Some really excellent work has be done to get this once infamously buggy software to the now stable realm. Quite difficult to navigate at first and takes some getting used to, but once mastered incredibly useful tool with a plethora of avisynth filters to do the job.
I would however like some option choices to do an ivtc combined with an easy decomb as in Handbrake, because in avidemux it's a pain setting up and getting the desired outcome without messing it up filterwise. Very good otherwise.

X264 still doesn't support encoding video to 10 bit again, which is a shame.
x265 supports encoding video to 10bit but some of the encoded videos still have frame failures.
If you don't mind having 2 jobs, use this software to encode in 8bit, it does well, and then use other software to encode x264 or x265 in 10bit.

It's very good to do what I want it to do. I need something to resave on precise frame instead of skipping. I mean I can resave it but file size is bigger.

Really has become a plethora of features, fixes etc. It works one day, the next it doesn't. Updated to fix, then more bugs introduced. Neverending! Find a build your comfortable to work with- meaning crashes are few in your system and stick with it. I'm staying with the portable Winpenpack version. Those revisions are very stable.

To get this to now work in XP you must disable disable DXVA2 in the display option in preferences. Choose OpenGL instead in the display box and 'Don't' tick the below GUI option OpenGL. Leave it alone or the program won't open. Do all these things and runtime errors disappear.
This will most likely be the last working version of Legacy XP. The xPenpack portable works really well. Also in 2.7.6 the shutdown feature after encoding has thankfully been restored.

Reviewing this for XP only. Sorry 2.7.6 is no good for 32 bit XP, because as soon as you load an input video file Avidemux crashes throwing out error message 'runtime error!" I reverted back to last version 2.7.4-5 which works well.

Lots of options, but sime are broken eg muxers etc. I checked the autocrop and it is still totally broken in every build to date. Developer does not seem bothered by it too much, but keep including it unfixed in builds, yet fixes tons of other bugs showing up. You'll probably find a bug or two and have a few crashes.😂

My only moan is that wretched autocrop feature has never worked in any version post 2.6 branch. I use a specially revised portable version-link below- as the installers gave me problems in Win7 and XP causing a buggy install and corrupted files. The 32bit version 2.7.4(XP+)works well autocrop besides!

I'm using the earlier winpenpack 32 bit version which has proven very stable. The latest 2.7.6 for me is just no good on any platform of Windows from XP to Win10. One thing I'll say is that the autocrop option is still broken in any version of AviDemux. Just a useless feature.
Anyway glad for this working 2.7.4 version autocrop beside. I also wish there was more documentation on it too, especially more complex features like how to correctly use the ivtc and deinterlace filters eg in a hybrid NTSC dvd etc, otherwise big thanks to the developers for their continuing work.

Sniffa you need to use Handbrake to convert your video then place the converted file into AviDemux it should then open the file.

"Works well!" Yeah right! Maybe if you can get it to without crashing. Abysmally unstable software in earlier incarnations and even now with bug regressions. 32bit is marginally better. Also nowhere does this still work in XP as stated on its homepage.

Maybe a cleanup of temp files generated or tweaking of settings in the portable or his system playing up. In any case there should be no reg changing pertaining to the portable as would violate the purpose of it. I installed in XP and saw no such message.

The uninstaller did not work on my 64-bit Windows 8.1 system for version 2.75 & 2.76.

Most of the issues/bugs appear to be 64 bit related. Stick with 32bit versions for stability. I'm running the 27.4-5 paf from portapps(when you install it, either 32bit or 64 bit is installed) and it works fine, even on XP. The version from winpen portable works very well too. 2.7.6 I will test later.

Setting size does the video only and is not a bug, so the oversize is the size of your audio. That is how AviDemux is designed. Other programs usually have the target size including the audio as well. Use a bitrate counter which might work out the video size for you instead. These later versions of AviDemux are stable with just the odd bug, but certainly better than older builds.

Both 2.7.4 and 2.7.5 builds have a bad bug with the size option in the H264 GUI as mentioned in the previous review. Setting any mb size for the 2 pass is pointless as the file comes in way over it. The bitrate setting is accurate 100%. Please fix this sizing error. Despite that the software is stable.
Just the odd crashe after removing a sharpening plugin filter after deciding not to use it. When this happens you have to reopen the program. I like the software and it's good that people are still developing it. Thankyou for that.

I tested out the 32 bit build on XP. The encoding part is stable, but selecting a file size rather than bitrate is not. I encoded a size set at 702mb using two pass including copying my 64kpbs audio file- expected more or less a 700mb sized file. What I got was a 768mb file size. Using bitrate set at 702kbps the exact size was achieved and a 698mb final sized file including the audio.
During the initial filter set up test, some filters which I decided to remove crashed the program causing exception such and such. The mkv default muxer is very stable, but in a test I chose mp4v2 from the drop box instead, that was not so stable and crashed. Best to stick with the mkv muxer.
My observations are use a bitrate size or the 1 pass CRC quality, but not a specific mb size as it is totally inaccurate.

I still can't work out what its Xvid quantization option is using the drop down Macroblock decision choices- is it best to have 'None' or does choosing any of the others break hardware compatiblity? Maybe somebody who encodes Xvid using AviDemux could comment on this. I hardly use Xvid these days, so no worries.
Let's hope it proves stable or I will revert back to 2.7.2 which proved to be crash free in my systems.

I think aviDemux is getting quite close to a final 2.7.3 stable version as this latest nightly is near enough bug free(until someone reports!) as it fixes previous ones/regressions.

Don't know why there are so many bad reviews here. I've been using it for the past few days, editing/copying many videos, and encoding videos by way of bench-marking a couple of computers, and I haven't seen a single crash! I did some across one bug dealing with the Opus audio encoder - and the reason I'm here looking for a fix! I get an "Unsupported frequency" error, even when one of the supported frequencies is selected. Downloading & installing the current nightly build doesn't help. Nevertheless, a great little program imo.

Seeing similar complaints to what I was experiencing. When updating to 2.7.3, the installer failed, and when I went to use it, it was broken with missing files. For whatever reason, the installer is not running with adequate privileges by default. If you right-click the installer and run as admin, it installs correctly. Never run into any privilege issues with other installers, or even previous versions of Avidemux. The devs may wanna fix the installer, which would prevent a lot of the frustrated user feedback they're receiving.

You run the installer, fine. Then you try to run the software and it errors. Asking for libs and missing dll files. With no guide as to where those files can be found. Yet older versions 2.7.0 work fine. How about TESTING the release?

Great piece of work, if the thing ever worked! Seriously it could solid piece of software, but my oh my full of coding bugs and never ending fixes. If only the developers would release a stable version and one which dies not cause bug regressions.

First of all, it's great piece of work. However there are some "soft spots" to be developed.
1. The VC++ version drops an error message right after star, missing something from the Visual C++ environment
2. It cries laud for a build-in and working batch processing function, because the 'avimux_jobs" is separate, far from convenient and does not work properly

I think finally something good happened. for two months I've been trying to find a program that can convert a movie with permanent subtitles hardcode on movie without losing the quality of the movie. has a little problem with he does not know how to decode them for this I have to use another editing subtitle program and convert them into .ssa with my favorite color and film position. the rest of the program manages to finish the job in a very short time. (I use playstation to watch movies)

The "VC" nightly works better for me

The truth is people complain about this because it is full of buggy code and never seems to work that well even in a stable version. It's a long standing joke even at Doom9 forum. Ask there what you think of this and most honestly would say the same. If it works for you then you are lucky!

I just edited a video, made a few dozen cuts, and when I went to save it the whole project disappeared. I must have misclicked the save, hit the "close" link next to it and lost everything. No ability to revert, no confirmation to save or clear, the entire video is simply gone. So if you like to risk the loss of hours of work just because you misclicked a few pixels, this is the software for you. But it mostly certainly is not the software for me.

Can't figure out all the complainers. They probably haven't built a thing in their lives! The author obviously cares about his/her creation and has spent much time working on fixes. Worked first time for me, splicing a section from a .TS file and saving it as an .MP4. Very slight lag in the speech lip movements in the saved file which is an improvement on a couple of commercial programs I've been trying. The fact that that this software comes free of charge is much appreciated. Well done!

32-bit 2.7.1 on XP does a decent job trimming and appending 540i mp4 segments from Hauppauge Rocket where Smart Cutter left gray stuff at each cut point. Single frame rewind doesn't work though and gives an error message.

Avidemux should have an automatic de-interlacing option for newbie. Use the Telecide Decomb (show) frames at the back of any sequence of filters to debug.

1.Broken frames at the beginning of the input file, select the broken frames from the beginning until you reach 00: 00: 00.000 and remove, ie up to the first key frame.
2.Out of place resizing filter, in avidemux it is necessary to be the first filter when using IVTC filters at least.
3.Incorrect Demux for the source, change the demux, MKV for a lossless first pass is a good choice for difficult files, solves many sync errors including audio.
4.Video saved incorrectly in copy mode, in copy mode it is necessary to cut into only key frames.
5.Audio desynchronized, predicted AAC (FDK) for lossless output and AAC (LAV) for the others.
Anyway if you use the right filters in the correct positions the video will have excellent quality and zero errors.
Notes: Try downloading again if it does not work correctly. Avidemux desktop shortcut and toolbar is not running at least on my 32bit W7, I'm having to open directly from the installation folder icon, hopefully this will be fixed because all my programs open in the desktop shortcut. On the bright side I still use version 2.6.21 all the time, I have very few complaints, and it almost never crashes. Even expensive pro software crashes sooner or later, so AVIDEMUX is actually very amazing, and I am grateful to those working on it!! Thanks!

The problem is you never know when this software is going to crash, usually with choice of muxer. Look at the bug fixes in the nightly compared to the 'stable.' Thats a laugh!
I won't use this again as it is too erratic. The xvid options also point to non compatibility of hardware and are confusing as I don't see some of these options even in the installer codec perse. The h264 options are okay to set up. Hit and miss as avidemux often crashes encoding a anything. Avoid!

Software in the normal version has been fixed many bugs, in the Nightly version if it gives error download again soon (bug of download). This software is not for beginners. Search more before using the filters. Many conversion errors are fixed by running demux on MKV in copy mode before actually converting to h264 MP4 for example.

My God man, why don't you just report directly to their forum instead of writing that mini epic down. Then again you'll be lucky to get a reply, so I understand your frustrations. This software is pretty noted for being bug ridden/unstable. Hi Everyone, Matt here. I downloaded the Avidemux 2.7.0 from the portableapps.com website. I have used for the last couple of day or so. I have been using a MP4 video file to remix the video with this software. Now what has happened is when I copy and paste to remix the video after a while it comes up with a long error. Hi Everyone, Matt here. I downloaded the Avidemux 2.7.0 from the portableapps.com website. I have used for the last couple of day or so. I have been using a MP4 video file to remix the video with this software. Now what has happened is when I copy and paste to remix the video after a while it comes up with a long error. I saw on another forum like this where someone said it has something to do with the frames of the video and you can re-edit how many frames you can cut,copy or paste on a video. My email is mattinblack01@gmail.com if anyone has any ideas how to solve this issue.

Here, here! The support for this via its forum is zero to pretty lifeless, as expected for newbies or those who report bugs or request a feature, because it is freeware and developers/contributors time could be volunteers or suchlike. I hate to denigrate, but avidemux is extremely 'bug ridden' for a program, always has been from day 1 of existence. This latest version 2.7 is so so stable most of the time and thats a small miracle but compare with its latest nightly version and it's staggering to see the bug fixes implemented. I won't use this again. Unimpressed.

My low overall score is because of the bugs. Just look at the fixes compared to the stable version. It's a complete joke to release a version so bug ridden and call it stable!

Great that it us free and developed, but their forum sucks big time. Go to Doom 9 or here at Video Help(the best) and loads of helpful people who put you straight. Over at avidemux you are lucky to get an answer even if you report a bug.

Pretty stable, a few bugs, the nightly shows a lot of corrections some minor,but nothing major over this 2.7.0 build. Would be nice to get a build which does not have persistent bugs found after the fact and this is a major criticism of avidemux build releases. Anyway great freeware.

I find all points here very valid. It is stable/buggy depending on your specific project, format. But what it is and does as freeware is comparable and exceeds those so called commercial editors which are bloated and too complicated, plus extremely pricey. The 2.7.x branch is stable, if I hit a problem I revert back to an older 2.5.6 portable. Also I think the bugs may sometimes be bugs within Windows which 'react' to avidemux or vice versa.
Another plus point is that are easy accessible filters for denoise or sharpening. My quibble is that I wouldlower the spatial settings at a high default as they are far too strong as in the really good HQ denoiser available in the filters. "Avidemux" is no less than excellent (if not among the very best — of its "kind" if you want), since it's EASY, PORTABLE and AUTONOMOUS, plus... FREE.
Plus, important points: able to and even set by default to stream copy (good!)
= (simple reminder to beginners) no recoding => no quality loss + very fast, although lossy compressed videos can only be cut on their key ("intra", labelled "I" by "Avidemux") frames, in stream "Copy" mode / double triangle blue buttons will find them key frames for you;
AND providing a no-more-than-what-you-need set of commands or menus / buttons. All that in one Win. 10 (64 & 32-bit) + XP + Linux + Macintosh compatible tool, being rather unique.
Some free editors sure are easy but may lack portability or any other of those qualities — when they don't come bundled with idiotware, while "Avidemux" comes with NO spy/malware whatsoever.

avidemux has improved of late I grant you that, but it does crash, no doubt there. Often the message in Windows using control alt delete shows 'this program is not responding' warning, then leaving it for a few minutes it starts encoding. Also if you decide to just (re)encode audio up, it gives a crazy output e.g mp3 you set in option prior, in an unrecognisable form so you have to go into Windows system options and add the extension .mp3 to your file so it is read properly. Also if you decide to just copy the video and output new audio it crashes in whatever container or muxer you use. This program is far from stable and to confirm it for myself I tested on xp, both 32/64 bit Win 7 as well and saw the same annoying bugs. Win 10 I never tested.

Did a couple of encodings today and encountered zero probs. I prefer the simplicity of leaving HandBrake's telecine & decomb options on auto all the time for deinterlacing tricky sources, but you can do it in Avidemux just as well. You have to make sure two filters are added to get the frame rate change. The quality of my encoding was visually better than the same I did with Handbrake yesterday, but I'll stick switch HandBrake's easier options for deinterlacing as they are auto.

It is very stable now. Long time coming! My only quibble is I wish they had implemented automatic detection of interlaced patterns like in the excellent AutoMKV or AutoGK, if the source DVD is pure interlaced or a hybrid etc. There are generous filters to do anything in Avidemux, I understand avisynth ports and the average user will know how to denoise or resize or autocrop, but deinterlacing is a much 'different kettle of fish' as they say and needs extra care or Joe Blogs will destroy his video source. Moreover if it is a DVD(interlaced) one should leave it as such and let the hardware doing the deinterlacing, but for streaming etc or transcoding to h264 auto detection of the correct patterns in the prior DVD analysis would be nice. I've seen many PAL R2 DVDs with hybrid patterns. AutoMKV does the best job of this I've ever seen in a tool. HDConverttoX its upgrade fails miserably in this respect of auto detection and the developer adds in the guide that it does not work. Also in avidemux the denoise section would benefit from a remove dirt/remove grain filter, the ones present cannot remove floating black dirt specks on unscanned DVD sources. Despite my moaning a little a great video editor, but only if you know what you are doing. Luckily I do.

I tested both 32 bit and 64 bit extensively today and they work flawlessly in Windows XP/7. This software has finally turned a corner regarding annoying bugs which to be fair was deserving of its fierce criticisms by users in the past, but not anymore as of build 2.7.0. The nightly build fixes very minor cropping issues/adds cropping features which most average users wouldn't notice anyway or need. Pleasing to have something positive to say about AviDemux at last!

All other software rendered my videos with 10 to 50 times larger size and hours of rendering depending the output format. But when I compared the quality of rendered video with the original clips frame by frame, they all degraded the quality of the original videos. This software is exactly what I wanted. It simply jointed my videos with the original format and quality in a second and it is free.

I had to knock off a few points because version 2.7 won't allow me to resize videos. Mediainfo shows it as a 2:3 video even though it was saved as a 16:9 video. Mediainfo also shows it used to be 16:9. Yes the configuration settings were changed every way I could think of, but still no go.
I also tried saving hevc x265 video, and it took over an hour to save a 10 minute video, normally takes 5 minutes in 2.6.21. The files size was only .001 mbit less than the same x264 mp4 video.
Needless to say I won't be using version 2.7 until the resize is fixed, and no x265, until I can see some advantage to it. I would post this on the avidemux forum but I don't have membership, and I don't have internet at home.
On the other hand I would give AVIDEMUX 2.6.21 all Stars, even if minor improvements might help. I use it for everything!

Well can't rate this version. I like using Portable x64 version. Since version "AviDemux 2.6.18 r170219 Nightly" other versions don't even run and give me Error Loading Message. I am assuming after version 2.6.18 the program is NO longer compatible with Vista version ... just a guess on my part. Thanks!

The amount of frequent bug fixes can be looked at in two ways, the program is in constant development or the code just isn't up to scratch. I prefer the latter description! I have never ever managed to complete an encoding on any Windows platform using this tool. The frequent updates to a stable build prove it has never been tested thoroughly before a 'final' stable build. That said the so called stable builds can crash too!

I’ve been testing the video conversion function of every new version of Avidemux for many years, and it has NEVER completed without something going wrong. It crashes (it’s amazingly unstable for an app that’s been around for so long), or it only converts part of the video, or on the rare occasion that it completes an encode it creates horrible looking video — it simply ALWAYS fails in some way. It’s got a lovely feature set, and I’m sure that some of its capabilities work, but since every new version fails to do a simple conversion (like .avi to H264), I always end up chucking it in the trash. And I know it’s not my fault because I’m quite adept with every other multimedia utility I use (I’m even pretty good with ffmpeg via the command line).
This time it failed by only completing around 20% of an AVC to HEVC conversion with audio passthru — without giving any indication that it failed to complete the other 80%. Both iFFmpeg (commercial, but very cheap) and Handbrake (free) converted the same video file with aplomb.
Running macOS 10.12.5 on a 2.8 GHz Core i7 MacBook Pro.
This time it failed by only completing around 20% of an AVC to HEVC conversion with audio passthru — without giving any indication that it failed to complete the other 80%. Both iFFmpeg (commercial, but very cheap) and Handbrake (free) converted the same video file with aplomb.

I was using 2.6.17 for a while and today after windows insider update I've got the audio sync bug too... I was so damn pissed, but upgrade to 2.7.0 fixed it. Best app EVER.

Having switched from VDub to this after I saw that VDub doesn't support mkv/mp4, there was no looking back.
But with latest version, the developer has made an ingenious change to move the marker keys to something plainly unusable.
What used to be a very handy one-key solution is now a 3-key solution for each darn marker.
While I like this new version with improved zooming, I am forced to go back to a decades old version to get back my marker keys :(
Would gladly rate the old software in the 9s.

Not trying to sound like an ass but when the developers of the program don't do something, we have to share the valuable info. I was just having crash after crash using the more recent version of avidemux, then I switched back to v2.5.5 (because it was the most downloaded of the old versions on sourceforge), and now I finally can convert my h264 video again without crashes and without weird artifacts on screen. I don't know what they tried to do with version 2.6.x but it's clearly not working.
To everybody out there, I strongly recommend using avidemux version 2.5.5 .

I had stayed away from this application for a while due mainly to audio sync problems. I had started using Video to Video which does the job very well so far as my requirements go. Unfortunately it has not been updated to decode x265 codec.
Recently I came across an x265 video that had a lot of useless real estate like a wall paper and the actual video content was limited to central portion. It was very irritating to watch. So remembering Avidemux's past capability of cropping the video I decided to look for the the latest version and see if it would help.
I was pleasantly surprised. I was able to decode the x265 codec, crop out the wasted area, use msharpen filter, increase the volume level by 2.0 db, and encode with x264 codec required for my 6 year old PhantomTek media player. The result in my opinion was excellent.
What I would really like to see added to the GUI is capability or minimising it to tray while the process is going on AND ability to easily set defaults upon startup. If these twi features are added I would rate it 10. Another thing I observed is that the sometimes the tray icon stops updating the progress % when hovering with mouse. This might be due to Windows behaviour, I am not sure. Overall an excellent application. BTW it is much faster, too.

Just like the beta releases of 2.6.11 (64 bit), the final release also has a problem not installing required .DLL files and won't run. Going back to 2.6.8.

Love the program but the last two betas (possibly more) are broken on Windows with error: The program can't start because Qt5OpenGL.dll is missing from your computer. Would have posted this on their forum but registration is not open. Stupid.

I have been using this program for almost five years now .I have no major issues with this program except mpeg 2 to mp4 encoding & lower audio encoging bitrates apart from 56kbps .Right i am using avidemux 2.6.8 ,I upgraded to 2.6.10 ,but had a few bugs like when you save your file it will not recall or remember where you opened the file .And as i mentioned from the begining about the mpeg 2 to mp4 encoding .Keep up the good work .

The program does not trim video as required: One can either get it to cut once only [A] or at point [B] not at 2 points for a controled cut? Therefore I can only assume its got a serious bug. I got the download link from your server, and I was using the 64bit version for win8.1 I strongly recommend to warn all users, i'm going to uninstall it because the app's failure is too serious for effective use.

It would be a boost to the user's confidence if the installer stated the version number correctly. It still has 2.6.8, when in fact it is 2.6.9. Still and all, an excellent tool with a mind-bending array of settings, some of which cause problems when you hit the save button.

When it comes to video editing softs -- even the light duty ones -- I remain something of a clumsy neophyte, so take that into consideration re my numerical ratings. This comment is to note that (as best I can determine) AVIdemux 2.6.1 was the last to be offered in a portable version. And that is a terrible pity. @kodec (Comments post #4) -- No, I don't think you are missing anything. It appears to me that some important functionality has indeed been stripped away from this program over time, and that is not a good thing either. Format options and other things that used to be there are no longer. So I'm going to hang onto the 2.5.x and 2.6.x portable versions. I'd rather have a program that (sort of) worked sometimes, under the right conditions, than a tool that kept on under development but was hobbled.

I found that for cutting Xvid/Divx avi's you best use 2.5.6 (which I do) and for cutting x264 MKV/MP4's 2.6.X is best suited. 2.6.X indeed crashes a lot on avi's.

No other program can do lossless editing on so many different containers anbd codecs like this app can. My only wish would be to include wmv / asf support as i still have to use the old asfbinmaster for that.

Have been using freemake's video converter for mp4->flv. While the video quality was good (except for the initial video frames which was very chunky)I just used the latest avidemux for the same purpose - the quality is noticeably better - especially wrt initial frames.

No improvement re med-large mkv and audio sync issues. Interface has changed, plugins like blur relocated. Still a good free editor for avi. 3 hrs to encode 500mb mkv file w/filters on 4g win7.

I like working with Avidemux but for trimming video there are multiple problems. Cut MKV files sometimes have audio out of sync or have video but no audio. Cut FLV files work OK with some players but with others the video is speeded up or won't play at all. Version 2.6.0 is more reliable than previous versions but still needs work. If I have trouble with AVIDEMUX I try FREE VIDEO DUB for cutting and that usually works OK.

For years I have been using another program for converting my DVDs into DivX files, and I keep the original AC3 audio stream for surround sound. But my brother ran into a snag recently - in trying to add one of the videos to his Zune, its software rejected the video every time. Turns out his Zune doesn't like AC3 audio - probably because his Zune is a dinosaur. I didn't want to have to re-encode the whole thing from scratch, so I immediately thought of this program. Using avidemux I was able to keep the DivX video stream, and convert the audio from AC3 to MP3. The whole process took only 20 minutes for a 2-hour movie, where redoing it from the start would have taken over 2 hours, not counting the time it would have taken to re-rip the DVD.
Just downloaded version 2.5.6 and looking forward to trying it out.

I wanted to rip the audio from an MP4 video with AAC audio. I marked my regions, but having to stop the preview to mark them was inconvenient. Then saved the audio with the ‘copy’ option, which didn’t seem to produce valid audio output and neither did the ‘PCM’ option (I assumed that it was exporting WAV format). Fortunately, I am an easy guy to please so the MP3 format which does work was good enough for me!

Monkeypack's comment leaves me a bit confused. First of all, the x86 ("32 bit" )version of Avidemux - as is almost always true - will run without issue on x86-64 platforms. I've run it on both Vista 64 and Windows 7 64 without issue. Avidemux does not depend on external libraries; the installer packs everything you need (though you can of course install Avisynth as well if you want to use the AVS Proxy with or without the AVSProxy GUI). A failure to install where others have had success using an identical installer (such as the numerous people who use each installer put together by Lord_Mulder or others) typically indicates a problem with one's own PC. It is of course possible that you either had an improperly compiled installer or (more likely, and fairly common) that some interruption in your internet connection truncated your download of the installer.
If a fresh download of the installer (SVN latest, please) from Lord_Mulder's site or Razorbyte's site doesn't resolve this issue, suspect something with your own PC.
As far as "Rumored to be super fast", Avidemux is as fast as the decoding and encoding libraries it uses and the options you select as far as encode complexity. Any speed advantage otherwise derived by Avidemux probably points to poor coding by developers on other GUI projects.

But nothing happened when I tried to start the conversion -- quickly I realized I needed 64 bit version. So I uninstalled 32bit and installed 64bit version. It goes all the way through to the last step of installation, when it's supposed to launch, and it crashes. I tried re-installing several times and always crashed. Looked around for help on this issue and couldn't find it. Seems like if you can get it to work for you, it's a good tool. This software is the Best. I use it to create DVD from DVR recorded programs. I also use it to fix screen ratio problem. I am using version 2.5.2 because the codecs in the new version don't work with the software I have, Pinnacle Studio 12, and DVDLab Pro 2.0 otherwise I would upgrade (tried but had many issues). So everyone is complaining about AV sync issues, well guess what it is not AVIDEMUX causing the issue. If you don't believe me then that is for you to research, because I have researched it. I found this out most computer CPU's over 1.5 Ghz can handle audio and video with very limited issues, if the codec is present the software player finds the codec it decodes and plays that simple. But when edit there is a piece that is put into the mix that we don't see or even think about. You see the Audio and Video when recorded has AV sync issues already, they are just masked by the decoder and sound driver and HW layer. Now as you increase the CPU speed you also increase the bus speed. This in turn also increases the interface card bus frequency. Thus a unnoticeable AV sync now become more noticeable. Using Encoding and Decoding software only further increases the problem. So the solution. You see audio is in terms frequency base and shifting or adjusting any frequency when dealing with audio cans induce harmonics that we cannot detect or even realize that they are there. And when coupled to video which has a high frequency can also cause this inducing factor. Okay so you are wondering what the solution is right?
Okay here it is.

Avidemux is an excellent program but it has some issues with A/V sync.
Regarding the A/V sync issues with MPG/VOB files, try this trick: first load one of these files on VirtualDub then go to File > File Information and check the Skew value. Usually it's a negative number (like -510 ms). Open the same file on Avidemux and input this number on Shift inputbox, before saving the file.
It worked for some files.

I revisit this program every so often to see if it's problems have been fixed. My basic requirement is to be able to trim video segments out of larger .mpeg files captured from other sources. The files play just fine on VLC. However, in almost every case, even the smallest edits in Avidemux introduce audio sync problems. It has many other features I would like to use. Unfortunately, if you can't edit a file without losing sync, the entire application is useless.

I had major issues with audio and subtitle sync. It was delayed by anywhere from 2 to 4 seconds. Had to revert back to version 2.5.3 which worked flawlessly. This had a different problem. A number of H/X264 rips with compressed headers would appear as simply green screen. I then switched to Handbrake which had its own problems with sharpness. Finally I worked out a flowchart for getting the exactly what I wanted as a final result.
What I need in my final result was 2000 kbps XVid Mpeg4 ASP, 720p resolution, sufficiently loud AC3 5.1 audio and SRT subtitles. This would make the final file of decent size 2000 to 2200 mb, compatible with all standalone players and playable on Atom powered netbooks also.
First of all I reverted to version 2.5.3. If the audio was DTS I would convert to AC3 using freeware SPG Audio Converter selecting AC3 and "Very High" as the format and quality setting. Inspect the file with MediaInfo to check if it had header stripping audio or video heders. If is was such then remux using mkvmerge 4.4 with the header compression set to off. Extract the subtitles. Rip the newly created mkv file through Avidemux 2.5.3 with my required settings + msharpen filter at default settings and external AC3 (512 kbps created by SPG audio converter) file as the audio source. Depending on the volume level of the AC3 file I would select DRC and gain between 3 and 5. Select mkv as the container and save. I always say NO to the H/X264 message that pops up when avidemux scans the input file.
I then run the resulting file through mkvmerge, add the previously extracted srt subtitles file and necessary comments to the track and global options. Then I am done.
Till today I was not aware that the compressed header was the problem for the green screen. Now that I know it has solved all my problems. It is slow but then I run 2 instances of avidemux simultaneously - my PC can handle it. CPU utilization does not exceed 70%.
I am from photographic field where every hair and pore on the face counts. The final result is a whole lot more than good enough. Handbrake does not come even close in quality!
Finally I have just downloaded the version 2.5.5 and will try it out tonight. I hope the sync problem from 2.5.4 has been taken care of.

excellent program! probably my used tool on my laptop, use it to cut out ads, shorten length of vids of .flv, .mp4, avi mpeg2 etc before putting them on my ipod. very fast and easy to use. only problem i had was originaly i didnt know how to export properly, but worked out when saving finished video you have to type the file type after the video name ie foo fighters live.flv love it!

I use this program for three purposes: to quickly change from one container to another (say avi to mp4) without recoding, adding multiple videos into one long file, or to use its crop feature to measure how much I need to trim off the edges of a video to eliminate the black bars.
I'd use it for much more, but every file I encode, regardless of the starting format, seems to have issues. Some videos (even just copied) have sync issues, while others have stutter issues with a pause every few seconds in the video. Its sad, because I really do find it easy to use.

One of the few editors that can work with .MOV files.
Good and fast - for my .MOV files it always warns about using B-frames - so there is some problem playing the actual video (stuttering)- but I can go to time and (it automatically jumps to the nearest key or intra-frame) to trim edit .MOV files - the resultant edited videos are fine.
Saving is still a bit of a mystery for me - I just save to .MP4 - which is the same internal format as my original .MOV - as I understand just a different container - then the saving is very fast in seconds - which shows AviDemux doesn't have to re-encode the video to save. I can't see how to save back to .MOV - but I can always convert back from MP4 to MOV - if necessary - using something like Quick Media Converter.

Ive weaned myself off Virtualdub and TMPEGEnc with this great free bit of software, but it helps to know your way around digital video generally ! It does pretty much anything I want it to, mostly hard coding subtitles, raising sound levels, and converting avi to DVD. It supports vbr mp3 audio without any sync issues I tended to get with VDub. It will do framerate conversions without a problem.
My top tips:
1 - To get all the required info about a movie file, open it in Avidemux and click the Gear symbol that sits on the toolbar between Save and Calculator
2 - To do a quick and dirty conversion to dvd, open the avi/mkv file, then click Auto -> DVD. Then click Calculator, select MPEG, select your target disc size (ie DVD5), click apply and close. Then click save, give it a name foo.mpg always works for me !!

Great tool for encoding your DV.avi-Files to MPEG-2.mpg-Files without any AV-sync issues. These created MPG-Files can be used to create a DVD with GUI for dvdauthor.
There is the possibility to delete/edit the MP4-tag of MP4-Files created with Avidemux: Open your MP4-File in Mp3tag and delete/edit the information in the File. Test it and be happy with this software.

I love Avidemux but it's mp4 (h264) editing capability is limited. It can cut only at I frames (start & end) and I too had audio sync issues. For mp4 i would rather use cut assistant as gui for mp4box.

I have no problem editing MP4 files containing AVC/H264 video without having sync problems. To encode, I use Handbrake or Staxrip. For editing, I use AviDemux, which works fine.

I've commented on v. 2.4. This comment is specific to all the 2.5 builds I've tried. If you wish to use this tool to quickly convert video to .avi output using xvid codec one-pass bitrate, stick with v. 2.4. With all the 2.5 builds I've tried the output looks as if a semi-transparent checkerboard was placed over the frame. The output is not watchable. I've pointed this out on AviDemux forum and the response amounts to "use 2 pass" whereas in v. 2.4 single pass bitrate 1500 with highest motion detection(6) produces very good output from many sources. It seems there's no interest in even finding out this is a problem, never mind a fix.
If you use xvid one-pass mode, either use v. 2.4 or wait for 2.6.

Lots of options and great AUTO modes, the only drawback I could find is that the Stored/Compressed Aspect Ratio cannot be set to be different from the Playback Aspect Ratio.

It's title is AVIDEMUX, yet there is no obvious way to demux AVIs with it... You can convert, but not demux. How about a little truth to the name, and put a simple "demux" button on it that pulls each stream out of the avi, without recoding?

Right on the Avidemux2's website is a great big link that says Wiki docs. Click that and what do you see but more links in the Wiki--one of which is "Tutorials & Guides."

After a year of struggling with this program, I find myself avoiding it, when I really would like to use it. In theory, it is an outstanding video editor. Unfortunately, I frequently find that after editing a file that plays fine on either Windows Media Player or VLC (for example), when I edit the file with this, the resulting new file has totally lost audio synchronization.
As I understand it, some MPEG input files have anomalies in them which do not conform strictly to the MPEG specifications. But for some reason, players like VLC seem to be able to play those files in sync, but Avidemux can't edit them in sync. Lately, I've been running into similar problems with MP4 edits: Avidemux complains about some anomalies in the original MP4 file, and when I get done extracting commercials from the video stream, the saved file is hopelessly out of sync.
Since somebody at VLC knows how to overcome these synchronization anomalies, I wonder why Avidemux team doesn't just grab that code and add it in as an optional tool. I would say that providing some tools to clean up the audio would push my rating from a 5 to a 9. As it is, I'm reluctant to use the program because I can never be sure what I'm going to get out the other end, after the sometimes very lengthy conversion processes.

I find Avidemux a very good tool which gives damn good results, its functionality was quite difficult to me as a newbie but I have become much more familiar with it as I use it more. I have done DVD to .avi conversions and H264 to .avi conversions (for play on my stand alone dvd player) and both conversions resulted in VERY GOOD results. Its filters make this tool outstanding. I thanks the people here at Videohelp.com for recommending it to me.

What an incredible software! I've downloaded this software many time, installed it and immediately uninstalled it. One day I read a review by an avid user and noted how highly it was rated. One advise, read the manual before use and I follow that simple wisdom to read the manual. I have nothing but good things to say about this editor, encoder plus software. You guys are brilliant. It also has filters so that you can auto crop video or burn in idx/sub subtitles. Also as of v. 2.4.3 they've fixed it so that running multiple instances on a multi-core PC doesn't crash.

I tried it a few versions ago, and maybe didn't understand it, but it didn't seem to work for me. Recently heard it had been upgraded to Avidemux 2.4.2 (r4195) and tried it again. Removed 55 minutes of commercials from a 3 hour MPEG2 TV recording and it worked like a champ.

I found this tool very easy to use for AVI editing and very fast. I had no trouble using any of its functions without having to check any online documentation. The only 'problem' I noticed with the interface was that not all features had tool tips but most items were self-explanatory anyway.
Did I mention it was fast? It took me less than 5 minutes to edit my video and save the newly edited version. I took 3hrs 5 min of raw video down to 1hr 53 minutes making about 30 edits and no re-encoding. Fast. Faster than when I used VirtualDub the last time I edited my home movies!

How could someone give a "Value for money 1 of 10" for a FREE software?! Avidemux is my favorite video cutter and editor, for more than a year now. This tool is really good for cutting and convert, and even has filters and transitions. Maybe not the simplest for the beginners, but this is not a reason to give to this software a little overall score. Imho, at least.

I believe the people who say it's a great tool...but I am new to vid editors, and really need a "how to" section. None in the "Help" of the software, and in my ignorance could not find it on this site either.
So I also agree with the comment of "not intuitive". Will keep looking for a simple way to convert avi to mpeg...but hope to progress enough to come back and take advantage of this apparently good product (if you have a bit of prequisite editing knowledge).

The comment about not being able to access network files is false... if you use the QT version is uses standard windows dialog... the GTK version can only access a network share connected as a drive letter but not as a UNC name. Being that this was written for the linux environment first.. I think its a great app.. I have started using it more now than making custom batch files and avs scripts.

For linux this is a very useful piece of software. While it is often touted as a virtualdub clone for linux it does have some features that differ. It handles vbr mp3 audio like a champ and can output ac3 audio which is nice. While I have not used the windows version I know that it does compliment virtual dub (which I do use when booted into windows) very well. For linux it's almost a necessary piece of software for your video toolbox!

AviDemux alledgedly can do a lot, but using it can be quite the pain in the rear. It doesn't hold a candle to the VirtualDub family of tools. AviDemux would improve a lot if Avery Lee would work on its GUI and interface. In its current state it's not very intuitive, naming conventions for its functions are weird and uncommon, and even experienced users will bump into some aggrivation, or simply get mad working with it, because it shows a blue video-image while it should be red and many little things like that. It's clearly not supported and tested much by and for Windows usage.
AviDemux is the anti "Video for Windows" cornerstone, and it shows. The problem is its creators/developers don't want to admit to the reality that true Windows 2K/XP/2K3 User-Interfaces are easier and faster to work with. Ignore Trend's false positive - this file is clean. AVI Demux is mature, robust tool that is a perfect partner to virtualdub. It is great for joining videos, handles VBR MP3 audio, has a strong range of built-in filters, and runs under Vista (!!??!). It isn't the prettiest kid on the block, and it's linux lineage is still very apparent (No file extension is added, for example), but it should be in every video toolkit.

Does exactly what is claimed. Has worked perfect for me. Someone mentioned a possible virus. Sometimes anti-virus software gives a false positive which is a problem with the anti-virus software not the program being scanned. The program works great for me and I could not find any indication of a virus.

Downloaded the latest version 2.4.1 and tried to run it... the latest Trend 2008 antivirus program stopped it dead with "attempted library injection" pop up message something about attempting to mark a DLL as to be loaded by some or all subsequent programs. Didn't trust it enough to have another go.

I think I just found a replacement for VirtualDub MPEG.
It doesn't need replacing IMO...but AVIDemux deals with
that freaking annoying VBR audio with the greatest of ease.

A really useful program that has the functionality of several other programs, thank You authors!
The quality of the encoded results well exceed my expectations, and the tools (such as 'save audio') and video editing functions make it a great package.
I also rate this as the best free program of this kind around, and think it's overall better than Virtualdub - it does the same tasks equally well, and can do more than it.

Easiest to use encoder. The gui is great for editing and adjusting audio sync, but can still be improved.
Job Saving needs improvement, but uses javascript files for jobs (and profiles), that can be easily edited.
Handles VBR in avi extremely well. DVD to avi worked fine, for the one file I did.
Doesn't crash as much as VirtualDubMod.
I like this program.

Tried it recently to check the performance. Tried the earlier version as well as the latest version. Converted a Xvid to DVD compliant mpg2, with direct audio stream copy and also by converting original ac3 audiostream to mp2. Xvid had 2Ch 48KHz 192kbps audio, 2.35 aspect ratio for the video, total file length about 700MB.
The video quality is good (the program selected FFMPEG for conversion). However, the audio was never in sync, it is getting squeezed in time so that the gap between audio and video kept on increasing progressively to someting like 10 secs for a 1:13:00 source. The Xvid audio/video was in perfect sync.
For comparison, tried the demo of DVDSanta4 - it produced VOBs which had perfect sync between the video/audio throughout the duration of 1:13:00

Very easy to use and install. No confusion on which package to download. Works well with avi, haven't tested with anything else. It can even work with avis that have VBR encoded MP3 streams. IMO it's better than vdub.

Just wanted a free tool that was able to join Xvid clips together since I now have a DVD player that can play those files. The programme works perfectly, even with variable audio!!!! I know that it can encode into .mpg, but that is what Tmpegenc is for. Excellent piece of software!!! Congrats to the maker!!!

an alternitive to virtualdub , though with windows , you could just stay with v-dub for some of the fuctions.
Easier to use for some people ..

Great little piece of software here. I tried converting some DiVX files I had on my windows hardrive over to a DVD MPEG file and it did great! With just a couple of clicks I had an excellent quality MPEG-2 Video with AC3 sound. Well worth the seven libraries I had to download and install to use it!
