| I use Media Player Classic 6.4.9.0 to play media files that WMP does not support, but MPC can no play DivX files. Although there are specified that Media Player Classic is able to play videos of any format include DivX, in fact it can't play a DivX movie.
I can listen audio, but video can not be rendered. I checked file info with GSpot, and it show me the file is DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI, OpenDML (AVI v2.0) and requires Codec DX50 DivX 6.2.5 MPG4 I don't want to mess with installing codecs into system, this is why I use Media Player Classic, but what is way to play DivX files? Again, I dont want install extra codecs into system and dont want install additional software. | ||

| You need to install the DivX codec or ffdshow (with DivX enabled in the configuration) to decode that file
or you can use a media player that includes codecs such as VLC, Mplayer, or KMplayer You won't be able to play it without a proper decoder | ||

English isn't your native language. "able to play any format" does NOT mean "will play any format without help". MPC comes with some codecs built in and others you have to install. It seems that Divx must be installed. If you don't want to install the Divx codec to use MPC then use VLC instead. You do not need to install the Divx codec to use VLC. | ||

| I would recommend ffdshow if you want to use MPC. It's not a codec pack and very rarely causes problems and is easily uninstalled if desired. It's also about 4MB in size. VLC is still a good player to have around. It has it's own codecs and can play most any format. If you need to play Real or Quicktime, you can install Real Alternative Player and Quicktime Alternative Player. They are based on MPC and will use your existing MPC player and just add those codecs.
EDIT: I don't believe Divx normally authorizes other players to include their codec. It's not open source, like Xvid or others. They want you to download it directly from them. :( | ||

| will the ffdshow change default system settings/preferences for media file types? (for wmv, mp3) Ffdshow installation requires set a number of options in addition to ffdshow filter: VFW interface, AviSynth scripts serving, Application plugins(Avisynth, VirtyalDub, DScaler), plus select a lot settings in Additional tasks. Which things is required?
Is the using ffdshow better solution than VLC? | ||

| I would probably just install VLC and you can't really go wrong. :) With VLC, if you also check 'Context menus' during the install, it will be listed when you R click a video as player choice. Or you can still select the other players in 'Open with'. VLC will also play damaged or corrupted videos most times. If VLC can't play it, probably nothing else will. And it can transcode to other formats, along with being able to stream video. Very handy program. :)
And you are probably aware that by R clicking on a video and selecting 'Properties', you can set the default player for that format of video. For MPC, you could also just install the Xvid codec and use it for Divx video playback. |
