| 3 questions:
1. Is there a "normal" way to update player with this firmware meaning via burned CD or something like that, or we must use these serial cable-open box-patch wires procedures mentioned in previous posts ??? 2. When updated is there possibility to patch the player back to its default firmware ??? 3. What's the difference between "White" and "Yellow" versions of the firmware??? TIA
| vb6rocod posted 2008 Aug 25 01:13 | ||||||||||
1. Update normal, from USB or CD 2. Yes, you can return to original firmware. 3. White --- white subtitles with black outline (for avi file), yellow --- yellow subtitles with black outline.....

| I've updated firmware on my pc dvd writers but haven't patched a standalone since my old Apex DVD player and that's long ago erased from memory so need more info on how it's done.
Anyone tried this one? If so, how exactly did you patch the player and which model do you have?
| Tripper_ posted 2008 Aug 25 03:38 | ||||||||||
| Remove any disk from unit. Turn the dvd player off and insert a usb thumb drive with file. When you turn the unit on you will be asked to update. Wait for the process to finish do not interrupt. To burn a cd you could use nero. I think philips web site gives you direction when you down load firmware.
If you have a North American version 5990/37 there's no patching needed.

| I just flashed my 5990 and this mod works great. The splash screen is better than the stock version!
Long filenames are seen. The scroll bar on the right is wonderful. Extended characters are shown. Fantastic. I'm still not sure how to use the "disc menu" button on data discs. Pushing it while a video file is playing displays the universal "no" symbol in the upper left. Is there a filename or other method to force the player to return to the file list?
| Squash posted 2008 Aug 29 03:22 | ||||||||||
| FredThompson,
To return to the file list, hit the "Stop" button. When it displays "Press Play Key to Continue", just hit the "Stop" button again and that will take you back to the file list. There may be another way, but that's what I use. I think the "disc menu" button is just for video DVDs.

| Hi there, I'll test this firmware
But I have some cuestions 1, what means *fix "1 sec. srt. bug" 2, Most important, This one doesn't disable HDMI support right¿? 3, it is possible in a future version to slowdown or speedup subtitles? 4, is s possible in a future version too to fast forward every 10min or so "like dvd chapters" an avi file? thanks in advance
| vb6rocod posted 2008 Sep 02 15:37 | ||||||||||
1. "1 sec srt bug". If you use a avi + srt (subtitle), a sub with time like 0:00:00,123 --> 0:00:00,789 will not show (cut milliseconds). That's a short explanation. 2. I don't disable or enable any HDMI support (and I don't know how to do this). 3. No 4. You have "GoTo", press "Title" two times and enter "h:mm:ss" to jump in avi file (this is a patch, not in original firmware).

| You got me. Resistance is futile! :)
This firmware works great! :D I'm in Canada but I have a bought in the USA 5990/37 so I used the v1_1 file from the first link posted above. I copied the "white" bin file by itself to a 64mb fat16 usb thumb drive. I removed any disc from the player and shut it off, inserted the usb drive, turned the unit on and pressed the "usb device" button on the remote. The player posted a message that it recognized the update file and another message that it was "updating" (it might have said upgrading but who can remember?). It felt longer but in about a minute or 2 the screen switched to a nice blue background and re-sensed the usb and asked if I wanted to update again. I shut the player and removed the usb. I turned the unit on and inserted a disc with divx avi files and wow!! How great to see such a fantastic menu background with much improved long file name browser. I tried the goto option and it works. The goto a time option was a feature of the dvp-642 and I missed it with this player. I like the new display buttons too. :) Fantastic job! Easy to read clear text. :) Thanks vb6rocod for making this and Tripper_ for posting it here

| THis modification is great! Thanks vb6rocod!! It must have taken a significant amount of thought, time, expertise and talent. Not to mention the good will to offer it to the public for free. Many Thanks!
I leave a WD250 drive hooked up 24/7 to the 5990. This drive is powered by the USB port. Is this good practice? The blue light on the drive stays on but I cannot figure out if the drive is spinning? Is there a way to cut the power to the USB port when the philips is powered down? Other than manually numbering the videos on the hard drive (and modifying all the numbers every time you add a movie)the numbers every time you add a movie), does anyone have a slick way of utililzing the "go to" feature to go to a specific video?

Questions/Requests: 1) Is there a way to turn off the . and 3-letter file extension? The icon is nice and there's no reason for this added clutter which is really a computer data, not a video data as far as the DVD player is concerned. 2) Is it possible to change aspect ratio while playing? I've noticed some SD 4:3 files are playing square; 3:3 3) Is it possible to ignore the Recycled directory on a USB device? 4) Can the player read Volume ID? That would be a great way to title menus.

| First off, thank you so much for taking the time with this firmware!
Found bug: In v1.2 when you press "Title" to get "Go To" and "Setup", the "-:--:--" is nearly blacked out. It looks like dark gray on black. v1.1 was white on black and easy to see. Edit: It seems to depend on AR. The issue above was found using 2.35 AR content. When using 16:9 or 4:3 it depends on color of video in background. Either way v1.1 seems easier to read IMO. Feature Request Add a "cut out block" where "Go To" and "Setup" are displayed. Tested on DVP-5992/37 North American unit. All else looks good, thanks again!

On some movies, the movie kept flashing white screen in between the movie scenes, and the audio get messed up. The movies are broken up in to 1GB VOB files. | I just noticed something dangerous with the logo page. I was playing audio discs and had an HDMI LCD connection on for a few hours. The bright whites of the logo page created a burn in the screen which took a while to remove.
My requests: 1) More files listed (8 or so, as mentioned previously) - try playing a DVD with 40+ titles... 2) A logo page without the bright white. Blue doesn't seem to be a problem. The issue seems to be the high luminance.

First of all, many thanks for your fantastic mod and your generousity to make it available for public use. I have some questions, if I may. 1. I get a Video resolution error when playing a high resolution DivX file (more than 720). I suppose this can't be fixed with firmware but I figured I'll ask anyway. 2. Is there a "resume play" feature where you can stop playing a DviX file and play back to the scene where you left off without having to fast forward all the way from beginning? I had an old DVP5960 model which had this feature in modified firmware so I'm wondering if it's possible for this model as well. Thanks a million!!!

| If you have the know-how, I would like to request that PAL and MULTI be restored to the TV TYPE menu in your unofficial firmware (unless someone knows a remote control hack to switch TV Types).
As the "struck-through" post earlier in the thread mentions, Philips have "forced" their American players to be NTSC-only for the last year or so. On my old 5982, I was able to find a remote control hack to at least make the player MULTI (you open the tray and press the "3" on the remote. You'll see MULTI in the upper-left corner). When I try this hack on my 5990, it simply says NTSC. Only thing I can think is Philips thought that hack was too easy to do and changed it to something else? Any way you can put MULTI and PAL back in the TV TYPE menu (or point me to a remote hack that will at least enable MULTI)? I even tried upgrading to official foreign firmware (downloaded the Australian one) and changed the file's name to make my player accept it. Firmware installed, but it still behaves like a US player (with NTSC being the only selectable option). I had bought the 5990 for its USB 2.0, but since I plan to get an LCD TV in a few years, and plan to shop around for one that is multi-standard (I know they're not common, but among LCDs, you can find some PAL-capable ones out there without having to go to an multi-system specialist), I may just buy another 5982 so that my PAL DVDs won't be forced to undergo an unnecessary standards conversion.

I just tried out this firmware, and it's very good. I wonder if it is possible to make the following enhancements: - Is there a way to add a "shuffle" mode for Music/Video files. Surprised that it's not there. You may also want to have a "folder" shuffle mode that does a shuffle for files in the current folder. - According to the following link: hxxp://www.forodvp5100.com.ar/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1543 (Change hxxp to http to view the page) it mentions that you can press the ANGLE key to change the effect when viewing JPEG pictures. Oh, yes, I was aware of that, I just remember on my 5982, there was a remote hack/shortcut that enabled me to switch the player into MULTI mode (bypassing the TVTYPE menu) and that for some reason, Philips decided to remove this (or reassing it to another key combo?) in the 5990. Of course, having it in the TVTYPE menu (where it really belongs) is preferable anyway!
Many, many thanks! I will try this out tonight on my multi-system TV. I know there's another poster lurking around who was wanting such a modification for his 5992. Can he use the same firmware file you provided above (maybe he'd just have to change the file's name to match his player?). I'm thinking of the guy who struck-through his message in this thread. I should be possible too, because 5990 firmware has (limited) support for LFN entries of VFAT and FAT32, which is UNICODE. There must be some place to hook up unicodeToCP function. However, it is possibile that mediatek just ignores upper portion of unicode character.

You have right, I make this "patch", you may check this in 5990_37, it's for 1252, and for this case most "special char." are like 0x00ab and position in table is 0x00ab. For 1251 unicod is 0x04ab but position in char table is 0x00cd (cd <> ab). And it's true (i check this) for usb high byte is ignore and for this reason you get "strange" char. from usb. This patch was original make by Vladimir Boroda, a "guru", who make firmware for 5960 (also make his famous ISO resume).

vb6rocod, correct me if I'm wrong, but this poster should simply be able to use your 5990 firmware, right? I think all he'd have to do is simply change the file name from 5990_37.bin to 5992_37.bin, right? (I thought I read somewhere that both players use the same firmware). If this is the case, the only thing you need to put on the CD is that .bin file (and renamed to reflect your different model number). It's not necessary, 5990 and 5992 (37 or 37b) use the same firmware 5990_37.bin, so use 5990_37.bin for your player. I think it's more a case of your VCR allowing the DVD player to "play through", not a function of the DVD player itself. Some VCRs are smart enough to allow the DVD player to play back, just as long as you don't hit the "record" version. There are other VCRs that are "dumb" and screw up the picture whether you're trying to record or not. So, unless you've applied some sort of "VCR hack" to your 642 (didn't think there were any for Philips machines), then you should probably be fine with the 5990.

If you have 5990_37 use firmware for 5990_37 (logic)...see version for 1251 (Cyrillic for avi subtitles). If you use HDMI doesn't matter NTSC or PAL (this option is also disable in setup).

| Thanks for the firmware, it rocks! I used one for codepage 1251.
One thing which came out was that in order to see russian subtitles you have to select "Subtitle Language=Polish" from Preferences Setup screen. There was no "Russian", but Polish setting worked. Original default setting is to "English", and it would not show cyrillic subtitles, only garbage chars. Hope this helps others.
| PixelaseR posted 2008 Oct 21 09:50 | ||||||||||
Well, I've had problem playing DVD+R DL from both GQ and Philips. They all have this nasty 10 second pauses all over the 2nd half of the playback. Also, I've checked the manual as well as a few other resources, none of which says this unit support DL playback. Kind of hope maybe vb6 can add better support to DL playback. Welp :P
| Tripper_ posted 2008 Oct 21 10:07 | ||||||||||
Thats not going to happen. It's either the media or burner your using. Verbatim is the only DVD+R DL thats really any good.
| Supreme2k posted 2008 Oct 21 14:45 | ||||||||||
| I have a few DVD players, and have bought quite a few over the year, but I have never seen the manual or box specifically show support for DVD-DL. I believe the DVD spec accounts for DL, so it may be redundant to list it. I burn DL regularly (both + and -) and they all work flawlessly in the 5990/37 (I have 2 of them). | ||||||||||

| PixelaseR posted 2008 Oct 21 21:24 | ||||||||||
Hmm...well, my burner's a Optiarc AD-7173A (Sony) and I used both GQ (Rich JPN) and Philip DVD+R DL discs. Both of which has massive pauses. At first I thought it was my burn, but then the discs played perfectly with my RCN player. That's why it leads me to think it might be this player that doesn't actually support DL discs. To be sure, I did contact Philips and the reps told me it isn't supported. Go figures.
| redwudz posted 2008 Oct 21 22:09 | ||||||||||

Guess I ain't the only one :) But seriously, I think it has something to do with the software used. I've used Nero, ImgBurn, Alcohol, CloneCD AND CloneDVD. All of them gave me nasty pauses all over the 2nd half of the disc. It's totally annoying. Some of the discs even freezes like 3/4 of the way. Kinda hard to believe that this is a media problem.

| vb6rocod posted 2008 Oct 30 17:45 | ||||||||||
| It's not about fonts, it's about width. A "normal" line of subtitles have 43-45 char.
You can test with MTKFontCreator (a free, visual and very easy to use program), witch font can be used. I test most windows fonts and only few can be used. Arial narrow is the best. A line have ~ 640px. Set outline to 2px and space between char. to 0. On my tv (26") I use a font with 43px height. If you have a big tv you can use a smaller font (30-35px). For Turkish I make this version (for /37 model). http://rapidshare.com/files/158491913/DVP5990_37_vb6_v1_2_1_CP1254.rar.html Or for DVP5996K_51 http://rapidshare.com/files/159158819/DVP5996K_51_vb6_v1_2_1_1254.rar.html

The latest version that I know of for the 5990/37 USA player is linked to from this post: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355675-30.html#1887508 The two files are in a rar archive on Rapidshare. I like to use hub printable media and Verbatim doesn't offer a hub printable DL. I keep trying various other brands and all have this issue. I have used 3 different burners, the latest being the Samsung SH-S203B and all have the same problem. The freezing issue is even worse when placing the break at a specified cell. I have the best results when burning at 1x and not manually placing the layer break.

| What is latest modified firmware for US 5990/37? | ||||||||||
| would_like_to_know posted 2008 Dec 03 22:20 | ||||||||||
I got the 5990/37 unit recently from Amazon. I am using the above firmware, and the features are fantastic! Thanks for great work, guys! The only trouble are fonts in the file menu (blue? with a thin yellow line around), they blend with the blue background and are hard to read for the files which are not selected by the cursor. But it ain't big deal, I can live with that. Now, here is a request for a possible feature. Say, I rip a DVD I own onto HD as a bunch of files (VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, etc.). When I open this directory on 5990, I only see *.VOB files, and none of the other ones. With PowerDVD under Windows, I can play the VTS_01_0.IFO file, and get the menus and scene selection. With only the *.VOB files in Philips 5990, it is all continuous play, and navigation is difficult. Is there any possible way for 5990 to read the *.IFO file from a hard drive, and then play *.VOB files according to the menu selection, as if it was a DVD? These functions must be used for a DVD play, but they are not used when a copy of a DVD file structure is present on HD in some directory. This feature would allow to just rip a bunch of DVDs to HD into a nice library, and play them will all the features while the actual DVDs are peacefully sitting on the shelf. Tip of the day: If you guys have troubles formatting a new HD with FAT32 in Windows, use this command line program "mkdosfs" : http://www1.mager.org/mkdosfs/ Basically, you can specify sector size with that, as in : mkdosfs -v -F 32 -s 32 -n Seagate J: So with "-s 32" you get sectors of 16KB (32x0.5KB), just make sure your allocation table does not get too big (>10Gb), or the access will become slow.
| Techflaws posted 2008 Dec 03 23:45 | ||||||||||
No.
Or take the easy way and use FAT32format.exe.

So this version: 5990_37_vb6_v2_1.rar http://rapidshare.de/files/40999850/5990_37_vb6_v2_1.rar.html is the best currently to use with the 5990/37 us player? We just purchased a new one last night, since our old phillips just died. One thing we saw VERY odd.. maybe someone has seen mention of it elsewhere, is it played fine last night. we turned everything on this morning, and only the red and green color guns were being displayed from the player. Unplugging it and re plugging it in cured that issue, But I'm concerned we got a defective unit. (The store still has a dozen in stock.. should I get a replacement just in case?) I don't want to flash upgrade what might possible be a bad unit. Also is there a faq thread anywhere for this player?
| redwudz posted 2008 Dec 04 14:37 | ||||||||||
| What cables are you using to the TV? Sounds like component (3 video cables) You may just have a bad cable. If not, maybe exchange.
That sounds like the right flash upgrade. It improves the look of the interface considerably. :) Not aware of any guides, but there may be one out there.
| Gareee posted 2008 Dec 04 14:43 | ||||||||||
| It's an hdmi cable, and I've been using it on our old dvd player now for about a year and a half without any issues.
Seems like unpluggng the player and plugging it back in wouldn't fix a cable issue, unless sit was bumped, but the electrical plug is no where near it. Since I got it at walmart anyway, I'll flash it, and if it acts up again, just return it for a replacement. BTW, to flash with a flash drive, you just drop the file in the main root of the drive, plug it in, and then turn the player on, correct? (Only flashed from burned discs in the past) VB mentions resetting the player... how is that done? unplugging it and plugging it back in?
| redwudz posted 2008 Dec 04 14:58 | ||||||||||
| If it's a HDMI cable, and in good condition, it may be a player problem. :( HDMI connections using HDCP can also cause problems, but I don't think it would be with the colors. It just wouldn't display.
I don't have a 5990 here at present, so not sure about a reset. When you plug in the USB drive, the player should see it right away and recognize the flash update and offer to install it. Very simple. When the flash has finished, turn off the player and remove the USB drive or it will want to flash it again on power up. You can re-install the original firmware, but you would need a copy of it. :( Check with Philips, it may be available. I would be hesitant on returning the player with modified firmware. :(
| Gareee posted 2008 Dec 04 15:09 | ||||||||||
| Yeah my concern as well, but since walmart's return policy is pretty liberal, I'm not too concerned about it.
I'm pretty sure I've already downloaded the most recent official firmware, so I could reflash it, unless of course the unit dies completely.

Again, unplugging it and plugging it back in resolved the issue, but I'm exchanging it today, because obviously it has some problem. It would also make sense to have the info on the latest firmware in the 1st post, since otherwise one has to scroll through several pages of stuff to see what is the latest.
Nonetheless, why cannot it read *.IFO files ? I would think that most of the code for it should already be present in one form or another in the player, it just that it is not being used in this context. Anybody with the in-depth technical knowledge of the matter cares to chime in ? Thanks!

Legal reason: the owner of the DVD license does not allow playback of the Video-DVD format from anything else than a DVD. Technical reason: DVDs address UDF sectors referenced in the ifos, HDDs don't use an UDF filesystem so at least mapping would be necessary. According to one of the Mediatek firmware modders one would need ARM sourcecode to add any such feature which ain't gonna happen.

Thank you! It still looks like PowerDVD is above the DVD license, at least, it plays full DVD directories from an HD just fine. I think that encryption is part of the constraint, if it is not encrypted, it is playable! Now, if only we had some kind soul who could provide the source for the ARM, to include IFO parsing ... I know, I know, no chance in hell ... But what a cool feature that would be!

The way it works is when you are on the bookmarked file, just press ">>", and you get to the point where it got stopped (before being turned off). I see that this feature was not ported to 5990.
Also, subtitles seem to not always work with the "GOTO" function, it is a bit sporadic. I am not complaining for the sake of being negative, just to point out where things seem to be a bit less than ideal.

I completely understand :D Need 1: Filebrowser not showing correctly, I can't tell what file is what. Instead of chinese chars, it shows up as ¥-µ½£«³» random ascii chars . Neither the original or your 1.2.1 shows it correctly. Desire 2: Display subtitles in chinese. Yes, would like subtitle for avi. I don't recall it working but I can go verify it tonight. Desire 3: OSD in chinese Nice but not required. When you make a language change, does that change both OSD and subtitles or just subtitles? When I looked at font 3, I noticed that the table of chinese chars seem to be those used in common conversation. So I assume that it is not for changing the OSD...is this correct? In this post, http://board.softpedia.com/index.php?showtopic=9603&view=find ... mp;p=34060 you mentioned that need to fill out list with unicode value.... can you clarify what needs to be done? | Something I noticed that no one has posted about...
I have some DVD games (i.e Scene It, Amazing Race) and with the custom firmware, they don't function properly. I reverted back to the original Philips firmware and the games work fine. As a last resort, I tried the DVP5990_37_vb6_v_1 (the earliest custom firmware I could find) and I first got an error message but then it started playing the games. I'd keep the original firmware but I can't get by without the extra characters available with custom version. And the custom version just looks so much better too! Not sure if this is something that can be fixed. Thanks for all your hard work!

Open a "avi" movie change font, color and find optimal vertical position. Each font have different value. For OSD message in Russian I need some help. I must "map" your special char. in OSD font. You need to fill a table like this (all value are in HEXA)

For Philips apparently cause that's a bug in the original firmware. The only thing you can do about it is complain to Philips support.
It's 40 from disc and 25 from USB.

| blueribb posted 2008 Dec 23 09:09 | ||||||||||
I don't understand your statement. When you pause the player for a certain amount of time, the player will shut off - not your hard drive. My Maxtor 60gb mini hard drive has an LED which remains on and you can hear the platter spinning even when the Philips player is shut off.

I never turn my DVD player off. At night, if I'm tired, I simply pause the player. After approx. ten minutes the drive spins down and the hard drives head parks. The drive is essentially off. I assume that the WD Mybook drive senses that no data is being transferred and shuts down. In the morning, all I have to do is press play and the audio/picture stutters for a couple of seconds and resumes.

about DVP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2.rar how i sad before, changing FONT1 in this firmware with FONT1 from philips original firmware - change OSD language to russian without any non-russian symbols. But now there is only russian language in OSD, and if we try to change it to ENG or any other - OSD language don't change - and still be russian. So, it is not critically for us, because we need only russian language, but i tell you about this beacuse it may be a bug. if there is no bug, then all ok. now with DVP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2.rar with another FONT1 we have russian OSD and rus|eng file names in file browser. vb6rocod thanks for help!!! may i ask you some another questions. what can be file name length in file browser from USB FAT32 in DVP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2. i have 14 chars (but here on that forum i see that lenght is 25 chars). or ours VP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2 not have same fix? so, count of files list in file browser window now is 4 items. but may be i saw here that it must be more than 4 items. or the same, ours VP5996K_51_vb6_v2_2 not have same fix?[/b]

| I am very confuse....
In V_2_2 OSD Language is:
so, no russian language....Do apply a RESET after update? Try to unplug from power for 10 min. and see if still you have russian language. Original font 1 is different from what I use in v2_2. I need a font with transparent background and with outline. For this I need to make a new font, but I need to "map" char from 257 to 346. For this reason I ask you to fill table with unicode value. Then, I can add russian language to OSD language.Also I need to add new menu in russian language. About 14 char on USB, that's impossible, you must have 25 And I write, before upgrade SET OSD to English.

yes, i reset after update. but russian language is in firmware. it's "language 9 [08]" from language list. language 9 uses FONT1[00-01] thats why i change FONT1 Russian language in 1. Auto | [00] | [00] in OSD it seems like - "Auto (RUS)". and all another language from list you post upper. But if i try to select and apply another language (not "Auto (RUS)") its not work. i still have "Auto (RUS)". But its not a problem because we have russian language.
Many people tested and all still have "Auto (RUS)". And all testers set ENG before update and did reset after.
i will test it again on rus and eng file names.
yes. and its font dont have russian char. instead there is some symbols, may be it is chars from another language. so because i insert original FONT1 from philips firmware
if you still need it i will do it. i dont do it now because we have RUS in OSD. but if it really wrong and strange tell me please and i will fill table Immediately!!! Also pople reportsabout problem (i don tested it myself) (on original firmware was ok they say) when try to load DVD+R disk then player shutdown. if DVD-R there was no problem. | I have 5992/37 player and was having trouble with "KOREAN" subtitle.
I installed DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_2.rar firmware now, and tried smi, srt, and vobsub(idx/sub) subtitles, but non of them worked. smi and srt gave broken characters, and vobsub gave nothing...(I've tried different options for bitmap color settings). Today, I tried AVIAddXSubs with not much expectations. However it worked! Interestingly, it displayed KOREAN subtitle with different font style which I specified with AVIAddXSubs. (when I played the same file on my computer, it gives out designated font style) so, I am happy, but wondering what's going on... just looking at the firmware, it doesn't look like have full KOREAN character set with it, then how come it can display korean font with different style?

I have a similar problem using DVI->HDMI into my Hitachi TV. Composite works fine but the digital out gives screwy results. Upon powering on the 5992 the screen is shifted halfway to the left in 1080i mode (with differing screen size/position errors depending on resolution). The menu and DVDs also are half a screen to the left, but when I play anything from the USB port, the problem fixes itself, and then the menu and DVDs play fine. After digging online and talking with Hitachi tech support, there is no record of this happening with the player or with the TV. I have never tried the original 5992 firmware as the first thing I did upon purchase was update it with vb6's. Do you have this problem regardless of the firmware you have installed? I wonder if anyone else can shed some light on this bug.

| Hi
first many thanks to @vb6rocod for the work you have done for us all, it is very much appreciated & one of the reasons I bought this particular player. Please could you consider the following things if you have time for more development. 1). When displaying jpg files the player seems to load the picture, then after it is loaded the transition to display the picture is very long. Could this transition effect be removed please? When the picture starts to be displayed, pressing <forward> shows the picture instantly, but the drawback with this is that the next picture is then displayed automatically. I think the best behaviour might be that the next picture is always loaded but not displayed until <forward> is pressed, at which time it could be displayed instantly. 2). The file list only contains 4 items although it looks as if more could be displayed in the space, more files being displayed would make navigation easier. 3). When displaying lists (like the file list) could the cursor continue to move if the key is held in please? Instead of the current behaviour that means the key has to be pressed repeatedly. I have the 5990/12 I am posting in this thread because it seems to be the most current, I hope this is ok Thanks, /\/\

Checking the Philips web site I found that their firmware for the 3962/37 works for all of the below listed players.... DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_2.rar (and for West Europe - CP 1252) Thank you vb6rocod for all your work. I really appreciate it Everything works except there is one minor thing. File browser does not recognize file if it has non english characters in its name. For example if it has a character " i without a dot", file does not appear at all. To clarify my comment, I am not saying it does not display correctly, it does not display at all. I renamed the file, it worked. But sometimes if it is on Disc , it might be a problem. I tried the earlier version 1.2, same problem there. Philips original version recognize the file, does display file though modifying those characters. It is minor but I just wanted to report just in case anybody else encounters this. Once again thx vb6rocod for your efforts.
| vb6rocod posted 2009 Jan 01 17:07 | ||||||||||
To clarify this. Original Philips firmware support ONLY BASIC Latin alphabet, so no "special" character. In version for CP 1252 I add (thanks to shoora) a unicod conversion for all char for CP 1252. This work for files from USB or from CD/DVD (only ISO+Joliet). If a char is not diplayed: a. Is not from CP 1252 b. You write CD/DVD with UDF (not ISO).

| yigitus posted 2009 Jan 01 17:41 | ||||||||||
Wov, thx for the speedy response. Appreciate the answer. I just want to clarify my post. The issue is not recognizing special character. The file is not displayed at all , the machine does not see the file, it does not exist. When I rename it , it appears. In original Philips firmware the file exists, name displayed differently but it plays with no problem. I used the same file on USB flash drive. With original philips firmware: it appeared and with updated firmware: it says empty, no file . If it further helps the character causing the problem , I believe from Turkish alphabet. Once again it is only a minor issue and appreciate your response if it does not create too much trouble.

Have you tried carefully reading the FIRST post in this topic by tripper?
| cbecat posted 2009 Jan 02 00:52 | ||||||||||
| Yes, I did but I'm unclear on couple of things :(
- First, one of the comment 'Tipper' made on Aug 25th, namely "If you have a North American version 5990/37 there's no patching needed. ". I'm unclear whether this means I shouldn't try vb6rocod's update or not. - Second, I'm bit confused about the link to the latest version, amidst all the version history... - Also, is there anything I need to save before updating the firmware, in case if I should revert back (incidently, would I just do that by getting the latest version of off Philips site?) Thanks for your help
| philips599037 posted 2009 Jan 02 05:44 | ||||||||||
| No clue what Tripper meant by his post. The latest firmware versions from vb6rocod work with your player. You have two choices...one if you use Vobsub subtitles (sub/idx) and another if you use srt type subtitles. SRT subtitles are easy to find on the net so that's what I used.
1252 is the CP for America and West European. Here is the link to vb6rocod's site which has all his available firmware and upgrade directions. http://vb6rocod.blogspot.com/2008/12/philips-dvp599037.html Here is the link for your language (1252) with the patch for SRT type subtitles. http://rapidshare.de/files/41226861/DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_1.rar.html Now there are two bin files in that rar file download, one with a volume control patch and one without. The volume control patch will enable your dvd player remote to control the volume on the player but you will lose your repeat and replay A+B abilities. If you have a Philips TV this patch isn't necessary because the dvd remote volume and channel functions work. I didn't want to lose the repeat and A+B so I use my TV remote to control the volume. The only thing you need to save before you install this firmware is the DivX VOD code which is listed in the preferences on your original Philips firmware. This code is used to register your player for DivX video on demand movies. With vb6rocod's firmware, the code won't be visible in the player set up screen. If you want to revert back to your original firmware you simply download the current version from the Philips site and reinstall it using the same directions from vb6rocod's web site. Just be careful and follow all the burning and upgrade installation steps exactly. Good luck. :) Edit: One more thing I forgot to mention is to check your current Philips firmware version to make sure you don't need to update that first. The current version is V31, and depending on how long your player was on the store shelf, it might not have the current version available installed. 1. POWER ON the DVD player 2. Press SETUP key to enter SETUP menu 3. Press < or > to navigate to GENERAL menu 4. Press keys 1,3,7,9 successively 5. Check the software version of the player by looking at the last 2 digits Example: Version xx.xx.xx.27 http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpcontent.pl?scy=US& ... ur_aen.pdf

| Update: thanks to the excellent instructions, this process went much smoother than I thought :-)
Thank you vb6rocod, Tripper and philips599037 for your help. - I had v27 and when I loaded the flash drive with v31 from Philips, it looked like it went through 2 upgrade cycles. First time, as soon as I popped the drive, it went to "upgrading" without waiting for any prompt. Then it popped the tray out, (I think I manually closed the tray), rebooted and displayed a "press play to update" prompt. After doing so, it copied the bin file and then opened the tray, again. As noted above, I waited for the flash drive to stop blinking and then removed it. It then closed the tray and rebooted. When it came back, I inserted the flash drive with vb6rocod's mod firmware. This was a fairly straight forward process by now :-) Overall, it took about 5mins, each cycle taking about 2mins. I had my laptop open with philips599037's excellent instructions and consulted it at regular interval to make sure I don't do anything stupid. So for me it took about 15mins total... I like the new skin and file browser a lot. I'm sure I'll come to appreciate the full impact of the update over the coming week or so but this looks neat! Btw, small feature request (or usability question), currently I don't see a way to play-all/random MP3 songs from multiple folders. This is a handy utility that I almost took for granted but after reading the manual multiple times, it doesn't seem possible with this unit - at least not to me. If so, what a shame :( Is it possible to add this feature to your next firmware update, assuming it is possible?...

It has been a few days now. I upgraded and used the firmware mentioned above. Everything worked very well and it is very stable. I wanted to report it for the posters. I had to revert back to original Philips software due to special character issue described above. I believe most of you will not be affected by this, in rare case you encounter this just rename the file it works fine. Unfortunately I have few disks which I am not able to rename easily and with this firmware player does not recognize existence of the files. In summary, this is a great firmware, and includes very useful improvement of over the original firmware such as longer file names and especialy go to function in avi file. I give my thanks to vb6rocod and appreciate all the efforts that he put into this and recommend it to everybody..

| Hello again!
I've now applied the mod DVP5990K_75.bin, dated December 25th, 2008. I've tried the karaoke key, but it doesn't affect the audio levels. There are actually vol +/- keys on this remote but they are only for control of an EasyLinked TV, presumably via an HDMI cable, which I don't yet have, but which I intend to buy today or tomorrow. Now answering your question, in setup in "OSD Language" I've selected English, rather than "Auto (ENG)". I note that you've removed some of the subtitling options in this release ..... still good though. Thanks for your time & efforts with these mods. Undoubtedly improving on the stock version. By the way ... have you ever released anything for a DVP3252K/75? It's another Philips avi-via-usb player I have here, which off course still suffers from the short file name display "feature". As before, unplugging it and plugging it back in resolved the issue. One minor request, if you are working on your update again.. could you load the Philips logo artwork screen into a 2d image editing program, and turn it's brightness now a bit? After the logo is on our screen for a while here, it leaves a bit of a ghost images, and I'm concerned about burn in. I can always use the tv's white screen to clear up the ghosting, but if the phiips logo was less bright, the ghosting wouldn't be as bad. Happy new year, and again thanks much for this updated firmware!

VB, something I noticed. the 5990 has slowdown playback to 1/16th speeds, but no actual frame by frame advancement. Has anyone uncovered a hidden frame advancement feature, or is it buried in there somewhere? I was just looking at video quality on my standalone vs my pc playback, and had no idea there wasn't a frame by frame advancement on the 5990 till now.

Caveat? Don't Know If This Is Important But The Recent Update File "DVP5990_37.bin," From DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_1_DivX_Logo_V2File_Browser_UOP.rar, Seems To Be "2042 kb," Somewhat LESS Than Usual (via WinXP/Explore/View-Details) - Seems *ALL* Of VB's "DVP5990_37.bin" Files For *ALL* Available VB Versions, Including The Most Recent Version From DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_1_CD_Logo_UOP.rar (And, As Well, From The Original Manufacturer/Philips Version 31 FirmWare DownLoad), Are "2044 kb" Instead?
| philips599037 posted 2009 Jan 08 17:53 | ||||||||||
When I saved the two bin files the "Best" compression was the Winrar setting. I can see now that vb6rocod used the "Fastest" compression setting when he saved his .bin files. When each of those .bin files are extracted from the downloaded .rar file they are 1.99mb uncompressed, which is the same size as any of the modded firmware .bin files. I don't think it makes a difference how the files were compressed, when they are uncompressed they're the same size in the end. If it does make a difference, I will gladly change the compression setting and make another link using the "Fastest" compression setting instead of the "Best."
| u4s posted 2009 Jan 08 18:41 | ||||||||||
Our Noted Sizes For The "DVP5990_37.bin" Files Are Uncompressed Sizes As Far As We Know. Seems Curious That There Seems To Be 2 kb Uncompressed Size LESS In The Newer FirmWare File Than All Others. We Have Little Experience With This - All May Be Completely OK Of Course And The Difference May Be Of No Importance Whatsoever - Maybe Someone With More Experience Can Comment?

Has anyone done something similar and what advice or help would you suggest? My player is the 5990/37 just bought thru newegg. I'm converting my dvds to divx format and i have noticed that the fast reverse button(2x,4x,....) seems to freeze up when playing a movie from a usb stick. The fast forward seems to work fine. No big deal because i can double hit the title button to use the go to feature. I use the Fairuse wizard 2 to convert my dvds to divx. What other formats or programs would you suggest for a good balance between size and quality. I am shrinking my dvds to 1.5 gigs and the quality seems pretty good. Is there any way to permanently set the resolution option. My tv is a 720p so I would like to upconvert everyting to 720p, not 1080i or something else. 2. The original firmware do not have this banner and it looks better. The File Browser is very nicely done with thin borders and dark colors makes it easy on the eyes. The 3rd one I tried with the DivX logo is a big improvement over the large PHILIPS banner. But I wished it kept the File Browser by vb6rocod because it seemed to go well with this background. This V2 File Browser is kinda bright and strains the eyes. I kept this one anyway because I'd rather not see the PHILIPS banner. | I'm sorry if this has been discussed before. Would any of these modified firmwares solve a problem that I am encountering. I just picked up a 5990/37 yesterday and am trying to see how it performs straight out of the box. It already comes with the most recent firmware listed on the Philips website. I was trying to play either a DVD-Video .ISO file or Vob files (in a VIDEO_TS) folder located on a portable hard disk via the player's built-in USB port. In general the VOB files seem to play fine whereas the ISO files are ignored. Is there any way to support playback from .ISO files? More importantl is an audio glitch or restriction. I run the HDMI output through a Denon receiver on its way to my HDTV so I can tell what audio format is being output from the player's HDMI jack. Unlike when I play the original DVD when I play the VOB files via USB it seems that the Philips player outputs the audio in stereo no matter which audio track I choose. If I choose DTS output I can't hear any audio at all. Is this a known issue and is there some way to get the 5990 to transmit the correct audio data via HDMI when playing VOB files via USB.

I wanted to add a couple lines to the V2 File Browser but I cannot figure out how you did it. I think I can add at least two more lines without having to modify the browser size. Can you tell me what to change using UltaEdit, MTKwindows, and MTKremaker? Thanks.

Gidday VB6ROCOD! I've installed DVP5990K_75_vb6_v3.rar (as above) and have no problems with it. The 8 line browser is superb! Well done & again, thanks! However, I don't get the VOLUME working at all. For me, this is not an issue, since I choose to leave the dvd volume set at 20 on the General Setup Page, and I don't imagine I would ever change this. Incidentally, I tried this using all 3 of my Philips dvd remotes RC-5220, 2422 549 01933 from my 3252, and RC2K12 from an old DVP64?. All controlled the DVP5990K, but none were successful with the VOLUME control via the Repeat key(s). I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand your: Question: If press "Vocal" key first is "MIC" and second is "VOL" (and can be changed with arrow left-right) ? But on avi playback, VOCAL is defeated, on dvd it cycles through its normal options. There is also a KARAOKE key. If that is pressed it does MIC ON first and VOL second, and this can be changed by left/right arrow keys from VOL 00 to VOL 20. NOTE however that this does NOT actually affect playback audio volume of the media file I'm watching. I presume it affects the volume of the microphone. I haven't myself used a microphone at all with this device. I find I have little need of a microphone now I've my whisky intake under control. I note you provide a link above also for DVP5990K_55. Would I damage my DVP5990K/75 by installing it? Cheers from the South Pacific!

| I have a DVP5990/37. You have a choice of logo? NICE.
Some comments/thoughts. The key benefits for me of your firmware are two things. The ability to go straight to the movie without the annoying clutter of having to move through "coming shortly" and advertising. This is really excellent. And the longer file names for files on a USB stick. Also truly excellent. I assume that your feature relating to subtitles (colours, sizes, positions) pertains only to subtitles on DIVX files and not on regular movies that you'd play from a DVD? I played a DVD with subtitles and they are yellow, whereas your firmware is white by default. Suggestions: Is it necessary to change the fonts and color schemes on the menus under "setup" and "display" and also the fonts and colour used when displaying the folder structure (with the longer filenames) when you hit the USB key? I actually like the soft color schemes that the player has by default. Where your color scheme really seems to be intrusive is the "Display" menu during DVD playback. The default Philips one looks much nicer. I ACKNOWLEDGE here 2 things. First, you are doing this for free! And second, colors are very much an issue of taste. What looks good to one person may look terrible to another. So don't get me wrong, I am VERY HAPPY to have your free firmware which functionally does wonderful things. But aesthetically, I'd like to have the choice to just go with what Philips designers chose. They did a good job (to my eye)! Main thing is - this works, and it's great. Thank you very much.

| I getting tired of all the color scheme, logo changes, etc.. Be thankful for what vb6rocod has done. If you want it a different way use one of the older firmware versions or learn how to make the changes yourself. | ||||||||||

| The changes I originally proposed were just to reduce screen burn. And we wouldn't have that reduction if I hadn't requested it.
IMHO other people come up with ideas that can be beneficial, so there's nothing wrong with coming up with new ideas. Personally, I've never seen a tutorial anywhere on how to make image changes like that, so it's beyond me. I'm sure many others are in the same situation.

Actually "we" would have, simply by replacing them ourselves with MTK Remaker, no tutorial necessary for that. Funny you should feel adressed by Tripper's remark though, after all it's you who managed to ask questions in all Philips threads on this forum that already had been answered there before.

| Locating information in the forums here isn't always the easiest task.
I think I spent 45 minutes doing various searches and stumbling around here trying to find info on the 5990/27. That's a LOT of hunting and rooting around. And I DID try to contribute by created the less vibrant images as well, since I didn't know what tools were used to create the new modifications. If you guys already know everything, why haunt the thread dissing people who ARE here trying to learn and locate information? Rather then give people worthless opinionated high n mighty crap, instead why not be more community minded, and help them out making thier own mods themselves?
| Tripper_ posted 2009 Jan 24 08:09 | ||||||||||
I have been nothing but polite to you. In no way am I high and mighty. Everything that I suggest I have researched and have done myself. I spent at least a full day building a serial cable to flash the philips player and to change backgrounds and fonts. I only ask of you what I ask of myself. Have you even gone to the link I posted. If you have then you realize that a lot of smart people have already written programs to help you with the basics. The hard stuff is what vb6rocod does. He's trying to reverse engineer software which he does not have the source code. And on another note if you would read the first post you will see a link to techflaws faqs. He has unselfishly spent his time creating a web page to help people like you.
| Gareee posted 2009 Jan 24 08:15 | ||||||||||
| I did initially read the entire 10 page thread.. and was confused because it looked like there were subsequent/newer updates then what was in the initial post, which is why I asked the questions I did. Bricking my standalone player didn't seem like a great idea, so I asked before attempting anything that might damage it.
At any rte, this thread drift isn't really adding anything positive to the discussion.
| Techflaws posted 2009 Jan 25 01:46 | ||||||||||
Oh but it is, you simply read an entire thread on the topic you're interested in as well as similar topics. If you are smart you might also follow some links from there, like the one to my FAQ, for example.
To make them rethink their attitude and tap into resources already available so they don't start asking further questions already answered as well as encourage newcomers to do the same. Sound reasonable, doesn't it?
Agreed, since everything has been said maybe you just stop defending yourself and we're all moving on.

Not Tested Final patch:Selectionbar follows playing file (mp3). The blue bar sets the current playing file, and yellow bar shows the selectable files. When a current playing file is on the next page of filebrowser, the user can't see it because the yellow bar still remains on the previous page. Now with this patch, moving filebrowser to the next page when blue bar also moves. CD Logo

| I just picked up a 5992 to replace a Cyberhome CH655 I've owned for 4 years that has been showing signs of dying by not powering up from standby well and not reading divx files correctly. I picked the 5992 for cost, decent reviews, and the USB feature. I do miss the upconvert via component feature that the 655 had as I do see a slightly degraded picture with XVID movies and the 5992 (My HDTV is from 06/02 and does not have HDMI). I was even going to return the 5992 when I saw no "GOTO" button on the remote which I use alot.
Thanks to vb6rocod, for that feature alone, this modded firmware is a blessing. The long filenames, 8 list filebrowser is also great and I'm extremely appreciated for all your hard work. I noticed the blue selection bar not updating correctly when playing mp3's in folder mode so I'm glad this is fixed. I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say "the yellow bar shows the selectable files".. I thought it acts as a cursor to select one file only. Is there a way to multiselect and have the player play a queued selection of songs?? Also, may I request a way to change the yellow bar to something less intrusive by changing color or shortening the length?? Or maybe the highlight can disappear after a second once selected as it gets in the way of the jpeg preview pictures. Once again, thanks for all your great efforts. Synchron 8)

| Yeah, he's made good players into great players!
Why7 these built in features are not enabled from the factory is beyond me. I'd think manufacturers would want to cram the most features in thier product to increase sales. I also notice some degrading in viewing xvid avi files as well, specifically slightly yellowish and purplish "spots" Someone said it was probably a specific chip they use for decoding.

You can change transparency for window 0x0F in MTKWindows. Set to 1 (now is 2 , 3 is opaque). I make a test with "1" and is more "transparent", also yellow color is not so intense. It seems to be the only model currently available to the UK (I just purchased one from Amazon after waiting ages for them to come back in stock). I've looked at your blog page and what you've done with the DVP5990/37 looks amazing. I used to have a Yamada 6600 about five years ago and i used to love the mods for that. Thanks in advance.
