Philips DVP642/37: Straight answer on external subtitles!!!

jservs7 posted 2004 Dec 15 16:52
I have been looking on numerous websites on the external subtitle issue (Including this one) but I can't seem to create a straight answer. Here's what Ive done so far:

I got the latest firmware for my Philips DVP642/37 player (Ver. 1109), I am trying to burn my movie files (DIVX or XVID) with Nero Express using data format. I am using 4x DVD-R Ridata discs when burning my files and I have tried burning my movie files with the .sub & .idx together and separate, but I can not get the subtitles to work. The files are the exact same name as the movie file. (Example: movie.avi, movie.sub & movie. idx) When I go to the DISC MENU option on my dvd player, it shows the movie file and another movie file of the same name. (Shows them as MPEG4 & MPEG3 files) I tried playing both movie files, but none show subtitles. I tried using the SUBTITLE button while selecting each file in the DISC MENU screen, but that does not work either. Can someone tell me a definitive way how to do this? Its like all I find are opinions and no clear cut answer.

Use srt text subtitles instead. Download from www.extratitles.to or convert the sub/idx to srt with subrip or vobsub.

Sorry if this is a bother, but would you be so kind as to give a quick example on how to convert my .sub & .idx files into .srt files with these tools? :D

Load .idx file with SubRip, run OCR with it, save as .srt, done.
