MP4 Player - AVIconverter program - Mencoder error
Fredjklein posted 2007 Jun 12 18:56
OK, I'll try to make this as brief as possible.
CHAPTER ONE
1. I bought an MP4 Player/Radio/PhotoViewer/etc.. It works just fine!
2. I wanted to convert some of my movies to the AVI format it requires, using the program that came with it. (AVICONVERTER 2.0, I think)
3. The program consistently halts with the message "MENCODER.EXE has... generated an error and must close - or something to that effect. :-x :-x
4. I was sure it was the program, but the SAME program runs just fine on a friends computer (Both systems XP SP2).
5. I can't find anything about this type of failure.
6. I've tried re installing the program, using different file type inputs, etc.. NO luck.

Got any ideas?

CHAPTER TWO
Actually, if I could just find ANY program that will give the required 220x176 AVI file for the player, I would be contented. Unfortunately I don't know what kind of Codecs (I believe Xvid), bit rates, or audio properties the file has to be. I DO know that few Encoder front ends have the 220x176 setting. (I looked at Pinnacle and the SUPER (C) program)

Suggestions here?

CHAPTER THREE
Finally - another mystery. I decided to look at the suspect mencoder.exe file, and it shows up as being in the Windows Prefetch area (whatever the blooming blazes that is). I watched the files in the AVICONVERTER directory after they were installed, and I see MENCODER.exe; but after executing it (an getting a failure) the file disappears - this may just be a Windows peculiarity, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I hope someone can shed some light....

Thanks in advance

Fred

Fredjklein :
...

MediaCoder or directly from command line MEncoder.

:

Xvid, but without B-frames and audio MP2.

:

MEncoder is command line tool - AVIConverter is only simple GUI.

Example syntax:
:
mencoder input_file.avi -ofps 20 -vf-add scale=224:176 -vf-add expand=224:176:-1:-1:1 -srate 44100 -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=500:max_bframes=0:quant_type=h263 -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp2:abitrate=128 -o output_file.avi

Please check this sample.
http://kotuha.com/file/HLRGS-Madagascar_Trailer_transcoded.html

It transcode in MediaCoder.
I'm look at AVIConverter 2.0 configuration file and replicate.
Maximum B-frames between I/P-frames = 0

Many thanks for the reply, however, I think I understated the problem.

Whenever I run the GUI's (MediaCoder file you suggested, AVIconverter 2.0 or 4.0....), I get an Mencoder.exe error consistently - I can figure out how to correct the problem. Suggestions?

Again Thanks :D

SOLUTION FOUND!

:D :D  :D

Thanks to all who responded with some exellent tips and suggestions. The real answer to the problem came from a Mr. RC from Bedford while searching GOOGLE for MENCODER references.

As it turns out I have an AMD processor in my machine and THAT was the cause of the problem.
Mr. "RC from Bedford" posted a link to a site with a version of MENCODER that works with the AMD processor.

See:
http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer/builds/mencoder-athlon-svn-23404.7z

The page is CHINEESE, but here is the GOOGLE link with translation
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&u=ht ... %26hl%3Den

The AVICONVERTER now works flawlessly.

I hope this helps others.

Fred Klein

Odd if anything I have seen more crashes with mencoder on Intel CPU's. In particular P4's. I would assume that the build that comes with aviconverter is compiled with CPU runtime detection, so really it should run on any CPU. Still a specifically compiled build should be faster, more so if libxvidcore, etc. were also compiled for your CPU.

Hello everyone !

I've just got chineese mp4 touch screen player and I had the same problem watching movie in it eventhough my movie files are AVI. After fews try , I got my mp4 play movies nicely the way I wanted. first you need the AVI converter 3.0 or early version will be fine and then convert any of your movies to AVI files ( any format of your movies even your movies is already in avi file. Somehow i don't know but the chineese mp4 touch screen player only play those movies after being converted by avi converter .) If when you start to convert your movies to avi format and got the messages " mencoder.exe has generated error.." or illegal system will be closed by window ... That mean your system is not strong anough to handle avi converter ( this program required CPU : Intel or AMD core. Intel requires at least pentium 3 or over, including Intel Celeron . windows operation that must be installed with the player in the version of MS Media Player 9 or over )
After convert your movie and then transfer them to your touch screen mp4 and enjoy them . Below is the link you will find the avi converter 3.0

good luck anyone !
