Which SATA DVD Burner is best for QUAD System?

mlong30 posted 2008 Dec 30 20:27
Hi All,

I just recently purchased a Intel Core2 QUAD 6600 3gig system, and would now like to add a quality DVD SATA Burner, but not sure which to buy?

I currenlty have a IDE Plextor PX712A, and PX716A that has served me well on my old server. I would like to stay with plextor but open to suggestions for my type of system. When I look at plextor's website, and pioneer's website, I can't tell the difference between each DVD burner they offer. I also don't know, if I can change the BIT TYPE SETTING, on these new drives.

1. Must be able to change Bit Type Setting on DL disk when using ImgBurn.
2. Not sure if LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling will work on Verbatim Inkjet Printable DVD+R DL

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

My first suggestion would be to get the PIONEER 216 Sata dvd burner but you'll have to use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT to enable bitsetting.

PIONEER, $29.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129032

Or get a LG or SAMSUNG SATA dvd burner.

LG, $22.99 FREE SHIPPING

SAMSUNG, $24.99 FREE SHIPPING

When using the MediaCodeSpeedEdit, is the change made directly within the burner itself, or can I change it using ImgBurn?

Thanks!

LightScribe will only work with LightScribe compatible discs.

I used Light Scribe until I noticed the label flakes off over time. Not so good.

i've got some a couple years old. never had any labels flake off but they do wear off pretty quickly if used in fabric cd holders.

it would be cool to check the last post's date and, if over 6 months old, display a warning image

I guess I screwed up! I purchased the Plextor SATA PX880SA, and now I can't set my book type using Img Burn 2.5

Is there a list of SATA drives that have Book Type built in?

Thanks!

 Whoas! I only saw this post now on 9/8/09!
Yup, you can booktype with that Plextor drive by using IMGBURN.
On IMGBURN go to TOOLS...then click on DRIVE.....then go to CHANGE BOOKTYPE
then click on the PLEXTOR TAB....then just follow what it says to booktype to DVD-ROM.

This thread is just determined to never die!!
LOL!!

Ya know... i have had many drives that ImgBurn was supposed to be able to set the book type on, yet i have never been able to get it to change the booktype.
I always had to use modded firmware.

I've never had any problems with using the booktype setting in IMGBURN....But then again I've always checked to see which brands of dvdrw's would be compatible with IMGBURN's booktype setting. And if not then like you I've used modded, but I call it hacked firmware!

I tried this and it didn't work. It works on my old plextor PX-716A, but not the new one SATA PX880SA.

I'd suggest going to the IMGBURN forum and post your question there. LightningUK may have a answer for you or post it at CDFreaks.com in the PLEXTOR forum.

Plextor drives aren't real Plextor drives now.

You might find that you can change the booktype by using the make that goes along with the REAL manufacturer of your Plextor branded drive.

i.e. it might have Plextor written on it but really its a LiteOn / Samsung / Optiarc drive.

Well, hacked, modded, tomato, tomăto :P

I pretty much exclusively use Verbatim so i would hope that media would be comatable with ImgBurn's booktype setting feature.

But i really can't test it now because i am using "altered" firmware :P

I never really looked into it because it was just easier to reflash any of my drives and never have to think about it again.

 I completely forgot that Plextor doesn't manufacture their own drives.
