MPEG2 Works is now up to v3.0 and has changed from donationware to shareware. It's a $10 registration fee (and well worth every penny!).
MPEG2 Works is a GUI for many of the UNIX tools that one would otherwise have to futz with in the Terminal. Once you've ripped your DVD (or have your iMovie reference movie), MPEG2 Works takes over fom there and will make VCD-compatible mpeg1, SVCD-compatible mpeg2, multiplex, demultiplex, join, split, etc., etc.
The author answers his eMail, listens to suggestions, fixes bugs, and provides helpful advice in his 'blog forum. I highly recommend the program as it has managed to gather all of the appropriate tools -and- make them work!
The only other app you will need (if you want to make SVCD's from a DVD, for example) is OSeX for ripping the VOB's from your DVD.
