unburned line on DL disc?

royal007 posted 2009 Apr 28 13:29
I thought I would start burning some DL discs, never done this before, so bought a 50 pack at Sam's Club. I have a Samsung SH-S203N burner. I used imgburn and I have burnt 4 discs so far. On 2 of them when I hold the disc up to the light I can see a line of about half an inch which looks to be unburned starting from the center of the disc. On another disc the line was like an inch or so long. I made sure there was no dust and used compressed air to make sure nothing was on it before burning. I tried a regular dvdr and no such line appeared, then tried another DL disc and the line appeared again. Just wondering why this is happening and if its a bad problem. I read the discs to iso after and they transfered over just fine. But am wondering if that unburned line will bring up problems in the future. Could it be the discs? has anyone had this problem? Wondering if I should take back the discs, or is it my burner? or is this normal with DL discs. Thanks. I tried to take a photo of the line but it is very hard with the reflection of the camera on the disc.

how do they play?
you'll find most cheap media a waste of time and money

They play back fine. I looked on here before buying the media as they was suppose to be the best. Verbatim DVD+R DL made in singapore rated 2.4x speed.

I am burning at 2.4x. wonder if i should burn them at 4x, as imgburn says it can write them at 2.4x & 4x, but the discs on them only say 2.4x.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your choice of reliable DL media is limited to Verbatim. That's it. Burning faster is likely to be a very bad idea. If your discs play OK then they are fine. Despite what some claim, it is possible to get bad burns on Verbatim DVD+R DL Made In Singapore media. It's rare, but it can happen.

Do the files use up the entire 8.5GB capacity of the DL disc? If not, the unburnt section of the disc is probably just that...unburnt. Does Imgburn burn from the outside-in?

well the unburnt parts are a line going through the parts of burnt data, kind of like a piece of string was on the disc and it burnt around it. if that makes any sense

Oh... Probably not just unused disc then. :)
