NEW VERSION 2.6.0 / 2.6.1 Alpha

AviSynth is a powerful tool for video post-production. It provides ways of editing and processing videos. AviSynth works as a frameserver, providing instant editing without the need for temporary files. AviSynth itself does not provide a graphical user interface (GUI), but instead relies on a script system that allows advanced non-linear editing. While this may at first seem tedious and unintuitive, it is remarkably powerful and is a very good way to manage projects in a precise, consistent, and reproducible manner. Make scripts with AvsPMod, it is a text editor for AviSynth.

Version history / Release notes / Changelog

Interim Avisynth 2.6.1 alpha release.
=====================================
This release is intended to be near feature identical to 2.6.0

There are currently 3 build versions, all should be bug identical.

These versions do not include the local help files so as to speed
the fast swapping between versions by over installing the required
version. The 2.6.0 local help is still current.

The alpha installers do not provide installation of runtime components.
The user must download the relevant packages from Microsoft and install
them.

All versions now ship with DevIL 1.7.8, which needs VC 2K5 runtimes.
DevIL.dll is now delay loaded, so Avisynth.dll can be used without
it, in which case ImageReader/Writer would support only ebmp mode.
AviSynth_20160517_VC6.exe
Uses the systems MSVCRT.dll only.
There is no longer any dependance on msvcp60.dll
Requires a processor supporting MMX instruction set.

AviSynth_20160517_VC2005Exp.exe
Needs the VC 2K5 runtimes.
Requires a processor supporting MMX instruction set.

AviSynth_20160517_VC2008Exp SSE2.exe
Needs the VC 2K8 runtimes.
Requires a processor supporting SSE2 instruction set.
Users encountering problems should compare the behaviour of each version
and also the official 2.6.0 version. Different behaviour between 2.6.0 and
2.6.1VC6 are likely to be coding errors. Different behaviour between the
VC6 and 2K5 or 2K8 version are probably caused be incompatibilities in the
development environments.

During development most incompatibilities have shown up in the error
reporting and the error handling. The VC 2015 Community build environment
version currently fails the acceptance tests and has been withdrawn from
this release.

As you make mistakes writing your Avisynth scripts please ensure the error
messages are appropriate and the line number and column counter are consistant.
Erroneous scripts that cause inconsistant error reporting gratefully accepted.

Another vote here for AvsPmod... it's a really useful tool to use with Avisynth scripts.

I not sure those folk who criticise Avisynth for its lack of GUI really get the point. AviSynth a collection of very powerful tools which have been written - for the most part - by technical people, who are not primarily concerned with the presentation of how to use those tools.
If you prefer to edit your video using a nice comprehensive GUI, there are plenty of alternatives out there...I don't think those involved with AviSynth development are really interested in that world though...

I honestly don't know why would anyone make a script engine without a gui. Just imagine how awesome it would be to use this powerful tool with toolbars, and menus, and long list of options! You know, all those things other programs have! And instead one has to browse a craptonne of tutorials to get the simplest things right.

Not liking it, but maybe someone will make it useful one day.

Tiny < 5MB and the most powerful on the planet.
It offers much more features than any professional software of 3+ GB can offer.

Ease of Use scored to 3 coz not newbie friendly, Newbie need a nice learning-ride to AVISynth Scripting Language. Best combo for Newbies might be VD or VDMod (sadly frozen project) plus MPC.
Overall scored to 10 because of unique features for absolutely FREE.

Sincere Bunch of THANKS to those who are devoted in the Developments.
Keep The GooD show RuNNinG.

This is the ONLY free non linear video editor that you'll EVER need. Nothing else compares to Avisynth simply for the fact that there are hundreds of third party filters that will suit your need. It can do anything you want, provided that you have the approriate plugins annd filters, from denoising to deinterlacing and etc. What sets Avisynth apart from other softwares is that it is completely script base; this makes the learning curve much more difficult compared to other video editors. If you are not satisfied with the repertoir of filters available to you, you can even create your own via the scripting language or by plugins. I gave the ease of use a 5 because of the learning curve and the fact that you have to spend extensive amount of time searching and testing external filters that you'll like.

Does almost anything but the documentation is hard to understand quickly even if you have programing experience. The documentation of variable usage was a short summary for example. Also the external plugins are somewhat hard to used with some of the commands requiring you to load a plugin that throws errors that avisynth can't give useful error or dug information for. With the addition of one of the text editors designed for avs scripts its quite easy to use.

Wow Hydra, that video link shows, in ways that words can't describe, how effective Avisynth is. It's a required plugin to many video processors/encoders like DVDRebuilder etc. Often you don't have to do anything, it works more or less in the background. Great stuff.

Avisynth is one of the most powerful and useful tools out there. This is best for all folks who prefer total control over their editing using scripting. There are so many filters that are available and can be used. There are still areas where this can be improved more. There are GUIs like AVSP and AVSEdit, but a GUI which helps editing and scripting would be the ultimate.

It looks like a very powerful tool an I believe all the experts here can't be wrong when they say so. But for a simpleton like me, it is a time consuming and frustrating experience trying to use its functionality. I wish it was as simple as virtualdub to use. But then this is not a pwrfect world.

Agreed, it's way over his/her head - a lazy person who didn't value powerful tools or the end results. I have been using Avisynth successfully for YEARS to do really nice/hard jobs by applying filters to video in various ways - eg to SUBSTANTIALLY cleanup home video, or VHS captures, or 8mm captures. This is truly a GIANT amongst tools (albeit it works with the help of lots of free 3rd party filters... head on over to doom9 to see it discussed in alive forums). No other free tool comes even close to its versatility and sheer power to adjust video content. So many free actively-developed filters to choose from ! Use a stable released version, though, eg 2.5.7(MT).

Avisynth enables you to do things with video which you wouldn't believe. This example gives you some idea of what type of video cleanup is possible http://www.vimeo.com/2823934

Although, it is not a tool to go into without a willingness to learn and "have a go". Even I could pick up the scipting with the plentiful examples available and the fantastic help available via "pros" always willing to lend advice and assistance on the forums. I would be totally lost without this truly magnificent free tool. Crikey, it's a keeper.

Yeah, you're right Peterbuilt, 'nuff said. It's way over your head anyway. After all, you spend most of your time cruising the forums thread crapping and saying stupid shit. Very productive.

Avisynth is a staple in many video editing softwares. Many couldn't function without it.

Incredible results. The Denoisers, Sharpeners, Macro Block Deblockers are the best. If you want truly superior looking final material, this is the app.

Don't be daunted by the scripting. You can start by copying other scripts and slowly making modifications to suit your needs.

This is the ultimate solution for video processing - nothing , no matter how much it costs, will beat AviSynth!

There is kind of a steep learning curve is it's all script-based, but you'll get the hang of it eventually, and if you've done any programming (especially C) it won't be as bad.

There's an astronomical amount of filters made for it, and the best part is everything's free!

I use it with VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod for testing, previewing and Huffyuv/MJPEG encoding, and XviD and QuEnc (a great free MPEG encoder) for encoding.

Very powerful tool, with good built in filters and some great 3rd party plugins available. Serving to CCE is working without any problem. Certainly not for beginners, since you have to do some scripting, but it's functionality is almost infinite. It's also pretty fast, faster than serving from VirtualDub.

I use it to filter multiple captured avis from analogue sources, and encoding them over night via CCE without those huge temp files, and it has always produced superb results. And: it's free!

Amazingly powerful tool... I haven't touch on even 1% of its functionality yet. Even if you don't know much, you can do a whole lot with quite a small amount of knowledge.

The learning curve is not trivial though, so you'll have to start working with it regularly to really delve into its power.

Posted by . Tool version 2.5 using OS Win2K
Ease of use 3 of 10 Functionality 10 of 10 Value for money 10 of 10 Overall score 9 of 10

I give this a 9 for Ease of Use because it is challenging, but once you get the hang of it, you're all set! The functionality is superb, 1 for Money Value since it is free and should always be kept that way. I absolutely love the possibilities and nearly unlimited and varying functions this application's post-processing can provide for any video. The forums of this program are visited daily by very helpful and informative users who know what they are talking about because it takes a lot more than a few clicks of the mouse to actually use AviSynth, and keystrokes at that, not so many mouse clicks. Anyway, I have been reading the forums, experimenting with various filters to enhance my DV sources and am astounded that I can open a home video in Media Player Classic and have it look much better than source video by simply typing up a text file! I was a newbie at this two weeks ago and thought it was more than I could ever handle, but surprisingly, it really isn't that hard. If I can do this, ANYONE can. For quality freaks like myself, if you want just the right pitch to the appearance of your video and efficient encoding resulting in well calculated filesizes, use AviSynth and its associated applications via DebugMode's FrameServing. Works in conjunction with VirtualDub also. One of the most unique things about AviSynth is its respect towards minimizing colorspace conversions, which preserves much detail! QuEnc encodes your AviSynth scripts as MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. Frameserve into Adobe products and frameserve out of them into the most efficient encoders like TMPGEnc and others! You will never regret learning the ways of advanced video production.

Cant believe this util has only 1 comment!!! If you are using virtualdub and have hit the ceiling on what it can do, then it is time to step up to avisynth. This is a rather recent discovery for me, as I refused to use it because it dies not have a GUI like virtualdub. Using the forums at doom9.org, asking numerous questions and doing small test with the scripts and using virtualdub/virtualdubMod as my psuedo-GUI, I have not looked back, since. Filters are much better than virtualdub and the community of filter development and research is vibrant and dynamic. Use it now for bad VHS, TV caps, DVD rips to DVD/DivX/XviD/WMV. No comparison. There is a learning curve, but once you get past the early frustrations of writing your scripts, you are home free.

Version 2.5.5 works for me using Winn98SE, Win2K, WinXP.

The ultimate video processing tool. Powerful is an understatement; it is only limited by your imagination and programming ability. Can do virtually anything to virtually any video source with the right code & plugins. Great for rescaling, deinterlacing, denoising, enhancing, frame rate conversions, and the list goes on forever. Not for the technically challenged but with a little learning curve (or astute script searching) you are off & running.
