The official release no longer works on Windows 7 - it is now only viable on Win10 and above. There are unofficial versions around that have been modded for Win7. I think this should be noted on this page. I've been using it for years and is really great. Once I get my Win 11 machine up and running I can update from my present early release v64. My ancient Win7 machine just keeps working nicely and reliably but you have to progress.

@Ultra3,

I'm aware of the VxKex project and hacked QT6 dlls, it is an interesting project and perhaps a potential future solution for the average user that would not know how to rewrite the source and compile it. However, in its current incarnation it won't work when the dependencies are built into the program file(s), as is the case with MKVToolnix and many others. Moreover, it hasn't been updated in over 3 months and it's current development is paused. Same applies for the hacked QT6 dlls. In their current state neither VxKex nor the hacked QT6 dlls are realistically an option for programs with embedded dependencies.

@ JustMe

Well, since I expect/hope that alternative builds of MKVtoolnix WILL NOT BE provided by Mosu himself,
who seems to be the only one who cannot live without Qt...
well, you get the idea ;-)

A graphical user interface specific for Windows 7 and 8.1 could be written in a DotNet language, or even in Java, why not? MKVtoolnix is just a GUI for mkvmerge, mkvinfo, mkvpropedit and mkvextract, and a GUI can be written and compiled with better languages or/and tools, it doesn't have to give a "raison d'être" to Qt :-)

@JustMe

There might be one more option. There seems to be modified QT6 version for Win7 here:
https://forum.qt.io/topic/133002/qt-creator-6-0-1-and-qt-6-2-2-running-on-windows-7
I've been already able to run another QT6 based software using that (Calibre 6.1 - https://calibre-ebook.com/download).
There you need to use as well VxKex to run it - https://github.com/vxiiduu/VxKex
But MKVToolnix seems to have QT embedded in main exe, so it is not possible just easily replace those binary files like for Calibre.

All we need now is for this program to Mux into a Bluray Format and then this thing would be beyond super more than this great software is already.

@El Heggunte,

Sure, that can be a third choice, but if you're going to rewrite the source code to kill a dependency on QT6 only to have the CLI, you might as well go the full mile so the CLI and GUI are both functional.

It's not a big deal to sub QT6 for QT5 and re-compile. I may not fully agree with the author's QT6 related decisions under the circumstances, but I was/am a software author myself and have had free to the public projects also and therefore I respect the fact it's his perrogative to do so. You can't really argue with free.

@ JustMe:

there is a third choice — rewrite the source-code, so that the command-line executables do not depend on the so-called QT framework. Many users of Windows 7 and 8.1 wouldn't mind doing without the MKVtoolnix GUI.
Anyway, it sucks that Moritz Bunkus cares less about improving mkvmerge itself and much more about pushing the use of QT. Forcing the command-line executables depend on the bloatware GUI maker was the giveaway.

A few FYIs:

The author of MKVToolnix again switched to using QT6 with v69.0.0 which rendered the program unusable with Windows 7, 8 and respective server version.

The reason he is using QT6 is because he can and wants to, there is no real programing or compatibility reason. That's his perrogative.

Essentially, if you are a new or long time user of the program and don't want, need or can't update your OS, you're SOL as per the author. Obviously, he doesn't care about the amount of users this move may affect or cost him.

The "https://mkvtoolnix.download/windows/continuous/64-bit/69.0.0/" depository did briefly have 69.0.007 versions that were compiled with QT5 (V5.15.5), probably by mistake, which work perfectly with Windows 7/8, but were quickly replaced with same named files compiled with QT6 (V6.3.1).

If you have the following 69.0.007 versions bearing the below SHA-1, they will work with Windows 7/8 and respective server version:

B5D5E22968F947558BFB100EF06D37A1FB3BC7C4 mkvtoolnix-32-bit-69.0.0-revision-007-ga64005aa6-setup.exe

For those that want to continue using MKVToolnix in the future, you have basically two (2) choices; 1) Change OS to at least Windows 10 or 2) Compile your own from source using QT5.

Hope this helps answer some questions and shed light on the matter.

OVERDUE WARNING:
"Supported Windows versions are Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 and newer."
The last version compatible with Windows 7 is the one I'm using right now
(64.0.0.45).
The cause of the incompatibility with Windows 7 is the ""latest and greatest"" version of the QT graphical interface.
The author of MKVtoolnix not only uses it when he would not have to,
but also makes QT a requirement for building the non-GUI (command-line) applications of the suite.

chucknolan, it's easy to "preserve the original date or make a new one." I personally always set the time/date to the beginning of that year. For instance, everything that I mux in that calendar year will show UTC 2022-01-01 00:00:00 all by adjusting the cpu clock before starting the mux. It takes a minute longer but my info looks damn good lol

Does anyone have an idea on how to preserve the original "Encode Date", via MediaInfo.exe, after remuxing? I am aware that ffmpeg is capable of doing it, but I prefer using MKVToolNix (mkvmerge.exe) because the .mkv output is much better regarding MediaInfo.exe information? Basically, is there a command such as "--preserve encode date" available for mkvmerge.exe? Moreover, to the creator of MKVToolNix, if you're reading this, thank you for creating this program because it has served me very well.

People... really... WOW, longwin, write one yourself and let people like yourself, cut down all your hard work, that should make YOU feel REAL GOOD, Right? Oh, wait, you don't know how, you can only gripe about what others are doing for free. Don't bother to THANK them for all the time they do spend on developing the software and to GIVE IT AWAY... I got an idea, how about reporting the bug and go on about your business... sounds like you don't have a clue of what goes into developing software for other people to use and for them to download it, then try to install it on thousands of different computer hardware set ups & different version of Windows etc.. and the USERS computers having all kinds of buggy issues, then in turn, they GRIPE at the developers, which tries very hard to understand all the peoples issues and helps them out by staying up late nights and put TONS of hour into it, but you go ahead and bitch, moan, groan and gripe about it, they all deserve your hateful, spiteful temperament. I don't know of any good/great software that isn't updated on a regular basis to keep all people happy in use it... well almost ALL people.

I use this software a lot and it always works 100% of the time and my THANKS goes out to the people that make this software possible!!!

The author fixed so many bugs and create a new one (as far as I know).

So the program always has bugs to fixed. And version number will be 1000.0 soon.

After running mkvmerge, the information throwed by program is garbage.

May be this fixed and another new one is created.

Using Windows 10 64bit, MKVToolNix 56.0.0 and it works flawlessy (as previous versions), I can edit every field everywhere.

For those using older versions- 9.7.0 through 10.0.0 occasionally create corrupt .mkv files (.H264 + .FLAC + .SRT sources in my case). The file will play, but at some point the video will freeze for a few seconds and then continue and the audio will become unsyncronized.

Versions before 9.7.0 do not have the issue. I don't know about versions higher than 10.0.0 as I haven't used those.

Wow! I had been looking for a quick and easy way to permanently merge a subtitle file with an mp4 movie file so that my very deaf Mother may better enjoy the video of my late Father's 80th Birthday celebration. I found a video tutorial for MKVToolNix and decided to download the software to try. It was, immediately, so quick and easy to merge and save the completed file. I have only started to create the subtitle file, so only the first one is in place. I think that my rating for this will not change once I have completed the task. I have a lot of exploring to do here but many thanks already!

Digitalhobo....

This sounds similar to an issue I had a short time ago.

Drag and drop your files individually as normal
(up to 40 files seems ok - after that it can really start to slow down for this stage)
Then when its made all the tabs - go to the "multiplexer" drop down and select
"actions for all tabs" then "start multiplexing"
(do NOT use the main multiplex button)

It will then treat each file as an individual job.
You can set options as normal and they will be applied to each file.

It works really well but slow (as I mentioned below) if you have very many files.

Great tool for doing what its supposed to do. 10/10.

But I'm having a hard time creating multiple jobs in the job queue without ending up with one large file.

I've got a bunch of albums in DVD-Audio format. I want just the audio files. So I extracted the .dts audio tracks from the MKVs and want to put them back into an MKA container. Ok, no problem. I can do all of the tracks into one "album" MKA, but thats not what I want. I'd prefer Track1.mka, Track2.mka, Track3.mka, etc. But I can't quite figure out how to queue up each of those individual jobs. Every time I add 10 tracks to the queue, I end up with one large file.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

I cant seem to get to the developer site of late so I'll add some comments and suggestions here and hope thats ok.
First - get the program - what I'm saying should not detract from the overall use/functionality - its a great program.

My use may not be average so bear that in mind.

I'm converting a very large number of mixed videos to MKV and have some issues with the batch process:

1. This procedure requires a drag/drop of the filenames - however this process is incredibly slow.
It looks like its evaluating each file as its dropped - this can take 40minutes for 150 files
BEFORE you can tell it to process them - AND it locks out both the source (explorer) and its gui while
doing it - Also it looks like its using almost no processor I/O or ram - its VERY slow.

Can I suggest the drag and drop for batch mode just creates a file list then does the processing after you
tell it what you want to do (meaning you don't have to sit around waiting for it? Actual processing is VERY fast - often 1-2 minutes tops)
The drag and drop time does not seem related to the file size. (which is odd)

2. when processing it frequently writes a 0KB file and fails to add warnings or errors. Going back and doing them manually
converts them correctly.

3. Remove all files doesn't work on batch files

4. I've had occasional issue with the job list not being cleared when I close the batch tabs on unprocessed files
(EVEN when reloading the program - it goes looking for the files to process)

5. Dropping 600 files crashes back to the desktop - AFTER its spent an hour "reading" the files

The batch processing works and is a godsend (Thanks) but a bit of a redesign would be a great help.

once again - thanks for a great program - I'd be lost without it.

If there's a better place for this please feel free to copy it there.

Bug Report For MKVToolNix Installer Version

On Windows XP SP3, upon running the installer, this version of this program reports the Media Foundation Framework is not present on the system. This is correct, as Microsoft never made this Framework available for installation on Windows XP.

The installer gives an option to "install anyway". This was chosen and the installation completed.

Upon attempting to run MKVToolNix-GUI, this error resulted:

"__Entry Point Not Found__
The procedure entry point Direct3DCreate9Ex could not be located in the dynamic link library d3d9.dll."

This is the same error that results when attempting to run the "portable" version.

If this program is not designed to run on Windows XP then it should say so. (But I would expect a program that claims to be "portable" wouldn't care.)

Regardless of the age or any other parameter of the operating environment users might try, it is a basic tenent of software development to tell people what the REQUIREMENTS are.

I can't fault this excellent software or its generous, continuous development. I also use it in XP, but you must use version 10 which if memory serves is the last version to work in XP. Added benefits of mkv toolnix are if you have an audio synch issue in a mp4/h264 file and cannot work out the delay, then just put it through mkvtoolnix and it automatically finds the delay e.g -11ms,-83ms(check in media info later) etc.

I always like to extract the audio with Yamb(portable version only)first to find the volume level/clipping using mp3gain with aacgain exe renamed to mp3.exe and placed in the folder of mp3 gain. I then normalize the extracted aac fileif necessary. Then I remux and place in mkv container, if the audio was skewed or if I want to add an srt for foreign parts etc.

@Ally68
Mediainfo supports since v0.7.80 the statistic tags of Mkvmerge, it uses them for more precise bitrate calculation per track and now the tags aren't showed in the general section anymore (I didn't like those capital letter tags too). So you don't need to add a commandline option to remove them. The statistic tags are important for Mediainfo to calculate the bitrate of each track, if all tracks in the file have variable bitrate. Without the statistic tags Mediainfo doesn't show the bitrate per track, it shows just the overall bitrate. Also Mediainfo didn't show bitrate per track in a MKV file with combination of AVC and AAC at cbr, but now due to statistic tags it does.

***For Ally68***

You can disable the generation by passing mkvmerge the option --disable-track-statistics-tags. In mmg you can add that option via the Muxing → Add command line options dialog.

Note that if you re-mux a file containing these tags then you have to disable reading tags fromt the source file in addition to disabling the generation of new statistics tags with --disable-track-statistics-tags

I assume the attachments are added with the tracks so you know they're there without having to search the tabs. It does seem like a silly way of going about it, but it's early days and I guess it will be fixed at some point.

MMG was terrible with keyboard navigation, MKVToolNixGUI is set to repair that. Shifting the focus willy nilly destroys any possibility of decent navigation via keyboard. Mosu will have to come up with a better way of doing business, hopefully by allowing navigating tracks via keyboard somehow while within the properties section.

You can turn most of the warnings off in preferences, they're an OPTION to prevent loss of information and to clarify what the user intends.

Why even ask why anyone would want multiple tabs? Because you don't use it in the particular usage pattern you tend to find yourself in? I'll agree that not being able to replace a job with a new one efficiently is a problem that needs to be looked at, but questioning multiple tabs is just being obtuse.

MMG was never perfect, it was aging and was extremely limited. The new GUI is being designed to break those limits, it's an improvement and with improvement comes change. I'm kind of annoyed that the new GUI has keep the same Header Editor layout as MMG, THAT is one of the things I wanted to see changed by having all the properties on a single page.

Unless you have only a singe track in the file the tags aren't duplicating information. Once you get a second stream in a file it is impossible to know the length of any single track without parsing the entire file and therefore impossible to know the bitrate or the number of frames. Any program that's been giving out info about files without the tags and without going through every single bit in the file has just been guessing the contents of the file up to now. The developer of MediaInfo has been well aware of that since day one, he has had to deal with all the complaints when people realise MediaInfo gives out the wrong information so he's one of the biggest champions of the tags. If you have an MKV with only a single variable bitrate track amongst it's constant bitrate brethren and constant frame rate video the information MediaInfo gives out will be CLOSE ENOUGH that the inaccuracies won't matter, but wrong is wrong and when you come across a file that's not as clean cut MediaInfo output becomes worse than useless. _STATISTICS_WRITING_APP and _STATISTICS_WRITING_DATE_UTC aren't there to provide information to the user, they're there to make sure the tags belong to the actual file they're found in, they're security in case someone remuxes a file with a program that simply copies the statistics tags blindly. They have nothing to do with anything, and if anything simply signify how badly the Matroska specs were originally planned out.

The software is pretty solid. BUT, I do not like the "Tags" feature that was started in v7.0.0!

mkvtoolnix-gui is a train wreck. mmg separates elements into different tabs, which keeps things organised and clear, but mkvtoolnix-gui dumps everything into a single window, so you end up with subtitle tracks mixed in with 50 fonts and other tracks. This considerably increases the chance of making a mistake when you're remuxing files with a lot of tracks or attachments.

In mmg clicking on a subtitle track actives the "Track name" box so you can immediately type the name and quickly tab through the other boxes setting the parameters. In mkvtoolnix-gui you have to manually click to activate the Track name box.

The regular popup messageboxes in mkvtoolnix-gui like "Do you really want to close it?" are annoying and get in the way of getting things done. Everything now takes more clicks than in mmg.

Having the properties on the right instead of at the bottom makes the window much wider, which leaves less space for your file manager window when dragging files in. It also makes the properties feel cramped.

Having tabs for multiple open jobs is stupid. How I work is to do one file, add it to the queue, Ctrl+N, do the next file, add it to the queue, Ctrl+N, and so on. In mkvtoolnix-gui this leads to you having a tab open for every job, which is more likely to lead to confusion and mistakes, while adding nothing of value. To keep things organised you have to close each tab after adding the job to the queue, which adds yet more extra clicks compared to mmg.

Why would anyone want multiple jobs open in multiple tabs anyway? Does he think people like to start one job, set a few properties, start another job, set a few properties there, then go back to the first job and do a bit more there? I suspect most people work the same way as I do, doing one file, adding it to the queue and doing the next. With that approach there is simply no reason to have multiple jobs open in multiple tabs.

I remux about eight files per day, which was no trouble with mmg, but with mkvtoolnix-gui it's an incredibly annoying and laborious process. I've tried to like it, but ultimately mkvtoolnix-gui is a design disaster and is simply not worth using.

I ultimately ended up going back to 8.3.0 and will continue to use mmg until it stops working. After that I'll put the subtitles and fonts in a separate Subtitle and Fonts directory so they're loaded by the player without having to be muxed in.

mkvtoolnix was a great piece of software, but now it's worthless.

This is a great set of tools, handling all sorts of files for my favourite container, Matroska.
But, I really needed a way to process multiple files, and setting up each individual file with virtually identical settings began to wear on me.
So...
I wrote a batch program which will process a *lot* of files at one go. I call it MKVBatch, available on this site. Makes my life a lot simpler.
A profound Thank You to Moritz Bunkus for MKVToolnix.

Fanboy damage control aside, I stand by my earlier statement. This program is quite tedious and time-consuming when processing multiple files. The job queue 'isn't the best' because there is no job queue function to begin with. This is not a minor drawback in today's day & age.

This program lacks a batch file function. Many of today's encoders have the capability of putting multiple .mkv or .avi files into a que list for processing. If one has say 15 - 20 video files from a series, it gets quite tedious ticking and un-ticking boxes, doing each file one at a time. Pretty lacking by today's standards.

MKVToolnix is a great tool, but not without flaws.

To begin with it would be appreciated that ANSI subtitle files would be auto-converted to UTF-8 on some languages, otherwise some characters won't show fine.

There are some issues when muxing with contained files, like say, a h264 stream and a mp4 contained AAC stream. In this situation it's possible the audio won't play in your output file.

I would also had like for some time now that you could choose what pieces to keep when splitting a file, avoiding to write to disk the whole video.

Normally when muxing out a file you will encounter some errors in the log window. Sometimes without describing exactly the reason, nor allowing you to find it somewhere else on the net, leaving you wondering.

Finally in recent versions, probably since 7.0.0, MKVToolNix takes almost double the time for the remux (ie 6 minutes instead of 3). This was voiced in its support thread but nobody replied back. My system is a standard recent one 4670K, 8Gb 1600, 750 Ti on Win7x64 SP1, so this is something that should affect generally and a serious regression in my humble opinion.

This is hands-down the BEST video editing software in the market, period !! I have been using mkvtollnix since version 7.1.0, converted many of my Blu-ray to MKV files from various formats (DTS HDMA, TrueHD, m2ts, ts, etc.), as well as adding additional audio/subtitle tracks to a movie, it is extremely reliable and very simple to use. I also use tsMuxeR, but my experience is that txMuxeR is less reliable, it actually failed on me on multiple occations. Since version 7.2.0, mkvtoolnix added support for "play-list" (.mpls) files - this is freaking awesome, it is very helpful if you want to convert the "seamless branching" Blu-rays, mkvtoolnix will read the Blu-ray structure for you, and you no longer need to add each A/V file individually to the main page in order to piece them together for the whole movie.

Easy to use tool for multiplexing Matroska streams with a Windows native GUI. Flexible, logically organized, and supports almost all source formats well. De facto standard.

The existance of this GUI program is a major reason for the success of MKV. Creating files this format is so much easier and overall more reliable than working with AVIs or MPEG Programs, let alone MP4s. Last time I checked, MkvToolNix did not have a tag editor. And it is not a coincidence that very few other programs can display tags, and nearly no releases are actually tagged. (It is possible to use a recent version of foobar2000 for fast, customizable tagging.)

During its development, the author has made a number significant changes to the format of files written by MkvToolNix, such as the format of MPEG sequence headers, stream header compression, and presence of a seek element, which might not be immediately apparent. Some of these changes had since been reverted. I would excercise caution before upgrading to a new version, thoroughly read the changelog and test that the output files are working on all devices and players they are intended to work, and that no unexpected artifacts appear and seeking works.

Advancing it by seeking brings you to wherever you want, but still no movement. Splitting by timecode is a great idea, but the program seems to split on keyframes rather than where you tell it. Great job switching to 64bits (at least for me it is), but it has a few bugs: if you had installed a previous version (I had v6.7.0 x32) it was (default) installed on a 64bits machine in C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVToolNix, but v6.8.0 x64 (also default) installs in C:\Program Files\MKVToolNix; so at first use MKVExtractGUI2 (which I use as GUI) doesn't seem to find the MKVToolNix executables, searching for the older path, and also demanding to be copied in the same directory as MKVToolNix (although is was copied in the new installed location). The only solution (that I've found) was to manually modify all the entries from the registry (C:\Program Files\MKVToolNix instead of C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVToolNix) and also modifying the Privilege Level of MKVExtractGUI2 (from file's Proprieties->Compatibility Tab->Privilege Level) to "Run this program as an administrator". From here, all seems to be back on the track...

For those people who've left comments complaining about later versions of MKVMergeGUI creating MKVs which won't play on standalone devices, 99.99% of the time it's due to header removal compression. This feature is part of the MKV spec but it's not supported by many/most standalone devices. The solution is to go into MKVMergeGUI's options and to check "disable header removal compression for audio and video tracks by default". Once that's done MKVMergeGUI should once again create MKVs which will play on standalone devices.

Why header removal compression is enabled by default I don't know. It's probably the number one reason for "MKVs created by MKVMergeGUI won't play using my device" threads being started in forums. If not, it's maybe the only reason.

For those wishing to extract streams from MKV files, MKVCleaver is a nice companion tool to MKVMergeGUI.

None of the files output from version 4.0.0 onwards will play in any of my devices (Blu-ray player, multi-media TV, DVB box). I either get a file format not supported error or it will cause the device to freeze and then go in to standby. Newer versions (from around 5.0.0) also for some reason incorrectly save the files as using variable frame rate mode when they are in fact constant. Earlier versions do not do this. I don't know which changes made are to blame, but files from 4.0.0 up just aren't as compatible as from versions before this. My scores therefore are for version 3.4.0 and earlier.

Indeed, the problem is in your subs. I suggest Subtitle Edit. From the Tools tab you select Fix Common Errors. Check all the stuff you wish to fix. One option is to fix subs appearing on more than two lines.

If you are using Media Player Classic/ Home Cinema you can override the placement of subs
(Options->Subtitles->Default Style)

MKVtoolnix has got nothing to do with position of subtitles as far as I know.
If you have problems with subtitles, they are in the subtitles themselves.

Making chapter inside Matrsoka files, really something great, But I wonder is there any way to import chapter into MKV from DVD.

About the tools itself, It is really great...

Thanks people

It did what I needed it to do, which was to make corrections to language from 'Undefined' to 'English', and also remove the "Created with AutoMKV 0.98.4 etc, etc...". Looks like it can add chapters too.

I had a difficult time figuring out why it would not play on my Sony BluRay player (BDP-BX37). Turns out I had to turn off header compression (fixed globally under "File>Options>Disable header removal compression for audio and video tracks by default".

I would like to see more through documentation.

Excellent tool for splitting/merging/redoing audio for MKV/H264/mp4 files...

Dunno why the latest version 4.9.1 wouldn't "append" files, all previous versions 4.80./4.9.0 have no problems appending files after splitting.

An essential tool for muxing mkv.

For those who have problems with their mkvs playing on commercial players, turn header compression off. Click on the audio / video stream, Then below click on the tab "Extra Options". On "Compression" select none.

I have never had any problems with it!!
As stated, i think mostin5000 needs to learn what a false positive is!!
Checking the latest version on Virus Total it comes up with 1 out of 42 by some no name unknown antivirus software, and also as stated, i don't think i would trust mcafee to screen my coffee, Zone Alarm, well...

It has not caused 1 single problem on my 2 systems and has been a great asset!!

mostin5000 doesn't know how to use antivirus or antimalware software. This software contains none. It is open source and Mosu is a frequent poster on doom9's forums, where he provides excellent support and assistance to users for free. "Shutdowner" is a generic label applied any software that has the ability to shut down Windows - mkvtoolnix bundles this options so users doing long muxing tasks can leave their PCs unattended and not waste power. McAfee and ZoneAlarm are bloated and poorly, ineffectual, written to a laughable extent - UNLIKE mkvtoolnix, which is an excellent utility and the application of choice for muxing Matroska files on any platform.

@hbx2006: MediaInfo changed, in fact it was fixed to follow the matroska specs (google search).
As for the subtitles, RTFM, format specific options-->Charset.
As for your mkv's not playing, RTFM, extra options for the audio stream-->compression none.
Hint: File-->Options: Disable header removal compression will make this option permanent for future usage.

And this is not place for this stuff, as the comments form says, use the forum ;)

If makers of MKVtoolnix (GUI) are reading this:
When muxing i.e. h264+ac3+srt, then at each input file one can (should) also specify Language. The problem is, if I specify i.e. English language for video and audio stream, this setting somehow isn't written into final mkv file (however, language setting for srt file is written). I've checked this with MediaInfo, after my TV (LG LE8500) refused to play mkv files, which were created with MKVtoolnix v4.30, directly via USB.
Then I've downloaded older MKVtoolnix v3.40, remuxed the same way (as previously with v4.30) and this time Language tags are written into final mkv file -and my TV plays such file without a problem.
I've read somewhere, one should disable compression for versions 4.00 and above. I did that, but didn't help -so this wasn't the problem.
I assume, v4.40 has the same problem, but I can't confirm that (I've removed v4.40 and replaced with v4.30, before doing research).
Btw. I've also noticed, that mkv file muxed with older v3.40 is a tinny bit larger (about 500kb) than file comming from newer v4.30 -but it works.

A wish: I'd like to try something out (related to my TV's subtitle support)... Question: Is it somehow possible to mux srt file into mkv in ANSI instead being automatically encoded in UTF8?

This program worked well in version 4.0. However, in the current version I've been using (4.4.0), my mkv video files work fine on the computer, however they will not stream to my t.v. via the ps3, via ps3mediaserver. It keeps saying "data is corrupted". I've noticed by some other comments that wdlive does not stream these properly either. I guess it must be something about streaming these files. I don't know what wdlive uses to stream...maybe it's an incompatibility with Mencoder or TSmuxer (which ps3mediaserver uses). I guess I will revert to an older version. Pity, as I just muxed a ton of files that I will have to remux ):

Hello.
On my system, MKVMerge v4.2.0 and 4.3.0 (both installer and stand-alone) give some error during elaboration with, for example The Film Machine, AviDemux about audio. I cannot explain right the problem because I'm Italian, but with v4.0.0 and previous releases all works fine.
I hope these mistakes are resolving in the next future.
Thank you for interesting :)

With the 2 latest versions, I couldn't mux external .ass subs on mkv for some reason. So I went back to version 3.4.0. and everything is fine!

I don't know if the latest versions include settings that must be determined by the user to do things, I just know that with version 3.4.0 I do my job down with a couple of clicks. So I stick with that version.

Latest ain't always better.

Concur with MrBass. Reinstalled 4.3.0 and selected compression=none option for DTS file. Did not select any other Extra Options. Resulting MKV file will not play on my WD TV Live Media Player -- no video or audio. Had to manually reset the box to get it to play other files that were muxed with 4.0.0 or prior versions. Appears MKVtoolnix is on a development path that WDTV Live Media Players can't follow unless WD introduces a firmware change.

Confirming earlier post that versions of MKVtoolnix beyond 4.0.0 are not compatible with the WD TV Live Media Player. DTS files merged into MKV container using later releases are not playable. Release descriptions do not make this clear. Wasted many hours of troubleshooting before finding 7 September comment that identified compression action by newer releases as the culprit.

Absolutely ridiculous direction this is heading. Look at the changelog of header compression bugs. Anyone with a WDTV Live player steer clear of any new releases and just remux with 4.0.0 (last one with no compression on by default). 4.1.0 was decent but 4.2.0 and 4.3.0 is nothing but massive headaches for WDTV Live players even after setting audio track to compression = none. Author says hell no he'll change it nor even offer a default preference to have it turned off. At this point even a firmware update won't fix this mess that's been created. Reminds me of hackers who refused to use terms for 'copy' and 'paste' cuz technically they aren't correct. Well that Linux GUI died cuz they were pure thick headed thugs.

This is really the best tool for creating and modifying matroska files.

Should anyone experience problems, read the FAQs. If it's bug file a bug report. The audio problem some users experience is not a fault of mkvmerge. File a bug report for the player that is handling the matroska files.

I gave 9/10 for function... there is always something to improve.

It´s great...
The only problem is when I want to convert old .avi files to .mkv
The .avi contains xvid and mp3 amd its the video that is the problem.
The video gets corrupted. It plays fine in VLC but not in my media player.
If I import the created .mkv in avidemux2 I can easily see the fault.

The problem is solved by using version 3.4.0

otherwise its a great tool

Reason you don't get sound on your wdtv live is your DTS or AC3 track is using Header Compression when mixing. To solve this:

- choose Extra Options
- choose None for Compression
- voilà remux
