| Hi so as the title says, I am having some trouble downloading the mpeg2enc for my intel mac, running MacOSX10.4.11
I can download everything else, but when I click on the link to download mpegenc2 I get a page that is just a lot of words and symbols I don't understand. I've tried downloading it from some other sites but no luck. I just get the same page filled with confusing stuff. I'm hoping someone can help me out or direct to a place where I can download it. thanks

1/ You can just load the page with gibberish and save the page to a file; or 2/ You can Option-click (=Alt-click) the link to download to your default download location; or 3/ You can Control-click the link and select 'Download Linked File' or 'Download Linked File As...'; or 4/ You can download with Firefox, which behaves differently when encountering this binary; or 5/ You can search the forum for a ZIP'ed version of mpeg2enc.intel Either one of these options will do.

| I cannot get mpeg2enc.
The file I download is plain text and not recognized by Stuffit (even with a .zip extension) whether downloaded with Safari or FireFox. I don't know if this is the problem that causes "Installation Failed" message. Any ideas? Thanks.

| Thanks...
Tried all that. Found the zip'd file too. It was the only version with the correct icon association. ffmpegx still will not install it - nor recognize it when moved to /Library... manually. Apparently it contains the key to "finishing" the mpeg2 encoding for without it, the encoding produces unusable files, "Progress" reports: Finished, and Finder says ffmpegx unexpectedly quit though it has not. I am at a loss...

You're not to move the downloaded binaries manually at all. Download them, leave them on your desktop, open ffmpegX, direct it to the binaries on your desktop and they will be installed in the proper place automatically.

| Levina,
Thanks - moving the file manually was a "last resort" attempt at some work-around. No matter what I have tried, I get this result: ----- - - - - The installation was not successful. ## WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information. To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort. | There has to be something odd about your setup. So, back to basics, if I may --
Are you logged in with an account that has Administrator privileges? The installer needs it to execute the sudo command. If your password has spaces or special characters, you may want to change that. Is ffmpegX located in your (all-users) /Applications folder? Is ffmpegX.app in a subfolder that has special characters? Does your boot partition volume name have special characters?

| And, after you sort out the stuff Case talked about, make sure you uninstall everything from your previous attemps (use Spotlight), before trying to install ffmpegX and the binaries again. | ||||||

| Thanks for all your suggestions, most of which I have already tried.
It is reassuring to me that I had taken some correct approaches. As for the "re-installation" approach, both mencoder and mplayer were re-installed without a glitch. Only mpeg2enc (or mpeg2enc.intel) will not install. I have noticed other posts reflecting not only the same (or similar) problem but also some difficulty in locating the file to download. IS there some issue with that particular file? hmm...

| Hi,
Just wanted to thank Case for the advice. I had the same problem as its1235, not recognizing the page of gibberish as the text file I needed. I just clicked on the link and selected all and saved it to desktop, then opened the ffmpeg thing, and selected it's location and it worked like a treat. Just did a avi to flv conversion with no problems. This is awesome! I had a go at making flv's a few months ago and couldn't work it out. Its1235, are you remembering to put your mac password in the box? As long as you save the text file to the desktop, as an .intel file, it should work. I hope you get it going. Thanks again guys, excellent forum! frasay |
