Visioneer 4400 USB scanner

kenmo posted 2009 Oct 27 13:26
Anyone know of a Linux driver for Visioneer 4400 USB scanner? I'm running Mandriva 2009 Spring. I checked the Visioneer website and they only offer Windows dirvers (only Windows XP & prior)...

Thanks kindly...

Ken

Your version of Linux OS does not support this scanner. There are no drivers according to http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html

As posted above, there currently is not any support for the model of Visioneer you have http://www.sane-project.org/unsupported/visioneer-onetouch4400.html

Most HP, old Canon, and Epson scanners seem to have support. With HP getting the majority of user's votes.
I have a CanoScan N670U, which works quite well. My family members seem to gravitate to the HP AIO printers. With the hplip drivers, setup was a snap, and things just work ;)

If you would rather not buy a new scanner just for Linux support, try running Windows in VirtualBox ( www.virtualbox.org ). VirtualBox has good USB support, and users have reported using their web cams and scanners with this method.

Should you decide to purchase a new scanner (or all in one) double check the sane site, or if you opt for an HP model check the hplip site for support. Though hplip appears to only be for printing, the scanning support is listed there as well. http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html

If that Visioneer is anything like mine was, it needs to be shot and buried.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's time to retire your old scanner forever.

I highly suggest the Epson V300 scanner. Affordable, faster, good color and scan quality. Even good with slides!! (And I use professional slide scanning tools, for comparison.) I replaced my ancient Visioneer series earlier this year, no regrets -- although I wish I'd have done it long ago.

Best price at Amazon for V300.

For not much more, the V500 with digital ICE is better:

The V500 ICE does well to remove dust, scratches, etc, from what I've seen.

I paid way too much for mine at Best Buy. Oh well, needed it quick.
