NEW VERSION 9.1.0

MKVtoolnix is a set of tools to create, alter, split, join and inspect Matroska files(mkv). With these tools one can get information about (mkvinfo) Matroska files, extract tracks/data from (mkvextract) Matroska files and create (mkvmerge) Matroska files from other media files. Matroska is a multimedia file format aiming to become THE new container format for the future. Use MKVCleaver or gMKVExtractGUI to extract/demultiplex mkv video and audio files.

Version history / Release notes / Changelog:
2016-04-23 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* Released v9.1.0 "Little Earthquakes".
* mkvmerge: MPEG TS/teletext enhancement: included the teletext page number in the JSON/verbose identification output as track property "teletext_page".
* mkvmerge: MPEG TS bug fix: the "text_subtitles" property of the JSON/verbose identification modes was always set to true for all subtitle tracks, even for those that aren't text subtitles (VobSub, PG).
* mkvmerge: MPEG TS/teletext enhancement: if a teletext track contains multiple teletext pages then mkvmerge will now recognize all of those pages as separate tracks to merge instead of only merging the first page. See #1662.

2016-04-21 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvmerge: MPEG TS/teletext enhancement: mkvmerge will now ignore obviously bogus PTS values for teletext tracks and use PTS from earlier audio or video packets instead. See #1662.

2016-04-20 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvmerge: MPEG TS/teletext bug fix: the language code signaled in the MPEG TS PMT is taken into account when selecting the character encoding to use during decoding of the teletext subtitles, not just the "national character set" stored in the teletext page headers. For example, a German teletext page may signal "national character set" 0 (English) whereas it's actually 4 (German). See #1662.
* mkvmerge: teletext decoding bug fix: fixed dropping of certain non-ASCII characters in rare circumstances due to wrong filtering of already UTF-8 encoded strings.
* mkvmerge: MPEG TS reader enhancement: teletext tracks of type 5 (hearing impaired) are recognized as subtitles, too. Implements #1662.

2016-04-16 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool enhancement: characters that aren't valid in path names are automatically removed from the output file name. Implements #1647.
* MKVToolNix GUI: bug fix (Windows only): the GUI didn't start if the USERNAME environment variable contained characters that aren't allowed in file names (e.g. : or ?).

2016-04-13 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvmerge: AVI reader bug fix: fixed reading files where the file ends in the middle of an audio chunk. Fixes #1657.

2016-04-11 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvextract: new feature: added support for extracting WebVTT subtitles. Implements the extraction part of #1592.
* mkvmerge: new feature: added support for reading WebVTT subtitles from WebVTT and Matroska files. Implements the merge part of #1592.
* mkvmerge: enhancement: when reading Matroska files not created by mkvmerge that contain chapters the existing edition UIDs and chapter UIDs are removed and random ones created. This is necessary as not only HandBrake but other tools assign sequential numbers starting at 1 for each file. Therefore there are two chapter entries with the UID 1, two with the UID 2 etc. and those should, strictly speaking, be treated as if they were a single chapter whereas the user expects those entries to stay separate entries.

2016-04-09 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* MKVToolNix GUI: new feature: added an option in the preferences ("Merge" ? "Output") for controlling whether or not the GUI clears the "output file name" input upon removal of the last file.
* MKVToolNix GUI: new feature: added an option in the preferences ("Merge" ? "Default values") for controlling whether or not the GUI clears the "file title" input upon removal of the last file.
* mkvmerge: bug fix: mkvmerge will no longer abort reading a Matroska file with a structural error right before the first cluster. Fixes #1654.

2016-04-03 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvmerge: enhancement: added the muxing date in both local time zone and UTC to verbose/JSON identification outputs (keys "date_local" and "date_utc", formatted after ISO 8601) when identifying Matroska files.

2016-04-02 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvmerge: enhancement: added the minimum timestamp for each track in verbose/JSON identification outputs (key "minimum_timestamp") when identifying Matroska files. At most the first ten seconds are probed; if no block is found for a track within that range then the key is not output for the track.
Also added "muxing_application" and "writing_application" to the "container" section of the output. Currently those are only set for Matroska files.

2016-03-31 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* MKVToolNix GUI: merge tool change: attachments from source files have been moved from the "Tracks, chapters, tags and attachments" list on the "sources" tab to a new list on the "attachments" tab. That way all existing attachments and all the ones to newly add will be shown in a single tab. This makes it easier to decide which attachments will have to be added and which can be removed.
* MKVToolNix: merge tool bug fix: when adding playlists the GUI won't ask the user whether or not to scan if there's only a single playlist in that directory.

2016-03-29 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org>
* mkvmerge: bug fix: AVC/h.264: fixed handling of interlaced frames with bottom field first.
* MKVToolNix GUI: bug fix: fixed huge memory consumption (e.g. allocation of 2 GB for a JSON file of 650 KB) in the JSON library by updating said JSON library. Fixes #1631.

I had no problems as usual installing MkvToonix 7.6.0..I ran Malwarebytes malware scans on the package as well as the install and everything cam up clean and the program works fine.I have been using it since it came out on the 8th..The problem is Avast and thats why I opted for a different anti virus years ago..Good Luck..;)~

Me too.I couldn't download the latest release (mkvtoolnix 7.6.0). Avast blocks the download and says it's infected with "Win32:Evo-gen [Susp]". Version 7.5.0 works fine.

MKVToolnix is a great tool, but not without flaws.

To begin with it would be appreciated that ANSI subtitle files would be auto-converted to UTF-8 on some languages, otherwise some characters won't show fine.

There are some issues when muxing with contained files, like say, a h264 stream and a mp4 contained AAC stream. In this situation it's possible the audio won't play in your output file.

I would also had like for some time now that you could choose what pieces to keep when splitting a file, avoiding to write to disk the whole video.

Normally when muxing out a file you will encounter some errors in the log window. Sometimes without describing exactly the reason, nor allowing you to find it somewhere else on the net, leaving you wondering.

Finally in recent versions, probably since 7.0.0, MKVToolNix takes almost double the time for the remux (ie 6 minutes instead of 3). This was voiced in its support thread but nobody replied back. My system is a standard recent one 4670K, 8Gb 1600, 750 Ti on Win7x64 SP1, so this is something that should affect generally and a serious regression in my humble opinion.

This is hands-down the BEST video editing software in the market, period !! I have been using mkvtollnix since version 7.1.0, converted many of my Blu-ray to MKV files from various formats (DTS HDMA, TrueHD, m2ts, ts, etc.), as well as adding additional audio/subtitle tracks to a movie, it is extremely reliable and very simple to use. I also use tsMuxeR, but my experience is that txMuxeR is less reliable, it actually failed on me on multiple occations. Since version 7.2.0, mkvtoolnix added support for "play-list" (.mpls) files - this is freaking awesome, it is very helpful if you want to convert the "seamless branching" Blu-rays, mkvtoolnix will read the Blu-ray structure for you, and you no longer need to add each A/V file individually to the main page in order to piece them together for the whole movie.

The author of MKVtoolnix already wrote a FAQ-entry about the non-existent problem:

I ran the MKVtoolnix 7.2.0 on both Portable and Installer through VirusTotal and Panda reports "Eicar.Mod" as a Suspicious file. I then checked MKVtoolnix 7.1.0 and it is Clean. So, may be the Author can shed some light on this, until then I am staying with 7.1.0 Portable.

Easy to use tool for multiplexing Matroska streams with a Windows native GUI. Flexible, logically organized, and supports almost all source formats well. De facto standard.

The existance of this GUI program is a major reason for the success of MKV. Creating files this format is so much easier and overall more reliable than working with AVIs or MPEG Programs, let alone MP4s. Last time I checked, MkvToolNix did not have a tag editor. And it is not a coincidence that very few other programs can display tags, and nearly no releases are actually tagged. (It is possible to use a recent version of foobar2000 for fast, customizable tagging.)

During its development, the author has made a number significant changes to the format of files written by MkvToolNix, such as the format of MPEG sequence headers, stream header compression, and presence of a seek element, which might not be immediately apparent. Some of these changes had since been reverted. I would excercise caution before upgrading to a new version, thoroughly read the changelog and test that the output files are working on all devices and players they are intended to work, and that no unexpected artifacts appear and seeking works.

great tool, but I don't like the lack of .wmv support. Also, some videos are stuck in permanent pause mode. The video is all there, but it stays frozen. Advancing it by seeking brings you to wherever you want, but still no movement. Splitting by timecode is a great idea, but the program seems to split on keyframes rather than where you tell it. Many videos can only be split at 10 second intervals regardless of what timecode you enter

Great job switching to 64bits (at least for me it is), but it has a few bugs: if you had installed a previous version (I had v6.7.0 x32) it was (default) installed on a 64bits machine in C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVToolNix, but v6.8.0 x64 (also default) installs in C:\Program Files\MKVToolNix; so at first use MKVExtractGUI2 (which I use as GUI) doesn't seem to find the MKVToolNix executables, searching for the older path, and also demanding to be copied in the same directory as MKVToolNix (although is was copied in the new installed location). The only solution (that I've found) was to manually modify all the entries from the registry (C:\Program Files\MKVToolNix instead of C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVToolNix) and also modifying the Privilege Level of MKVExtractGUI2 (from file's Proprieties->Compatibility Tab->Privilege Level) to "Run this program as an administrator". From here, all seems to be back on the track...

Re: Post #12 by hello_hello - turning on "disable header removal compression for audio and video tracks by default" to fix files not playing on hardware players muxed with newer versions.

That was one of the first things I tried, right from the first version to implement it, but it has never made any difference. All files muxed with versions 4.0.0 and up will not play on any of my devices whether this setting is on or off. So something else is at fault. I've stayed with version 3.0.0 and have no problems.

First off: Its a great tool.-@ Post #2 by b8375629: Really? So, you cant download it from some site [which has nothing to do with the tool or its developer, besides, others obviously could)- and thats why you rate it down? SAY,HOW OLD ARE YOU? -
Anyway, I use this tool frequently, for years now. Never had any issue, everythings just fine.
While its steadily updated, its extremely versatile, as you can throw AVI, FLV, MP4 at it, set time delay, edit chapters, join MKVs etc. I use it mainly to dump unwanted audio-streams and for adding subs, at times for sync audiotracks. Its one small piece of essential, free software, it works like a charm and Im really thankfull M.Bunkus provided it. BTW if it wasnt for putting down one guys great work, it would be sort of amusing some comments I read.
GO LEARN INSTEAD OF BABYCRY, and BE THANKFULL, for its PROVIDED FOR FREE and ITS GREAT! ;)

Wow, you go to the fosshub.com and they've disabled direct downloads using Firefox. I have the HTTP Referer enabled and yet I have to use IE to download it. What kind of bandwidth horseshit is that?

At least I can download it directly from videohelp. Still I'm rating it 1 = Bad for sending me to a download link that's disabled. Poor way to handle this.
