| Looking for the best quality conversion from dvd to my mac's hd. I thought mpeg 2 was pretty much the way to go but now maybe avi? File size really is no issue but i dont want to go DV AVI size... 13gb per hour is huge! Whats the best encoder? Again, i'm not looking for file compression only excellent quality! I know this is supre newbie but i can seem to find a straight forward answer on any guides or FAQ's.. Thanks! | ||

DVD is mpg2 so if file size is no issue then just rip the dvd to your HDD intact. You will not get any better quality than the original dvd format. Maybe Mactheripper ? Have you looked in the tools section for MAC dvd ripping tools ? | ||

| If you are looking at moving your DVD to your hard drive, than copy(rip) is the way. DVD is already compressed format (mpeg2), so any conversion to avi, unless you are talking about avi=mpeg4 which is even more compressed, is not going to improve the quality. Main thing is to copy DVD as it is without making DVD9 into DVD5 which will decrease bitrate, thus quality of the picture. | ||

Or you could make a disk image file, which can be mounted as a virtual volume and can be played like a regular disc. | ||

| The funny thing is, I have been using wondershare dvd ripper and it outputs a single VOB file for the dvd but i can't move it from my hardrive to the external hd. It says an unexpected error has occured. | ||

| If your external HDD is formated to the FAT32 file system, and the single VOB is larger than 4GB you won't be able to copy it over. FAT32 has a 4Gb filesize limit.
Your options are; 1. Format the external drive to the Mac file system, however this reduces the ability for other devices to read it. 2. Split the file into smaller pieces (less that 4GB per chunk) 3. Re-encode the video to fit into a smaller file size. H264 would be the best option in this scenario. |
