Long term storage format.

Hi all. I am not sure if this is the right forum. Feel free to move it.

I have a number of VHS tapes I am capturing to my computer. Nothing I haven't done before. But there have footage I can not lose. Once onto Hard Disk, I am going to sort out an offsite backup of them.

But my question is whats the best compression to keep them in. My card captures in mpeg2, and its at max, which is translating to a bit over 3mb per second. So not sure if I need to transcode them, but thought I'd ask what other are doing. I have considered MJPEG, or a high bitrate H264. But not sure.

Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks.

The highest quality format is the one you capture in. Any transcoding will decrease the quailty. Backup on multiple DVDs and hard drives. Check them all once a year. Replace any that show signs of problems.
