Simple issue, cannot find program to do it..need to split AVI with a FF

I have hours and hours of AVI to split into many small clips. I do ATV riding with a helmet cam. Now I have endless gigs of avi and need to cut a few seconds here and there from several 2 hour clips. There are many programs that will cut them and I have a few and tried a ton. However, NONE have a fast forward button! So this leaves me to sit and watch at normal speed, hours of boooorrring video to find the one to two exciting clips I need to trim out. No can do, don't have the time to do that. Are there any avi trimming programs that have a fast forward button? I have tried to drag the scroll bar on many programs, but its not smooth and often will skip the nice ATV jump that only took 2-3 seconds since the slider bars often jump a second here and there. FF is just smoother than dragging a bar. Thanks all.

What format (Codec) is your video? AVI is just a container name and covers many, many codec combinations. Some formats do not FF well. :( You can drop one of the clips into MediaInfo or Gspot and post a screen shot of it here. Some codecs have keyframes widely spaced and you can only cut on a keyframe most times. Makes frame accurate editing very difficult. :( DV doesn't have that problem. And welcome to our forums. :)

I will use Pinnacle studio to do the job. It allows 2X and 10X FF to view the edited pieces. The program itself is not freeware. In addition, many people have horriable experiences with the program. So it probably also depends on your luck. I was lucky to be able to use the programs for years. Here is my flow for your situation. 1. Use "Any Video Converter" (which is free) to convert all the original pieces to mjpeg. - Select profile as "Customized AVI movie". - Select Video Codec as "mjpeg". - Select Frame size 720x480, framerate 29.976. - Select audio codec "pcm". Then, you can convert many pieces in batch mode in a single run. This will generate many big files, so that you need to make sure that you have enough disk space. 2. Use pinnacle studio to add each converted pieces in sequence. You can view the pieces with regular speed or at 2X or 10X speed to find out where you want to keep or cut. One final word about Pinnacle. This is a program with a bad reputation. I am one of a few lucky ones who do not have many problems for years. I started with Studio 7 many years ago. I then moved to Studio 8 and 9. Since Studio 9 is working for me for many years, I stay with it until now. I actually bought Stadio 10, 11, and 12. They are all free upgrade version after rebate. So I only paid sales tax for them. But since Studio 9 works fine for me, I never installed the latest upgrade. Since there are free upgrade available once for a while, the original version should not cost too much. But I have no idea how much it costs now. Good luck.

Must I convert the video or will penical studio work with the native file out of the camera which is M-JPG I think.

Did you try to load them in VirtualDub? You should be able to scrub very fast through the files and can cut out pieces. then save with "direct stream copy" to the same format without any loss.

Why do you need FF, if you can scrub with the slider fore- and backwards easily. Isn't it meant to to quickly find the parts you want to cut out ? I always use <Shift> and the left/right arrow keys as kind of a FB/FF. Then when I'm close use the arrow keys (without shift) to accurately find and mark the first/last frame of the section to cut out. Then press delete and off it goes. Should work fine with mjpeg.

I have lots of video files that are two hours long. I only need to find a few snips of like 5 seconds when people jump, slide, etc. So, I don't want to watch a two hour video real time to find only 20 seconds of stuff to keep. I have a lot of those 2 hour clips, not just one. I don't have days to sift through it for those few seconds. I don't know where they are in the videos, I have to watch the whole thing start to finish. I have found that when someone makes a good jump, it only is about 3-5 seconds long. So, when I use the slider bar, often, it is not smooth enough to always see those 3-5 second jumps and skips over them. I've tried the slider bar and it just isn't near as good as 2x or 3x playback which is smooth and easy to see those jumps on the ATV.

OK! I understand the problem. Perhaps someone still knows a player who can do it. But it must be a real FF, not by skipping frames. Probably decoding isn't fast enough for players to offer it ? EDIT: Isn't there trial available for Pinnacle Studio? But I doubt it can do what you need. I worked with it in the past and didn't found that option.

Media Player Classic has fast forward. No editing, but you could use it to locate your segments and note the times.

serpa4 : I dont see a way to FF in VD. Video/FrameRate. If your current rate is 30, change it to e.g. 120 to see 4x speed. If that's too jerky, try the "decimate" options, to show every 2nd, 3rd, whatever, ratio frame. Even every 10th frame is still 3 frames for each second of original video, so you shouldn't miss any scenes.

Hi serpa4, *Very* old skool, AVIUTL will do what you want - middle click the mouse scroll wheel and then you have a "floating" FF/REW just like you were scrolling through a document - the more you move the mouse left or right the faster or slower the speed. It's like an old video editing machine - think jog/shuttle dial. Hope that helps, Regards, Vent

Thanks, downloaded and playing, but cannot get FF. Unfortunately, only have a mouse pad and 2 buttons. Will source a mouse with a wheel and try it via usb. Thanks.
