I used to use DVDShrink as the image output was far superior and sharper to CloneDVD using the default sharp and low compression-no more than 20%, keeping 80% of source input, but that came at a cost- pixellation and macro blocking. Even using the 'smooth' output still couldn't avoid macroblocking.

With CloneDVD compressing to 75% output the macro blocking is minimal and no dud scenes. DVDShrink expelled at low to medium bitrates but nearly half of my DVD inputs even using high bitrates ended up with some problematic scenes. CloneDVD has none of these problems and has become a very useful tool as it is dead easy to strip out menus and unwanted audio tracks/junk with it, but I wouldn't compress to more than 60% of the main video to be on the safe side. I sometimes compress a favourite film to 4.36gb(if a dual layered one!) then use MakeMKV to make a lovely mkv file of it.

May not have as much built in stuff as DVD shrink (I.E Combine programs to one structure) but it is the only one that can output a good movie folder from a faulty one when used with ANYDVD. dvd shrink sometimes mess up titles so I had to go back and re-rip them. So for archiving alone this is the way to go

Thought I would try this after reading the reviews, But when I did a test between clonedvd and dvd shrink, dvd shrink was about 3 minutes faster, For an old program shrink is hard to beat, and it sure works great.

The only thing that Shrink does better is blank out unwanted menu items - useful if you are using RipIt4Me. Other that that, this smokes Shrink.

I don't understand your comments cobalt, they make no sense. CloneDVD is faster, renders better, and is easier to use than DVD Shrink. It is also at least as, if not more, configurable than DVD Shrink. And, get this, it has it's own burning engine, unlike DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink was great in it's day, then Nero Recode came out and stomped it, which makes sense since Recode was created by the guy who created DVD Shrink. And then CloneDVD came out and put the rest to shame. The only other too that bears consideration is DVD Fab, but personally, I prefer CloneDVD.

The old and free DVD Shrink slaps this one around 100 times and than throws it in the garbage bin.

Why pay so much if there's a tool that is 100x better and an unlimited times cheaper alternative.

Just a great little program, simple in its genius. It has NEVER failed to rip or to burn. For example, I will get a "Calibration Error" from Nitwit Nero -- which always means that Nero has yet again miscalculated file size. Shut down Nero. Over to CloneDVD. Never a problem. It is fast. It is cheap. It is reliable. What more can one ask? And I love that little Mexican Hat Dance song that blares when the burn is done!

CloneDVD with AnyDVD is simply the best out there. Overall results is superb! CloneDVD is very user friendly and is updated on a regular basis. I have been using this software for the past year with 100%+ burns. Try the trial download and give it a whirl. You won't regret it...I didn't. Two thumbs up!!!

Have a support issue. I sent Slysoft support an issue. I have 2 DL DVD+/-RW drives, an HP TS-H552L Litescribe and a MicroAdvantage 16X8. The MicroAdvantage work fine, but the HP won't recognize a DL disk. They asked for screen prints of the Add/Remove programs list and my proceses from Task Manger. I supplied these and told them that the HP wouldn't recognize DL with CloneDVD/AnyDVD but other software works fine with it. They then asked if I was running Roxio DirectCD or Drag2Disc. I told them yes and re-told them about the HP not recognizing DL. They they said to deactive the Roxio stuff. I did this and stated again that the HP wasn't recognizing DL. Their last response was "So you won't try it. Ok, case closed". Their support was NOT a lot of help

Great software. This and anydvd make backing up a fast one step process. High quality down to 55%. Backs up ANY dvd in about an hour in a one step process. Before this I used dvddecrypter + dvd2one + copytodvd. Better then dvdshrink. Very easy to use. Almost no learning curve.

Basically, this tool plus SlySoft's AnyDVD will allow you to copy any DVD on planet earth - in perfect picture/audio quality. I've shrunk movie-only copies to a DVD-R, I've copied whole discs to DVD+R DLs. All with no problems whatsoever. This is the best and easiest tool I have used. I tested and tried a lot of different tools online (and lurked and read these pages for several months doing research), but this was hands-down the easiest to use and had no learning curve. So easy it's amazing that it works as well as it does.

Without a doubt the best 9>5 transcoder available. You can safely compress to 60% without visual quality loss. Results are indeed better than Dvd Shrink under heavy compression. It's much faster, also. Do not hesitate; Clonedvd2 is money well spent.

Hi!!

This tool is awesome!!! Super-fast, the quality is great and it's repairing possible authoring errors on original DVD's, that can be used as copy protection (for example "The Aviator PAL"...when I tried it with Nero or Shrink, they simply says, that the dvd structure is invalid and over). With using DVDFab Decrypter for ripping and Nero for burning, this is a perfect tool. I like the transcoding system very much (it just lowers the original curve of bitrate for desired percentage - that means no analyzing and super fast encoding and all parts of the movie have the same compression)!! That's the way, which Nero and others should go.

Nice program which worked fine until I upgraded to this version. Now writes coasters 2 times out of 3 to media I had been using with NO coasters previously. (Same spindles too--TDK 4X (Taiwan-Costco)and Taiyo Yuden 8x (RIMA).) Now get write errors about 30 seconds into the burn. (Pioneer 108, 1.20 firmware.)

My real complaint is with "support". After two emails and two weeks, still no reply.

Wonderful program! This is coming from someone who goes back to the days of X-Copy and X-Copy Xpress. CloneDvd, in conjunction with AnyDVD, provides the easiest (in my opinion), to date, way to back up a movie. It is ridiculously simple. Newbies might have some what of hard time in the beginning identifying what files they would not want to include in the final version of the back-up but most are not going to have that problem. Also, there are wonderful guides on the net and in this very own site that provide excellent assistance.

I would also have to agree with an earlier poster who hinted that with too much compression you are probably going to notice a difference to which I agree. Although you would have to compress pretty low (under 60%) to see any noticeable difference b/w orignal and copy.

Worth every penny; definately recommend.

bugged. If you backup a dvd with say 2 Audio Tracks
1.dts and audio track 2.ac3/2 (5.1) then select
choosse audio track 2 as default it will always select track 1.dts even if track 2.ac3 chosen as the default audio preference.

So no matter how many audio tracks you want to backup with the dvd whatever Clone dvd lists as audio track 1 will always be the default audio track.

Think program, in conjunction with AnyDVD or a similar program is very good for most movies. I really like the way it deals with unwanted extras. If it could do the same with menu titles (like the 30 second long Disney Digital intro for starters) it would get a 9 from me. The compression engine is okay, and it is much faster than Shrink, but I still prefer Shrink for higher compression scenarios. For example, the extended version of the Two Towers looked pretty bad using Clone, but looked almost perfect using Shrink and was thus worth (to me) the extra 87 minutes. Shrink also lets you replace menu titles with stills - you can replace the 3 or more minutes of fluff with "Please Press Menu Now", because the prohibitions are removed. For cartoons or 75% and higher quality, Clone is fine.

I much prefer this program to any other, including DVD Shrink.
It is so simple to use, there's hardly any settings you have to configure and the resulting DVD files produced are of excellent quality.I can hardly tell the difference between the original DVD files and the compressed ones.
The program is fast and reliable.I have no complaints whatsoever.
Great software,recommended.

The burning engine on this thing sucks. I've tried several versions of clonedvd and half the time I'll get writing errors saying I may have bad media or it will write but I"ll get a lot of digital arifacts on playback. VERY IFFY!! I'll use the same media (DVD+RW) and use DVD2one and copy2dvd and they work everytime, never a coaster. The only good thing about Clonedvd is the interface, but what good is that if it doesn't burn properly. I'll tried about every software and I always go back to DVD2one and copy2dvd.

I have tried a lot of other programs but this is by far the best. Just run anydvd in the background and use dvdcopy2 to backup any dvd you have. All the other programs i used would take about 3-4 hours from start to finish. This setup takes only 1 hour from start to finish. The quality of the dvd backup is awesome.
You can get them both from http://www.slysoft.com for around $70.00 and its worth every penny.

After the instant self destruct of 2.0.8.3 I am reserving judgement on this version until the dust settles and I am keeping 2.0.8.4 in reserve. So far it burns OK and copies of DVD-R-RW, DVD+R+RW are all readable on numerous machines.

It is good, but slow. Because it takes a half hour to make a back-up of DVDs. Besides, Nero takes just 15 minutes to make the same thing at "copy on the fly". If you have a good DVD-ROM % DVD-Rewriter, everything it's OK.

The most user friendly DVD back up tool I have ever used.

The back up DVDR' picture quality is also one of the best.

Forget about DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, DVDFab, DVDXCopy Platinum, DVD2One, Nero, CopyToDVD, InterVideo DVDCopy 2 or TMPGEnc Plus 2.5...

I used all and CloneDVD is the best.

You do need DVD Region-Free or AnyDVD together to copy copy-protected DVD.

What you paid, what you get.

POTENTIAL PROBLEM ALERT. I have updated to the latest version 2.0.8.3 and none of the DVDs (both DVD-R and DVD-RW) I have burned are playable on any of 3 Panasonic players I have tried. They all return a "not supported" error. DVDs I made just minutes before using the prior version are all playable AND the "unsupported" DVD-R is playable on another player, a Mintek. Really excellent stuff here. I've gone through many different methods and programs to find the 'perfect' solution, and for me it's DVD Region-Free to decrypt dvds on the fly (AnyDVD might also work, but it's been flaky for me) and this to copy. Very high quality, plenty fast, and easy to use.

What a great little proggy. I've gone from DVD X Copy to DVD Shrink for most of my DVD backups. Yes, I've tried all the more complex user-adjustable methods as well. DC4U, DIF4U, DVD Rebuilder, TMPEG DVD Author, Audition, Scenarist, ReAuthorist, Intervideo DVD Copy, ad infinitum. But this is the absolute quickest way to make a quality backup. I use DVD Encrypter to rip to HDD and then Clone DVD takes over. It will even erase a RW for you if you forgot, before it burns. No processing files to clean up after the burn(except those left by DVD Encrypter). And it will even copy DVD to DVD on the fly, though I haven't tried that yet. The quality of the copy was extraordinary. Colors were super vivid and crisp. No vertical bars or banding and stills were excellent.

The Best...It is an incredibly piece of software to use. You might need a guide from this site, for example, if you're a newbie to the program but it is sooooo worth it. That's how I got to learn how to use the program (a guide) and I am so glad I did. Ripping my movie first with DVD Shrink and then using Clone DVD - you can't be the ease of use and the quality afterwards. The program just keeps getting better and better with each release.

- Works fast
- Let's include only what you want (menus, extras, etc.)
- Can now also burn

You just can't beat this.

Simply the best, and the best just got better. This is as easy as it gets, even noobs should have no problems with this piece of software. Paired with AnyDVD or DVD Region-Free this is the ultimate DVD backup tool. All of the issues with CloneDVD have been addressed in CloneDVD2. The only feature missing is Dual-Layer writing support and I'm sure that will be addressed in a future revision. Can you imagine paying $100 or more for DVD X Copy? I can't.

CloneDVD with the combination of AnyDVD rocks!!!!! The one thing while reading through the forum is that there are people complaining that the quality bar does not change when you take out some language tracks. Why would anyone care so much about that??? I would think that removing some of the audio tracks is not going to make that noticable of a difference in picture quality. The only movies that I have not been able to back up had scratches on them. Once again CloneDVD rocks!!!!!

This tool is great. It can be a little confusing when you are selecting the video clips, but if you choose the pre-selected one, it is usually right. From time to time you will have to select a different one. You will need to use ANYdvd 3 with this software. If you have anyDVD running in the background you will be able to burn all dvd's.

I use CloneDVD with DVDShrink 3.1.x I use shrink to, well Shrink (if necessary) the menu, the main movie, and the extras that I want (it requires a little bit of calculation). Then I use CloneDVD to get a DVD with just what I want. I prefer this method because I have found DVDShrink's compression far superior to Clone's. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to get backups that start up at the main menu.

Maybe V2 will have good enough compression so that I can dispense with this (although Shrink removes the change layer command and decrypts). We shall see.

Watch for the MAX write speed on the last screen, just before you burn, CloneDVD seems to confuse CD-R write speed with DVD-R write speed and if you trust MAX write speed without checking ... burning will fail or the DVD quality will suffer.

With a LG 40404B using X4 DVD-R media, Clone DVD wanted to write at X8 !

I am quite new to burning DVD's. Started with Nereo Recode2 and had good success with Anydvd runing in the background. Occasionaly I had some problems with Recode and decided to try the Preview version of Clone2. I must say I am impressed. So far no burning problems and very easy to use. I dont know how (if it does)burn on 2 disks but burning on 1 dvd works like a charm. I would not mind putting my money on this product. The quality is very good. I had a problem backing up "Finding Nemo". I dont know what went wrong but I could not go pass the menu on my stand alone player when I played it. I reburned with Nero Recode and it worked just fine. So I think may be one needs several tools to succed at burning DVDs. Correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for a vast amount of knowlege on this forum (and on this site) and some very wonderful people with a wealth of knowledge ready to help!

With Gratitude,
Suglach.

I currently use CloneDVD with DVD Decrypter or Pinnacle InstantCopy 8 with DVD Decrypter. CloneDVD produces relatively good quality DVDs, however it cannot match InstantCopy in terms of quality. It beats InstantCopy in speed though, as it does not have to do the extra analysis that IC has to. I like it better than IC, in that it seems to be more forgiving in terms of selecting which extras to keep. There have been times where I remove certain items with IC, and the DVD crashed my software dvd player. Not the case with Clone DVD. I also like that it is very easy to retain menus (unlike DVDShrink). Basically if I'm doing a DVD that is giving IC problems, I do it in CloneDVD, so far between the two programs, I have not encountered a DVD that I could not copy.

Needed Features:
Deep Analysis for better quality (ala DVDShrink and IC).
Option to split to 2 DVDs
More accurate quality/compression meter

In regards to sparks:
"Is clonedvd this slow for everyone? I am not impressed.
please correct me if I am wrong but one program to hd to dvd

Ummm it doesn't matter if it's one program or three, the same process still needs to be done. Rip dvd, compress video, and burn. Doesn't matter how many programs you have doing it, the same basic process has to occur, so no, it should not be a LOT faster. Also like you said "good but slow", look around this site or doom9 and you will find that most times you have to sacrifice time to get better results.

great tool, very fast with superior quality! Maybe only istant copy give better quality but is too slow (or dvd2dvdr or dvdeasy but they can't keep extras, menus..). Only 2 things I dislike.
1) You can't split to 2 dvdr.
2) It shows the quality considering you keep all languages. If you deselect the other languages you will not know the quality/compression you will get. However the encoding proceed right to fit the the movie to a dvdr, so the real quality will be better than the % you saw on the second screen if you deselect some ac3.

Well I am new to most of this but I read a few guides and started making backups but it seemed slow with tooo many programs. Dvd encryptor to copy to hd, dvd2one to another hd to get one cd then nero to burn....good but slow.
Liteon dvd quick to rip
optorite 4x burner

So after reading about cloneDVD and anydvd well now just plug and burn...should be great.

This was the lord of the rings, tried both ways

well after I used it it was 3 minutes faster than the old way of using 3 programs to burn a disk. And only one program compared to 3.
3 minutes??

Is clonedvd this slow for everyone?
I am not impressed.

I ran Clone (with Any DVD 3.2.1.1) for the first time with a +RW (wanted to check it out without making coasters), and it ran flawlessly. I then copied a DVD onto a Laser DVD-R 4x and again it was great.
Since then it reads, and after I put in a disc, it does the "erasing" thing for what seems like a long time, and then starts "writing", but shows no progress (0%) for a couple of minutes and then spits out the disc saying that it is unusable. The disc surface shows a very small written section and is now a nice shiny coaster.
I caught one disc after the long "erasing" just before it wrote, and copied onto it using Nero and it was fine.
I don't understand why Clone did the first two discs with no problems and the next 5 (using various different settings like speed etc, and 2 different versions, with computer re-boots in between etc) were coasters.
I now use Clone to "rip" to hard drive, and then Nero to burn to DVD-R at 4x which works great, but it is not as simple as using Clone. It is a pity because it is a great little programme.

Easy to use,but as per the previous post, the quality bar does not change as you deselect audio and subtitles. This is it's only major flaw. You can get rid of the FBI warnings and other annoying screens with ifoedit and vobrator.
Works great with anydvd and calculates file sizes much better and more consistantly than instant copy.

Very good of stripping unwanted material, and very good of recognizing different angle stream if the movie have multiple angles. Almost perfect, except for the following:

1. CloneDVD does not backup copy-protected DVDs
2. There's no way of get rid (or replace) of the FBI screen if you want to keep the menu structure
3. When re-author (i.e. Copy DVD Titles), the selection of the audio, subtitle, etc. is a screen after you select which title you want to copy. Let's say after select certain title you want to copy, the "quality" percentage bar is at 91%, and when you go to the next screen, and deselect a couple of audio stream, this should improve the quality to 100%. Well, it does not. If you went back to the previous screen it still show 91%. I try this scenario with the same movie with DVDShrink or Nero Recode, and it did improved to 100% on the "compress" bar if you did deselect the extra audio streams.

Other than the above, CloneDVD is very good. Like I said, almost perfect.

CloneDVD is the Best on the Net.
Don't waste your time with other Programs.
DVD Quality. Works best with AnyDVD to unlock DVD's

STAY AWAY FROM "DVD X Copy Platinum" You have no control over your DVD's ie: Speed, Quality, Compression etc.

The ULTIMATE DVD-9 (doubled layered) to DVD+/-R backup software.

I have used:
DVD X Copy
DVD X Copy Xpress
DVD2One
Intervideo DVD Copy
And this program beats them all, and by a long shot!

Not only works great, but also looks and feels cool. Got to try it! And no, I do not work for Elby (the company that created the software).

The good:
1) Complete control of the backup up process, but at the same time it is child proof easy to control the options.
a) You first choose which titlesets you want with a nice little screen playing it at fast speed so that you know what titleset it is.
b) If you want you check and uncheck audio tracks and titkeset. Which is great you don't want unnecessary sountrack reducing the video quality of your backups (note audio tracks are not compressed in this or any other DVD backup software I know).
c) choose your burner or make an DVD iso image.

2) It is very fast, although not as fast as DVD2One the Ferrari of video compressors.

The Bad
1) The only major drawback of this program is that it does not contain an option to copy a double layered DVD into 2 DVDs a la DVD x Copy: without compressing. It is the only thing missing to give this program full 10s.
2) No decrypter included, you need DVDdecrypter share-support/ware, or release $40 for AnyDVD.

Conclusion

There is another DVD copy software that allows this level of control in your DVD backup, but it leaves a nag screen in your copied DVD with a copy warning, and it cost 3 times as much, its caledd DVD X Copy Platinum.

I love this tool. I am a previous DVD2ONE user and used to champion it since it was the fastest tool and since ripping the movie only gave me a good quality backup. While I never cared for extra features on a DVD, I still bemoaned the fact that DVD2ONE did not let me at least keep the menu structure. Having the menus and being able to access specific scenes gives my copies more of an original copy feel to them. The whole process does take a little longer than DVD2ONE, but being able to keep the menu and the fact that it has a writer built in make the extra time well worth it. This program is a great compromise for those who want great quality backups but don't want all of the menus and extras completely gutted.

Awesome program when using with anydvd but there's a couple of things that need work. Like the fact that when you remove audio tracks doesn't improve video quality when trying to fit the movie on a disc and you can't select order of play when riping the movie along with some extras. If it would do that then I would give this program an overall 10 but for now I only give it a 7 and still using dvdshrink since it does all that.

You must install ANYDVD to backup copy protected disks (i.e. virtually all movies), but once you do that WOW! It is soooooo easy to make backups with CLONEDVD. I've almost lost valuable disks due to surface damage, now I can backup my entire collection with ease. CLONEDVD takes around 40 minutes to backup a long movie on my machine (Pentium4 3GHz) either to an ISO image or directly to a 4.7Gb recordable DVD. No longer do you have to concern yourself with the size of the original movie, CLONEDVD compresses it to fit including all the menus. The compression quality is very good, but if you wish to retain the maximum quality you can decide what DVD extras you don't need to keep (e.g. foreign language soundtracks, commentaries, menus etc) so that your movie will fit uncompressed.

CLONEDVD is the new king of DVD backup. HAIL TO THE KING!

Please bear in mind you MUST use ANYDVD to backup protected disks. See link below ---v

This program is great because it lets u back up DVD-5 as well as DVD-9 dvds. Now this is normal but the special thing is when it comes to DVD-9 movies you have both the options of removing the parts you dont want as well as having the ability to re-encode the files. Normally i have to use two separated programs to do this. For example i had a DVD-9 movie which i wanted to backup. I first removed the extras i didnt want then i re-encoded the files- ensuring maximum quality- all with very few steps to do.

The re-encoding alogorithms are good as the picture quality i have i have got is very impresive.
In the past i have used the following and Clonddvd beats all of them.
DVD X Copy
DVD2ONE
DVD Shrink
DVD X Copy Xpress

Finally you get a manual with the prgram that you can access while using the program

THIS IS THE ONE AND ONLY.

You only need AnyDVD and Clonedvd to do perfect backups. Anydvd starts in your taskbar and you don't need to do nothing. You won't even notice it.

Then Original on DVD-ROM, blank on recorder and 3 clicks.

Backup in 30 to 40 min in a Pentium with 4x recorder (I made a single layer disc backup in 22 min incl recording). AMAZING.

That's all we've been dreaming...

I'm disappointed. We have plenty of DVD->DVDR conversion applications. What we don't have is a program to perfectly clone DVD-R and DVD-Data discs. Screw video. I expected Elby to release a DVD version of the great CloneCD, but was sorely disappointed. I have data and unencrypted DVD5 discs to copy on-the-fly, and RecordNow and Nero just won't cut it on a few of them. Thanks for nothing Elby. I did try the program out on a movie, and it was okay, but the 4x disc in my 105 threw the timing gauge all off. The program needs more features (like backup and data options) and better tweaks on what it DOES do.
