Didn't work with North American version.

Thanks for testing it. Edited the first post

I was able to get this working with a serial cable. I had to modify vb6rocod files in order for hdmi and audio to work. If anyone needs help let me know. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR FIRMWARE FIRST.

I really like the new look and long filenames.

toolman2k8 posted 2008 Aug 21 15:06
this is great! however i need to wait until i receive my replacement for the player i bricked with a failed update :) so im kinda scared to upgrade...but how hard could it be, right?

a few questions:

- serial cable ? i didnt know it even had a serial connection? or did you open the box? if so, you're brave!
- i take it this is only needed for the us players, i could upgrade my 5990/12 normally?
- there are 2 files in the zip (1250/1252), which one should i use ?

Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 21 15:44
Yes, I had to open up the box and used 1252. My player was 5990/37 although after I flashed it now shows 5990/12. It's my understanding the hacked software is made for the 5990/12 but it still could cause you to brick your player. The link below shows a serial interface. The one I built is a lot simpler.

http://personal.inet.fi/cool/mediatek/programs/mtkdump.html

toolman2k8 posted 2008 Aug 22 02:04
interesting....is it possible to bring the player back to life using the serial method after a failed update ?

some more questions:

- you used the 1252, but how do i know which one i should use ?
- bricking your player is most likely with interrupting the upgrade i think ? i mean if the update gets done 100%, then the worst that can happen is experiencing some weird behaviour..or not ?
- is it possible to flash an official firmware after flashing this modded one ?

Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 22 02:38
Yes, usually the serial interface is the only way to fix a failed update. If you backup your firmware first you should be able to restore it to it's original state if you run into problems.

Here is a link to show you the process.

toolman2k8 posted 2008 Aug 22 02:56
ok cool. i think i might get started on that serial stuff then...always good to have a backup.

and:

- how do i know which one to use 1250/1252 ?
- instead of flashing my backupped firmware...i could also use an official philips one, right ?

Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 22 03:16
toolman2k8 :

My version is different than yours so I'm not sure. But it really doesn't matter. Try both it only takes a couple of minutes to flash and find out.

toolman2k8 posted 2008 Aug 22 03:22
ok great. did u make the cable yourself from scratch, used an existing(phone) one or buy one ?

buying a mobile phone cable and adjusting it seems more easy to me :) im not that a-technical, but i prefer easy solutions if possible.

if you used a mobile phone cable,which brand/version ?

Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 22 03:31
toolman2k8 :

This is when I needed my backup. When you flash using serial it erases the chip first. There is some additional information concerning HDCP, that I think is unique to each player, which was deleted during the flash. Basically, the HDMI stoped working. There is a easy work around I needed for my version that you shouldn't need. What I would do is make a serial interface to backup your firmware. Then flash the normal way (cd/usb). If it fails use your backup by way of serial.

A mobile phone cable would probably be easier. I used the max232 design but did away with the power tapping from the db9 port.

toolman2k8 posted 2008 Aug 22 03:40
ok thanks. so you mean you only use GND, TX, RX and NOT the V+, right ?

also, instead of soldering it to the pins, i think i could use socket like the ones used on connect cd-rom audio cables, right ? i think it fits on the pins......then i would have a cable that i could connect and disconnect easily.

Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 22 04:35
You need to get a soldering iron. Here is the amended schematic and photo.

toolman2k8 posted 2008 Aug 22 04:57
looks good. however, thats for the max232, right ? i will use a phone cable.....

i guess i will have to connect all 4, including the 5V+ to the right connections on the stripped phone cable, right? this is different from the link you posted earlier about the pioneer players, correct ?

There are many different ways to do the same thing. I had these parts laying around from a project several years ago. Other than the chart below I have no help I can give you on the phone cable.

So it looks we won't be getting a modded north american firmware folks. I asked vb6 numerous times and he said he only mods european firmwares to ask someone else. The others I asked never responded. So unless he has a change of heart or we do it ourselves, don't count on it being released

Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 23 06:22
I let vb6rocod know that it works on the 5990/37 with serial flash. His response was "I am in plan to mod original 5990/37/5992/37 (same firmware)". :D

I have a "checksum" problem, I fix this....

OK, so, where do we get the details of what is modded? Seems odd to old do one system since most things would be similar. A menu is a menu...

FredThompson,

I don't know if you're in the U.S. or not, but there's a list of the changes in the modded firmware for the U.S. version in the first post of this thread (I assume these are the same changes for the European Philips models). It also has a download link for the U.S. version if that's what you need:
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355675.html#1881697

I put it in on my spare 5990/37 a couple of days ago and have had no problems. I flashed it using the USB flash drive method they describe at Philips' site.

FredThompson posted 2008 Aug 28 00:05
Yes, I'm in the US. The list in the OP is a functional list, not the same as a breakdown of how those are accomplished inside. It's been a while since I worked with machine code and think any notes I can find will help.

Now I'm confused. I thought there wasn't an NTSC version of the modified firmware.

vb6rocod posted 2008 Aug 28 02:08
Change for European version 5990_12:

*new OSD font (text and graphic)
*new filebrowser (with scrollbars, outlined font, new icons)
*40 cahr for filelist, 44 char for DirList

*3 Mp3 TAG in filebrowser
*JPeg preview small size at bottom of file list

*move volume from bottom to a higher position.

*Patch "Title" as "GoTo"
*Autoload subtitle (avi)

*Patch subtitle area and subtitle window
*Patch subtitle color scheme (use normal fonts)
*fix "1 sec. srt. bug"
*4 fonts for subtitle (Standard, Small, Medium and Large)
*DVD Quick Play. I replace DivXSubtitle from "Preference Page" with new, named "DVD-Video" with two option "With menu" and "Without menu".
*All avi (Mpeg4) menu are in "General Page". You can change fonts or color when movie is played.
*4 fonts for subtitle (Standard, Small, Medium and Large).
*2 color for subtitle.I use text from OSD Language and new menu is "Colour" with 2 option: "Default" - white and "Cool" - yellow.
*WordWrap + Reformat.

Add version for all CP (code page) 1250,1251,1252,1253,1254

Yes, I play PAL stuff on my American model. Most plays fine but I have a DivX which plays at 1:1 aspect ratio. That is an internal conversion, though.

I was confused until the thread at http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355675.html was shown to me. I see that is your firmware for NTSC.

Earlier in this thread the comments were that such a firmware was not coming out so I thought to start looking at machine code and work on it myself. Now, I don't think that is necessary. Am I correct?

FredThompson posted 2008 Aug 28 02:44
Would it be a good idea to set the firmware rev number the same for both European and American versions when they are the same?

FredThompson posted 2008 Aug 28 02:48
ignore

vb6rocod posted 2008 Aug 28 05:50
To see what version you have, power player, open tray and press "55". You will see version (5990_37 , 5990_12 or else).

Hi vb6rocod,

First of all greetings from Czech republic. And now my questions:

1) Would it be possible to add support for white subtitles outlined with black and without grey background? (CP-1250)

2) And it is possible with current firmware to move subtitle area to the lower part of picture? I suppose that it is not possible to move subtitles under the picture (with wide-angle movies). Am I right?

Thank you for your answers and especially thank you for your great job with 5990 firmware improvements.

I wish a bit more comfortable browser window, meaning there are just 3 or 4 files to see and then you have to scroll already in order to see the rest of files/folders... Is there a way to make smaller fonts in browser window or just to put them closer one to another so that you can have at least 6-7 files/folders per page to see ?

I try to make with 6 files but no success, space is used now for 3 MP3 TAG and jpeg preview.
Also, you can use "prev" and "next" buttons as "Page Up" and "Page Down".

It is possible to change some remote control button (usual Repeat and Repeat AB) to VOL + and VOL - .I make this for other Philips player.

2. Audio preference is despite otherwise selected always English. I'm not 100% sure but also subtitles preference is not working.

Seems like USB-mode can play media player files (they`re just vob-files
without iso & udf structure).
Great, now I can build 1 big seamless vobfile without that break,

Should this patch give more options to that? And the last question is: how do you update to this firmware? Any link to description?

Hi,

terrific firmware! I really like the feature to directly start the movie. It was absolutely anoying to always wait (if "Next" was blocked) until finally the menu screen showed up and then you most of the time had to wait again since they take ages to finish. So again: Thanks very very much!

One thing though: I have a couple of DVD's (for example: Replicant) where the german subtitle are shown mandatory. You can nevertheless go into Setup and see possible other subtitels (including "None") but if you choose it, it will be ignored.
The feature with showing subtitles as transparent seems to work only in DivX movies.
Do I miss something? It would be perfect if a switch to "None" with the mandatory subtitles would also work. I checked if they can be removed with a normal Encrypter program and it was no problem there, so they are not "imprinted" in the movie itself.
Can you do some more of your magic?

Best Regards!

Nothing to do on DVD...or I don't know how... But if you press "subtitle" button what's happening ?

Hi,

thanks for taking the time to answer. Yes, I know, I am one of the few nearly extinct people who actually buy movies they like
The problem is, NOTHING happens. It is as if you do not changed anything at all. You choose any entry from the following list and then it returns to the menu with no changes.
Something simmilar happens with audio btw. Example: X-Files, any season, but there you cannot even choose from arbitrary audio; only from the menu. Also the subtitles can only be chosen in the main menu.
If you see ANY way to do this, this would be great. It is really a shame that you can achive something easier with downloading files than by acutally buying the DVDs you like. :(

Best Regards

This firmware has nothing do with subtitles on DVD's. It only effects subtitles on Divx files. You will need to search elsewhere to find a solution to your problem.

No, it's OK. I'm accustomed to European CP (Western is 1252), but basic latin alphabet is common in all (US/English).

Greek use CP 1253. See more here http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355440-30.html#1895087.
Download and use version for CP 1253 (Greek subtitles for avi).

Hello, Tripper_

I had a bad firmware upgrade, and my player came back to life with a serial cable and MKTTool.

But now I have no HDMI, because of no HDCP block on my firmware. And I didn't make a backup of the full firmware before.

Is there any way to have the HDMI alive again?

Since I live in Brazil, and the player was bought in the US, returning the player on the store is not an option.

Thank's in forward,

Eduardo

This should get you going again. You need to flash using MtkTool. Let me know if it works.

You give me some hope... but no.
I read more, and this model has a hardware decoder + 5.1 outputs. The firmware is the same like 5990, so the problem is not soft.... too bad.

I don't know if this is the right section to post a question about 5990.
I read that this player does not support DTS audio by the analogic output.

My question is: if I use the coaxial output and an external DTS decoder, I can listen the DTS audio tracks?
I have the creative ddts-100 and i'd like to use it as decoder.

Thanks for your help

Techflaws posted 2008 Nov 04 01:14
This should work since the signal is transferred digitally over coaxial and the Creative supports DTS.

D'oh! You can install the firmware from USB just fine! It has nothing to do with the fact that after flashing the hacked firmware (from whatever medium) the filebrowser won't display more than 25 chars if you playback files from USB and 40 from disc.

Some change:

- new position for vertical, lower position for "Large" font. Also first 10 step are with 4px/step, last with 6px/step. This can usefully for custom zoom from TV (Zoom1 or cine), special for users with Plasma TV. Maxim is now 72px (level 16).
- full support for unicode (ISO+Joliet and USB) for all CP. (Thanks to shoora).
- a bigger font for "Large" for CP 1253 and 1254 (Thanks to MTZ)
- move subtitles a little to left
- Volume + - on Repeat keys.
- For "Dark Grey" background is "semi-transparent"
- All language in OSD Language

Hi,

I just upgraded to the latest 5990/12 (1252) version. The upgrade went very well and I like the new layout very much.

However I'm a bit disappointed by the recognized codecs.
Quite a bit of the newer avi-files out there are in h.264 codec and this player with the latest firmware can't seem to play these (codec is not supported).

Are there any plans on making a firmware that also support the h.264 codec ? (I don't know if this can even be fixed with a new firmware but I'm just asking here ^_^)

Other then that the player and new firmware are great... it's just a shame that many of my files are still not suported:'(

Kind regards,

Yes, h.264 is not supported (hardware). For this you need a "Media Player" and add a "0" to price....

bottom posted 2009 Jan 03 10:45
@ saintbe
1) the player can handle only non-HD input formats (720x576)
2) to support h264 (or any other compatible HD format) you probably need a hardware upgrade !
=> thus a new firmware will VERY VERY likely not/never add support for this codec (on the dvp 5990)
sorry

@ all
using latest firmware (CP 1252) i have the following problems
and was wondering if it's just me (=user error), a player problem
or possibly firmware-related ...
1) the MUTE button on the remote doesn't work at all, neither for DVD nor Xvid
2) the last volume setting is NOT stored. after turning the player off/on its on maximum level again (=20) !!!
3) when playing back DVDs or Xvid files (and maybe other formats as well)
the first few seconds (1-2s) of the audio is missing/muted out

@ vb6rocod
thx for the GREAT firmware, you really should charge philips for it !!! :)
but...
personally i don't have a philips receiver/tv
and i really would like to use the default volume buttons on the remote (for several reasons).
of course i don't want to force this as a default setting to all users
but maybe this could be added as a menu-point in the setup
or released as a separate (sub-)firmware version...

thx in advance

Well, you should have read the feature list from the 5990 product page before buying the player.

2) according to Philips support it's not a bug, it's a feature
3) Nice to see someone else having these kinda problems, although I'm getting this only with mp3 playback

Solution: pester Philips support about it (I did) so they see it's a common issue and release a fix for it.

@vb6rocod

Thx for the fast reply. I suspected as much...
I guess I'll just save some money for the Markus 800 mediaplayer.

@Techflaws

I bought the device in a fast decision... they were selling very fast... So I took a risk and payed 80euros for this box. The fact that it says "1080p" on the box is a bit deceiving in my opinion. I read the feature list on the internet when I was at home... the local salesmen weren't very helpful in telling me what the 1080p was all about... YES, I asked them what the 1080p on a DVD-player was for ?_?

@ALL

This is a very nice DVD player but in my opinion isn't better than the other DivX players out there (that you can get for 30-40 euros) ... the "1080p and ideal for your HDTV" advertisement on the box is a kinda deceiving because the device does not support this for video and for me personaly is a useless feature if it's only usable for JPEG. Oh well ... I needed a new DVD player anyway so it's not a total waste.

Thx for the fast replies everyone.
K.

Techflaws posted 2009 Jan 04 01:25
The player does upscale standard resolution to 1080p so one can watch DVDs on Flatscreens. I wouldn't call that deceiving.

Is there any chance to speed it up?

When a press EJECT from STAND BY mode it takes 11 sec until the player is open, why (It's the same with the original firmware)?
(I'm used to my old player, a Pioneer DV-444. That one was fast to start and to open)

Can someone post screenshots on every version of backgrounds "CD logo" "Divx logo" "Philips logo" "Vista logo" so i don't have to flash my drive just to see how it looks.

Great work by the way...
