Creating MP4 files - ISO compliant MPEG-4 streams with AAC audio By now, many DVD players are capable of playing MPEG-4 video. The support usually only extends to the AVI container, but Nero is trying to push their NeroDigital technology into the market - and NeroDigital uses the full feature set that the MPEG-4 technology can offer: video, audio and the container. HC Guide What does HC stand for? I guess Hank's mpeg-2 enCoder would fit since the author goes by the name of Hank. Either way, HC has quickly developed into a very interesting alternative to expensive MPEG-2 encoders like CCE SP. I leave it up to you to decide which one is better, but you can certainly not beat the pricetag - and many applications using MPEG-2 encoders have been quick to support HC as well. doom9 Codec shoot-out 2004 It has been a full year since I last looked at a handful of video codecs and how they are suited for typical DVD backup scenarios. We've seen a lot of activity in the codec market in 2004: For one, there are now several H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC (referred to as AVC henceforth) encoders available. With the adoption of AVC as codec for the upcoming high definition DVD formats (be it Blu-ray or HD DVD), as well as its adoption into digital TV standards, I expect to see a lot of movement in that market in the years to come. Microsoft's WMV9 has also been approved for the upcoming high definition DVD formats, and Microsoft is making some inroads into the television business as well, but so far those are proprietary systems and tied to specific geographical areas. doom9 ProjectX guide In digital TV, the picture is compressed using the well-known MPEG-2 format, before being broadcast as digital data stream (MPEG2 transport stream - MPEG-2 TS). MPEG-2 transport streams are part of the MPEG-2 standard, but most tools cannot directly handle transport streams as its structure is different from MPEG-2 elementary streams we use on DVDs or SVCDs. This is where ProjectX enters the picture.
