I had a few NTSC DVD's which I decided to archive using H264 crf14 and the quality loss was still massive, especially small video details. Using progressive DVD's, crf15 is virtually identical to the source, but NTSC always poses problems in my experience-you have to ivtc or decomb/deinterlace depending on its pattern and you take quality hits.

Anyway using MakeMKV I get the dvd without its annoying mastering errors(mine had a few such as a microsecond flash at start of the mastering house and its work board gui)and no further quality loss. MakeMKV removed this crap easily. I used XP 32bit as I had loads of storage on my laptop harddrive still(my Win10 pc was used up with junk!)and ripped straight from the dvd to my hard drive. Process for the 2 hour film was done in 12 flawless mins. I've been a registered user for years. Excellent tool!

This version also crashed for me when opening it. Last version worked fine. Legacy users willfind it doesn't work in XP 32 bit too-some older versions did 1.17.2 but with more limited options. Tried it on Win 7 64 bit laptop and it crashes. I've reverted back to last version.

The fale positive virus alert is the cdart install which in some way triggers of a warning about trojans. I would not bother trying to install on any 32 bit XP as that is well deprecated despite saying future versions of MakeMKV will drop XP support and it appears to have dropped it now, so just use any earlier version or Upgrade your system!

1.17.3 is messed up. There was a review here the other day about the same issues I've been seeing but now mysteriously vanished. Why as this is useful for others and valid?

Anyway two well known antivirus programs show up 1.17.3 as having a Trojan in its installer and to test what the previous now 'vanished' reviewer said about XP- he's right missing dll files warning messages show up during the install process which fails ultimately. Please pass on these observations to MKV forum as I'm not a member of it. Thank you Videohelp. Previousvsrsion is fine 1.17.2 and is 10/10!

First I was disappointed that there is no new key anymore (because I wanted to make German versions of "The Last Starfighter" and "Creature" - unfortunately my best friend doesn't understand English). Then I saw that you can buy a key now. Luckily I didn't hesitate long, bought it and now I have a lifetime key for MakeMKV :) And I'm very happy to be able to support this great software like this!

Let's be nice. Probably user entered a defunct key or was mistyped. Had a similar situation myself until I entered updated trial key a while back. Functions are still limited and problematic in XP 32 bit by the way, but don't have XP 64 bit to test. Also a few problems in Win7 of not reading discs, but minor issues. Nice tool for backup though.

To Daniel:
You should read the program description before posting such b**t. Type in the beta key, which is available for free even on this website, and you will have full functionality. Key changes about every other month, but you can always get a new key here for free.

After extensive testing, I bought the program. So I don't have to hassle with beta keys anymore.

Seems to be quite good. DVD MPEG-2 is already compressed enough as it is, so I'm not keen on transcoding it and dealing with the resulting generation loss. This app remuxes your selected AV streams into .mkv file without touching the AV quality, so you get exactly the same quality as you would if watching the disc. Exactly what I wanted and very easy to use. Prior to this I was trying to use XMediaRecode which can do the same thing in theory, but in practice I found it extremely buggy (crashes often, some streams can't be decoded) and remuxing is very slow for some reason (around 20MB/sec vs 300MB/sec). It remains to be seen whether the app can deal with all my discs though.

It works okay in XP 64 bit; the problem is now clear of limited function in 32 bit XP. I confirmed this myself yesterday in extensive testing. Very few would be using XP 64 bit even back in Legacy days and most back then would have had 32 bit versions.

XP is unfortunately too old now. Win 11 is here, but I prefer Win7 best of all where MakeMKV gets 10/10 in every respect. Review is for XP 32 bit.

I have just installed 1.17.1 Beta (July 13, 2022) on Windows XP. It installed without any problem and works 100%. However, I am running XP 64-bit. Maybe it's the 32-bit XP for those that have problems.

I have been using MakeMKV for many years for ripping my DVD collection which has poor sound, and then use sound editors to EQ and MKVToolNix to multiplex back into the MKV file. I just used it to remove subtitles from a DVD that my player could not disable or switch off.

It is a fantastic program and it has help me out a lot and I give it 10 out of 10.

MakeMKV works for me in every platform other than XP. I have the problems already mentioned before-options greyed out, can't navigate its GUI as no options to see, notification box during an encode(it transcodes only from DVD ROM!) full of gobblygook writing etc. Maybe a specific dll library is missing in my system which is needed to allow MakeMKV function? By the way I'm fully registered!

Not worried though as I use Win10 as well for encoding.

I am surprised that many people here think that that only DVD copies work under Windows XP.

The error could be, for example, that the (Beta) Key was not entered correctly, the internet connection is not activated
in the settings or maybe no Service Pack 3 installed.

With me MakeMKV runs under Windows XP without errors and just as well, as under current operating systems.

MakeMKV 1.15.4 and 1.16.0 were the only ones that did not work with Windows XP so far.

@tuskacz: You are describing a bug that was already addressed 12 years ago in the MakeMKV forum and does not exist anymore.

MKValidator never showed me faulty MKV files under any circumstances.
MakeMKV cannot be compared with Handbrake. There are too much differences.

MakeMKV is currently the only application that you can use with a free beta key without any restrictions.

Used correctly, MakeMKV does exactly what it is supposed to do.

There used to be a load of reviews here stating that its options etc don't work with XP, now all reviewers deleted? XP is Legacy I know, but software maker should not state on his Homepage that it does from XP upwards when it clearly does not after trying it today, as options are greyed out and only working from dvd rom is allowed!!! I use win7 by the way and that is okay usually to work with, as one can use hard drive dvd folders unlike XP.

I do NOT recommend MakeMKV.
It tends to create damaged MKVs from DVDs for whatever reason.
When I validate created MKVs with mkvalidator tool , it often throws tons of errors, forcing you to create MKV again.
For some disks or DVDs already ripped to HDD, you will never be able to create error-free MKVs.
Use mkvtoolnix instead.

Fantastic software. A tip before using it on those slightly grainy or dirty DVD's is to use DVD Rebuilder free or pro and input an avisyth script which will work in both progressive of interlaced e.g

UnDot().FluxSmoothT(temporal_threshold=7, luma=true, chroma=true)

Export at 100% no compression. Voila cleaned up a little. Then run MakeMKV on your hard drive dvd folder(but doesn't work in XP! for some reason?) or disc if you've burned it. You can of course compress using the equally fabulous DVD Rebuilder e.g dual layered DVD's, strip the menus, audio choices etc and get it to 4.35b approx size, the use MakeMKV on it again. UnDot is mild and equivalent to RemoveGrain(mode1) and FluxSmoothT is non destructive at default.

Don't get me wrong I think this software is worthy, but how do you get it to work in XP when it purports to be-this is bs? I'm using Win10, but do prefer the legacy system for encoding. I have not used makemkv for some time, but I do recommend using the program (I am aware of its existence and have used it in a variety of ways since the years of 2015), because it is simple in its proposal, which is to transform the entire structure of a bd or dvd (video audio tracks and subtitles), in a single mkv file, and for those who do not have a desktop player to watch their physical media, but have a media player, this program, it is more than mandatory, to facilitate the whole process; A nice point to highlight would be the possibility of testing the program for a generous period, let's say, with a free key (since the price of the program itself may be of little accessibility but I understand why the value, in view, of its functionality and proposal), this allows the user to have an honest judgment of the program, before buying, if any kind of "surprises"; Anyway, in my opinion, it's an excellent program that got it right, in simplifying a process, at first simple, that can be done with other programs, but it would demand a lot of work and time. Congratulations to the developers, and I hope there will be more evolutions of this program.

Used AnyDVD to decrypt an old concert DVD from 2003 that was copy protected. AnyDVD removed the copy protection, so you could see all the files in windows. Ran MakeMKV. MakeMKV correctly detected all the files. I started to copy the files to HD. It appeared to be working. Said it would take 25 mins for 6GB of files. After 15 mins, it showed it would now take 2+33 mins to copy the files. The length of time keep going up the longer it ran. It kept giving me some sort of invalid data error and said it was trying to work around. I finally closed the program after 30 mins. My pc is an I7, WIN 10 with 24GB of ram. Disappointed. Will try another program.

The answer to XP is it working? No it isn't! The GUI bug is still unfixed depending on your platform. That said you can transcoded a DVD using XP straight from your DVD ROM drive, but that's about it. Try doing it from a pre ripped folder on your hard drive. You won't be able to use MakeMKV GUI. Nothing to do with whether you have JavaScript installed or not, it just does not work in XP.

MakeMKV works in other platforms well which is okay but shouldn't advertizse in its info that it works in Legacy XP as it is crippled in this platform. I use Win8 and still use XP too as many do.

Right, tested on XP. It opens okay, but navigation problems using GUI in XP, Win7/8 tested! Failure to locate pre ripped folders or files on computer. GUI not reading My Computer or its related folders/sub folders! Advanced options/manual DVD opening etc not working too.

I can't rate this version positively. There is indeed a navigation problem as mentioned. None of the functions to open a DVD manually or open an existing pre ripped dvd file/folder on PC hardrive is working. Only direct function from DVD rom is working. First off new version fixes bug in XP which forced program not to open. MakeMKV works pretty flawlessly in other systems of Windows, but in XP 'Houston we may have a newer bug?' 1.16.1 beta works for discs off the dvd rom drive, but opening an already ripped file folder MakeMKV fails to 'see' it in its gui.

Going to Open Files or Control + O then 'Look in' fails to show anything at all. My Computer on left of gui is just a faded out grey. This prgram in XP only appears to work on dvd's in the rom drive as half of its functionality has gone for some reason? 10/10 for other systems but in XP 5/10. New beta to fix this weird problem of navigation to already ripped decrypted dvd folders on computer? thanks.

I think the confusion lay in that for a brief time the older version was briefly still available on the MakeMkv website, yet the changelog here on Videohelp quickly(Baldrick moves fast with the latest versions-kudos to him!) showed 1.16.1 as the the newer version came out that the same day within hours or so of older version, depending on your time zone, muddling things a bit. I assumed still buggy, but the version must have 1.16. I uninstalled and deleted it so can't check version number.

I'm going to test it out on XP later- should work fine touch wood. Thanks.

My review is for XP as my interest was piqued and I wanted to test if it works or not in this system, otherwise regarding my Win10 the review would be 10/10 as previous version showed. I downloaded an installer off the MakeMKV web page and installed it, but a small red box appears(warning?) and program refuses to open. No good in XP! Why then does site say it is compatible with it? I've used it for years (on Win 7 x64), prior to purchasing a license. It has worked pretty reliably for me for the most part, with occasional issues on certain rigs. This is probably not in the class of a cut & dry, "one-size-fits-all", "set it and forget it" software; there can be some wrinkles, if you are not diligent about looking into them. Yes, your particular hardware could be a factor. The MakeMKV forum is a good place for exploring that, and possibly also here on VH. The issues are more likely associated with Blu-Ray. For full functionality, you should have recent Java installed, and appropriately pointed to for MakeMKV to find it. There will be some BR discs that give it problems. I recently learned why desired subs from BR were not being rendered (thanks to the aforementioned forum), and this will involve the nuisance extra step of using some additional software.

When critiquing this program, we need to get real: there ain't anything much left on the market that does what this program does. Most of the "alternatives" listed here are long defunct. (Can't comment on BDtoAVCHD *yet*, as I haven't tried to use it, so far.) The only 3 programs I'm aware of that can handle the protections of commercial discs are: the Red Fox takeover of AnyDVD, and reviews of that company and its business practices here are troubling, to say the least; Fab, which is pricey even with discounts, has a totally different operational approach, and about which company somewhat ditto to the situation with Red Fox; and MakeMKV, which has been offered at no charge to us for quite a few years. I'd go so far as to make the argument that MakeMKV is nearly indispensable, we should be very glad to have it, and we should support it.

Comments about crashing reflect on the particular users system. I've been using this program for years and never a crash or hiccup. It works every time for me. That's why I bought a license several years ago.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This is very finicky software. When I used during its XP compatible days back then it always used to crash and now in Win7 or Win10 it still does. I even resorted to a portable version and that was crap too. It has never worked for me sad to say.

I've been using MakeMKV and its great for doing backups - but as far Blu-Ray disks are concerned, its way to finicky. If you look at the forums you's see it often fails when trying to actually make MKV files with varying error messages. I had a bran new disk that plays and backs up fine, but I had to use BDtoAVCHD if I simply wanted to remux the video and audio, untouched, from the backup to an MKV file. I rated BDtoAVCHD a 10 because it gave me no problems.

I've used this without any problems or errors for a few years now. Transferred all my DVD's and BR discs to MKV. I purchased a license to both support the author and eliminate the hassle of having to update the key every few months also if the powers that be decided to close the program down. I suspect the very few people who have had errors should look to their own computer for problems. I've used this on numerous PC's. Simply works

Believe me, I'd like to rate this much more highly, because **when it is working** it is simply great at what it does. The problem is that I've found it to be much too unreliable on my computers. I keep getting "Fatal Error", and then the program closes. (Have to call that a crash, folks !) I'll uninstall MakeMKV, reinstall it (still with the current version), then it may work for a short while, _or it may not_. Either way, the same problem is sure to return. I processed 4 or 5 BR titles over the last couple weeks with no problem using MakeMKV, but this morning we are right back to "Fatal Error." This even happens with no disc loaded. It's VERY frustrating. There was no sign of this behavior a week ago. My system in question has not changed at all, over the intervening time. It won't be a hardware problem either, because DVD Fab keeps chugging right along, doing its thing as expected, on the very same BR discs. Unfortunately for me, I much prefer working with the MKV format output by MakeMKV, as opposed to the BR file structures output by Fab. (Perhaps there are some alternate output formats one could select for Fab, other than ISO ? I gained a more than adequate familiarity with the DVD file structures, but never really did that for BR.) Not entirely sure about this, but I think the MKV format also kills Cinavia stone cold dead . . . .

Are these "fatal errors" triggered by some latest new wrinkle in the copy protections that MakeMKV just cannot cope with ? Even so, that wouldn't explain the crashes with no disc loaded -- which definitely does NOT happen when the program is actually working. I've sought help on their forum, but still no explanation for all this, and no joy.

Anyway, I'd be happy to buy a license for MakeMKV, but I'd like this problem to receive a real and lasting fix. Otherwise, this program is a potential solution that I just can't count on.

This software is unbelievable. With programs like DVDFab charging hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for decrypting and copying your discs to harddrive at a 1:1 lossless conversion, MakeMKV is an absolute steal and is quite possibly one of the greatest programs ever created for the PC. It's not an exaggeration, MakeMKV is without a doubt the most critical tool any possible self-proclaimed cinephile could own. Add on top of that the fact that the developer is constantly giving away free beta keys to extend the freeware period by 60 days AND the fact that he and his community are active 24/7 on the forums makes MakeMKV to the DVD/BDR scene what Doom9 was to us almost 20 years ago.

MakeMKV is also an import and incredible tool because of its easy, completely intuitive interface. It's got a great minimalist aesthetic and everything is simple, concise and effortless to figure out and navigate. So easy, in fact, that an elementary school child could figure out how to rip a dvd/bluray to a harddrive if given the opportunity.

MakeMKV can't be praised enough. The 9.0 score from ~70 users is deserved, 100%. I'm amazed it doesn't have a perfect 10/10. After years of use, I plan to use it for as long as I have a bluray and dvd library to backup and update on my NAS. Bravo to the MakeMKV family and thank you for everything you've done for the scene. Much love and respect!!!

Makemkv was the best program they ever invented when it comes to creating an MKV video file from physical media, without changing its video, audio or subtitle structure. In the generation of Smart tv, it is a rather than exciting tool, because for me that has a large collection of dvd's and no longer uses the dvd player, I can simply create a file in mkv, and transfer it for my external hd, or flash drive (depending on the file size of course), it is possible to create the same process in other ways, but it is too complicated, and requires more tools, make mkv, automates and facilitates this process and safer anyway, Makemkv is an indispensable tool, and one that makes you easier to insert into the new way of watching video on television without discarding your physical media, rather than saving your content, in a single file, Congratulations to the developers!

Excellent software. I noticed in other reviews that the latest product key is issued for free by the developer on their official Forum (in a thread under the Announcements section).

It works perfectly for doing straight forward Blu-ray backups. I've just used it with 2 Blu-ray discs which aren't encrypted, and I'm now left with 2 .MKV files, fully chapter'd, without transcoding(!) and it plays perfectly in MPC-HC. I used an exclamation mark for the no-transcode design because it means I have a 1:1 flawless quality reproduction, and it drastically reduces conversion time too. Obviously the resulting file size is 'massive' as a result but who doesn't have terabytes of space these days for files coming in at 10-20GB a piece.

It's honestly amazing how such a light-weight, simple but effective piece of software is created for free (at least for now) by the developer who has surely invested over a hundred hours into this. My hat's off to him.

@Bob
MakeMKV is FREE* whilst in beta. And it's been in "beta" for years.
*Temporary keys are continuously provided by the developer on the forum when the current one expires.
As such, there is no need to purchase anything so technically MakeMKV is free.
If the program ever makes it out of "beta" (which is doubtful) the DVD capabilities will remain free of charge.

IsoBuster Serial Keyrks. Start up IsoBuster, Insert a circle, select the drive (if not chosen as of now) and let IsoBuster mount the media. IsoBuster instantly demonstrates to all of you the tracks and sessions situated on the media, joined with all document frameworks that are available.
Along these lines, you get simple to access, much the same as Windows Explorer, to every one of the records and envelopes per document framework. Rather than being restricted to one document framework that the OS picks for you, you approach "the entire picture". Access information from more established sessions, get to information that your OS (e.g. Windows) does not see or avoids you and so on.

This is STILL free after nearly 10 years. There is no trial version vs full version, just the beta version still. Someday the software will move from beta to production but most probably NOT. I've owned this software after using it for 5 years with only very few issues, one issue with closed captions and a few DVDS won't copy correctly(about 1-2% of them). I felt I wanted to support MakeMKV for their great work so I bought it.

This is a great DVD/Blueray ripper. It will rip your dvd or blueray but don't confuse it with re-encoding. Used with Handbrake (also free) for re-encoding and you have everything you need. For the few DVDs that I've had issues with closed captions using Handbrake with the libdvdcss have worked fine.

The current beta key which is suppose to be good through November DOES NOT WORK. In fact it's September's key. So a new key needs to be posted. To get the program to work you need an earlier version and need to set your system clock back a month or so.

Pretty ok software to rip bluray to mkv. It NOT freeware though as site says. It is shareware and the software says that when using it. It only gives 30 days of "free use".

Definitely would use it longer if it were freeware (donation option, vink vink) but 50 euros is way too expensive for me considering there are free alternatives like bdtoavchd or mkvtoolnix that are able to do the same.

It does work but why pay $70 when there are freeware tools (ClownBD, Blu2mkv) that will rip a blu-ray to MKV? It's menu option is primitive too compared with the freeware alternatives.

The thing you're paying for is the BD decryption, but if you have a subscription to AnyDVD HD or its equivalent in the DVD Fab market then that will will decrypt for you plus many other things too. MakeMKV just makes MKV's and thats that. It won't even compress for you.

Conclusion: too limited for the money. Avoid.

The easiest tool I have used so far. Drop the Blu-ray in the tray, select the right video track, audio track and subtitle and click on save.

The only draw back it has is that it does not compress the source video. Not sure if that is a draw back to some, but for me, I want to have quality and space. I cannot have 40 GB mkv files for every blu-ray title I buy. 5 to 10 GB is acceptable.

So once I have ripped the mkv, I use FreeMake Video converter to compress the file further. Since freeMake video converter does not run under Linux, I have Windows-7 running under VirtualBox and since I have my folders auto-mounted to VirtualBox, I can kickoff the conversion from my Windows without delay.

I tried using Handbrake to compress the mkv, but it does not even come close to what FreeMake Video Converter can do.

Is perfect for making non compressed MKVs from Bluray disc.

Great while its free. $70 to buy though, is just ludicrous.

The 1.6.10 version is great! I convert my dvd to mkv without loose audio or video quality and play in my Samsung BD player C5500 or my tv Samsung UD40C6900.
Unfortunately, the version 1.6.11 (or higher) generate MKV files that doesn't can be seek in my Samsung devices. So, I recommend the 1.6.10 version if you intent to play your MKV files also in stand alone player or tvs.

Notice that the direct and mirror links point to windows version of the application.
Either this needs to be indicated or additional links put in.

As for use, have tried it a couple of times and it works like a charm. No, it doesn't transcode, it simply transfers and then you can do with the file what you want.

I wouldn't pay for this at all! When converting not all the VOBs will synchronize properly with some movies. Most cases the first vob converting may sync the audio and video together but when the second + VOBs goto merge they will throw the sync off! I'm still using DVD FAB to convert MKVs which also has a sync problem with certain movies like "The X Files: I want to believe" is really out of sync when converting to MKV with both programs that I mentioned!

I really like this program alot. I have used several different programs HOWEVER I think MakeMKV is by far the best. It could be the DVDSHRINK of BluRay. It literally has the ability to rip just the MEAT of a Blu Ray right into a MKV container. FREAKIN BRILLIANT. MKV to MKV is by far easir to convert. I was using Slysoft to RIP my BR's. I now only use SLYSOFT running in the background if I come across a BR MAKEMKV cant handle. I also used to use RIPBOT which did work but was a pain in the butt to get rolling. I now have gone back to using HandBrake which I LOVE esp. for 720 mkv conversion. My only complaint??? the price.....for now the program is free via beta however down the line it looks like they will be asking $50, I know I will end up paying it. HOWEVER I think for $25 a pop they would get a lot more people willing to cash out sooner rather than later..GODSPEED MAKERS OF MAKEMKV and GOOD LUCK!!!

..I agree they should be compensated--I'm just stating that going to their web site the price was now $50 after the trial to keep the mkv function for bluray.Yes its trialware now.I just think its a bit excessive for a program that still has issues---and when there are other "free" proven and even "pay" alternatives that don't cost as much..And I do have a life..But I guess in your world no one is entitled to an opinion other than yours!..

"Now they want to charge $50"
Yes and programmers should not expect compensation for the many hours they put into their softwares. Everything should be handed out free on a silver platter to you.
Get a Life !!!!!

Used it this weekend to backup a few new BDs. I had been using DumpHD previously but recently have many disks for which AACSKEYS has not worked.
Ripped three movies to disk and then De-MUXd with tsmuxer and had to convert DTS to AC3 for playback on PS3 then re-mux to my starage server. Very useful tool. Just worked perfectly.

Great tool. this tool should be add in the blue-ray decrypting categorie since it can decrypt some blue-rays (but not BD+ ones). this is my solution for blue-ray re-encoding: I use MakeMKV to rip then handbrake for re-encoding. Very nice app, very simple.

Remember the vob to mpg tool? This works just like it--M2ts to MKV-No compression-Backing up blu ray I had to rip disc to drive-Open tsmuxer-remux to ts after stripping what I didn't want--Then load to megui where I was getting about 6FPS..This tool, I rip the main movie to the drive-(It separates the main movie from the extras) Create my AVS script with megui and go---My only dislike was I was unable to open remuxed m2ts files created with tsmuxer in blu-ray format folder. Other than that, this prog works, and definitely cuts out a few steps for me! 2 thumbs up!
