Ripbot264 Distributed Encoding Ripbot264 Distributed Encoding allows us to benefit from having multiple systems around the house by harnessing those extra CPU cycles and putting them to use – distributing the workload and allowing those extra systems to join in on the encode party! So far, I’ve done around a half-dozen DVDs using a single client and single server (two systems) and the performance increase has been quite substantial to me. This post is to act as a guide to help you set up your own distributed encoding network using the Ripbot264 engine. File import and proxy editing in Lightworks (free) with EyeFrame Converter The excellent NLE Lightworks is very picky on what video formats to import. EyeFrame Converter can convert most video files to the Lightworks friendly Matrox Mpeg2 I-Frame HD format. If this format is too heavy for your computer, use the convert to proxies option, which will produce low quality clips for a smooth editing process, which later can be swapped with high quality intermediate files for high quality export. H.264 encoding - CPU vs GPU: Nvidia CUDA, AMD Stream, Intel MediaSDK and x264 Over recent years, graphics card manufacturers have been highlighting the ability of their GPUs to handle more than just gaming graphics. Although there has been some success in the market for High Performance Computing (financial services sector and so on), the concept of GPGPU (General Purpose computing on GPU) is still struggling to find purchase with the general consumer. Standards like OpenCL and DirectCompute are working to make an impact but so far this is still fairly minor. How to convert Topfield PVR .REC files to DVD Converting Topfield .REC files into DVD compliant format is a somewhat tricky process. There are many ways to do it, which some are easier than others, some involve commercial solutions, and some are totally free. The approach to take in the conversion process depends on many aspects, like the amount of time you wish to spend, which operating system you work on (Linux or Windows) and how long is the actual recording. This article consists of several mini-guides to get you going. It does not contain every possible detail, but this should be enough to get you started. This guide is made with Topfield PVRc-5100 MasterPiece, but should apply to pretty much all non-HD models. This guide may also applicable to other brands of PVRs that produce a similar standard program stream. How to automatically skip commercials in Windows 7 Media Center Skipping commercials on a HTPC DVR has been around for a long long time, but it isn't always the easiest thing to setup. And even if you do get it working, there are so many options, it can take some time before you get it working the way you want it. So in the spirt of Windows 7 day, and the fact that the next major version of ShowAnalyzer is being released, we figured we'd write up a how to with a few tips and tricks of our own. We start by downloading and installing the main components; DVRMSToolBox, the DTB Media Center Add-in and ShowAnalyzer, and finish off with some troubleshooting for when things go wrong. So if you use Media Center, click through and never pick up the remote to skip a commercial again. How to record / rip from Hulu or any streaming video source There are tons of programs, websites and browser plug ins that allow you to download videos from streaming websites like Youtube, Metacafe, Myspace, Hulu and others. Blu-ray Disc standalone results/tests on DVDR of AVCHD, BD, FULLBD, CROPPED, HDAUDIO THE TEST 1. For AVCHD, NEWBD, OLDBD, C1080, C720, DTSHD, THD you can download test samples from sendspace / mediafire (23MB) and burn the isos with imgburn. If burning to DVD+R make sure booktype is set to DVD-R. In order for FULLBD testing you need to process an original BD with BD-Rebuilder 2. Try playing avchd.iso, newbd.iso, oldbd.iso, avchd_aux.iso, avchd_strict.iso (results try to be as accurate as can be but aren't guaranteed) 3. If avchd.iso plays test avchd-crop720.iso, avchd-crop1080.iso, avchd-dtshd.iso, avchd-truehd.iso If avchd.iso doesn't play but newbd.iso plays test newbd-crop720.iso, newbd-crop1080.iso, newbd-dtshd.iso, newbd-truehd.iso 4. When testing FULLBD if it doesn't play with default output run the index.bdmv through goBD and try again. 4. Report what plays and what doesn't. In order for the the crop iso's to be considered playable they have to show a round circle centered on the screen and and no video artifacts. How to Add Text Effects and Unicode Characters to MPEG-4 Subtitles It has been an ongoing and frustrating problem for me to find a way to create satisfying, professional looking subtitles that will display with MPEG-4 files (DivX, XviD, etc) watched on a standalone DVD player - that is, subtitles with fully-formatted text effects, such as bold, italics, colours and, especially, Unicode characters (specifically, musical note symbols to signify song lyrics in the subtitles) - just like those of professionally-authored DVDs. It's taken many months of perusing dozens of forum threads, and much trial and error, but I've finally figured out a fairly simple and effective way to do it. DVD-Audio decryption and convesion guide DVD-Audio is a standard for storing high quality stereo or multi-channel audio content on a standard DVD disk. Supported sample rates range from 44.1KHz up to 192KHz, with bit depths of 16, 20 or 24 bits. A DVD-Audio contains both DVD-Audio content (in the AUDIO_TS folder) and DVD-Video content (in the VIDEO_TS folder) and has the DVD-Audio logo. The audio in the AUDIO_TS folder can be either Linear Pulse Compression Modification (abbreviated LPCM, which is uncompressed) or Meridian Lossless Packing (abbreviated MLP, which is losslessly compressed). Usually, a DVD-Audio contains 5.1ch MLP / 2.0ch MLP or 5.1ch MLP / 2.0ch LPCM. There is also audio present in the VIDEO_TS folder, but of lower quality (that is with a lower sample rate and a lower bit depth). How to normalize volume level in avi files with mp3 audio streams Frequently we come upon avi files with sound whose volume diverges from the usual norm. Either it is too strong in which case our speakers choke up or it is too faint, forcing us to constantly adjust the volume in the software layer/speakers/Hi-Fi stereo, especially when playing episodes of our favorite series from a playlist. In some extreme cases, an error in the original compression process means that even if we raise the volume to 100% there is nothing reasonably audible. Fortunately this can be easily rectified, as long as the audio stream in the avi has been compressed with an MP3 codec. MSU Lossless Codecs Comparison The name of this video codec category declares full quality losses absence - the decompressed video stream should be completely identical to original. Output quality is same for all codecs. Absolute absence of losses is a very strong requirement, therefore it is often hard to achieve compression ratios above 3:1. Some of the tested codecs have an opportunity of work in "lossy" mode; it allows to reach considerably higher compression degree with rather small losses of quality. However, only "fully lossless" mode is considered in the current comparison. The only parameter of comparison is the compression level. doom9 Codec shoot-out 2004 It has been a full year since I last looked at a handful of video codecs and how they are suited for typical DVD backup scenarios. We've seen a lot of activity in the codec market in 2004: For one, there are now several H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC (referred to as AVC henceforth) encoders available. With the adoption of AVC as codec for the upcoming high definition DVD formats (be it Blu-ray or HD DVD), as well as its adoption into digital TV standards, I expect to see a lot of movement in that market in the years to come. Microsoft's WMV9 has also been approved for the upcoming high definition DVD formats, and Microsoft is making some inroads into the television business as well, but so far those are proprietary systems and tied to specific geographical areas.
