.
The comparison also includes testing "WinAvi" and "VSO DivxToDVD" versus Nero Vision Express.

Pros:
1)Mpeg2(DVD) video encoding is excellent.If you have Divx or Xvid movies with bitrate of 1000 or higher you can be rest assured of seeing no Blocking nor pixelation(Unlike the other two competitors.

2)Video quality setting can be done manually and even if "Standard" is selected, a really great quality DVD will be generated or you can customize "ANY" bitrate that might suite you depending on the quality of your video source.

3)Excellent Transfers and decent Menue creation is possible.

4)Accurate aspect ratio and video format(PAL or NTSC) can be selected manually.

Cons:
1)AVI (Divx, Xvid) with AC3-5.1 Audio can not be directly transfered and only AC3- 2 channel(stereo) is available for output!!! ( or huge PCM audio = even worse!!!)

2) U.S $100.00 for this software is not reasonable and an intensive is needed to encourage users... or addition of Direct AC3-5.1 channel audio like some cheaper competitors.

On top of video DVD's; this program makes killer slide shows on DVD with a full range of transitions and music. You can elect random transitions or pick the exact transition between each slide. You can individually set any slide or transition time. Builds titles just like a video DVD. Unlike the Nero Photoshow Ellite which can not burn transitions or music to a VCD, this part of NeroVision works great. I have friends in a local photography club that have been very impressed with the slide shows that NeroVision produces. I have no complaints with the video dvd process either except that the user manual is for Version 2.0 and could be a little more detailed.

I was a little leery of this program because quite a few users have reported problems (not so much here but elsewhere). However, I figured it wouldn't hurt to download the trial of the current version. Somewhat to my surprise, every component of Nero 6 Ultra Edition that I've tried works great. The only glitch I've encountered is that NeroVision has problems with material that's been ripped from commercial DVD's using DVD Decrypter etc... the video and audio get out of sync. Other than that, no difficulties at all. DV captures from my camcorder are perfect.

I'd suggest that anybody who is interested in Nero Ultra Edition download the trial and give it a shot. If it works for you, it's one heck of a deal... NeroVision alone is worth the price of the whole program suite.

Nero gave me virtually coaster-free service for years, up until version 6.6.0.3. With that version, CDs still burned okay, but _every_ DVD burn aborted or produced an unreadable disk.

Reverting to version 6.6.0.1 restored the familiar reliability.

Very easy to use, I love the fact that you can make your own buttons and backgrouds for the menu, very cool...the only problem I have is that when I burn serveral VCDs to one DVD disc, after the conversion etc, it turned out that both languages on the VCDs are playing together, hitting the L/R audio button cannot get rid of one of the language...other than this , this software is perfect and I highly recommend it.

Nerovision Express 3 has the 'smart encode' option that won't re-encode already compliant files.. I recently captured from VHS using Virtualdub, and used TMPGEnc Plus to encode. 2 Hours of video, took 30 minutes to make an image file (I mount and play before I burn). Easy to make menus and chapters, great experience! Played fine on a standalone with great quality.

The new version detects macrovision and converts your video files in digital squares, so when you get your dvd you get the menu and digital squares instead of files.Stuck with older versions.

2paul_g: Dude, you *can* install just Nero Burning ROM if that's all you want or need. I in fact have done just that. I agree that all the other crap the full Nero Reloaded version comes with is all bloated garbage that no-one needs (especially with the existence of helpful boards like this one), so I'd highly recommend only installing the core CD/DVD burning program and leaving all the other stuff behind.

I've been using NeroVision Express for several months and have created many DVDs. Usage is fairly straight forward, help files are minimal, trial and error is required. After downloading the most recent version (3.0.1.14) which fixed the problem of not being able to burn more than about 83 minutes per DVD, I can no longer burn to a DVD+R disk - no problem burning to a DVD+RW disk. I'm hoping that my contact with Nero techsupport will provide a solution.

This might be a good tool to 'burn' DVD's. It is lousy at editing mpg files. I am capturing TV movies with ATI. My output is dvd-mpg. I've run into a consistent problem: After editing the file, by removing commercials, I get sound out of synch with the video. If I edit the same file with Ulead, it works great !!

Just tested it with LOTR-ROTK(my standard test movie for comparing DVD backup programs) and I'm very impressed. For movies requiring very little compression I normally use Shrink and for high compression DVD-Rebuilder. Less macroblocking than Shrink and in half the time. Far better result than DVD2One,CloneDVD2,DVD X,and IC8 at least on this movie. Testing a multi-angle movie now to see how it handles that. By the way I tested with main movie only and viewed it on a 32inch TV.

I have been using the Nero Program suite for several years now.

It provides a lot of functionality for a very reasonable price.

I have now produced 3 DVD's with menus, transitions, splices, fades, music etc etc.

I have found it nice and easy to use, and able to produce reliable results. I edit/create my DVD during the day. Set Nerovison going overnight, and in the morning I have a nice DVD!

I reckon 9/10.

Needs a few more video/audio filters.

De-Speckle for low light video.
Normalise for audio.

I like Nero Vision Express, but I was disappointed that it still does not fix my capture problem, which I have reported to Nero techs. I was simply told to uninstall and re install Nero -it didnt happen. Then I find while searching the site that my Leadtek Winfast TV 2000 Deluxe card is not supported. For me it was pretty much a waste of money.

Always works great, never had any sync problems. Re-encoding can take 1.5 - 3 hours (depending on the source) for a full DVD, the only negative thing I can think of.

I've re-encoded SVCD MPEG's to DVD-MPEG2 with TMPGEnc first, then NeroVision Express 2 did not have to re-encode first. The end result of quality and the "overall time" was about the same though. I get slightly better quality re-encoding with TMPGEnc first and the size of the DVD files are smaller.

Overall it's a basic, solid and simple to use DVD Authoring program. The entire Nero 6 Ultra Edition Package is great.

I'd like to add/clarify on the last person's comments. I am thoroughly impressed with this software. I've had some time to play with it and learn a few things. Firstly, it does have the ability to create sub-menus. I did it after I created the chapters in my avi's which is also another cool feature. You can add any song for the menus you want, it has hundreds of backgrounds (with which you can also choose your own from personal pics) and many buttons. While it does re-transcode everything, that doesn't bother me. It also was able to convert from PAL to NTSC with ease and it also has automatic dual layer compatability. I'm not a pro DVD author so I don't need super complex dvd authoring software, hence this program which is outstanding.

I use NeroVision Express for most of my casual DVD authoring, because it really is relatively quick and easy, and reasonably functional. I've tried some of the other packages, but they are either not significantly better, or just too expensive to buy for casual use.

The Good:
- Accepts any AVI or MPEG files, transcodes and burns in one easy step
- Reasonable user interface, once you get used to it
- Quick menu creation from a library of templates with a little customization
- Simple timeline-style video editor built in to do clipping and appending, or offset audio/video tracks
- Can produce NTSC or PAL video, AC3 or LPCM audio
- Can save output to hd folder or image file as well as burning

The Bad:
- Transcoding performance acceptable, but not great (takes a couple of hours for a full DVD on my 2.5 GHz system)
- Always transcodes, even if the file is already MPEG-2
- Menu creation is a bit too simple and inflexible, e.g., can't make sub-menus
- Minor compatibility problems: some software can't read the resulting DVDs (DVD Shrink for one, ATI's DVD player for another), occasional audio sync problems with XVid AVIs (corrected in the video editor timeline)

Never burned a coaster with Nero yet. It can burn DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW in data modes as well as DVD VIDEO_TS folders with no problems. It can even burn and create image files. Every other burning program has given me calibration errors along with coasters. Nero is a godsend! The only thing I wish Ahead would do is create better install options to exclude the extra tools like wave editors and backup tools which is forced upon when installing Nero.

I got nero 5.5.10.56 installed in one PC and nero 6.3.1.15 installed in the other.

I use this application mostly for burning activities and I do not think the upgrade was necessary. For Video DVD I prefer to use TMPGEnc DVD author writing tool. For DVD+RW media just install InCD 4 and this will still work on top of Nero 5.5. For data Nero 5.5 is just fine.

I would think that the only real reason for upgrading would be the support of double layer burners.

Nero Recode 2 encountered an error and cannot continue ...

Searching the web with Google gives about 10 hits with this
error message. According other reports, DVD Shrink uses the
same error message. The error message continues with:

"Encoding error - illegal program state occurred" or
"failed to open file"

I was annoyed by these messages when trying to edit my DVD+RW
made by a LiteOn LVW 5001. All kinds of theories were
given by authors on the web. None report success with the same hardware but different software.

I decided to try Ulead DVD Moviefactory 3 instead of Nero Recode 2 with the same hardware. The result was that Ulead's software had no problem reading my vob's etc.

Conclusion: In my case this is clearly a software related problem. The software engineers of Nero Recode 2 (and problably DVD Shrink) ought to perform better in this case.

After installing this latest update xxx.15 I noticed my backups quit loading as UDF readable DVDs on my PC. I de-installed back to xxx.10 and they same DVDshrink vobs burn and then mount correctly as they always have.

Well Nero Vision Express 2 is really easy to use and creates good quality. But I have problems with the newest version 2.1.2.12. DVDs created with this version don't play on my stan alone. Acctually the titels only plays for about 2/10 second. DVDs created with an older version (I think its 2.1.0.8 or so) from february work fine on any dvd. Any ideas where the problem might be?

Do yourself a favor and stick to version 5.5.10.x if you want smooth and proper DVD-Video burning.

All I ever got myself (and heard from others) with version 6.x was headaches and coasters.

FINALLY, Nero is ONLY a tool for burning. If you try to use any of the other features (capture, author, shrink, encode, etc) then you'll very likely be highly disappointed. Ahead is a burning technology company. All these other non-burning features work pretty inferior compared to REAL tools designed at doing those functions. You've been warned.

It's really easy to use, accepts any kind of file that you put. The only thing about a complain is that in certain files the program creates by itself a chapter cutting in parts your file, destroing it, but that happen with CERTAIN files.

This works great for me. I just select an avi, pick the right bitrate and ac-3 audio and it works. Very easy. Never had problems with A/V sync, or aspect ratios. It auto detects the correct format pretty well.

You aren't sposed to import complient mpeg or vobs with this program. It's a full encoder/authoring app in 1 step. For that you need something else, nero express can do it, but is not great. Really if you made your mpg2 with TMPG, use TMPG dvd author to author it. Vision express works good with AVI's.

For me, nero vision express 2 i quite fast. Much faster then TMPG. I made 10 dvd's. They took 4-6 hours, and some were up to 4 hours long themselves, so it encoded in near realtime. Tried TMPG and it took 12 hours to do a 3 hours video. Way too long. To top it off the audio sync was totaly broken. TMPG isn't bad, but you have to handle the audio seperately and it takes many many steps to produce a DVD.

Nerovision express is pretty simple, run thru its wizard, go to sleep, and you wake up with a DVD burned and ready for you.

DVDShrink failed for me, errors at the end of the disk.
Did the same thing with recode and it worked perfect.

I upgraded my old version of Nero Recode (2.0.0.17) for making comparision. I have DVD Shrink v. 3.1.7.6 too. Anyway DVD Shrink is the easiest way for backing up your DVDs because it is ease of use and functionality. I tested with and old DVD that it has several "lines" and Recode could not finish the back up, instead of Shrink, who it could finish it without a problem and in a good way.

This is the first entry level package that correctly handles 16:9 aspect ratio AVI's (taken by my JVC Camcorder). It allows you to mix 16:9 and 4:3 material in different clips and burn burn a mixed aspect ratio DVD (or MiniDVD) that plays correctly. Well Done! Also a + was Tech Support who I reported the problem handling 16:9 AVI's in the last verions and they got it fixed!

I had version 5.5 for two years, never had a problem with it. It took me 5 minutes to get used to the upgrade, and it's worked great. I have not burned one coaster yet. I don't use all the programs that come with it, but the one's I do use are quite good. Very pleased.

I have recently used on win98+xp: Nero(since early v5), RecordMax,CopytoCD/dvd,NTI and the dreadful cd(coaster)creator.
Nero is the easiest to use and compile a disk. I've had all these "on board" but always went back to Nero, despite some crashes etc.
The MAIN trouble with Nero, was it conflicted with a file left by CDcoaster in the win/sys/iosubsys folder. Nero sent me a "cleaner" prog that del'd it.
My only moan about Nero, is that the dwld (26mb)has too many junk programs included that I don't want or need. RecordMax is only 7mb

Nero 6.3 & all versions is very good when working ok but what is missing now ?.
I can burn all + only media DVD`s with the Sony DRX 500UL using Nero recode but have to use Pinnacle instant CD/DVD to burn all the - DVD media Pinnacle will also burn the + DVD disc`s.
The media i have been using + is Infiniti,Sony. The - is Infiniti, Pakerd Bell, Discritc X2 & x4 Disc`s.

The latest upgrade to 6.300 is really bad.

Appearantly the last set of updates will not let the Sony (what I have) drives burn + media (R or R/W). You could still write -R media with no problems.

My solution was to uninstall Nero, then re-install from the original CD without doing any updates.

I am now running the original version from CD (6.011) and everything is working again.

I can burn + Media at 2.4X and 4X.

Work fine and fast, very good results. I had problems with the disc from DVDR75 (philips) too in previous versions (can't remember exactly, which was the last with the error), but the actual version (and the one before) is working propperly, without problems. Of course, it was an error in the programm, not a problem of copy protection - the DVD+R/RW disc are always without copy protection!
The Nero Digital format is very good - very good quality of output, one subtitle track in stream (playable on Nero Show Time), excelent sound quality. But, isn't exist a free player, that could be play Nero Digital viedos with all features like Nero Show Time.. then, I think, the format (so good as it is) had no chance to be a often used format...

Work fine and fast, and it is stable. The output quality is good. Very easy to make motion backgrounds menus and animated buttons. Not extra good: Unpossible to switch off chapter numbering and unpossible to make only one menu screen, even if you have more titles on disc.
For all: The programm is running slow? Try to keep your systems free of all trash, millions of dll they come with every shit downloaded from elsewhere... try to clear hundreds of all exotic codecs, which you don't need... and maybe you will be surprised, how fast can be your comp... :-)

I have had no problem with the previous versions of nero.. however since this update. It is asking for me to purchase a dvd video plugin to use recode. Looks like NERO is loosing me as a customer. DON'T BUY THIS BUGGY SOFTWARE!!!!!!
I downloaded an earlier demo and it work great. I upgraded and PAID REAL MONEY for lousy tech support and VERY, VERY, SLOW performance. Nero insists on recoding already compliant MPG video. The demo transcoded and burned in less than two hours, the NEW???? version takes 12hour for a 3.9gig asset.
Tech support won't answer questions. Using the feedback form doesn't help.
I need legal help!!!!!

I used to be a big fan of Nero, but version "6" onwards has turned out to be crap, try running Stomp's "RecordNow Max" instead, NEVER had a coaster with this proggy.....'nuff said.

I had to reboot my system(just to clean house)When I went to put nero back on it would not work properly so I emailed them for help this takes 2-3 days for a response & when you get your response you hope you have the right answer but for me I have been writing back in forth for a few weeks (this sucks) If you were to call for help its a $1.29 a minute (this sucks)before I needed there help I thought it was great but now its a pain in the a$^*%

Hey, I think the program is very good because of its ease of use and with the newest version, stabillity too.
The only thing I miss with it is subtitels-funktionallity. I have a lot of films in divx/xvid I would like to make some DVD's of. But I got subtitels for them too and would like them to come with on the DVD. Anyone know a easy way to get them with on DVD's with use of Nero Vision Express, maybe with help from a other program?

Think they are in kahoots with Hollywood. Wont allow you to split up movies into two disks. Also I cant over burn. I tried mode two and it reads 737 mb when I put in a 650mb file. And when I put in a 701mb file it says too large. Works good with storage of your clips and pics. Also good for file conversions. At least you can put DRM protected files on disk. They need to allow disks to burn faster rates. Many disks only burn 16x when they say 48x.

I like this tool, however for some reason movies I've made with it have some difficulty playing in some of my stand alone DVD players, where DVDxCopy platium and DVD2one don't. Does anyone else have this problem or know a remidy?

I have tried using NeroVision Express to create a Karaoke DVD compilation with a simple menu and everything looks fine except that the Burning process to hard-disk was very very long (almost 5 hours) and somehow NVE only imports one of the two audio tracks on the input VOB files. Therefore the resulting DVD is useless for me. I also had several occasions where NVE just kicks me out and vanishes.

This is a great program. I have made many backups and have no complaints about the quality or features. All my backups turn out great.

By the way to the person below. I think Recode allowed you to select the default language before Shrink did. All you have to do is go to Profiles on the DVD Backup screen and select the Audio tab and then select the language you want.

Nero Burning ROM must be the de facto CD/DVD burner, and with very good reason. When I upgraded to v6 I thought it was time to put my old 8mm home movies onto DVD, and Vision Express appeared to be the ideal no-cost option to do this. However, the editor part of NVE is a complete POS. It won't control my DV camera, playback of DV in the editor window runs at about ONE frame per second on my P3 1.2GHz laptop (well above the minimum spec) and only just plays OK on my P4 2.5GHz desktop, it takes 40 minutes to render a 6 minute sequence with just a few edits and mixes in it (WinDVD creator that came free with my very cheap firewire/usb2 pci card renders the same material in REAL time - i.e 6 minutes), and to cap it all, the one edited sequence I've managed to create with this POS was mangled completely when rendered, the edits used material from completely the wrong places in the source material.

As if this wasn't bad enough, I've tried using Ahead's tech support. This certainly reflects even more badly on Ahead than the useless software itself does. All I get from them is moronic responses to one or two questions and pointedly no response at all other questions. For instance, apparently my capture card is not supported. Huh! My 'capture card' is a firewire card, and a firewire card is one of the stated system requirements.

If anyone wants to see the full, sorry, 'dialogue' with this so-called tech support, I'll gladly post the whole lot here. Just ask, PLEASE ;-)

This is by far the best program to do anything with dvd's. But before you use this program, I strongly recommend running AnyDVD in the backgroud first. AnyDVD is a utility that runs on your system tray. It removes all the copy protection from a dvd. So when You have Anydvd running, you can copy any dvd with Nero Recode. I Think its the best. If you want to do it the free way, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. They also work great.

NeroVision Express is admittedly quirky. It works fine on my Athlon XP 2200 based machine but up until the latest patch refused to work on my Pentium 4 3.066Ghz machine. Quite why that is is unclear. Anyway...

In operation NeroVision is fairly easy to use. Basic operation is straight forward enough to allow a beginner to get up and running quickly. More experienced users with appreciate it's ability to transcode (export) several different file types and the transcoded output quality is very good. Transcoding speed is not fast by any stretch of the imagination even on my P4 3Ghz, but this can vary and speed improves if you aren't trancoding to and from very different file types . It would be nice to see the ability to queue transcoding jobs in a future revision.

To sum up, a useful tool to have on your PC (providing you can get it to work)

Nero Recode produces great quality backups with very little hassle. I used to use CloneCD but Nero Recode is so much more reliable. Making backups is easy and no longer a chore. If you need to make backups you NEED to get this.

1. DVDDecrypter - a free tool to copy movies from DVD to your harddrive. (also removes the copy protection)

2. Nero Recode - for best results choose only the movie and sound track. (remember to check www.ahead.de for the latest patch)

3. Decent quality blank DVDs - a step which far too many skip when first making backups. Follow the three simple rules when buying blanks: 1) The darker purple the dye the better the burn 2) Cheap blanks ain't good and good blanks ain't (usually) cheap 3) When in doubt, buy Ritek G04.

4. Nero Burning ROM 6 - the program you buy to get Nero Recode. Use it to burn the backups you've created using Recode.

5. Never burn a coaster again - unless you want to ;)

I found the UI a bit confusing and amaturish. Often hitting "next" actually takes you back to prior screens. Works OK once you get the hang of it and understand the program flow...but...menu creation seems to be an all or nothing afair. If you choose to have a menu, I couldn't figure out how to have a title only menu instead of title plus sub menus with chapter thumbnails that it insisted on. The point was moot once I found out (drum roll) that audio is rendered BADLY out of sync when creating an AC3 encoded DVD. It seemed OK if you want to stick with PCM.

Parts of the program are obviously outsourced or at least facsimilies of other programs. Editing very much resembles Arcsoft Showbiz, the DVD player apears to be PowerDVD with Nero's name on a new skin.

This software is very much a work in progress at this point in time and is disapointing in comparison to Nero's work in other areas. I gave it 5's across the board 'cause it seems like it's half the program it aspires be.

This tool is very simple to make backup copies of your movies: 1. rip a DVD to a folder on HD with DVDdecrypter, 2. run Nero Recode and open a folder with DVD files, 3. analysis will take 2 minutes, 4. select burner to burn DVD
Important: RECODE is not part of OEM Suite! You need to have full Nero license ($50 upgrade from OEM) to use this functionality.

I have been using dvd x copy platinum, but it would only work some of the time, where recode along with any dvd works every time. I have found that a couple of times the film has been a bit blocky it would be better if you could slow down the burn speed

Kwinn- I know what you mean. You can't name the .iso or .nrg file beofre the advanced analysis. What I do do get around that is to save to the HD folder then make an ISO image of the folder structure. It works well that way.

The problem i was describing is that... you have to wait for the advanced analysys to be done before it asks you for a name for the image file to be created.. that means one have to check back to see if advanced analysys is done so that they can provide a name the image is to be saved as. Where as it could be a one step process if they ask the name for the image before it does the advanced analysys so one dont have to check back every now and then to see if advanced analysys is done or not...

Nero recode is very good in terms of picture quality.. Making an image, However if you do choose advance analasys to get this quality you have to wait for it to do the advance analsys before you can provide a file name for it to make an image. For example with clone dvd you can simply choose what you need to copy and provide a name for the image and just go to bed and when you wake up an image is ready for you to burn.. however with nero recode one has to wait an hour for it to do the advanced analysys before you can supply a name so it can start making the actual image making process. Therefore making an image with recode a two step process...

I have downgraded back to 6.0.0.9 from 6.3. I had made some home videos with nice menus that I could use the DVD copy function in 6.0 and when I tried to copy the same disc using the same method in 6.3, I received a "can not copy this disc to DVD" error and it wouldn't record. Couldn't even make an image. Went back to 6.0.0.9 and everything was fine. Don't know if this is a bug or intended functionality.

The latest version (NeroVision Express v2.1.0.4) no longer insists on re-encoding already-valid VCD or SVCD input files :)

Have only tried making a Nero Digital file (from T2 Directors Cut). At 2.27 I had first compressed it using ReJig down to fit a DVD-R. Just for fun, I tried to do a Nero Digital from that. Recode decided to do a 2 pass encode (letting me in on that secret once the first pass was finished). Each pass in well under 1 hour (40-50 min).
At a file size to fit on one (1!) 80 min CD, the quality is just brilliant! I'm amazed - Ahead has really succeded in this part of their bloatware. I hate to admit it, but it outperforms both DivX and XviD by lightyears.

Gets better with every update! Having said that, it didn't work at all on certain functions correctly when it first came out due to bugs which seem to be corrected montly by current updates, so make sure you get the latest kit!

The only problem I've had is with the general MPEG encoder quality, although it seems to have got better of late. You have to reset their default video options to the maximum 9716kb/sec rate (for a DVD) to get decent quality. Other than that it's a darn simple product to use. Nowadays it's an heavily integrated package with Nero as a whole, you just have to make sure you use the right kit within the product. This one will always reencode MPEG's, but I don't think Nero express does that because you have to encode the files before that will work with them now for DVD's.

I just hope Nero don't start 'inventing' their own file types like microsoft!!

I spent a lot of time trying to creat a video on CD using NERO. I wish I had viewed this forum before hand. Still haven't been able to creat one but I have lots and lots of coasters. Now I wonder if it really works for anyone.

I have used both CloneDVD and Recode 2 and I have to say Recode 2 is definatly superior. The advanced analysis option and the ability to span a DVD-9 across 2 DVD-5 discs makes it superior alone. When used with AnyDVD it allows you to make perfect backups of your DVD collection. I own a 4x TDK burner and I only takes me an hour from start to finish to backup a DVD and burn it at 4x. Definatly worth the money to get the Nero 6 Ultra package.

i found this to work perfectly - i used to use TMPGenc & TMPG author - but encountered sticking on dvd players when the video was dark suck as a fade etc.
with this software i dont get it! tho encoding is slightly slower than tmpg (try it in 1 pass to speed it up) i found picture quality better generally & the ability to adjust the quality to fit more than 1 movie onto dvd handy.
authoring is simply & looks decent with animated menus/buttons & BGM. i installed the update (sorry cant remmber the no, was released about xmas 2003) & pretty happy (had less sync probs than i got with tmpg too)

I have been using dvd shrink & dvd2one to make backups of dvd's. However, dvd shrink is good for removing unwanted material and is very flexible but quality of backup is not very good. dvd2one has a better quality end result but is very inflexible. Nero recode 2 has solved this problem for me, it is flexible allowing me to remove unwanted material and the quality of the backups are a lot better then dvd shrink & dvd2one.
I have used other programs as well including dvd x copy express but this program beats every other program for flexibility and quality.

ive been using nero recode for ages now. at last version 2103
is an udgrade where you can see what new feautures have been added. I personally think nero recodes picture quality is Sharper than Instantcopy8's. (and recode is a LOT faster!)
Everybody has a personal preference of what transcoder they
use and i for one use Nero Recode 80% of the time. (i will
still use others eg.instantcopy for other dvds.
The trick is, have a few different programs to use and try the
one that works the best for That particular movie. :)

In no form better than IC. Did Last Crusade and the pic was very low quality. If u want this proggy just 4 the recode function, u'll b very dissatisfied. I feel that Nero pirated dvd shrnk features or just added the transcoder to they proggy. It's o way in compatability 2 Ic or Clone dvd.

Very well done. Also very easy to use. No help needed en results are really good too.

The program is made by the author of dvd shrink, but nero recode 2 has much more options and better results. First time i put money down for the whole nero package.

Nero recode is a part of the whole Nero 6 package which is 50$ at this moment. It also contains many other applications.

do not buy this shit! it does not work after so many hours of transcoding, if it transcodes mostly out of sync even if you have a perfect mpeg2 files. Just download the trial and see what I mean, crack is everywhere, but do not bother it is completely useless, try tmpgenc dvd author instead, faster.

After a couple of weeks of total frustration, Nero worked flawlessly. Started using the Easy CD Creator that came with new burner. No luck at all. Then tried the freeware-shareware programs with limited success. Finally found out about the trial version of Nero and all my problems were solved. I did learn a lot about DVD's and burning which won't be lost. Trial version good until 12-31 but I may purchase before then. Excellant results.

I use the latest Beta which is bundle with the 10/1/2003 released of Nero 6 Ultra Ed demo package. Well, Nero Recode does not do what I want to do, and that is "removing unwanted material from a DVD" as advertised. The DVD I was testing is a Disney's DVD (i.e. Oliver & Company), and with most DVDs from Disney, they have a tons of extra materials which made the DVD a 7GB+ DVD, while the main movie is only 3.5GB.

The structure of this DVD is divided in 4 VTS, with the main movie in VTS_2, the extras in VTS_3, and previews in VTS_4. Under VTS_3, there are 10+ titles (like I said lots of xtras), and I want to disable some big extras which made up more than 600MB, but every time, I disable any title within this VTS_3, Nero Recode disable the whole VTS_3. According to the guide at Doom9, at one time Nero Recode works like advertised, but as of this Beta release, it does not do that. Let's say, you just want to disable the FBI screen, it might disable the whole VTS. A bug?!! I think so. And since it does not do what it's really intended for, and even though it's free, I can only give a 6 for an overall score.

I just got the October 1st 2.0.1.9 demo release of this program, and let me start out by saying that I only tried it once for a DVD I needed *quickly* authored. That said, i'm not sure if its that the errors listed in the comments on site have been fixed, my running win2k, or a combo of the two, but I have not had any of the crashing problems that anyone else has been speaking of.

Good - Clean interface, easy to use. I added preencoded mpeg2 video and had a classy looking menu system with bg pictures and sound down in 20 minutes tops. Everything was smooth, and the program has many features that other "ease of use" apps such as Ulead dvd moviefactory 2 didn't. Good stuff right up to the authoring..

Bad - at which time it hit me with a 10 hour Estimated Time to Completion as it "transcoded" (read: reencoded) the video that was already dvd standard 720x480 mpeg2. Now i'm not sure what exactly it felt it had to do to the video, but another program that simply takes the mpeg streams and joins them looked pretty sweet after that. I gave the video a once over, and quality looked pretty much the same, though there was an annoying 1 pixel wide bar of crap at the right side for no apperant reason... that is not cool in my books. I can't begin to imagine why that happened. I later tried it with another program that simply merged the streams and found no such problem.

Conclusion - If you want ease of use, there are easier; if you want speed, this is NOT the one to go to, as it reencodes the video regardless of format. This program looses the only function I personally would want it for - a speedy menu driven dvd or svcd - by that damned reencode. I would only recommend this to a beginner dvd author who doesn't mind a high wait for a more than functional dvd.

This program is nice for beginners, but it would cause such a hassle for many people including myself. For instance, the program crashes on me sometimes, so I have to save my project very often. One more thing that I hate about this program is that it will always transcode no matter what file it is. I have a true svcd standard file made from tmpeg, and nerovision still considers it to be transcoded. I hope next version of it will eliminate this problem.

NOT NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE

This program, on my system corrupts NTFS.sys driver and causes random craches in NeroVision and in windows in general. After trying this I have had to reinstall Windows from scratch!!

When transcoding it produced MFC runtime errors, crashes and BSODS. In fact it's ruined my windows installation!

I'm thinking of trying something else!

Nero 6 Ultra (v6.0.0.15) wont let me overburn. I tried a SVCD that was about 15 seconds too long, and it said my disc didnt have enough room, this was with overburn enabled, and set longer than it needed to be. So I installed Nero 5.5.10.50 (the newest for the 5.5) and it burned it (the same SVCD with the same CDR and the same overburn settings). Nero 5.5.10.50 is available on the www.ahead.de website. Its only in the 5.5 update section, but it is the full program.

Don't feed Nero Vision any AVI (DivX/XVid) files. Encode them with TMPGEnc or whatever to MPG files, then load them. It works perfectly fine on my PC.

Great tool. I have never had a problem burning anything. I use it both for CD and DVD media. I have tried other tools (EasyCD, Blind Write, Alcohol, etc.) and I think Nero is the best.

Nero 6 with Nero Vision Express.This is a great tool, almost perfect, that works cool. I have only made VCDs but it works very good (with chapters and animated menus and thumnails). I always use mpgs encoded with Tmpgenc and I am very pleased with the results. =D
Highly recomended.

I used NeroVision 2022 with Nero 551042. I dont have Nero 6 installed.

I converted 15 wmv videos with EasyX Video Converter to Mpg2 videos.

And NeroVision 2022 made a DVD with animated menu and animated thumbnails. DVD plays for 2 hr 15 min. Nothing went wrong.

A nice idea. Would be great value for money...only if it worked.

Many attempts creating SVCDs and DVDs with many different AVI files and slideshows all failed with transcoding error.

Nero blames them on my AVIs. However I can create great DVDs with DVD Lab, TMPGenc and SlideShow MovieMaker.

Nero Burning Rom 6 is a definite improvement over the 5.5 ver - interface-wise, however my complaint is with Nero Vision Express 2. I tested NVE2 to make a vcd using some clips from various Japanese Animation fansubs I have lying around on my comp and on cd, and the quality was pretty bad after burning. The subtitles were already too small to begin with for a 13inch tv from about 10 feet away... but I normally can still make them out, not so with the disc I made with NVE2 - The subs were a unintelligible mess... however, there was one neat thing that I likes about NVE2, and that was the adding of fade-ins/outs It made the clips look a bit more proffessional instead of just suddenly cutting to the clip from the menu, also after each clip played it went right back to the menu - just like a dvd (pretty cool). Also the menu setup is pretty customizeable (better than Roxio's DVD Builder - which doesnt allow the custom menus, only the use of its templates) and includes the ability to make motion menu-buttons (Roxio has motion menu Backgrounds but only with its supplied templates) - which is still pretty cool. Unfortunately, the vcd menu appears to be limited to 13 entries (I had 17) that work, the dvd player will just stop when 14 - 17 are accessed from the menu. I don't know if this was a problem from the older versions or not, but it is a problem now, very annoying. Also, There is no help system for this program, nor is one availiable for download so finding out how to use nve2's features is trial & error...

I hope that updates to Nero Vision Express 2 specifically are released in the near future because this part of the nero 6 package is excellent otherwise...

I am using the nerovision express version 1.0.4.6 and it works like a charm. I love it. No crashes and easy to use. It sounds as though it's only the newer version 2.2 that crashes. I would go back and get the version I have. I also love the dvd mpeg2 plug-in as well as the one for svcd.

Tried the trial version of Nero 6 with Nerovision Express 2, had the same experience as one or two others. 4 times in a row, with diffrent avi files, the program took 4 hours to try to transcode the file and failed. I suspect a possible memory leak, program was taking 128 meg ram in Task Manager, but high (98% +) cpu utilization is a problem also. This was with P4 2 gig processor, 256 meg ram and plenty of disk space.
On the other hand, Tmpgenc plus and Tmpgenc Dvd author works right the first time and cpu util is about 20 % at normal priority, 15 meg memory used.

The perfect burning application. Does everything I want, including VCD, data CD, music CD, complaint DVD-Video, DVD data, and CD-to-CD on-the-fly copies and DVD-to-DVD on-the-fly copies. This is for 5.5.10.20.

Older versions had some bugs with DVD compliancy.

I'll make no comment on the new version 6.0.0.9 "new functions", but I'll give it more time before I complain. The burning app is still good. It's just the new feature that need some attention, like NeroVision Express2 and ReCode.

For burning, Nero 5.5.x is the quintessential application. It's the Photoshop of media burning.

not bad for a first try but its a little clunky to work with unlike dvdshrink.

also works ok ripping direct from disc if a little slow.

not bad for saying its bundled free with nero 6 and not much fanfare to publicise it either.

quality of main movie is pretty good but extras were very blocky.

will keep my eye on its progress.....for now dvdshrink is better alternative.

I really wanted to use this thing. I hope it's fixed in the future. But right now? BARF! Crash, crash, crash. If it functions for once, capture quality is crap, crap, crap. It drops frames and DOES NOT REPORT IT! Come'on ahead! You can do better than this. I've seen beta releases better than this so-called final release.

I agree this program keeps crashing on me also. I have a AIW 7500 and I cannot hear any audio in NeroVision. All of my other capturing programs work on the same system.
Also after I installed NeroVision my ATI MMC 8.5 TV app kept crashing, I uninstalled NeroVision and the crashes continued. I reinstalled NeroVision and the MMC crashes went away. I thought it was from DirectX 9b but it turns out Nerovision is the culprit. This program needs a patch real bad.

The Good - Has lots of features. Customizable menu layouts, backgrounds, music, buttons, headers and footers. Chapter button images can be selected from any part of the chapter. (nice touch!)

The Bad - Authoring steps are a bit obtuse, especially on VCDs. No provision for producing an image of the desired output VCD on the hard drive, so if anything bad happens you have to start over again. Menu and structure options are saved, but chances are NeroVision Express 2 will crash if you try to use them again. Even after rebooting, the d*mned program will always retranscode the source video files, even if they were orginally produced by its movie creation section. This bites.

The Ugly - Too bad I can't burn a DVD or VCD without tossing errors and wasting my time. Hours and hours lost to crashes during the transcoding steps (DVD and VCD), only to have to repeat the entire process from scratch. Error messages are vague and don't give a clue to the cause, also the log entries don't point to anything. The only way I've been able to burn a usable DVD is to write the image to hard drive then use Nero to burn a UDF DVD Video to my DVD+R media. I've neven gotten a working VCD since the program hard crashes.

If later versions eliminate the crashes, I'd give them an overall score of 8, but not on this latest version.

Decent tool. Personally I think no other tool comes any where close to this product.
Adaptec , now Roxio used the the leader, but the newer version are too buggy.. now making this this leader
