Need to Understand about DVD Burners
mn072065 posted 2008 Jun 19 18:51
ok here is my dilemma. I have two burners. The Pioneer DVR-115D firmware 1.18 IDE and a newly purchase LG HL-DT-ST GH22LP20 firmware 1.0 IDE. Pioneer is set as Master and the LG as Slave. I had before the Pioneer as Master, and also Samsung SATA. When i used to rip my personal backup movies, both took 10 minutes each to rip. Now that i installed the LG IDE, both burners are ripping at 30 minutes each. I chose the LG because i thought it will rip faster. Is it because when i install the other IDE as slave, i lost power. Thanks for any response, this is the place to learn things like this.

First thing I would check is to see if they reverted to PIO mode:
:
To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.

Remind me please how do i check this? PLease

i remember, i just checked, both say Ultra DMA Mode 4

Then one of the burners may not like to be in either the Slave or the Master position. You might have to juggle around the positions, which is a pain if you have the other channel used already. :( And I assume you checked that the jumpers are set properly for their selected positions?

LG drives are known for their slow ripping. Although it does help to have slower rip speed when it comes to a disc that maybe scratched. If both IDE dvd burners are UDMA 4 then you're ide controllers are fine. It would be helpful if you post the configuration of all your hard drives and dvd drives by using nero infotool. Take a snapshot of it then post it here so we can see how you have the drives connected.

You can try setting the PIONEER 115 to slave and set the LG drive to master and see what happens. Although PIONEER recommends having their drives set to master I do have a few PIONEER 111/112 drives that are set to slave. They work without any problems set to slave. The PIONEER 115 has no riplock but there's a thread in the PIONEER forum at CdFreaks.com regarding a bug within the drive that slows down the ripping speed.

Do a TRANSFER RATE test by using CD/DVD SPEED. That way you'll see whether or not if your drives are working properly.

I have the jumpers correct. i'm testing now with cd/dvd speed. But i want to mention again that i had no problems before with Pioneer as master IDE and Samsung SATA. Both ripping in 10 minutes. I have to assume it's because of the SATA being master and having the Pioneer as master.

post your motherboard brand and the model number. also what SAMSUNG SATA model do you have? S203B? it shouldn't make a difference as far as having the ide drive set to master & sata set to master. are you using a 80 wire ide cable for your ide drives? if you are using one then buy a new 80 wire ide cable since they can fail.

mn072065 posted 2008 Jun 19 21:04
Wow I really thing it's the wire, i will buy one tomorrow. I have an SLI motherboard, my Samsung is SH203. I have two WD 300 10,000 RPM HD and another 150 10,000 RPM HD. If that helps. I want to thank all trying to help. Greatly appreciate it.

Try the new 80 wire ide cable first. If the problem still exists then you could download the latest drivers for your mobo. I assume your SLI mobo uses the NVIDIA chipset drivers. You could install the latest NVIDIA chipset drivers to see if that would help solve your problem. Download them from the NVIDIA website and not from your motherboard website.

Try reversing the Master/Slave settings. On extremely rare occassions, setting both as Slave may work.

Also test both drives seperately alone on the cable. Most likely issue is that the two drives just don't play nice on the same cable. Those who say this can't happen simply haven't seen, tested, and verified this for themselves.

The previous setup had nothing whatsoever to do with a SATA as master, master/slave is not relevant for SATA. The difference was that the original optical drive was alone on the cable, and/or paired with a more compatible drive.

Using the correct cable may help, as well.

Using both as slave wouldn't work. Yes, dvd burners like the BENQ 1620, 1640, 1650 & 1655 drives would not work if they were connected to the same ide cable. On one of my pc's I had (2) BENQ 1640's on the same ide cable and for weird reasons one drive didn't work correctly. I removed one of them and installed a PIONEER 111L drive then everything works fine. The one I removed is another computer and it works correctly. But in mini computer I have a BENQ 1640 & 1650 connected on the same ide cable which work perfectly fine with no problems. Go Figure!

With SATA dvd burners it's the SATA controller chipset that will determine whether or not the dvd burner will work correctly or not. It's amazing what a new 80 wire ide cable can do for a dvd burner! :)

Thanks again all, i will update later when i buy a new cable. Thanks again.

Using both set to slave can in fact work, it is rare but I state this as I have personnally seen it function, more than once.

Whether it will work with specific drives is not something I track, but it is something worth trying if standard Master/Slave is not functioning properly. Takes less than 5 minutes to test.

Buying a new 80 wire ide cable is a safer bet....Too each's own! :P :)
