This one is just so odd that if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I'd never believe it.
I do a lot of temporary burns onto DVD-RWs with episodes of TV shows. For this I have a default menu with a background bitmap and I manually set the font to Tahoma, Bold Oblique, 24 point each time. Most times each disc ends up with three or four episodes. Occasionally it's just the one episode but either way I align all of the text 'buttons' vertically (if there's more than one) then use the centre horizontally and centre vertically buttons to put everything in the middle of the 16:9 frame.
Yesterday I tried doing this with a single episode and SVCD2DVD crashed during the Encoding Menu phase. The whole program just disappeared, interface and all. At first I thought this must be a problem with the video itself so I tried trimming the temporary MPG file and trying again, but it still crashed. Then I tried obtaining another copy of the *ahem* 'source' AVI and started again. Still it crashed.
This could have continued all day but during one of the many attempts I accidentally forgot to set the font to Tahoma, Bold Oblique 24 and SVCD2DVD reported success. Not quite able to believe how a font setting could upset the disc creation I tried again with the font set how I normally do things, and it crashed.
I tried again with the almost the same settings but with the font set to 26 point. The disc was created successfully. Then I tried again with a different font. Success. Then I set it for Tahoma, Bold Oblique 24 but added an extra character to the episode title. Success. Finally I tried the original title, Tahoma Bold Oblique 24, but offset the button from exact centre. Incredibly, it succeeded again. Just to make sure I wasn't going nuts I put everything back the way it was with the button centered, and it crashed.
There must be a unique combination of character length, font size, button position and possibly the background bitmap that's causing an internal problem for SVCD2DVD or one of the other programs whose functions it calls. I'm attaching a couple of log files, one from a successful run with the menu text offset and another from a bad run with the text centred.
Hopefully someone here can translate these log files better than I can and help come up with an explanation. The only difference I can see is in the HERE WE GO EVE.ODD section where the 'bad' configuration leads to a couple of zeroes while there aren't any in the 'good' configuration. I don't know exactly what's going on here but zeroes where there shouldn't be generally don't bode well in computing!
As you can see, the final line of the 'bad' log shows a missing temporary file. I'm guessing it's this that's causing SVCD2DVD to fall over, but it would be nice to know exactly what the mechanism is that's leading to it. The workaround is obvious -- if it crashes, move the text and try again -- but I abhor mysteries. In many years of using this program with these or very similar settings this is the first time I've seen such a thing happen.
