| Is the right assumption that idx and sub files dont match when making a dvd from av avi file?
I cant get none of the encoders to work, only get error that at the end of the muxing it says it cant load the idx or the sub files. Is this a give up situation? | ||||

| Your best bet would be to try and find an .srt file to use instead of your .idx/.sub files.
Or you could use PC tools to convert .idx/.sub to .srt. | ||||

Isnt this program supposed to be for macs???? I dont have a PC... ARGH! New problems: i try to encode another film which has an .srt file, but its an ntsc film - so i use mpg2enc - and i get the answer: dont use spaces or special characters in..... input is: /Volumes/LaCie Disk 1/Army of Shadows/ArmyofShadows.avi.part1.avi output is: /Volumes/LaCie Disk 1/Army of Shadows/ArmyofShadows.avi.part1.avi.ff Its so incredibly annoying that EVERY time i sit down to watch a film i end up soending the entire night trying to get this bloody program to work. It shouldnt be that way, should it? | ||||

at least ffmpegx has turned out to be the best diet for me ever. Whenever I plan for a night in, stack up the goodies and kick off the shoes...BAM! ERROR! no film, no goodies, just pure frustration. I gather I must have lost at least 10 kg's the last year alone. And I KNOW that im not the only person feeling that it is pisstaking to be mentioning pc software in a mac forum. Picture the other way around and hear the tune: oh you mac freaks think you are so special. What we need is a program that is reliable! Thank good I never paid for this crap:( | ||||

The built-in mplayer (Play button) plays AVIs with idx/sub subtitle files, but won't use those idx/sub files for selectable DVD subtitles or even burned-in subtitles. I wish it was different, but it isn't so with the current version. I am not aware of any Mac tool to convert VobSub (idx/sub) to SubRip (srt) format, hence my previous suggestion.
That applies to the whole path, not just the filename. Change the volume name "LaCie Disk 1" into "LaCie_Disk_1" Change the folder name "Army of Shadows" into "Army_of_Shadows" See? No more spaces... and mpeg2enc and/or the mux tool won't give you that error anymore. | ||||

| I knew about the volume as well, however; its not just ffmpegx running in this machine. All other torrents must be reloaded and hash checked, my editing software needs to be redirected, etc etc etc.
Its just not good enough man. Had it only been those two incidents, byt seriously, its another issue every single time i try to run something through this software. Like I said, i soend more time preparing the films than actually watching them, and THATS silly. From now on its full dvd-r downloads for me. This sucks bigtime! Im now a retired ffmpegcrap user (pardon my french) but you should hear some of the talk in other forums... | ||||

| A developer creates a tool for his own use. He lets other uses try it for free. If you don't like it, then don't use it and use something else. But don't spend over a year in frustration, that can't be good for your health, even taken the weightloss into account. :)
You're free to program your own application that does everything the way you want it. Heck, I might even pay the shareware fee for it if it makes my top 5 video tools. | ||||

| your best bet would be to hardsub onto the video rather than trying to utilize the 2 files in a selectable subtitle manner on dvd. i believe (emphasis on believe) that it is the .idx file that has the data on it, so load your video through the xvid mencoder selection, select the .idx file in the subtitle adding section, and try previewing it. if it pops up and is placed correctly, hardsub it, then run your video through the dvd-creation process.

| Hi Levina. If you don't have the VobSub (.idx/.sub) already extracted in order to post process, but want to extract them first, then this discussion may could help you. I have not still give it a try.

| theres no real good solution for idx/sub handling under osx because frankly, little has been done to develop solid OCR freeware. the pool of possible working candidate applications that can work with vobsubs on osx is extremely limited and every choice is crippled.
the fastest bet is to find a good windows-based OCR application, load it onto your windows machine (or your friends), extract out the vobsub, take it to the windows machine with a thumbdrive or your ipod, and work on converting it to text-based through OCR (which can be a rather arduous task). otherwise, you are at the mercy of open source community software developers who wouldnt rank OCR capabilities very high at all in their list of things to work on. | ||||

| Actually, there is an application for Mac that can extract subtitles from a VIDEO_TS folder into an .srt file. It's called D-Subtitler. It does the job, but there will be some editing to do after. It's basically a scanner of the bitmap images that are in the VOB files and as such it gets confused and makes mistakes. Having said that, I quite liked it. However, I removed it from my Mac since it turned out that quitting it, hadn't shut it down, nothing could, and it was draining resources. Nevertheless, you may want to try it out. | ||||

| it sounds as if the original poster already had external sub/idx files ripped from a source, though, not something directly in a video_ts folder or from their own rip. can d-subtitler take in straight sub/idx files by themselves? | ||||

| Howdy Folks:
Have an avi file plays fine in QT( QT icon )- just no subtitles - also have a separate subtitle file with VLC icon - SUB - when opened in VLC only info I can see from streams ( about 30 - is stream 0 codec spu - eng subtitles - when I try to convert with FFmpeg - just saves as another avi. file - no TS folder and no subtitles - though subtitles present in MPlayer with preview FFMpeg- any ideas my way - cheers in advance | ||||
