How to create DVD with closed captions
rakf1 posted 2006 Nov 19 00:19
This is a guide to author a DVD with closed captions. You can also add existing DVD subtitles as closed captions to your DVD.

Tools used:
1. SCC Tools
2. DVD lab Pro 2

Index:
1. Create closed captions in SCC format
2. Use DVD lab Pro to add closed captions and author DVD
3. Verify that the created DVD has closed captions

1. Create closed captions in SCC format
DVD lab pro requires the closed captions to be in SCC format. SCC file can be created from an existing srt file (popular subtitle ripped file). Download SCC Tools from the link below:
http://www.geocities.com/mcpoodle43/SCC_TOOLS/DOCS/SCC_TOOLS.HTML

If you dont have a srt file, creating one is very simple. The screen-shot below shows an example of srt format. You just have to type in the text and the time code duration for the closed caption to appear on the video.

00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000 indicates the the text "hello, How are you" will be displayed from 1 second into the video and ends at 3 seconds.

Use the subrip2scc.exe command line utility from SCC Tools to convert the srt file to scc file.
subrip2scc test.srt

SCC Tools also has other options to create scc files from other subtitle formats, refer to the SCC Tools documentation for other options.

2. Use DVD lab Pro to add closed captions and author DVD

Use the link below to a tutorial about DVD lab Pro, this guide just explains the steps to add line 21 closed captions to DVD and asumes that the user is familiar with other DVD authoring features od DVD-lab Pro.
http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=220092

Select the 'connection' option under projects
Right click on the DVD movie as show in the screen-shot below and select the 'UOPs & Settings" option

Select the browse button for 'Line 21 CC' and select the scc file you just created

This should add the closed captions to your DVD.

3. Verify that the created DVD has closed captions

Open WMP and select the VIDEO_TS.VOB file from the VIDEO_TS folder that was just created using DVD-lab pro

From 'Play' menu select 'subtitles and captions' and check the 'closed captions' option

This should display the closed captions.

Thanks

From CapFaq:
"Generally speaking, subtitles are intended for hearing audiences and captions for deaf audiences. Subtitles may translate the dialog into a different language, but rarely show all of the audio. For example, captions show sound effects (e.g., "phone ringing" and "footsteps"), while subtitles don't."

BTW...nice guide.

So I assume this guide would work equally well if say I wanted to add English subtitles to a DVD that currently only has French and Dutch subtitles? Or is there some other guide more suited to this purpose?

This guide is to add closed captions (line 21) to DVD....

Use the link below to a guide for adding subtitles to DVD : http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=219535

This didn't work for me. Created the SCC file successfully, selected it from the UOP dialog in DVD-lab Pro 2, it compiled the DVD... no captions. DLP2's verification log does not indicate anything wrong - but there's no indication of CC being added to the MPEG either...

Any clues from anyone would be appreciated... Thanks.

Create a graph with line21 decoder and check for closed captions, your graph should look something like this:
