Playback of MTS files (Canon HF series) using WesternDigitalHD Media Player

frmsuv2van posted 2009 Sep 02 09:41
Hello,
I found out that I can simply drag and drop the .mts files from my Canon HF200 to an external WD harddrive (my passport essential) and the Western Digital HD Media Player can play them. This is convenient since I don't need to rely solely on the Canon camcorder for playback to the TV.

However, the multiple mts files (multiple clips) will be seen by the media player as multiple movies. For continuous playback of all the clips, I want to merge/join the multiple .mts files into one single .mts file so that the WD Media Player can play all the clips that I have recorded (one or 2 hours worth of clips) continuously.

I tried TSMUXER program to join/merge the files to no avail (maybe I didn't use it correctly). (note: I don't want any encoding/decoding/converting format; I just want the output file to be .mts format)

Has anyone here used the Western Digital Media Player to play the mts files? If so, any elegant solution for continous playback?

Thanks.

TSMUXER is the correct program to use for joining .mts files. Just add files, in the Input tab, in the order you want them joined and the output will be one large .m2ts file. The WD Media player will play this perfectly.

I am not sure of this but I think if you put the individual .mts files into a separate folder on the drive attached to the WD player it will read your files in the order they are in the folder. This works with .vob files.

However if you always want them to be read as one file then try TSMUXER again

Thanks for your reply.

I couldn't find a TSMUXER user guide to understand what to do. In the Input portion I was able to JOIN the .mts files. The output section, I am not sure what to select in the drop-down fields (tabs). I don't remember seeing .mts or .m2ts anywhere. I did recall seeing .ts format, however. I chose HD Video (because I don't know what else should I choose from the drop-down field), then I clicked on the left button (DEMUX?) (the right button is CREATE META FILE?). The output file is an .264 file with an audio file of .ac3

What are the exact steps in TSMUXER to produce a single output file in .mts format or .m2ts format?

Thanks for the specifics.

From what I have read online, .mts is associated with AVCHD. you will notice that TSMUXER has an AVCHD option for output

I finally was able to merge/join the multiple .mts files into one single .m2ts file so that the WD HD Media Player can play a collection of clips continuously.

Basically in TSMUXER, I ADDed the first file, then JOINed the rest of the .mts files (clips) (one at a time as TSMUXER doesn't allow me to grab multiple files all at once), then chose the M2TS MUXING method, then clicked on START MUXING. It's that simple.

Thanks

To add to that, if you have all the clips in a folder, you can press Enter on the remote to play a single clip, or you can press Play to play the files continuously (as noted by thegman45).

If they are one single movie separated into parts (like VOBs on a DVD), the you would need to join them so that there are no breaks between clips. If you simply want to watch all of the clips without having to select each clip after playing, then just hit Play.

I have a problem with using TSMUXER to join the .mts files into one .m2ts file.
When playing back the .m2ts file on the WDTV the audio is out of sync. I have ben told that
this is because the audio and video are actually different lengths in each .mts file and so
the audio is knocked out of sync when joining. What can I do?
Also WDTV does play back each .mts file sequentially when "play" is hit. But with an annoying
2 to 3 second gap between. Which makes 'muxing' very attractive. help! Thank you.
