How to convert TV Series DVD episodes to DivX/XviD with ease using freeware

Comprehensive, easy to follow guide, complete with screenshots, which takes you through the process of converting individual episodes from a TV Series DVD into DivX/XviD (so one episode per DivX/XviD file) using the freeware tools "AutoGK" and "DVD Decrypter". The guide focuses on DVD > XviD conversion, however, it is easy to change a simple setting within AutoGK that will convert the video to DivX instead (this option is mentioned in the guide).

doom9 AutoGK guide

Welcome to a new generation of MPEG-4 encoding utilities! Forget the times where you had to learn about resolutions and bitrates, worry about finding a suitable splitting point, perform compressibility tests and adjust resolutions accordingly, bother with interlaced and progressive content, etc.

doom9 DVD to XviD using Gordian Knot

XviD is the latest MPEG-4 codec and the first true open source one. Once finished it will be released under the GPL license. In a recent codec comparison I found that XviD gives surprisingly good results despite the early alpha status.
