| I purchased a SONY DVP-NS708H DVD player in Italy. Can this unit be unlocked to enable it to play US DVDs?

| Most Sony players are locked. They are either region free or they aren't. The few that can be hacked, often require special remotes/hardware. |

| I bought the same model but in canada. Tried to watch a region 2 dvd but it couldn't. Tried to hack using the codes provides in the dvd hacks section of this website but it didn't work. I used an Atlas 1055 universal remote control. The player responded when I pressed 1,2,3,4 and then 5 after having entered all the codes but the word «Success» never appeared when it woke up.
Can anyone help me? What did i do wrong? Is the remote i used the problem? Or is it because a region 1 dvd player cannot be hacked? Thank you for your help!! |

| sandyran - You may have done everything correctly. There are a couple of possibilities here.
1) Sometimes manufacturers change hardware during production and it breaks hacks that used to work. If this happens, someone will have to come up with a new hack for the model. There are no guarantees this will happen. 2) We have had reports of some DVD players that can be made region free, but the hacks only work on models sold outside of North America. Hollywood appears to have gotten to just about everybody to make the manufacturers stop producing DVD players that can easily be put into region free mode. At this time Samsung appears to not make a DVD player anywhere in the world that can be unlocked. The situation is getting grimmer every day for other manufacturers. I am completely mystified as to what exactly Hollywood is hoping to accomplish with this because the "solution" is simply going to be an increase in piracy. People will have no incentive to buy DVDs outside of their region and every incentive to find a ripped copy on the internet as once the region coding has been removed via ripping, the disc should play fine, not allowing for any failure on particular models to support PAL or NTSC (mostly a North American issue where lack of PAL support is possible). |
