Ripbot264 Distributed Encoding

Ripbot264 Distributed Encoding allows us to benefit from having multiple systems around the house by harnessing those extra CPU cycles and putting them to use – distributing the workload and allowing those extra systems to join in on the encode party! So far, I’ve done around a half-dozen DVDs using a single client and single server (two systems) and the performance increase has been quite substantial to me. This post is to act as a guide to help you set up your own distributed encoding network using the Ripbot264 engine.

File import and proxy editing in Lightworks (free) with EyeFrame Converter

The excellent NLE Lightworks is very picky on what video formats to import. EyeFrame Converter can convert most video files to the Lightworks friendly Matrox Mpeg2 I-Frame HD format. If this format is too heavy for your computer, use the convert to proxies option, which will produce low quality clips for a smooth editing process, which later can be swapped with high quality intermediate files for high quality export. H.264 encoding - CPU vs GPU: Nvidia CUDA, AMD Stream, Intel MediaSDK and x264

Over recent years, graphics card manufacturers have been highlighting the ability of their GPUs to handle more than just gaming graphics. Although there has been some success in the market for High Performance Computing (financial services sector and so on), the concept of GPGPU (General Purpose computing on GPU) is still struggling to find purchase with the general consumer. Standards like OpenCL and DirectCompute are working to make an impact but so far this is still fairly minor.

The H.264TSCutter program can also convert recording in REC-format, but it couldn't been tested because of lack of a recording possibility (Topfield).

How to automatically skip commercials in Windows 7 Media Center

Skipping commercials on a HTPC DVR has been around for a long long time, but it isn't always the easiest thing to setup. And even if you do get it working, there are so many options, it can take some time before you get it working the way you want it. So in the spirt of Windows 7 day, and the fact that the next major version of ShowAnalyzer is being released, we figured we'd write up a how to with a few tips and tricks of our own. We start by downloading and installing the main components; DVRMSToolBox, the DTB Media Center Add-in and ShowAnalyzer, and finish off with some troubleshooting for when things go wrong. So if you use Media Center, click through and never pick up the remote to skip a commercial again.

How to Use eac3to

Making the most out of eac3to involves using several external filters. These can be audio decoders and encoders or media splitters and muxers. As eac3to puts quality on top, it uses the best audio decoders available, but since most of them are commercial software, there also freeware alternatives (usually of lower sound quality though). Depending on what is the user's goal more or less of the filters below are needed.

How to record / rip from Hulu or any streaming video source

There are tons of programs, websites and browser plug ins that allow you to download videos from streaming websites like Youtube, Metacafe, Myspace, Hulu and others. Even though most of them work fine, some video providers, especially Hulu and Myspace Video constantly try to protect their content by encrypting their feeds, often making direct downloading impossible. In this guide we will use Replay Video Capture in order to record directly the video you are watching, a method that always works regardless of the source.

Blu-ray Disc standalone results/tests on DVDR of AVCHD, BD, FULLBD, CROPPED, HDAUDIO

THE TEST 1. For AVCHD, NEWBD, OLDBD, C1080, C720, DTSHD, THD you can download test samples from sendspace / mediafire (23MB) and burn the isos with imgburn. If burning to DVD+R make sure booktype is set to DVD-R. In order for FULLBD testing you need to process an original BD with BD-Rebuilder 2. Try playing avchd.iso, newbd.iso, oldbd.iso, avchd_aux.iso, avchd_strict.iso (results try to be as accurate as can be but aren't guaranteed) 3. If avchd.iso plays test avchd-crop720.iso, avchd-crop1080.iso, avchd-dtshd.iso, avchd-truehd.iso If avchd.iso doesn't play but newbd.iso plays test newbd-crop720.iso, newbd-crop1080.iso, newbd-dtshd.iso, newbd-truehd.iso 4. When testing FULLBD if it doesn't play with default output run the index.bdmv through goBD and try again. 4. Report what plays and what doesn't. In order for the the crop iso's to be considered playable they have to show a round circle centered on the screen and and no video artifacts. For FULLBD please report if there is any thing in BDMV/JAR directory. Thanks in advance. H.264 video only

How to Add Text Effects and Unicode Characters to MPEG-4 Subtitles

It has been an ongoing and frustrating problem for me to find a way to create satisfying, professional looking subtitles that will display with MPEG-4 files (DivX, XviD, etc) watched on a standalone DVD player - that is, subtitles with fully-formatted text effects, such as bold, italics, colours and, especially, Unicode characters (specifically, musical note symbols to signify song lyrics in the subtitles) - just like those of professionally-authored DVDs. It's taken many months of perusing dozens of forum threads, and much trial and error, but I've finally figured out a fairly simple and effective way to do it.

Using DGIndex

DGIndex is one of the most versatile and important tools available to digital video enthusiasts. As a standalone program it can give detailed information about MPEG-1 and MPEG-1 files, as well as demuxing and sometimes repairing them. As a preparation and analysis tool used in conjunction with AviSynth or other tools it's invaluable for working with MPEG-2 sources.

Youtube Upload, increase quality/control

The facts: at the moment you can upload an FLV1 Flash clip to youtube and have it pass under the radar unconverted. This saves a lot of time during upload, because you're uploading a lot smaller files. Saves suprises, as you know what you're getting before upload, and you get control over your content.

DVD-Audio decryption and convesion guide

DVD-Audio is a standard for storing high quality stereo or multi-channel audio content on a standard DVD disk. Supported sample rates range from 44.1KHz up to 192KHz, with bit depths of 16, 20 or 24 bits. A DVD-Audio contains both DVD-Audio content (in the AUDIO_TS folder) and DVD-Video content (in the VIDEO_TS folder) and has the DVD-Audio logo. The audio in the AUDIO_TS folder can be either Linear Pulse Compression Modification (abbreviated LPCM, which is uncompressed) or Meridian Lossless Packing (abbreviated MLP, which is losslessly compressed). Usually, a DVD-Audio contains 5.1ch MLP / 2.0ch MLP or 5.1ch MLP / 2.0ch LPCM. There is also audio present in the VIDEO_TS folder, but of lower quality (that is with a lower sample rate and a lower bit depth). More information can be found

How to normalize volume level in avi files with mp3 audio streams

Frequently we come upon avi files with sound whose volume diverges from the usual norm. Either it is too strong in which case our speakers choke up or it is too faint, forcing us to constantly adjust the volume in the software layer/speakers/Hi-Fi stereo, especially when playing episodes of our favorite series from a playlist. In some extreme cases, an error in the original compression process means that even if we raise the volume to 100% there is nothing reasonably audible. Fortunately this can be easily rectified, as long as the audio stream in the avi has been compressed with an MP3 codec.

1) Went to Circuit City, used $40 off coupon to get Xbox 360 HD-DVD player for $160. 2) Came home, opened box of Xbox 360 HD-DVD player. 3) Plug in USB for HD-DVD player to PC USB port. 4) Plug in power for HD-DVD player to powerstrip. 5) Windows XP automatically recognizes HD-DVD player as XBOX 360 HD-DVD Player and Toshiba HD-DVD ROM... no hacked drivers required. 6) Installed PowerDVD 6.5 7) Insert HD-DVD movie disk. The 360 HD-DVD player came with King Kong, but I also purchased "Fearless" with Jet Li. cool.gif Hit play on PowerDVD 6.5.

This “Guide” here, started as my own answer to a post I did some time ago. It end up to something that I wish to share with everyone interesting on this kind of conversion, without the use of avisynth. I’m a PAL user and I wrote all this with that in mind. But maybe our NTSC fellows can benefit from it too.

Mini Guide: Normalizing Audio for Multiple AVI files

This batch file will process a directory of .AVI files, leveling the audio volumes, and creating new AVIs with 224kbs lame encoded mp3s. The source AVI files are not changed in any way, so if you aren't happy with the results - no harm done. This isn't a lossless method of normalization, but my ears can't tell the difference on the tests I've performed.

DVD Media Tracking Error (TE) and Focus Error (FE) testing

Did you know that it's possible to perform scans on blank CD and DVD media before they are burned? This type of test is called a FE/TE or TE/FE test and is possible on some Plextor drives using PlexTools Professional or PlexTools Professional XL, it's possible on some BenQ drives using QSuite and it's possible on LiteOn 6S series drives using DVDScan. Of these only the Plextor drives can run TE/FE tests on blank CD media.

The Many Ways to DVD Authoring

This guide gives the conceptual theory behind the process of authoring a DVD with emphasis on the activities along the workflow. It also describes some commercial software products, their pros and cons and limitations. The guide will be updated weekly so come back for topics such as CSS and Macrovision protection and dual-layer DVD authoring. The author runs a DVD replication facility in San Jose, CA and has encountered many problems due to poor authoring from some of his clients. These problems will be openly discussed so you won’t make the same mistake when you make your own DVD.

Stand-alone MPEG-4 (DivX, XviD...) Player Buyers Guide

Quite recently I went through the tedious process of researching the whole stand-alone player topic. Overall, there seems to be huge confusion over the actual technical features of these players and you have to scavenge dozens of Internet Forums for bits and pieces of unreliable information to aid your buying decision. Furthermore, Europeans suffer from a huge selection of players while people in the US have to choose between only a few available models.

MSU Lossless Codecs Comparison

The name of this video codec category declares full quality losses absence - the decompressed video stream should be completely identical to original. Output quality is same for all codecs. Absolute absence of losses is a very strong requirement, therefore it is often hard to achieve compression ratios above 3:1. Some of the tested codecs have an opportunity of work in "lossy" mode; it allows to reach considerably higher compression degree with rather small losses of quality. However, only "fully lossless" mode is considered in the current comparison. The only parameter of comparison is the compression level.

MPEG2 Encoder test(XviD source), CCE vs TMPGEnc vs Procoder vs MC vs QuEnc

So, i guess this will really prove 2 things: 1) If you know a little bit (dont have to be the master in it) about how to tweak the software encoders, you will get a very satisfatory output with any of this 5 encoders. 2) The difference on the output from all this 5 encoders will not justificate the price difference the encoders have ($0 to $2000).

doom9 Codec shoot-out 2004

It has been a full year since I last looked at a handful of video codecs and how they are suited for typical DVD backup scenarios. We've seen a lot of activity in the codec market in 2004: For one, there are now several H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC (referred to as AVC henceforth) encoders available. With the adoption of AVC as codec for the upcoming high definition DVD formats (be it Blu-ray or HD DVD), as well as its adoption into digital TV standards, I expect to see a lot of movement in that market in the years to come. Microsoft's WMV9 has also been approved for the upcoming high definition DVD formats, and Microsoft is making some inroads into the television business as well, but so far those are proprietary systems and tied to specific geographical areas.

doom9 DVB Basics

When I decided to get started with DVB, I was in for a rough ride. I couldn't find a site that told me everything I really needed to know, and so even though I already has a basic knowledge when I went to a store for the first time, I was still at the mercy of the salespeople. This is an attempt to give you some of the information I think might be useful to you, and which helps you to become a better informed customer.
