Sylvania VCR-DVD Recorder

| I just bought a Sylvania VCR-DVD Recorder from Sam's Club last night. Unit was $200 and seemed simple to use compared to the other unit Sam's Club sold (I think it was a Pioneer). The unit will not recognize bland DVDs. They are the right type and I tried two different brands. Called the tech support line and they said I needed the latest firmware (they should have that line on hold message). He said the CD should have been in the box, but of course it was not. They are going to mail me one but it will take 10 days. Why don't they make it available on line (like Lite-On does)? I am sought of wondering if I should just return the unit or wait for the firmware?
How can companies ship units that just do not work? Anyone have the firmware for this machine they can email me?

| The last time SYLVANIA was a high quality product maker, tv was still black and white.
Personally, I'd return it. Odds are, as with most combo units, it'll break as soon as the warranty wears out in 90-365 days.

Sounds like good advice. The telephone tech support said I could contact the email tech support and they might be able to email me the firmware upgrade that I could burn onto a CD myself. I emailed them last night. If I do not hear back from them by the end of today, I will return the unit.

| Ok, so I return the unit to Sam's club. They take it back no problem. One of the workers there saw me in the customer service line with the unit. He told me the units are junk and they have been getting a "lot" of returns on them. I asked why they don't just pull the units. All the returns are certainly not making anyone any money. Plus it hurts the reputation for Sylvania and Sam's Club. He told me that Sam's Club (aka Walmart) cannot pull the units from the shelves until and unless they get the ok from Sylvania.
I was mainly pissed because at $3/gallon for gas it cost me an extra trip.

Don't be, for your convenience I converted in gallons the price of gass in europe. I payed 5.68 euro's per gallon yesterday, wich would probably be about $7.5

| If Sams Club/Wal Mart pulled all the cheap junk they sell, the shelves would be bare. | ||

I cannot agree with that one. They do sell Pioneer, for example. There is a lot of good stuff available.

Return the Sylviana I doubt that Sams club [WalMart] would need anyones OK to pull anaything they wanted to. I also doubt that WalMart is eating the majority if any cost of any returns. I bought an item from Sams club that was defective. It was taken care of by Sams club and the manufacture, with no problem and in a very timely mannor. All by email and toll free phone. If something goes wrong anything you buy is only as good as how well the seller stands behind it A friend buught an ilo RHD04. like mine. After some 60 days the HDD had problems. ilo tech said send in to us, shipping your cost and we will return it, our cost. He took it to WalMqrt. They could not exchange it, its discontinued, but would give him his money back. He said he wanted the 04 and wanted it fixed at no cost to him. Theytook it and returied it less than 3 weeks later, no cost and its been working ever since some 5 months. As lordsmurf says there is a lot of good stuff available but loudrsmurf Ihave a Go Video Combo unit feeding my WalMart bought ilo RHD04. I thas never failed

| Interesting:
I have the Emerson EWR10d4. Its the same as the this Sylvania w/o the vcr. It works fantastic. They do not suck. The problem is is that Funai never state on the boxes that these recorders only use x4 DVD-R and 1x-2x DVD-RW out the box. People buy x8 media and it gives errors so people assume that they are crap recorders. I called first and they told me about the x4 media. That's what I buy for my unit and it records great! Bought mine at Walmart. $75 bucks. One of the greatest steals I've copped! I've transfered so many VHS taped movies to DVD with this thing. It never fails me. |
