| can anyone suggest a dvd recorder that will play divx files from a usb pen

| DVD recorders are vanishing in North America, so I can't give specific model numbers, but Philips probably still makes some in the EU that can play Divx. Philips DVD recorders were highly regarded here. Do note that some Divx/Xvid encoding options can be problematic for any DVD player:
