Video/audio file splitting weirdness
DoctorDidj posted 2008 Jun 12 08:48
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've searched the forum and FAQs and found nothing to address it.

I'm trying to convert an MP4 to iPod H.264 320w and I'm using the quick preset, not making any changes to the defaults. The GUI says it takes Movie.mp4 and saves Movie.mp4.ff but when I run it, I don't find one file named Movie.mp4.ff ... instead, I see three files:

Movie.mp4.ff.audio.mp4
Movie.mp4.ff.video.mp4
Movie.mp4.ff.wav

Apparently ffmpegX is splitting the video and audio into different files, or something. In any case, if I play the .video.mp4 I see video only, with no sound. Do I need to do something more to get one file with both video and audio? I've checked the settings and confirmed that both video and audio encoding are selected.

Using this preset, the encoder will first re-encode the video (Movie.mp4.ff.video.mp4), then decode the audio to an uncompressed format (Movie.mp4.ff.wav) before encoding that to AAC (Movie.mp4.ff.audio.mp4).
When both video and audio are encoded and everything went well, then the video and audio are muxed into a new file (Movie.mp4.ff.mp4), and the three temporary files are deleted.

Please post the Process Information log (accessable through the blue "i" in the ffmpegX Progress window) to see what error stopped the process.

Case, thanks for the information. I tried it again, and now it works correctly, the .ff.mp4 file is there and it includes both video and audio. Apparently it ran out of disc space the first time. So I'm all set ... thanks again!
