How to convert .flv (flash video) to .avi or .mpg
| hitrec posted 2005 Feb 25 05:29 | ||||||
| Some sites have flash video’s online that play in your browser, if you have the correct plugins.
Thanks to Veblin, I learned that these video’s are stored on your HD (most likely the Temp Internet Files), and that they (sometimes) have the .flv (FLash Video) extension. The .flv files play fine in the latest VLC player (v 0.81) or a dedicated FLV player like http://www.martijndevisser.com/archives/000021.php I wanted to try to convert to avi or mpg and could not find a guide on videohelp, so I did some research of my own. This is A way, it worked for me, and I would like to share it with you (helping this fine board to help others). I use the RivaFLVencoder; http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?encoder&L=3 which is freeware and it’s based on the FFMPEG encoder (normally it is used to create .flv files from .avi or .mpg, but it can do the reverse too). There is also FlixPro by Wildform, but that costs about $150. Download, install and open Riva.
Klick the Browse button in the Input tab and locate the .flv file you want to convert. Klick the Browse button in the Output tab to select the location to save your output. The default outputname will have the extension .flv (after all it is an FLV encoder) but just click it and change the extension to .avi or .mpg
Then adjust the encoding parameters for both video and audio to your liking
Make sure you check the box Enable Audio or you’ll end up with a mute video. It’s possible that the .flv contains an audiocodec that will not be transcoded. A solution for that is to play the original .flv and record the audio with Audacity (for instance) and to mux that recording with the .avi or .mpg you get from Riva. Just experiment with the settings, but don’t expect miracles. With the correct settings, you can now hit the Encode button
The FFMPEG window will popup
When FFMPEG is done with the encoding, this window will close and (hopefully) you have an .avi or .mpg. The .avi is compressed with FFMPEG’s divx codec, as far as I know. Again, this is only a way of converting that I tried and it worked for me. It might be possible to use only FFMPEG, but I’m not familiar with it’s commandline, so I’m gratefull for the GUI of Riva. Someone out there might have a much better solution, but he/she did not post a guide. Special credits and thanks to Veblin of the streaming forum for pointing out some things to me. Anything which keeps the quality????

You're going from equivalent of MPEG4 or better down to MPEG, some sort of quality LOSS and MASSIVE increase in size is expected.

| It's true that the Riva FLV Encoder does a great job on converting FLV to Avi or Mpg, but not all FLV files are compatible.
I recently download a FLV file that, while it plays perfectly, the Riva program can not convert it to neither Avi or Mpg. It gives out errors relating to codecs compatible and the such. I even tried CinemaForge and that program can't convert it either. Just to be sure that the Riva Encoder was still working correctly, I converted another FLV file without any problems. Which now proves to me that the problem is with that FLV file. Was this file made with a newer, updated codec? If so, then what would that codec be???? Is there a way to add updates to the FLV Encoder program? Or is there a better (Superior) program that can also convert FLV to Avi/Mpg but has the latest, newest codecs already installed? Any help will be appreciated?

| when i try Riva, if i add ".mpg" it encodes mpeg-2 video, but no sound. if i add ".avi", i get MPEG-2 sound, but messed up (or NO) video. SOLUTION: encode BOTH, them "MUX" using VirtualDub with "Direct Stream Copy" for audio, choose vid codec for AVI. if you encode the MPEG2 file (in Riva) at 2000 kb/s, then re-enc using 1000 kb/s (or less as needed), it should turn out ok.
UPDATE: for some odd reason, if i set the settings to: .MPG 320x240 framerate:30 bitrate:2000 audio bitrate:128 sampling:44100 STEREO it converts OK! then i can do whatever with it. i think it was the "STEREO" setting that did it, but it's something to try! good luck all!

| Hi,
I have two flash video files which are actually .exe files. Is it possible to convert those and how?
| Ai Haibara posted 2006 Apr 27 20:12 | ||||||
| Perhaps, but you'd need to extract the SWFs from the EXE projectors, first. (Note that there are utilities out there that'll do this for you, but I don't know what they are - I've only ever done it manually. :D)
Second, the SWFs have to have FLV video streams within them. (If the FLV streams are encoded using VP6 rather than the FLV codec, that can cause problems with converting as well, I believe.)
| darkflux posted 2006 Apr 28 08:53 | ||||||
| Ai Haibara is right, Gregg, there are programs that can "extract" the SWF data inside other files, but it's rather cumbersome to learn, and quite a process at that! i gave up on trying to learn it after the first DAY! you can try if you like; try searching google for "swf extract" (in quotes), or something similar. you'd be better off though, trying Camtasia Recorder to just screen capture the video (and audio), for this situation. SWF .exe files weren't meant to be decompiled, but quite simply to provide an easy way to play SWF files without a separate player. your PC (P4 3.0Ghz correct?) should be able to handle the moderate load required to screen capture quite well, as i have a similar PC at home. | ||||||

im new to this program.. i just downloaded this i read from the guide as above that for input, i choose the flv.file but why cant i choose flv files ? when i klik browse (for input), message box will appear and i try to locate my flv files but this only shows me video files and under type of files, there none choice other than "video files' so how can i use this program to convert flv to avi?? which one better, Riva or Super? thank you
| darkflux posted 2006 Apr 30 09:39 | ||||||
| Iv3_imt,
1. be sure you're browsing in the proper folder (the one your FLV is in). 2. be sure your FLV has the .flv extension on it (sometimes you can download them without it adding an extension). 3. you can also drag & drop the file into Riva. this has worked for me. FLV files SHOULD show up when browsing. they do in mine, this is why i mentioned checking that the filename ends in .flv

| since it's relating to the same problem, i think it's okay...
anyways, VirtualDub works with both avi and mpeg files, however, it only CREATES avis. it's kinda tough to find a freeware MPEG editor, so if your file doesn't NEED to be mpeg, i'd stick with VDub. otherwise, you might try Womble MPEG Video Editor. it's one of the few programs that doesn't need to re-encode the video to add or delete audio files.

are there any guides here in regard to this? thank you
| darkflux posted 2006 May 01 11:56 | ||||||
| here's a basic guide to cutting and editing in VDub: http://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubedit.htm
but basically, for what you need, once you've opened the file in VirtualDub, go to the Audio menu, and click "WAV Audio". then select the file you want to add. this will replace the current file. if you want it re-encoded, the "Compression..." option in that menu will do it.
| Iv3_imt posted 2006 May 02 06:34 | ||||||
mm..bit confused here.. so first i opened the video file and do the next step as u told and then i have to open other file.What file do i need to open?the audio file? i dont join any video files and what does re-encode mean?
| darkflux posted 2006 May 02 08:54 | ||||||
| sorry, guess i didn't speak plainly enough :oops: :wink:
1. open the original fanvid in VDub. 2. replace the existing audio (with your audio) by using the "WAV Audio..." option in the Audio dropdown menu at the top. 3. re-encode means to encode the file differently, like changing it from a WAV file to an mp3, or something... you see, AVI files are only "containers" for compressed VIDEO and/or AUDIO files. when you "re-compress" a file, it slightly downgrades that file. but if the file you open using VirtualDub is an MPEG file, it MUST be re-compressed (using the "Compression..." option in the Video menu). if you want to change the "Audio Compression" to mp3 or ogg, or whatever else, you first must select "Full processing mode" in the Audio menu, then "Compression..." is no longer "greyed out" in the Audio menu. this may all seem a bit confusing and cumbersome (especially to those who've never done it before), but once you understand the "basics", it seems alot less cumbersome :) oh, and if you are using an AVI file to start from, be sure to change the option to "Direct Stream Copy" under the Video menu. you might consider reading the following to "bone up" on conversions using VDub: http://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm http://www.ryan.com.br/virtualdub_en.htm http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_procedures.htm#Audio_options http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_procedures.htm#audioencoding if there's anything you don't FULLY understand, you may either disregard it, or if you're TOTALLY lost (we've all been there), or just ask someone here! we're mostly pretty nice, but if you have anymore questions OFF the topic in this thread, of course, you should start your own NEW thread. i hope this helps :)

I had my settings at like mpeg-1, mp2 audio, at like 1100, but the file size was like twice or three times as big as the flash. What is the best format and settings to get very similar video quality and sound? Thank you.
| darkflux posted 2006 Jun 08 19:42 | ||||||
| MPEG files are notoriously large, when requiring close to the same quality. unless you're going to burn the video to DVD, i recommend going with AVI, or else you will be dealing with large files. here's what i do:
for MPEG: settings: Size-640x480 (you'll need to re-encode @ 720x480 later) Framerate-29.97 Bitrate-2000 Audio Bitrate-128 / 44100 for AVI: settings: Size-640x480 (or 320x240) Framerate-30 Bitrate-1000 Audio Bitrate-128 / 44100 NOTE FOR AVI: you must first encode as MPG file with avi settings (but keep bitrate at 2000 for mpg file), then use your favorite avi encoder (mine's VirtualDub 1.6.7), and encode with the same settings (preferably DivX). even though you are encoding TWICE for AVI files, encoding @ 2000kb/s will retain most of the quality. this is the only way i've been able to encode an AVI successfully. also, the settings reset after closing and reopening Riva (even though they appear the same), so you must click and set them how you want each time you start up the program. hope this helps someone. df

| Yeah, this helps a lot! Thank you. Will it maintain a low file size if the file is not divx? I hope to put this on disc someday perhaps, and Divx is pretty hard to work with. | ||||||
| kschang posted 2006 Jun 09 00:48 | ||||||
| It's NOT AVI in itself, but the codec used inside the AVI. DIVX is similar to MPEG4 in terms of encoding efficiency. You can use the open-source equivalent XVID, or any of the other codecs available. | ||||||
| darkflux posted 2006 Jun 09 04:27 | ||||||
| i'm afraid that if you want to retain the quality of the AVI file, DivX is the way to go. MPEG-4 is "slightly" better quality than DivX, but is even less compatible with programs when re-encoding (working with) files. XviD is becoming more popular, and has more customization for file quality, but is more "complex" to work with (unless you're more comfortable working with AVI's), and has about the same quality as DivX. DivX is the current unofficial "premiere" codec for AVI files, [NOTE: disregard the 'autolink', i'm not talking about Adobe ;) ] and even some DVD players are supporting the DivX standards (and even some XviD files). the only REAL problem i have with DivX is that unless you register it (read: PAY THEM), you get the DivX logo in the corner of the video when you play it. it's not encoded in the file though, just the codec, so unless you encode your AVI's to something else without registering, you should be fine, and if you ever DO register, you can keep the logo from appearing.
sorry, a little long-winded, there. if you really think you'll be burning the file(s) to DVD eventually, you might keep an MPG file version(s) burnt to CD-R for future reference (they're releatively dirt cheap anymore), and keep an AVI copy on your local hard drive for sharing, or whatever.

| I just tried Total Video Converter and it seems very easy, lots of choices and simply worked.
I see that it cost $45 A heck of a lot less than the other commercial products mention for $100 or $150, which is WAY to high. I do loads of conversions, especially into Divx format (version 6.25 is spectacular) and I use Virtualdub for about everything. If virtualdub can input a .flv file, THAT WOULD BE great and certainly the way to go. I am very used to de-muxing the audio to a .Wav file, then I go through the video and audio compression/conversions and load them in as batch jobs. When I'm ready, if I have a two pass job, there are two little Vdub scripts waiting for me in the Vdub job cue. I just tell it to go and leave the PC. What is also great about vDUB is that If I need to use the PC, I can lower the priority of the job, temporarily while I check mail or do whatever I have to do, then I will set it back to normal. I am very much taken by outputting to the lastet Divx 6.25. I play a lot of Divx on both of my Divx compatible DVD players and watch on TV. They look great. Jon

| For some more information.
I was really happy to see that the newest (it was a total re-write) of Divxlabs open source, free converter, Dr. Divx, will take .flv files with no problem. Dr. Divx is an auxillary product that is a freeware creation of Divx Labs. the demand was very high on it, so it was re-written. http://labs.divx.com/DrDivX?cmdrdivx20lg Also, good news that the Divx Labs version of Dr. Divx uses the latest Divx 6.25 encoder. The encoder converts a lot faster and with a heck of a lot better output. The Divx 6.25 encoder with the help of Vdub has created a situation where I have been re-encoding every Xvid video I have. It just looks better, sounds better, and works well on all Divx compliant stand alone DVD players. I fooled my son the other day who always would tell me how easy it was to spot a compressed video Divx file from the original DVD. I have to agree with him ...before. there always was some grainyness in the picture. So I played a 15 minute Divx video, then I played the same 15 minutes from the original DVD. I told them, I played them in the opposite order that I told him. It was very hard for him. He really could not see differences. It is important though to always do the two pass encoding and I have some standards on creating settings on Vdub and Divx 6.25 Pro in Vdub that seem to work really well. Using the two pass makes a big difference. A last item is that there is a free Divx web player. So, I can put Divx videos on my web page, then the DivxLabs site creates the code I need, as it embeds the video. When selected, it starts immediately, like the Flash connected applications, while it downloads the stream. the Divx Web Player is new (version 1.0) , has some tweaking to be done. The more feedback they get, the better the product will be. I mention this because they are giving away free, the latest Divx Pro pack, version 6.3, for anyone who tries the Divx web Player and gives them the hyperlink. Here is the link to the Divx Labs info on the Web Media Player. About half way down the page, it explains the offer of the Free version of the Divx Pro 6.3 bundle. http://labs.divx.com/archives/000072.html

Download Fly Player It is very file, but a nice way to look at any .flv files you have created or downloaded. It is not a complete player application by a longshot. But it is tiny and plays a .flv file very quickly. None of the typical Windoz overhead. When someone wants me to download a .flv video, I use the greasemonkey extention in Firefox. I have used SUPER and changed the frame rate of the original nad have had it worked. I wish the FLV filesweer less myserious so I can understand on how to make the output settings in a better way. The only time I have had synch problems is when the original was not in synch. I like checking out the download .flv file in the little FLV Player to check the synch, etc. I like to use the Foxfire add-in Greasemonkey to download .flv video. I have found the best results has been in then taking the .flv on encoding it into with Divx 6.25 using the new version of Dr Divx. I will increase framrate, remove some noise if necessary and usually I like to make the Divx output about 640 x 480, that is if it correspnds to the original I tell Dr. Divx to do a two pass. SUPER seems to also complain about an unsupported codec or says there's damaged header or truncated file. But the same thing happens virtually with all flv files from YouTube.com.
I saw a similar post in this thread a while back, but didn't see a solution, other than a suggestion to try the latest SUPER (of which I've tried: v2006.build.19) and had no success. Just not with those files I've grabbed ftom my temporary internet directory after playing videos on YouTube (and a few other sites as well). Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with converting flv files obtained from YouTube? Is YouTube using a new set of codecs that both RivaFLVencoder or SUPER are not yet aware of? Or is it possible the opposite is true, that they use an out-dated set of codecs? Regardless, is there a way to obtain and install these other codecs so that I can convert these flv files? Does ffmpeg and mencoder come bundled with SUPER.... coz I'm not sure if I have'em :? Are they softwares/tools or codecs?
| celtic_druid posted 2006 Oct 20 22:18 | ||||||
| They are software/tools with built in codecs. For instance most of ffdshow's decoding comes from libavcodec which is part of ffmpeg.
As far as I know it comes with them. Never used it myself though.

| Here are a couple of batch files I've used with FFMpeg to make DVD mpeg2 and avi. So far I've had no sync problems. If you have Riva or SUPER, or Gui4FFMpeg, you have FFMpeg.
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\FFMPEG\ffmpeg.exe" -i "c:\path\to\file.flv" -hq -target ntsc-dvd -b 6500 -aspect 4:3 -s 656x448 -padright 32 -padleft 32 -padtop 16 -padbottom 16 -acodec ac3 -ab 192 -ac 2 -mbd 2 -qmin 2 -async 1 -y "c:\path\to\newfile.mpg" Paste this to a text file, renamed ".bat". Change the path to the location of your copy of ffmpeg.exe, the path to your FLV file, and the path of your output MPG. If you have Celtic_Druid's FFMpeg builds, take out the "-hq" after the file name. It may not work with SUPERs FFMpeg, it does work with Riva's. No other changes are needed, but you can make adjustments if you want, and all the quotes are required. "-b" is bitrate. You can insert "-maxrate" after it, something like "-maxrate 8000" or whatever you need. The "-pad" lines are to beat overscan. They can be changed or removed, and the "656x448" changed to compensate. "-acodec" is set to ac3, "-ab" is audio bitrate, "-ac" is number of audio channels. "-qmin" and "-async" I don't fully understand yet :) This one is the same idea for two pass, also it makes it interlaced, top frame first (compatible with my Pani ES20 mpegs, for editing): "C:\Program Files\ffmpeg.exe" -i "c:\path\to\file.flv" -hq -target ntsc-dvd -bf 2 -ildct -ilme -top 1 -dc 10 -b 6500 -maxrate 8000 -pass 1 -passlogfile "log_name_here" -aspect 4:3 -s 656x448 -padright 32 -padleft 32 -padtop 16 -padbottom 16 -acodec ac3 -ab 256 -ac 2 -mbd 2 -qmin 2 -async 1 -y "c:\path\to\newfile.mpg" "C:\Program Files\ffmpeg.exe" -i "c:\path\to\file.flv" -hq -target ntsc-dvd -bf 2 -ildct -ilme -top 1 -dc 10 -b 6500 -maxrate 8000 -pass 2 -passlogfile "log_name_here" -aspect 4:3 -s 656x448 -padright 32 -padleft 32 -padtop 16 -padbottom 16 -acodec ac3 -ab 256 -ac 2 -mbd 2 -qmin 2 -async 1 -y "c:\path\to\newfile.mpg" The top and bottom half are identical except for the -pass number, it's all one script. "-bf" includes B-frames (the first script above makes only I and P frames). "-ildct" and "-ilme" make interlacing. It's progressive without them. Both may not be required, not sure. "-top 1" for top frame first. remove it for bottom frame first or non interlaced/progressive. "-dc" for dc precission. "-passlogfile" doesn't need a name, but it doesn't hurt :) Here's a couple to make avi: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ffmpeg.exe" -i "c:\path\to\file.flv" -hq -vcodec mpeg4 -g 300 -b 900 -aspect 4:3 -s 320x240 -acodec mp3 -ab 128 -ac 2 -mbd 2 -vtag xvid -qmin 2 -async 1 -y "c:\path\to\file.avi" for mp3 audio, and this one: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ffmpeg.exe" -i "c:\path\to\file.flv" -hq -vcodec mpeg4 -g 300 -b 900 -aspect 4:3 -s 320x240 -acodec pcm_s16le -ab 900 -ar 44100 -ac 2 -mbd 2 -vtag xvid -qmin 2 -async 1 -y "c:\path\to\file.avi" for wave audio. I've tried SUPER and Riva but my machine isn't hot enough to run them (700MHZ just won't cut it). Gui4FFMpeg makes a batch file that gave me the clues to figure these out. Here's hoping someone finds this useful.

| Download and install FLV Extract
Download and install VirtualDubMod. Download and install HuffYuv codec. Download and unpack these to the VirtualDubMod Plugins folder: . MSU Deblocking v2.2 filter and MSU Denoiser v 1.6.2 filter ********** First use FLV Extract. This little program gives you an avi and mp3 in about 2 seconds from your .flv file. Simply run the program and drag and drop your .flv file onto it. It extracts the avi and mp3 to the same folder. Load the avi into VirtualDubMod then go Streams - Stream list - ADD and load the mp3 audio file. In VirtualDubMod go Video - Filters - Add - and add both msu deblocking and msu denoiser. The default filter values should be fine. Again go Filters - Add - resize. Enter New Width: 512. New Height: 384. Filter Mode - select Lanczos3 or Precise Bicubic{A=1.00} . Check the box "Expand frame and letterbox image" then enter width: 720 and height: 480. In VDMod go Video - Compression - select Huffyuv codec. I usually set huffyuv to 'Field Threshold = 480. Go File - Save As Avi and save out the new file. This will give you a filtered huffyuv avi file with mp3 audio with a 720x480 letterbox frame with a 512x384 video inside it. You can stretch the .flv to full screen but it will look like crap. The idea with the letterbox is to make the flv file look as good as possible. Take that avi file to your mpeg2 encoder and use a DVD template. Good luck. you might also need ffdshow. Install and set it to decode flv1. (With ffdshow I only let it decode what I want it to, nothing extra. In your case only FLV1)

You need to download and install ffdshow. Enable decoder for FLV1 in both VFW Configuration and VIdeo Decoder Configuration. ----------------- FLV Extract will give you an avi file that VIrtualDubMod can load. It won't load the original .flv file as is. Install ffdshow and enable decoding for FLV1. VirtualDubMod is needed because you will need to multiplex the avi and the mp3 audio. It is the only virtualdub version that will do the multiplex. Use the filters to clean up the video. Use the huffyuv codec so you can get the muxed - filtered video file out of virtualdub without loosing quality. then encode that in your mpeg2 encoder using a high quality preset - ie the DVD Preset. 720x480 8.0Mbps video 256Kbps 48,000Kbps audio. Follow the list and you shouldn't have any trouble. Good luck.

| ffdshow is a very handy addition. I look at it like a bundle of encoders and decoders in one wrapper. It won't hurt to install it but like I said above - - - I only enable decoding for the file types "I" choose and when I choose them. When installing ffdshow I uncheck everything listed. AFter installed I then run the configuration boxes and enable what I need. In this case only FLV1. BUt you need to enable it in both the configuration boxes - VIdeo Decoder Configuration and VFR (video for windows) Configuration box.
The avi should then open in VirtualDubMOD Good luck. ![]()

Start - All Programs - ffdshow - Video Decoder Configuration: at the top - codec scroll down to FLV1 = set to libavcodec (that is now enabled) apply and close Video Decoder Configuration. what i do now is i encode it through Dr. DivX then reencode to Pocket DivX but still it does not have the same quality from the original flv file

| As far as hosting flv files to view them, you need to have them in a swf. If you have macromedia flash you can quickly import the flv file and then have it embeded in an swf. Otherwise, you need to convert it to another format as flv's can't simply be viewed like other video files.
As far as video conversion. I have tried numerous times to convert videos from www.halloweenhorrornights.com/orlando but I have had no success. The best thing so far was total video converter which isn't free and leaves a nice watermark. I have tried others like super, but I keep running in to the same problem. | FLV4 conversion
To be able to load an FLV4 video into VirtualDub I had to first demultiplex it using FLVExtract v1.2.0. This gave me an AVI file (flv4) and a MP3 audio file. This version will work FLV4. I then opened FFdshow version November 22,2006 both Video Decoder Configuration and VFW Configuration and set VP6F = libavcodec VirtualDub could then work the file. I instead used VirtualDubMod so I could also load the MP3 audio file in the Streams - List. Setup my filters then saved the file out as HuffYuv for further processing to whatever I decide then. Good luck. Make sure which you have before conversion, FLV1 or FLV4. They are different. Easiest way to do this is to demultiplex it using FLVExtract v1.2.0 then load the AVI part into AVICodec. It will tell which you have. @seijiro Thanks for the kind words. lol You can use any method/etc you like but the thing to remember is to use a high enough bitrate to retain the quality you have now. Clean - high quality video can still look good when using low bitrates because they are clean and easy to compress, but most any FLV conversion is going to need plenty of bits because the low quality - blocky - noisy - etc video isn't going to compress very well. This lack of compressibility is why most any low bitrate conversion will look worse then the original FLV file even when the new bitrate is higher. Or something like that anyway. lol Because the new bitrate must be high enough to also retain the compression artifacts and noise in the original FLV.... besides the video. Good luck.

I went to myspace.com and clicked on the first video I found at random. It would not play on my computer, nor would AVICodec give me the information on it. GSpot did process the file and reported it as: File Type: Flash Video (.FLV) Mime Type: video/x-flv Compatibility Warning: - Sorenson Type 8 FLV I then demultiplexed the file using FLVExtract v1.2.0. GSpot then reported the FLV file as FLV4. I could then play the video and AVICodec could work with it also. AVICodec also reported the video as: FLV4. To play FLV4, as I said above, simply enable ffdshow for VP6F. After enabling ffdshow VFW to decode VP6F VirtualDub could then open the video stream. Without using FLVExtract to demultiplex the file I could not play it or open it in VirtualDub. After the demux, and after enabling the proper items in ffdshow, I could play and edit the video. Also this FLV file contained VBR MP3 audio. Like I said the original would not play on my computer using my normal players. I loaded both my extracted video and my VBR audio into AVIMUX GUI and let it create a new file. This FLV4 (unconverted in any way) file plays in all my players now with no problems. Good luck.

| @Scorpion King, you are amazing. Your guide and patient explanations are very detailed and helpful. I even have and use some of the tools you mentioned including VirtualDubMod. However, my problem is twofold. (1) I am looking for an easy fix for converting FLV files to AVI or MPEG or even WMV, the operating word being 'easy' at this moment - sorry :( don't be exasperated (2) GSpot says that my FLV file is FLV1 (grabbed off YouTube using the VideoDownloader extension in FF2.0); I believe your guide pertains to FLV4s. Would you have any ideas? They are always welcome.
@Baldrick, before you remind me :D yes, I have used the latest available version of Super (c). However, just as someone mentioned early in this thread, I am getting an audio video mismatch (out of sync). I confess, I was playing Super by the ear - setting the video and audio specifications as best as I could. I hope you can offer me an insight into the default settings. I was going for the AVI container with either DivX or XVid codec and MP3 audio. I understand from the Super website FAQ that this may be because of a mismatch between the settings of an input FLV and output AVI (or whatever). Does anyone know how to get those settings from an FLV file? Peace. suirauqa EDIT: I forgot to add the I tried someone else's method of changing the .flv extension to .avi, but it did not work (I did not think it would, but just gave it a try all the same :oops: ). I also tried VLC Media player's transcoding wizard, trying AVI one time and WMV at another, but ended up with much larger file size (which I don't mind) and pixellated video (which I do).

| Converting FLV to AVI or MPG or whatever is easy regardless if it's FLV1 or FLV4 or FLV?????, pretty much the only difference is which decoder to enable in ffdshow.
FLV1 needs the FLV1 decoder enabled in ffdshow in both configuration dialogs because: 1= so it will play on your computer and work in AVICodec and 2 = so VirtualDubMod can work with the file type. Here is a ffdshow configuration example: Set FLV1 = libracodec in both dialogs.
If you have FLV4 files then you need to enable ffdshow's decoder for file type VP6F. Enable it by setting VP6F = libavcodec. You must also do both of ffdshow's configuration dialog boxes just like above so you can work the file type in VirtualDubMod. That is the first step in the process. You should now be able to play your FLV1 files in Media Player Classic. To get the file into VirtualDubMod you must first demultiplex it. This means to separate the video and audio into separate files (streams). For this process I recommend you use FLVExtract v1.2.0. Download and install this version because it will also work FLV4 files. FLVExtract is a simple one box program. You open Windows Explorer to the folder containing your FLV file then run FLVExtract. FLVExtract stays on top of explorer. You simply drag and drop your FLV file onto FLVExtract and it will automatically demultiplex it to the same folder. The video will have a file extension of AVI, but it will still be an FLV. The audio will have an MP3 extention (most likely). FLVExtract in the foreground with Windows Explorer in the background: I drag&drop sample.flv onto FLVExtract and it created the streams and the text file. The video stream has the extention .avi, and the audio extention is MP3. The text file is .txt.
Now that I have my decoder enabled in ffdshow and my FLV file demultiplexed I am now ready for VirtualDubMOD. Run VirtualDubMod and load in your demuxed FLV video stream (in my case it's sample.avi). Next click "Streams" then "Stream List" then when the box opens click "ADD" and select your demuxed MP3 audio. It will look like this:
Next comes a simple conversion to HuffYuv AVI. Huffy is looseless so you loose no quality in the conversion. The filesize will be large but after this step any of your encoding/editing program will be able to open and work the file type. VirtualDubMOD is a cool program because you can add filters at this point and clean up the video. You can also filter the audio to some extent in the program. You can resize your FLV also in this step, or you can just do the simple conversion to Huffyuv then do all that other editing later. Click Video - Compression - Select Huffyuv from the list of available compressors (if it is not there you need to download and install it), then click OK. I also recommend you convert the audio if you are planning on later going to DVD with this file. So once again click "Streams" then "Stream List" then Right-Click your audio stream and select "Full Processing Mode" (because VDM was going to simply stream copy - not convert - your audio), then right click the stream again and choose Conversion. Now choose 48000Hz, 16bit, High Quality, and Stereo. Click OK. Again Right Click your stream and choose compression then choose PCM, then OK the streams list box. To summarize. We set ffdshow to decode our FLV. We demuxed our FLV using FLVExtract. We have loaded our demuxed video and audio streams into VirtualDubMod. We set the video to convert to Huffyuv avi codec. We set the audio to convert to DVD specs and to convert it to PCM (no compression wav). Now export your huffyuv avi by clicking File - Save AVI. Give it a new name and go. You should now have a new file that will play in any of your programs. If you decided to filter and/or resize, etc then you can close-reopen VDM (to clean your changes back to default) and load in your new huffyuv file. I have tried a few different filter arrangements and types but these seemed to work ok. Heres a photo of my filter list. If you don't have them a quick google search will find them easily.
Good luck and hope this helps. a few other links you might want to look at. http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1599408&highlight=#1599408 http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1618736&highlight=#1618736 http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1611052&highlight=#1611052 Things that can make this process a little harder are: VBR (variable bitrate) mp3 audio This requires full processing mode to pcm in VDM. (just like above). Using my above steps should work ok. As my sample.flv file had VBR mp3 audio and it converted in sync. When you add the vbr mp3 audio VDM will pop-up a dialog box stating such, and since we are going to avi in this conversion selecting "Yes" to this box should be fine.
Non-standard framerates If your FLV file has a non-standard framerate (other than 29.970 NTSC) and you are planning on going to DVD with the file then you need to add a framerate conversion step to the above. in VDM click Video - Framerate - Framerate conversion - Convert to FPS: and enter 29.970 (for us in the USA). Then OK the box. With the other settings above this should work ok. As my sample.flv file used 30.1fps and it converted fine. I have also did 14.9fps in this fashion (also with VBR audio) and they played in sync and were fine. Since I am no master of FLV conversion (and don't claim to be) this process may not work on all your FLV files. It has been working fine on the FLV files I have converted so far. lol

I try doing it, but end up with ridiculously huge files, I'm kind of new to encoding video, so I know I'm just missing something. But I would appreciate the help. I also have Total Video Converter, but even that yields some large video files. For example 1 minute of video might be 8 megs, but the flv might only be 1 meg. Any suggestions would help. so far, i have downloaded an flv file from youtube. i can play this fine in an flv player. but what i want to do is convert it to avi so i can open it in movie maker and media player. i've got the riva flv encoder, and i used the help here to convert my flv file to avi, but when i try and play it there is sound but no video in media player. i saw that this had happened to someone else here, but i tried both solutions offered - total video converter= the download doesn't seem to be availabe from that link anymore, and super= for some reason my computer won't download it. i don't understand what is meant when people say to convert it to an mpeg file also and then mux them, i get the theory, but not how? the other thing i don't understand is what ffmpeg is, and it's mentioned quite a lot, so seems to maybe be vital to what i want to do? if it affects anything, i use divx. so can anyone help me with how to get picture for my video?

the fix use 'FLV Extract' to demux the audio and video load the demuxed video and audio files into AVIMux_GUI IF AVIMux_GUI reports the .mp3 audio file as a VBR then you will get A/V sync problems with some players* Load the .mp3 file into 'lamedropXPd' and it will make a .wav file of the audio** Load the .wav file into 'lamedropXPd' and it will make a .mp3 (CBR) file of the audio Mux the video and CBR audio with AVIMux_GUI to make an .avi this .avi is now playable in media players (you may need 'ffdshow' to view if you don't have the correct codecs AND this .avi is easily loaded into 'VirtualDub' and can be converted into the format you desire) *the problem was some of these files obtained were VBR and converting them into Divx to play on my DVD media player caused A/V sync errors and other problems ... making the audio into CBR and using AVIMux_GUI (over VirtualDubMod to remux) fixed this **set lamedropXPd to "restrict encoder to CBR" and target bitrate of 128

| Ok, so let me get this straight, the S in SUPER as in the SUPER video converter program stands for simple???
So I download this program figuring it would be SIMPLE to use, and when it starts this is the screen I see:
NOTE TO MARKETING DEPT AT SUPER: You suck. Lets get one thing straight, when the screenshot looks like the cockpit of a 747, its not simple. Period. Dilbert had a cartoon once about a simple computer. It only had one button, and they pushed it before it left the factory. Thats simple. While I realize that it may take a little more than that to convert from flv to a real format that one can use, I don't expect to have to have a 4 year degree in software compression theory to convert a file. Here's another clue. If a software package ever uses the word codec, its not simple. its highly doubtful that it even works. I have know Idea what a codec is and anytime I've tried to use any software that so much as mentioned codec it has never worked. So rather than ask yet again how to go through the maze of options for SUPER or any other ridiculous unnecessarily complicated software package, I submit to all exactly the model for all conversion software: http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/ screenshot:
http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/screenshot1.htm It finally did what it was supposed to do, take an flv and make a new file that was (well I only tried) wmv. While it didn't claim to be simple and I did have to do two steps, (1: download the flv to my disk 2: convert the downloaded flv file to a wmv file) but it worked just fine. I was so happy to find a program that actually worked and didn't need me know WTF a sampling freq is, I even sent the donationware site the $5 they ask for (but in no way insist or nag for.) 3 cheers for someone who actually knows how to write good simple to use software.

To begin with, I want to say that while I wasn't totally on board with jleslie48's rant, I downloaded "YouTubeDownloader" anyway, and it's really quite good! Nevertheless, based on all of the positive writeups on Super, I downloaded it, too, to check it out. I installed it, ran it, and nothing happened. NOTHING. I see no windows, processes (I use Process Explorer), or anything. I tried both versions, i.e. from the author's site (yes, it's badly designed, but 25 years in IT helped me along), and the videohelp mirror (which is a bit older), both do the same. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, with the same results. Anyone else have the same problem? Oh, by the way, I also tried WinFF, and liked it a lot, though still found a significant loss of quality when converting from .FLV files. Salutations, -Paul

| IMHO, some files are corrupt.
If the file is not corrupt, it can be loaded into avidemux and the container changed from flv to avi(no re-encoding) and the avi should play correctly. In case avi is not playing correctly, check the fps of both the original and the avi with MediaInfo. If they are different, load the avi in virtualdub. Use the stretch audio filter to adjust length of audio correctly(audio will have to be recoded to mp3 at 11025,22050 or 44100 HZ sample rate). Set frame rate of video to that given by mediainfo for the original flv(video will not be recoded). Edit if you wish,(remember to cut at keyframes only), and save corrected avi. If you want to save it as a flv, load it in avidemux and change the container to flv. You can convert the corrected avi to anything that you wish.

| Hi,
Going back to the original subject, converting .flv files to .avi, the Linux users amongst you do not need fancy GUI programs. The below script is simple, quick and produces good quality conversion by using 2 passes. Cut and paste into a suitably named file and do 'chmod a+x filename' to make script executable I use ffmpeg and convert to .avi because it seems to be the most stable, quality loss free method. Using mencoder I sometimes had sync problems. Also dvdauthor can create a DVD filesytem and .VOB files from .avi directly, without intermediate conversions to .mpeg2 etc regards Melee ########################################## # Batch conversion of all .flv files in current directory to .avi # Requires ffmpeg and Perl to be installed # Produces 720x576 which displays full screen on pal tv # # ( Value -target pal-dvd can be substituted with ntsc-dvd if you are in US etc) # ( Value -aspect 4:3 can be changed also - see man ffmpeg for valid aspects) # ! /bin/bash for i in *.flv { ffmpeg -i $i -pass 1 -target pal-dvd -aspect 4:3 $i.avi #### -y switch is to overwrite output file from first pass, so no halt and prompt ffmpeg -i $i -pass 2 -target pal-dvd -aspect 4:3 -y $i.avi } rename -v 's/\.flv.avi/\.avi/' *.flv.avi # end of script #################################################

Note, it may seem limited (based on the list in the drop-down menu) in frame sizes and a bitrate of 450kps, but these can be increased by selecting the option (checkbox) to modify the output settings before converting. The conversion process is a little slow, and the trial version is limited in output length.

| Ok, I'm just new to this forum and found out about SUPER; seems that a handful are having problems with this software, too.
I've had no problems through and up to the conversion of an FLV video file (been testing out a few Youtube vids for tryout). Converting an FLV with selected Output Container as "avi" and Output Video Codec as DivX (have tried with MPEG-4 & 1) and Output Audio Codec at Mp3; the flv file appears to convert, and plays smoothly until halfway through the video, which seems to have been rushed or cut out: Played in DivX player, instead of a full 4:31 min vid it turns out with 2:11 minutes. Played on Windows Media Player, at 2:11 minutes past through - the graphics rush to its ending, and does show the full supposed time (4:31 min). I have tried converting the source file again and I get the same issue. Could this a fashion of the conversion video/audio going out of sync? I've tried messing around with the settings and get the same result. At average the settings are: VIDEO: Encoder: ffmpeg Video Scale Size: Selected to No Change Aspect ratio: none selected Frame/Sec: 25 Bitrate kbps: Set to around 240 or 288, due to the Multimedia Analysis Box reading I attempted to stay as close to the original stats. Options: Selected are Hi-quality, Top Quality and 48k Audio AUDIO: Sampling Freq: 22050 Channels: 1 Bitrate kbps: 96 DVD Language: Default Basically, last video attempted was 4:31 minutes, FLV file saved at 8.5 mb. Converted into 4.3 mb as avi video file. What I'd like to figure out is what is causing, or how could I get around this video conversion messup. Feedback very much appreciated!

It's default setting, but... better set original FPS. Check file properties used MediaInfo and/or eventually SMPlayer (Ctrl+I). Any sample file (uploaded example on http://kotuha.com) or link?

| This program works great. Latest version apparently keeps bbmpeg's work hidden as no window comes up. Also I dont know what the bbcode comment refers to. | ||||||

| Hey there, this is my first post, as I was looking around the other day trying to figure out how to convert You Tube flv videos into avi, and I came across this site after searching, I downloaded Riva, but I just thought that I would try and rename the flv file to avi, and I did, and it opened up in Windows Media Player no problem without any converting!!!
So my question is why is there all these conversion applications online when all you have to do is change the file extension from flv to avi??? Try it out yourself, I didn't think it would work, and prior to changing it from flv, it wouldn't open up in media player, only my VLC player would play the files I downloaded from you tube, but as soon as I changed the file extension, viola, I double clicked the file and up opens windows media player!

Odd... :| I'm not need change file extension and can play FLV's in WMP. Of course i'm have installed required DirectShow filters (FLV Splitter and ffdshow). Without required splitter You can't open FLV's - even if You change extension. Without required audio/video decoders You can't play FLV's - even if You change extension.

| I do have a bunch of different codecs installed, I use the k-lite codec pack so maybe that's why it works on my PC, I have tried it with a bunch of flv files that I have downloaded from You Tube and it works like a charm, when I first download them and leave them with the flv extension they won't work in media player, but once I change the file extension they work just fine.... | ||||||

And it's odd... Maybe You just have disable asking dialog about support unrecognised extensions...

| I have to say, I used VLC Media Player to convert my FLVs to MP4 for my iPod and I have to say, VLC did an incredible job. When I watched it at full screen with Nero ShowTime, it looked better than when it was FLV. It was totally blown away.
And VLC is FREE!!!!! I did not convert to anything else like AVI but it does all them. You click "File" | "Wizard..." | radio button "Transcode/Save to file" | Next | "Choose" | "Browse" to FLV to convert | OK | NEXT Click check box "Transcode Video" | MPEG-4 Video Click check box "Transcode audio" | MPEG-4 Audio | Change Bitrate to 32 or 16 or you will not get sound NEXT Select radio button MP4 | NEXT Name file: C:\newVideo.mp4 Finish THAT EASY!!!! AND THE RESULT WAS AMAZING!!! And for an easy way to download FLV videos. If you install RealPlayer, it will download them automatically in IE with a link above the video in the top right of the video. Does not get much easier than that.

| actually i dont know what i'm talking about....
please disregard my question, i think i have more homework to do. sorry... :? :oops: hi high post- using vlc, can you tell me how to convert flv to mpg so i can burn a dvd that will play on my friend's standalone dvd player? i have been trying to convert youtube files for at least two weeks now, used lots of programs that wouldnt work at all, Any Video Converter does convert but then i cant burn the file on ashampoo, it says the encoding is bad and sometimes other errors. i assume the problem is either the original video flv files cant be converted to mpeg (is that possible?) or certain converter software cant handle them. or i could be pushing the wrong buttons somewhere... i tried to wing it with the vlc following your directions substituting what i thought would be right for creating an mpeg but again got a file that ashampoo doesnt like. could it be i am doing something wrong in ashampoo? here is a failed conversion log from the mozilla download helper program, i dont know if that will explain my problem to you, i hope it helps. i spent six weeks downloading 52 episodes of a pakistani tv serial for my friends (i have a slow connection) thinking that was going to be the hard part! ------------------------------------ episode 3 Entry date: 29/09/2008 19:09:40 FFmpeg version SVN-r11213, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-memalign-hack --enable-libamr-nb --enable-libamr-wb --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libgsm --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-liba52 --enable-libx264 --enable-libxvid --enable-swscaler --enable-gpl --enable-avisynth --cpu=i686 --enable-pthreads --enable-shared --disable-static libavutil version: 49.6.0 libavcodec version: 51.49.0 libavformat version: 52.2.0 built on Dec 13 2007 21:42:07, gcc: 4.2.1-sjlj (mingw32-2) Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 1000.00 (1000/1) -> 15.00 (15/1) Input #0, flv, from 'D:\Documents and Settings\SALIMA\My Documents\My Videos\tanhaiyan\3 episode.flv.htm': Duration: 00:07:48.3, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 48 kb/s Stream #0.0: Video: flv, yuv420p, 320x240 [PAR 0:1 DAR 0:1], 15.00 tb(r) Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 22050 Hz, mono, 48 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Stream #0.1 -> #0.1 [mpeg1video @ 68C432E0]MPEG1/2 does not support 15/1 fps Error while opening codec for output stream #0.0 - maybe incorrect parameters such as bit_rate, rate, width or height Conversion failed

| Hi everyone,
I tried SUPER as it seemed to be the programme most on this forum recommended, (in case it's not glaringly obvious, I'm a complete idiot on all technical issues) didnt have a clue what i was doing and yet I had no problems converting, I know I have no idea everything SUPER is capable of but thanks to good advice and clear idiot proof instructions (!) I successfully converted numerous files, it wasn't as scary as it looked initially! Big thank you for excellent advice!! :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

| Whenever I convert a .flv to .avi the result video file has text on the screen that shows audio track info and current bit rate info etc How do I remove that? The original .flv didn't have this info displayed on the screen but the converted .avi does. If I convert to .mpg the screen info isn't there just if I convert to .avi... | ||||||

| Is the info display there if you play the .avi in a player that doesn't use VfW/DirectShow codecs or filters, like VLC?
Sounds like you may have ffdshow installed, if you're running under Windows, and the OSD (on-screen display) options active. If so, go to ffdshow's folder in the Start menu, and open 'Audio decoder configuration'. Make sure there's no checkmark next to 'OSD' in the left pane. Click OK to close the window. Repeat the process with 'Video decoder configuration', to be sure. Then, try playing the AVI again, and see if the information display is still there. |
