| hello!
I have a problem, I try to author a DVD in GUI for DVD author (using Muxman instead of dvdauthor) and input my subtitles in SUP format (other formats doesn't work while using MuxMan). My problem is: At first I got a .srt file which I convert with SubtitleCreator to .sup file. Then when I add my .sup file in GfD and create my DVD My subtitles shows in red color (don't know how to change this in SubtitleCreator) and they begin in the middle of the screen and dissapear to the right (so I'm not abel to see the whole text). Please Help! How do I fix thoes subtitles regards Michal
| manono posted 2008 Jun 29 07:32 | ||||||||
| You can easily change the sub colors and positioning using DVDSubEdit. Open all the VOBs at once. Reading the parts of the included guide that have to do with your problem might be a help.
You could probably set it up correctly using SubtitleCreator, but since I don't use it for that I don't know how.
| manusse posted 2008 Jun 29 15:39 | ||||||||
The colors of the subtitles are located in the IFO file associated to your DVD VOB not in the SUP file. For SubtitleCreator to correctly match the colors it uses with your DVD, please first open the associated IFO file before generating the SUP file. It should then work fine. Cheers Manusse

hm I have now downloaded this program and it helped me a bit.. I have now changed the color of my subs. from red to white...and tried to move them to the left... but I have notised that my subs look like thoes while I check off the "set video frame" button in DVDSubEdit...and I don't know how to fix them so they look normal again help! I have also tried to move them a bit to the left but there is still a bit that dissapears to the right of the screen. The size of my subtitles seems to be too big...how do I make them smaller :(?
But I have to convert a SUP file from my SRT before I crate IFO so how do you mean? michcio
| manono posted 2008 Jun 30 02:30 | ||||||||
Hi-
Sorry, but I didn't understand any of that.
If they really are too big, then you go back to the program you used to create them and start over again. Again though, I don't use SubtitleCreator for creating DVD subtitles (I use MaestroSBT), so I can't help with the specifics.
| michcio posted 2008 Jun 30 08:12 | ||||||||
what I ment was: When I open my .sup file in DVDSubEdit my subtitles seem to be ok...(but they aren't when I click show DVD in GfD they are moved to the right). And when I check of the "show video frame" button then they look like these in GfD when I try to "show DVD". If you still don't understand what I mean looka at the pictures below:
I don't know are my subtitles to big?! I can also show you a picture how it look like when I move my subtitles to the left in DVDSubEdit
here the subtitles seems to be fine but then in some places:
and when a person in the movie talks much some of the subtitle are still outside the movie frame:
So how do I make my subtitle centered again and shall I first make them smaller?! I hope my picture wasn't to hard to understand... Michal
| manono posted 2008 Jun 30 08:22 | ||||||||
| Sorry, but I can't help as I've never had the problem. You might have better luck over at Doom9. Although manusse (the SubtitleCreator guy) comes here often, and jeanl (the DVDSubEdit guy) comes here sometimes, Doom9 is perhaps the home base for both. Since you obviously put a lot of work into your last post, you might want to point them (jeanl, especially) to your post. Or maybe matusse, since he's already posted in this thread, will show up to help again as best he can. It seems to me that you must have done a few things wrong when creating the subs in SubtitleCreator, and he should be able to help with that. | ||||||||
| borax posted 2008 Jun 30 09:07 | ||||||||
| I also think that the SUP file is 'corrupted' in some way. That's probably nothing which can be solved in GfD itself. The first thing I would try is to redo the conversion from srt to sup (maybe with another program).
Another possibility would be to convert the srt file to ssa and the render the subtitles with MaestroSBT (then you will also need the development version of GfD - have a look to this thread: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic339258.html ). Just out of curiosity: Can you post (or send me by mail) a short SUP file (containing only a few of these 'currupted' subtitles)?
| träskmannen posted 2008 Jun 30 09:08 | ||||||||
| I think your problem is that your final product is half-D1 (352 x 576), I once had a similar problem when using SubtitleCreator in combination with that resolution. I can see two different ways to solve the issue: either re-encode the video to full D1 or create smaller subs. | ||||||||
| borax posted 2008 Jun 30 09:14 | ||||||||
| träskmannen is right! I've not seen the 352 x 576 resolution for the final video as in the images it looks like full D1 (movie info: XVID 720x480...) | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jun 30 09:22 | ||||||||
If you create smaller subs how do you center them ?
sure here I'll post a short 'corrupted' subtitle (4 lines just opened as .srt in SubtitleCreator and then converted to .sup)
oh more new fileformats :(...I am already going through so many steps before I finally can author my DVD in GfD are you sure my way; when I just convert .srt to . sup in SubtitleCreator is wrong and my problem really can't be solved? But sure I can test this oppertiunity as well :) The .sup file: sup.sup
| michcio posted 2008 Jun 30 11:02 | ||||||||
ah but I want to have my solution in half DVD ( then the filesize is smaller? ) or how do you mean? how do I fix that? Can't I just choose half DVD resolution to the subtitles as well?
| michcio posted 2008 Jun 30 13:35 | ||||||||
| yay it finally works...I have change the settings from half DVD to full DVD during the convertion from .avi to .mpeg and then when I play my DVD the subtitles are in the middle!!! (centered) :D | ||||||||
| manusse posted 2008 Jun 30 16:06 | ||||||||
Let me try to restate it clearly. The colors of DVD subtitles are not stored in the subtitle itself but in the IFO. The IFO defines a 16 color palette and the DVD uses 4 (generally) of those colors by subpic. We say these are indexed colors: In the encoding of the subpic, indexes 0 to 15 are used for the colors, each one corresponding to one palette entry from the IFO file. Now when you ask SubtitleCreator to, let's say, create a white subtitle, this has a meaning only with the final IFO of the DVD. So, you must first open your IFO file in SubtitleCreator for it to generate a correct SUP file. No let's say there's no IFO. This is generally because you are generating the DVD yourself. In this case, this really depends on the program you are using to generate your DVD. You can use SubtitleCreator's prefered palette. Choose Format->Use prefered subtitle colors, check that Settings->Write palette with SUP files -> As IFO is checked, then generate your SUP file. An IFO file of the same name will be generated. Then use this IFO file with GfD. I've searched how to do it, and found it in GfD's help: From GfD help (http://download.videohelp.com/GFD/Help/VideoFileDialog.html)
In the Video + Audio Files menu, in the Subtitles dialog, there is a Colors dialog. Click on the open folder button just next to it and open the IFO file generated by SubtitleCreator. This should do the job. Hope this helps Cheers Manusse
| michcio posted 2008 Jun 30 18:51 | ||||||||
| yeah thanks manusse I think I understand better now how the whole thing works ;)...but as said my problem is already solved (I will maybe later post a post which has more to do with my subtitles color). So far I got a new problem:(:
I have input three different languages subtitles (in GfD) all in .sup format. But the thing is; two of my subtitles was in .txt format from the beginning and had a structure like this "{200}{300} Text" and the third subtitle was in .srt format 1 00.00.01.000 --> 00.00.02.00 Text all these 3 formats did sucessfully convert to .sup (I convert them with SubtitleCreator) but after I created my DVD these two which was .txt from the beginning was working great...though the third one (.srt) wasn't synhronised with my vidoe (I have synhronised it befor with TimeAdjuster and the .srt file worked as well as thoes .txt). Please help why doesn't the .srt file work as well as the .txt in .sup format :(
| manusse posted 2008 Jul 01 13:39 | ||||||||
| Is your DVD NSTC or PAL? | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 01 14:33 | ||||||||
| it's PAL and when I open my .srt file in SubtitleCreator it asks if I want my subtitles in PAL, NTSC... format. Where I of course klick PAL ...what's the problem :(... and the thing is I got 2 .srt files to 2 different videos .... so to each video I got 2 .txt and 1 .srt and both .srt doesn't work in these videos :( | ||||||||
| manusse posted 2008 Jul 01 16:47 | ||||||||
| Ok, normally this should have worked. There is a problem with NTSC subs but not with PAL. Could you please describe the type of timing problem you have with your generated SUP files. Is there an offset or a drift?
Cheers Manusse | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 01 17:35 | ||||||||
What's pffset or drift :oops: you mean how much my subtitles are moved from the normal position (in wich I set them at the beginning) ? AH! I was just about to see how long time it was between my .srt file and the finished .sup file when I discovered that the .srt file was wrong synhronised already in the beginning.... I'm now making a new DVD and I hope all will be good this time...I'm really sorry!!!! It was completly my fault :(:(:( But thank you very much for your help!!! And now (if the .sup files work correctly) I will try to change my subtitle color regards and thanks!!! Michal
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 01 18:46 | ||||||||
| yay! it works perfect now so it was my fault..I'm really sorry! what I just need now is to fix the subtitles color...they're blue-green instead of white-black...:/ will test some in DVDSubEdit...but I already see that I got many .VOB files (8)..how do I know which one represents a subtitle? Is there a better way to fix subtitle color? (Open .sup file / full domain)
regards michal | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 01 19:00 | ||||||||
| I have now change all the subtitles color to white-black ... I have just opend alla of the vobs for itself ( without the first one) so I opened nr. 2 change my subs...then nr 3...and so on. My subtitles work really good and I'm finally done with my DVD :D ...I will burn it tomorrow :D thank for all your help!!!!!!!!!!! I consider to make a DVD tutorial of my own now :P "How to author DVD - from begining to the end" :) But I will see how it goes :D
thank you!!!!! Michal :D
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 01 19:54 | ||||||||
| I just got one more problem if it's OK guys. When I now look at my DVD the audio track isn't looping...instead after one audio has finished another (from another menu) is started...how do I do so my audio loop properly please help!! (I have set loop -> pause 0 under the menu propeties :S) | ||||||||
| manono posted 2008 Jul 01 19:54 | ||||||||
Open them all at once and you'll only have to change the colors once. You don't have to do each VOB separately. Highlight the first VOB and then use Shift/Down Arrow to get the rest.
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 01 19:57 | ||||||||
| yeah smart!!! thanks!! :D | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 02 06:31 | ||||||||
| but how do I do to loop my audio?! | ||||||||
| manusse posted 2008 Jul 02 09:00 | ||||||||
My post answers this problem. If you ask for an answer and somebody is spending time to answer, you should read his answer and try it. In my answer I explained that you need to create an IFO file with SubtitleCreator that you can use with GfD to get the right colors. No need for DVDSubEdit in your case. But if you don't read others'answers... You even sent me a private message urging for an answer but you don't read them. I'm a bit disappointed by your attitude. :-x Manusse
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 02 09:33 | ||||||||
what shall I do there? at 'use prefered subtitle colors I can choose between; Ovarwrite last 4 colors and Overwrite all colors
yes 'write palette with SUP files' is checked but when I generate my SUP file (Save SUP as?) there is no IFO file created.
this wasn't a question.. what I ment was that I will now change my subtitles color with DVDSubEdit oh this was just one big missunderstanding... what happend was: 1). I asked for help with changing subtitles color. 2). I got two aswers: - yours; creating the IFO file - manonos :
3). I tried your method but no IFO file wasn't created...SORRY I should inform you before!!! :(:(:( 4). Then I tried to first create my DVD and then change my subtitlescolors with DVDSubEdit (manonos method) and that worked just fine. Sorry it was my fault again :( Michal
| manusse posted 2008 Jul 02 13:34 | ||||||||
OK, maybe I was rude but... Anyway:
Did you also check As .IFO? Normally with V2.2 when you save as SUP an IFO file (same name as the sup file followed by .ifo) will be created at the same place. Are you using V2.2? Manusse
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 02 15:43 | ||||||||
Yes I have or it was already checked
Yes it's v.2.2 I am using. Michal
| manusse posted 2008 Jul 02 16:25 | ||||||||
| Are you sure no IFO file is generated when you save your srt file as sup. Please try again in a directory where you don't have many files. Maybe you don't see it but it's there. I'm pretty sure it's working. | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 02 16:41 | ||||||||
| yeah I'm sure I have tested 3 times and as you said in a new folder where I had nothing but just my .srt file ... as before just the .sup file is created... but nevermind it works for me with the DVDSubEditor. If you don't have the energy to help me with this paticiular problem anymore it's OK :)... | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 02 19:00 | ||||||||
| I really need to get the aduio loop right in GfD though.. I'm really gratfull for your answers!! :)
Michal | ||||||||
| borax posted 2008 Jul 03 02:59 | ||||||||
No idea. I've never heard about this problem yet. It works flawless if I use it myself. Tested with WinDVD, PowerDVD, MPC and my own SA player (and probably with a lot of other players by different GfD users too). You can check the menu cells in ifoedit: Load the Video_ts.ifo in ifoedit. Open the VMGM_PGCI_UT (click on the [+]) You should see a PGC-Menu entry for each menu (MainMenu and MainSubMenus) If you click on one entry you can see the 'content' in the lower window. Scroll down and check if a line with
is there. If yes, the loop is 'technically' ok. If not, there is something wrong with your settings in GfD. In this case, please pack the GfD project file and the generated muxman.mxp file in a zip archive and post it here.
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 05:25 | ||||||||
Thank you for your response borax! :D
Ok so I open my VIDEO_TS.ifo in ifoedit...Then I klick on the VMGM_PGCI_UT (on the [+]) but then I don't see a PGC-Menu for EACH menu (like you said MainMenu and SubMenus) there is just one PGC 'file' named : "LU_1 (English) PGC-Menu_1"...if I click on this 'file' I get many lines in the lower window where I can see: Adress (begins at 00000002) Description Value (dec) and Value (hex) What am I doing wrong? Shall I post the entire project now? Cheers Michal
| borax posted 2008 Jul 03 06:10 | ||||||||
Ok. If you have only one MainMenu (withot submenus) then it's normal that there is just one entry. Titlesetmenus are in the other ifo files. Nevertheless if your MainMenu should be looping, you should find the line with the 1. Post command. Should look like this:
![]() | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 06:40 | ||||||||
yeah now I see it ... that's exactly what I can see as well: ![]()
| borax posted 2008 Jul 03 10:42 | ||||||||
| Then 'technically' it should loop ok. If it doesn't, there is probably something wrong with the audio file. If there is only one menu (here the MainMenu), it is even impossible that the menu plays the audio from a 'following' menu, as this would be in another vob file... | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 11:30 | ||||||||
| yeah I know... but that's exactly what's happening :(:(...shall I know post you some files? :( | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 11:40 | ||||||||
| OH! I have now solved that problem as well!!! My Fault again or just a really big coincidence...the thing was:
I had a audio nr.1 in menu nr.1 and then audio nr.2 in menu nr.2 but what showed up now was that audio nr.1 was an audio file that contained both audio nr.1 and audio nr.2 so my nr.1 menu audio looped properly but it was just two audio (in one) instead of just one :P Thank you all for all that help you have been given me...and that your answers were so fast! :D:D and borax GfD is a really really nice program I don't know what I would have done without it THANK YOU!!! YOU REALLY OWN!! :D Regards and BIG thanks Michal :D:D
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 12:16 | ||||||||
| Oh! Now when my whole project works fine there showed up that it's to big to be bruned on a DVD-R (4,7 GB) my project (the DVD-folder) is 4,49 GB large and the DVD is 4,38 GB :(:(
is there a way to make my project a bit smaller or will I be forced to split this project in two? While I converted my .avi which was 949 MB large to .mpeg, I got a new file which was 1,89 GB ... why does the size go up that much during the convertion? :( one thing that also is weird is that GfD shows that the project total size (in the left "folder window") is just 3998 MB...and when I check the size of the created VIDEO_TS the size is 4060 MB :shock:
| träskmannen posted 2008 Jul 03 12:41 | ||||||||
| You can use a double layer DVD. Another solution is to use DVDShrink to make the project smaller. | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 13:07 | ||||||||
yeah sure double layer but I don't need 8 GB DVD size but just my project a little bit smaller (300 MB) so I will try DVD Shrink then :D hm DVD Shrink just freezes when I try to open my project in it :S
| borax posted 2008 Jul 03 15:01 | ||||||||
| If it is elementary mpeg2 material (as you use MuxMan it surely is), you can also 'shrink' the video in GfD itself.
You can either set the shrink factor for each title individually or set a 'global' shrink factor which will be applied to all videos. Check it out here: http://download.videohelp.com/gfd/Help/VideoFileDialog.html An sorry, the algorithm to calculate the size has only an accuracy of about 1 or 2%. If I would calculate very accurate, it would take a lot of time which I try to avoid.
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 03 19:12 | ||||||||
| REALLY COOL!!! One more needed option in GfD that works perfectly :D:D...I'm sooo happy that I found your program...and once again congratulation ...you are making a really good job!!! :D
just one weird thing that occured to me is that while authoring with dvdauthor instead of muxman the videos are hacking sometimes during "fast action" (for example a car chasing)...but while using muxman it works great so nvm :D I have now burned my DVD and it works as it should !!! THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!! :D Thank you! Michal :D
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 04 02:30 | ||||||||
| ok so I have now successfully burned my DVD but when I open it at my DVD-player (TV) I see that the highlight color was to light (colors are always a bit different at my comp and at my TV...don't know why :S) ...and I had white as normal color...so the user don't see where he is standing (on which button). Can I change this in some way now or do I just need to burn the whole project again? | ||||||||
| borax posted 2008 Jul 04 02:44 | ||||||||
| > colors are always a bit different at my comp and at my TV...don't know why
That's normal. There are a lot of reasons for this 'mismatch' (different color space: RGB<>YUV, gamma correction...) > Can I change this in some way now On the finished DVD: No. In the ifo/vob files: Yes, with dvdsubedit or pgcedit and some others too. But if you are not familiar with these programs, it is probably easier to rerun the project in GfD... > with dvdauthor instead of muxman the videos are hacking sometimes This is a 'known' problem. Should be much better with the new version (coming soon...)
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 04 02:59 | ||||||||
| ok cool...nice that you are updating the GfD so often too :D...well nvm of the colors...they are light but that's not a big problem ;) the main thing is that the DVD works perfect!! :D
thanks Michal | ||||||||
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 04 10:34 | ||||||||
one more question about SubtitleCreator...why doesn't it read all types of subformats... when I try to open a .txt file which has this paticiular structure:
I got an error in SUbtitleCreator where it's written:
how do I convert this .txt to .sup then?! regards michal
| AlanHK posted 2008 Jul 04 11:22 | ||||||||
Well, that;s a weird format, It's not SRT:
No matter what format, (there are several) it needs a starting time and either a duration or an ending time. You seem to only have a start time. Subtitle Workshop can read and write most subtitle text formats, so give that a try. If you look at the tools it has you may be able to build an SRT file, using automatic duration say. But you will need to manipulate your text file somewhat, perhaps in Excel.
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 04 13:01 | ||||||||
| ah ok I didn't know that SubtitleCreator also needed a ending time ... At first I this format of subtitles {100}{200} Text... but I needed to synhronise them and I needed to convert them to "time" subtitles first...so I did that but I converted them wrong because I erased the ending time ... (dind't know I would need it later in SubtitleCreator...thank you it works now!!!!

That looks like the MicroDVD .SUB format. The two numbers here are the beginning and ending time, in frames, for displaying the subtitle. Subtitle Workshop can read that and convert it to a second-based format, like .SRT.
| michcio posted 2008 Jul 05 05:24 | ||||||||
| yeah that can SubtitleCreator as well :D and that's exactly what I have done :) | ||||||||

Check the fps of your video. Possibly you specified the wrong fps when converting from seconds.
The first line : {1}{1}23.976 is the fps. Usually 23.976. 29.97 or 25. Subtitle Workshop has an FPS setting on the left.

The subtitles was already in this format while I downloaded they. Because SubtitleCreator need a start AND an end position I can't convert my subtitles in this program...how do I do please help! I don't understand it either (ok, some more is due to audio, subtitles and mux overhead, but this should be considered by GfD as well). Have you used long or very complex animated menus? These are not considered in the size calculation (their size is not known before authoring). Could you post (or send by mail) the .gfd project file and the log file (please zipped!)? Concerning your subtitle format problem: I don't know this format either. But if you are (at least a little bit) familiar with a spreadsheet program (like Excel) you can easily convert it yourself to something suitable. I could help you with some more tips, but I can't explain how to use a spreadsheet program at all.

| Can you open the subtitles in Subtitle Workshop? Then there is an easier way than bringing the subs through Excel.
Try this: Open the subs in SubtitleWorkshop, select all (Ctrl+a or edit - select all). Go to edit - timings - automatic durations and play a bit with the options there - it will give you end times for all subtitles based on the length of the text. Save as .srt and use this .srt in SubtitleCreator.

ok so I have now downloaded Subtitle Workshop (didn't have this program before). When I open my .txt file in this program it outputs the end time directly! But then it gets weird when I try to save this subtitles. (Where do I find the .srt format? Custom format?).. for example wheen I try to save my subtitle as DVD subtitle it saves a file in .sub format but when I open this file it's very weird :S here is how it look like in the beginning (two first lines):
and the same ltwo lines of my subtitle in the beginning was:
I also tried to select all subtitles and set the automatic durations...and then save as .srt with the custom format and I get this result: two first lines again:
why does my output become so weird?? michcio

| and borax...I have also tried to fix my subtitles in excel (though I think träskmannen's method (using Subtitle Workshop) could be a lot faster).
But I wasn't abel to make it work: The first problem that occured was that when I just copy + paste my subtitles to excel the whole line was paste in one squere (for example A1) so A1 had the whole line "00:01:39:Tam jest jeszcze kilkoro." To fix that I made a program in java-language that read my whole subtitle file and saved two files ... one with only the time and one with only the text so as result I get two files where the first had this line "00:01:39" and the seconds first line was "Tam jest jeszcze kilkoro." Now when I copy + paste this two files into excel I got one column with the time and one with the Text. But now a second problem occured...to fix the "end time position" I tested to write =A1+10 in the top of next column (B1)...but my time wasn't saved as an int but as a String in excel so to fix that problem I would be forced to make one more complicated program.... It's where I read träskmannen's post which maybe seems a bit easier :P:P

| ...Yes my project have much of animated stuff...
That seems to be the cause. As I don't have your animation, I cannot check it. But you can roughly check it yourself: For the main menu, the 'additional' video for animated background is the file: Video_ts.vob. For each titleset the 'additional' video for animated background is the file Vts_XX_0.vob (where XX is the number of the titleset). If you add up the sizes for all these files what do you get? GfD just assumes 1 MB for a menu. I cannot calculate the sizes for the background animations in advance (their size is not known before encoding the animations and the final size is highly dependent on the content...). Sorry for this 'error' but I don't have a solution for animated menus. |
