How to normalize volume level in avi files with mp3 audio streams

Frequently we come upon avi files with sound whose volume diverges from the usual norm. Either it is too strong in which case our speakers choke up or it is too faint, forcing us to constantly adjust the volume in the software layer/speakers/Hi-Fi stereo, especially when playing episodes of our favorite series from a playlist. In some extreme cases, an error in the original compression process means that even if we raise the volume to 100% there is nothing reasonably audible. Fortunately this can be easily rectified, as long as the audio stream in the avi has been compressed with an MP3 codec.

Extract audio to WAV using VirtualDubMod

There's guides around for using VirtualDub (and most of its variants) for this task, but VirtualDubMod goes about things slightly differently with its "Stream List" - hence the need for this guide. It also gives you the ability to add the extractions to the Job Control (batch processing), whereas AFAIK the other variants do not.

Put a custom watermark on your video

This guide will enable you to place a watermark / logo / text over an existing video. This watermark can be text, or an existing image. You will have to re-encode your video, so it is suggested that you would use this guide immediately after acquiring your source, just before you are about to re-encode your output.

How to convert matroska MKV to AVI or OGM to AVI

Matroska .MKV file and .OGM are new container formats similiar to .AVI. They can contain DivX, Xvid video, OGG audio, several audio tracks, switchable subtitles. But if you want it to play it on a standalone dvd player with divx/xvid support you must convert it to AVI with MP3 audio and text subtitles(if any). No reencoding of the video is required, the audio will be reencoded to mp3.
