| I don't do DL media authoring very much as you can tell by my dumb question...:):)
Does/Can ImgBurn choose a chapter within a video (lets say a concert video) to place the layer break? My project is just under 6GB for this un-edited version of the show that I am authoring right now and the only thing I can think of to use as a layer break would be a chapter....at least in my uneducated DL brain. And is that a "cell"? I never bothered to study the details of the file/folder structure....or I was sick that day. :):):) | ||

| I do a lot of DL burning with Imgburn. It analyzes the video then automatically offers one or more layer breaks for you to choose between. You can preview each one before deciding. You usually want to pick the one which will be least noticable of the 1-2 second delay, but might also want to consider padding. Some layer breaks use no padding, others use a lot, perhaps several GB extra.
Sorry but I don't know anything about chapters or cells, although some of that technical information is given if you can understand it (I can't). | ||

| There are limitations for the position of that chapter. It must reside in the range approximately between half of the DVD file size and half size of DVD9 capacity. Then the recording application (like ImgBurn) will be able to define it as a valid layer break position. It will also re-allocate sectors for matching the corresponding cell with the edge of the error correction block (ECC). That's from recommendations by Mediachance:

| Yea....it did pick the 7th or 8th chapter....I chose the 8th after previewing and seeing that the song didn't start exactly on the mark like the 7th did.....so it is about half-and-half on the disc. None of the layer break choices were listed as "excellent" however....but it still worked out well. Plays fine on both the computer and the set-top player.

| I always preview what ImgBurn flags as the available options, before deciding. Not sure what's up when IB shows 8 possibles, but all of them rated only 'Average.' Or with the Yes / No that shows for SPLIP. But it always seems to work. | ||

In terms of your initial question:
One of the requirements for a layer break is that it must be at a cell boundary (the start of a cell). That's so a cell doesn't start on one layer and end on the other layer (a cell can't span the layer break). Chapters must begin at the start of a cell, but a chapter may refer to more than one cell. As a result, where ImgBurn puts a layer break doesn't have to be at the start of a chapter, but the start of any chapter would satisfy this particular requirement. The beauty of using ImgBurn is that it takes care of all the details for you, and just displays the places where you can put the layer break. As JohnnyBob suggested, you just preview the available choices (preferably also considering the impact of large amounts of padding), make your selection, and ImgBurn takes care of everything else (except, of course, for putting a Verbatim +RDL disk in the drive). |
