| Well done. I do alot of Xvid conversion of episodic TV shows for my laptop and handheld as I do extensive travelling for my job. I have two different methods that I favor, both of which use different tools than you describe. I would not say better, just different. I like to rip with either DVDShrink or SmartRipper (an ancient ripper that has some nice features), and then I like to use avi.net over AutoGK for speed converting the files to Xvid.
Good job writing the guide.

| Thank you for this this was both simple and free! I just wanted to say to speed up the ripping proccess I created a batch file ( I am not sure how complicated this would be to explain) but I found that it was nice to put in a disk and walk away come back after 20 minsa and change disks
This is what I have:
You can add as many of these as you like and run it from the command line. All anyone would need to change is the "/SRC G:", to what ever drive leter yours is, and the "/DEST "C:\_Installs\Working\Smallville\Smallville S2e17"", to where your files are going to be stored. The other two things are the "/VTS" and "/PGC" these will depend on your DVD so if it is all the same series it should be the same but I would check the disk to see prior to ripping. If you would like to add any of this you are more than welcome to, your guide was helpful, it would be nice to have the info all in one place. -Reg

| Great guide... Q: How does AutoGK cope with widescreen or full screen titles, trimming off bars from letterboxed material or badly sized stuff or with resizing anamorphic 720*576 into say 640*352 Xvid ? | ||||
| kschang posted 2006 May 26 10:18 | ||||
| From what I remember, AutoGK takes the first few seconds of the film and runs a black space analysis, and comes up with an auto-crop value, that'll trim the black bars. But you can customize that in the options, I think. | ||||
| Cheekie_Moonkie posted 2006 May 26 11:00 | ||||
Just to back up kschang's comment: AutoGK will maintain the aspect ratio, following the information it receives from DGIndex (which is one of the applications that comes bundled with, and is used by, AutoGK). If DGIndex, for some reason, detects an incorrect aspect ratio it is possible to override it using the "Aspect ratio" setting within the 'Hidden Options' (Press Ctrl & F9 in AutoGK to access). So, if the source is mis-detected as 4:3 or 16:9 then you have a choice of manually setting the correct aspect ratio. AutoGK also auto-crops the black space that you sometimes find in the margin of DVD video, but it still maintains the aspect ratio! :-) So, using this 4:3 example and using the same settings as in this guide: This 720x576 .VOB:
...would become this 640x480 .AVI:
It may appear to you, in this example, that AutoGK has cropped more from the top and the bottom than the left and the right, but this is correct as there was a lot of black on the left and right in this .VOB, so AutoGK has had to crop a similar amount from the top and bottom to maintain the aspect ratio, else the video have would become "squashed" (for want of a better term). It is possible to tune the auto-crop feature, by the way, from within the hidden options (which I mentioned just now), but personally I find the defaults work perfectly.

| Karen Navratil here, What a great "HOW TO" you made!!! I wonder if someday you can
make up a "HOW TO" on converting VOB shows recorded from TV and commercials edited out to DivX/Xvid. I've tried DivX convertor, Dr. DivX and a few others and they all come out looking very poor, sound is not sync to picture by 2 to 8 seconds and for a 1 hr.30 minute movie I get file sizes from 300 MB to 1,500 MB. I'm new to all this encoding and pulling my hair out. - Tks Karen

Hi Karen, I'm sorry to hear you are having issues. I gather you have already searched this site for a guide? There are some like this which may help: http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=904#904 Unfortunately I am going to be without internet access for the next few weeks. If you cannot find a guide on this site and if you haven't done so already, post to the "How To Request" thread (http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=97743) detailing in full what it is you want to be able to do (as in what files you want to convert, and what you want to convert them to - file type and/or codec). If nobody comes up with a guide (or points you in the direction of an existing one), drop me a line and I will have a look into this when I get my internet access back and see I'll see if I can help you out. You'll probably need to give the details of the hardware and software (if applicable) you are using to capture the TV shows, in case there are any known issues and/or work around for getting perfectly sync'd video and audio. | Subtitles Problem Hi, I followed your tutorial step-by-step, but without installing the batch files, and even though I can chose the subtitles option in autoGK and the preview button shows them, when the episode is converted and i watch it in media player classic or WMP or on my DVD player, the subtitles wont show. I check the subtitles files in agk_tmp and they're both there: an idx file and sub file. Subtitles used to work fine, before I changed the settings in DVD Decrypter to the ones you recommend here, do you think this is what's causing the problem? EDIT: Version 2.37b of AutoGK fixes it. I tried another episode from friends and the subtitles showed well.

| I have used the guide with great succes. Thank you for making it almost foolproof.
However, I have encountered something odd when I have converted files from DVD to xvid. Sometimes when I click on a file, it displays an error and crashes to the desktop closing all Windows windows. I have tried to re-convert the faulty file from scratch but the problem still remains. Have anyone heard or experienced anything like this and more importantly, do you know what to do?
| jimmalenko posted 2006 Nov 23 05:53 | ||||
| I believe that this may be a problem with the xvid codec itself, and/or the way WMP uses it. I have some xvid AVIs that do this also, yet others play fine. I can play the "faulty" files in VLC without a drama so it makes me lean more towards a WMP problem. I'm yet to work out exactly what causes it. | ||||

| thanks for your tut! auto-gk is really a good choice. it takes a load of work (comparing to gk itself) but without a loss of quality or usability.
still I felt in need of making my own batch which meet more my requirements: this is my tribute: http://in.thedoghouse.bz/downloads/batch/tsmda-0.2a.zip why? your batch had some probs: 1. not simple enough! 2. have to change to many things in the batch 3. lazy to type in >20 dirs. so what does my batch do? 1. it will ask for title (e.g. Buffy), season (e.g 01) and episode number (e.g. 20) [ typing "SKIP" as title will skip this procedure) 2. with a loop it will create dirs "TITLE".S"SEASON"xE"EPISODE(1toN)", for example: Buffy.S01xE01 Buffy.S01xE02 Buffy.S01xE03 etc... NOTE: it will place a 0 on episode numbers lower than 10 (01, 02, 03, 04, 05, etc...) 3. the batch will pause and you can start ripping the dvds into the dirs and start auto-gk 4. when auto-gk is finished, press any key in the batch, now the batch will rename the containing .avi in the dirs (made bei agk) to the foldername and will move each avi into the folder "all" (so if you want to burn all avi's you will have them all just in one folder).

Hi samandangel, I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you as I haven't come across this specific issue. If I was you I'd try playing the .VOB in a player (like Power DVD) to see if the audio-sync issue occurs within the actual .VOB. If it does, the issue is likely to be with the DVD or DVD Decrypter. If it seems ok, then the issue is likely to be with AutoGK. You may find that there are 'Cells' in the DVD that DVD Decrypter may be ignoring, which is causeing the issue. If you think that might be the case, have a play with the "Uncheck Suspect Cells" setting. You could also try a different ripper. If all else fails, you could try to fix your .AVIs. After a quick search I've found the following guides (there may be more), which seem contain information on fixing audio-sync issues: How To Fix Audio Sync Problems 102 How to fix gradual loss of sync once and for all VirtualDub procedures (Doom9) (See "Manual synching" section)

Hi pooplefronk, What are you using to play the files? Did you have any success with jimmalenko's suggestion of trying another player? I use WinAMP to play XviD. I don't tend to get any issues with it. If changing players doesn't help, what version of AutoGK are you using? Are you using the latest version (currently 2.40)? You could try converting files to DivX, although I personally prefer XviD.

| Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't look like the DVD Decrypter batch file can handle DVDs with non-sequential episodes? That is, one VTS with one PGC per episode, but they're, say, VTS 2 & 9. (Farscape region 1, BTW. These DVDs embraced Murphy's Law during the authoring process. :P) | ||||

I followed your guide and downloaded DVD-Decrypter and AutoGuardian. I am trying to rip a DVD-R on which 6 eps have been burnt. Thing is, DVD Decrypter recognises the DVD-R (meaning that the tracks are shown) but the Decrypt button never gets highlighted. Should I be using some other software for ripping DVD-R's ? I cant play this CD in Windows Media Player but I can play it in Power DVD or any other standalone DVD player. I'd be really grateful for any help on the same...I tried Smart Ripper and it rips the actual VOB file for me but that again plays in Power Dvd - I'd ultimately like an AVI file. thanks again for your time, Manjusha
| Cheekie_Moonkie posted 2007 Jan 14 17:03 | ||||
Hi Andrew, If you are talking about DDMFRip.bat, then you're not wrong. As at the current version (1.01), DDMFRip.bat will only rip sequentially. If you'd like me to try and include a feature whereby you can specify specific VTS/PGCs that are not sequential, then I might be able to add a feature along those lines as, in essence, the functionality (I.E. the commands within the script) would be similar to those that allow you to manually enter chapter numbers (when the script is in chapter mode). So, just to get this straight... lets say you had: Episode 1 at: VTS "1", PGC "3", Chapters "all" Episode 2 at: VTS "3", PGC "1", Chapters "all" Episode 3 at: VTS "4", PGC "2", Chapters "all" You'd like to be able to specify the number of episodes on the disc (E.g. 3). Then the VTS for episode 1 (E.g. 1), the PGC for episode 1 (E.g. 3) and the chapters for episode 1 (E.g. "all"). Then the VTS for episode 2 (E.g. 3), the PGC for episode 2 (E.g. 1) and the chapters for episode 1 (E.g. "all"), etc. etc. Is that right? PM me to let me know if that's correct. When I get the time, I will try and add the functionality to the script. If I can get it to work (no promises), I'll PM you a copy to test.
Hi Manjusha, Assuming you have the options set correctly (as per the guide) and that you are running DVD Decrypter in "IFO Mode", you must highlight the PGC you want to rip, before the decrypt button becomes enabled. If you can't get that working, you can of course use SmartRipper instead (in "movie" mode).

1) when I first started with this method, I had no problems (Sopranos Season 5 and 24 season 1). Now the last two discs I have tried (Band of Brothers and Sopranos Season 4 disc 1) are coming in with the audio being significantly lower. Any ideas what might be causing this? 2) Is it possible to extract the episodes from a DVD that you have already ripped to your hard drive by a similar method? Thanks

| Hi-
1. What kind of audio is it? AC3? If AC3, the audio is unchanged from the source. If MP3, not sure why there would be differences between discs, unless an upgrade of AutoGK changed something in the way audio is converted. I have read claims, though, that the audio isn't being normalized. 2. PGCDemux can demux the episodes into audio/video/subs (SUP files), or into single vobs (by ticking "Create a PGC Vob").

| manono,
Thanks for getting back so quick. 1) The problem seems to occur when I rip the disc, before I ever convert it to DivX, so I assume it is still in AC3. 2) Thanks, I'll give that a try.
| manono posted 2007 Jan 19 23:20 | ||||
| Hi-
1. Ah, OK. Then I suspect the AC3Filter or whatever you have decoding the AC3 isn't as loud as you might like. The AC3 at that point is exactly the same as on the DVD. Anyway, I boost the volume by going into the AC3Filter Config and changing the default Preset to Loud.

| What a great guide. For the first time I have been able to successfully convert
a DVD episode to AVI. I do have one question/request pertaining to the DDMFRip.bat file though. As DVD Decrypter starts to rip each episode, I get a dialog box telling me "Possible RCE protection found!" and to select the appropriate region. This is even though there is only one region available for selection (1 USA) and it is preselected. So, is there any way to avoid having to respond to this question for each episode? I have tried it with "Remove RCE Protection" under Tools/Settings/IFO Mode both selected and not selected. Same result. Thanks

| Thank you so very much for this guide. I've got several seasons of various tv shows, and movies. Lots of dvds.
And I wanted to convert them to .avi so I could fit a whole season (for a half hour show) on a single dvd. I've got a divx capable dvd player and am happy with it. Anyway, this is great. Simple, just copy it with dvd decrypt, and then just run it through autogk. One question though, I was reading somewhere about some of these free solutions are not as high quality as some higher end programs. I'm wondering if anyone thinks/knows that this way is as good? I get pretty good results. For instance I converted an episode of Frasier, 175mb. Looks pretty good. But not as sharp as some I've seen with the same file size and running length. Any tips on improving that? I may have confused you all, I'm a little fuzzy myself.

It did work I canceled it & tested the video & it worked. But everytime I try it at a lower size, the 1/4 CD 175 mb or any others, I get the same error: "video compression error: the source image format is not acceptable. (error code -2)" I retried it on the 1400 mb again & got that error on those setting as well. Any idea why I'm getting this error? Did I rip it with DVD decryptor wrong or missing some setting somewhere?

I believe it was something to do with the width in the AutoGK settings. Just above the Add Job/Start/Abort box on the lower right, click Advanced Settings. Then on the output resolutions, try Auto. Or try Fixed and set it at 640, or 512 seems to work well for me.
| usr316 posted 2007 Feb 20 04:40 | ||||

| I would not recommend using VBR mp3, CBR mp3 is better or even better on episodic discs keep the original 2ch ac3 , Most times its at 196k so takes up very little extra space. 384k 5.1 ac3 is a lot bigger tho and should be downconverted. vbr mp3 is bad especially if you try to edit the avi's at some point, will probably end up with lip-synch errors. Ripped dvds (if ripped as iso ) can be mounted under daemon tools and re-processed. A bitrate of 1000kb is good, anything less and the quality starts to fall away. quality based encoding using agk will HALVE your encoding time 65 is reasonable qaulity 70 is good 76 is the canines sperm sacs. | ||||

| I absolutely LOVE your batch file. I use it with megui and it's great!
Here is my dilemma Your batch file allows for: P - Command DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD that has MULTIPLE PGCs per ONE VTS. V - Command DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD that has ONE PGC per MULTIPLE VTSs. Can you make it so that you can do MULTIPLE PGCs per MULTIPLE VTS? I'll explain. Many DVD's split the episodes with commentary onto a separate PGC (since the VOB needs two channels of audio). For example, the one I'm doing now has the first two epidsodes (with commentary) in VTS 1, the next two (no commentary) in VTS 2, and the last one (with commentary) in VTS 3. It would be great to do the "MMULTIPLE PGC / MULTIPLE VTS" so I don't have to run the batch file more than once.

Hi handtruck, Thanks for the compliment and suggestion. I'm glad that you find it useful! A "manual" mode, so to speak, is something I have been thinking about since Andrew posted his question back in Jan. A manual mode (whereby you can specify the VTS, PGC and chapters for EACH episode) should overcome both yours and Andrew's issue. As Andrew didn't get back to me though, I never pursued it. If a manual mode is the sort of thing you think would help, PM me and let me know and I will look into it.

Since I don't know what these files are, I just went with the gorilla method and used the file names as mentioned in your article. Thus I just used the AGK portion of your tutorial and followed those directions. Was this the correct approach or should I have done something else?
At any rate I get a bunch of files, but they don't seem to be what I need and the .avi file is very small and doesn't have the name extension I would have expected. Any thoughts?

| Cheekie_Moonkie posted 2007 Mar 15 11:35 | ||||
mpw777 DVDs don't actually have PGC files. DVDs have .VOB and .IFO files. A PGC is a virtual container within the file structure of the DVD. DVD Decrypter will show you the PGCs in the pane on the right-hand side. In most cases one PGC contains one episode on the DVD. Rather than go at it gorilla style (lol), if you get a copy of DVD decrypter and follow the guide word-for-word, you will end up with .VOB and .IFO files which you can feed into AutoGK. I hope that makes sense?

Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated and will contribute to my sanity. I can obviously use nandub/vdub to go through trial and error to fix the sync but that takes way too long, also I have checked the vobs and they are in sync. thanks agian for your help
| Cheekie_Moonkie posted 2007 Jun 05 15:22 | ||||
Hi Gertsrule, I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I doubt there is a problem with the decryption process (DVD Decrypter), it's more likely to stem from AutoGK. However, there doesn't seem to be an option in AutoGK to correct audio-sync. Have you tried searching the forums for anyone having similar issues? You may also want to try the AutoGK site. If you get no joy, you might need to experiment to try and find the source of the issue, so to start with you may want to try using a different video codec. It's probably a good idea to test things with a small section of video (i.e. only rip a chapter or two with DVD Decrypter) so that you don't have to wait ages for the video to decode. So if you are trying to use XviD, try DivX (or vice versa). You may also want to try CBR instead of VBR (or vice versa). You could also try selecting the "Original" Output audio type option (if you don't mind using the original audio stream). Another thing to try would be single pass mode. To use that simply select "Target quality (in percentage)" on the main screen and use that option. The default quality rating will probably suffice for when you are experimenting. If you get absolutly no joy with AutoGK, you should try another VOB -> AVI converter (it's worth trying to get AutoGK to work first though as it often gives some of the best results). You should find a selection in the "Tools" section of this site. Alltoavi and SUPER are a couple I've come across, but I'm not sure if they support VOB -> AVI and they don't seem as slick as AutoGK. Good luck!

| No, AutoGK just converts to AVI. You'll need a different program (or programs) to create a DVD from AVIs. Maybe try DVD Flick or AVI2DVD. | ||||
| Cheekie_Moonkie posted 2007 Jun 10 14:04 | ||||
vampelle, AVI > DVD is usually fairly straight forward. This guide does not cover that, but there are many guides and tools on this site that do. See these tools and these guides.

| This guide covers the decryption and ripping of TV episodes directly from a DVD. Is any way of doing the same thing, after a DVD has been decrypted and saved to hard drive? | ||||
| manono posted 2007 Jun 26 19:27 | ||||
| If the episodes all have their own VTS, then open the IFO for that particular VTS in AutoGK and follow the guide from there. However, if the episodes are all contained within the same VTS, then AutoGK is going to mess up. If that's the case, use PGCDemux to break them up into their own episodes by opening the IFO, choosing the episode you want, setting up a folder for it, making sure to have "Create a PGC VOB" checked, and processing. Then open the resulting VOB in AutoGK. You'll lose any subs doing it that way, though. | ||||
| matrixpreloaded posted 2007 Jun 27 12:30 | ||||
| Thank you for responding manono. I searched thoroughly in DVDDecrypter, but couldn't find a way of reading a DVD ripped to hard drive. Yes, all the episodes are in the same VTS, so I'll give PGCDemux a try. | ||||
| manono posted 2007 Jun 27 13:24 | ||||
Because there is none. Which is why I suggested the use of PGCDemux, if the episodes are all contained within the same VTS. You could go back and decrypt all over again, this time doing it right. Set up DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode (up at the top, Mode->IFO) rather than the default File Mode, and then you should see all the episodes in that VTS. Decrypt them one at a time, each to its own folder.

A word of caution however regarding your AGK tutorial: I have found that media players using the Sigma Designs chipset don't like VBR audio (which is AGK's default IIRC). If I ever accidentally use VBR I have to change it to CBR (using VDubMod). You may want to change the guide or at least add this caution... Thanks for the .bat!!!!! Very nice!!! :D

| manono posted 2007 Jul 13 17:55 | ||||
Must be peculiar to your player, as it's not specific to all Sigma Designs chipset players. I had one (a Bravo player) and it had no problem at all with VBR MP3. It didn't like packed bitstream, though, and made AVIs play stuttery/jerky.

In the log window, it says "Running compressibility test." for the last 1hr and from procexp I can see that VirtualDub was started. From the arguments, I figured there is a log file option, but I don't even see the file created. Here is the complete log in the AutoGK window

IIRC the very very first time VirtualDub runs there is a nag screen. After you've accepted it, it shouldn't appear again. If you press Alt+Tab you should be able to flick between all programs listed in the task bar. Alternatively, you can sometimes just click it and it will maximise, but sometimes you need to right-click and choose maximise or restore. Glad you got it sorted anyway! :)

Thanks a lot for creating this guide. I am now able to encode the episodes with so much ease following your steps. Before I read your guide, I had no idea about the AutoGK tool and the settings that I can use in the DVDDecryptor to get the episodes ripped as separate files. Your command line options to automate the ripping is also incredibly useful. I am using the sequence of ^O, ^S and ^A along with other keys to navigate the file dialog to quickly add jobs in AutoGK but I will probably create/find a script for that as well.

| Hey I hope somebody is still checking out this guide. This is a new thing for me so I have only just caught on. I have followed the guide and it has worked perfectly for all but a few episodes.
Lets start at the start. I have been trying to Rip FireFly Series 1. (These are original disc's) Most of the ripping and the conversation goes fine, except for 3 specific episodes: Shindig, Safe and Ariel. Shindig and Safe are on the same disc, Ariel is on a different disc. Everything appears to go fine on the rip. (DVD Decryptor). All the .Vob files are more or less the same size. (Give or take 200mb) I would put that down to differing lengths and compression (vob files are about 1.800.660kb) All the Vob files play fine in PowerDVD. Then I rip with AutoGK using your specified settings and the avi files always cuts off early. I have tried checked the settings and retried again always the same result but not always at the same place. Correct avi's are around 1.433.00kb (1.5gb) the other avi's vary in size between 100mb and 800mb. Here is the AutoGK record for one of the faulty avi's 01\firefly S01e04\VTS_01_PGC_01_1.VOB [06/09/2007 20:25:51] Source resolution: 720x576 [06/09/2007 20:25:51] Found PAL source. Hi happypyro, Unfortunately it's hard to define the best codec, as each one will have its own strengths and weaknesses. I've not really used H.264, but from what I can gather it is pretty good at giving good quality at lower bitrates, so in that sense it probably is better (especially if you are using a really high quality source file). If you are after good quality, but small, video files then you should probably check out H.264. If filesize doesn't matter to you though and/or you have a DivX/XviD compatible player then you may want to stick with DivX/XviD, becuase DivX/XviD do still give good result (although filesize may be slightly larger). Maybe you could try converting the same (good quality) source into both DivX/XviD and H.264 and compare the results using a selection of bitrate settings (probably a good idea to go with a short section of video, but possibly some with some fast action in it). To convert a .VOB to H.264, you'll need to use something like AutoMKV (instead of AutoGK). I've never tried AutoMKV, but it appears to do what you'd need it to. So, you can follow the guide up to the AutoGK bit then use AutoMKV. Baldrick's AutoMKV guide should help you to get started, but remember to use the H.264 codec. :-) In the longer term I may do a H.264 guide, so I'd be interested to know how you get on.

I seem to end up with 3 .avis .. one is only slightly smaller than the VOB and is the full episode ( or movie) and the other two are called xxx disc 1 and xxx disc 2 ... now these are like about half the movie each and play fine , but my question .. it must tkae longer to process three avis , and there must be some option I have accidfently turned on that produces both the whole moive in one file as well as slicing it up looks like for 700mb size? whats going on and how do I fix it , and thanks for being kind to the poor newbies :)

| Evidently you specified a 1400MB file size. Those are automatically split into 2x700MB files for burning to 2 CDs. If you don't want it split, specify a slightly different size, such as either 1399 or 1401MB.
The only extra time taken is in the splitting, a couple of extra minutes.

I googled the topic and the first five or six entries led to this page! I've been using CloneDVDMobile to rip tv episodes and the quality is never that good and you have little control over the size of the file. With this method, I rip the file with DVD Decrypter and save the files on the hard drive, then when I go to bed I load up 4 episodes in the queue and when I wake up the job is done. Won't be long and my DVD collection will be digital! Thanks again!!!!

| Hello everyone,
I'm using this guide and I have some questions. I recently bought the dvd-boxes of Lost season 1 and 2. Now I want to convert them to 350mb avi's like the ones that you can download. I used clonedvd2 to copy the largest files on my pc (dvddecrypter wouldn't work for some strange reason; maybe because I also use Anydvd?). I selected the largest files since I think these are the ones that contain the episodes? I then got a few files on my pc.
VIDEO_TS.IFO and then for every episode separately:
VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_01_1.VOB VTS_01_2.VOB Only difference is a 2, 3 or 4 instead of 1. But I think you'll know what i mean. I copied the files for every episode in a separate folder and put in every folder also the VIDEO_TS.BUP and VIDEO_TS.IFO. I'm not sure if I should have copied the 2 VIDEO_TS in every folder but I did in anyway. Now when I open the ifo in AutoGK it tells me that the ifo contains 2 pgc's(??) How can I know which one to choose if they only differ a few seconds in length (they're both around 40 minutes) EDIT: I tried both and it seems to me that I get the same file as endresult?? Is this possible? One more question: You guys use a fixed with of 640 in autoGK (640x368 is the result that I get) but when I look at an episode of Heroes for example it Gspot show an aspect ratio of 624x352? Can someone explain me the difference and what the best aspect is that I should use? I hope someone will be so kind to answer my post. :roll: Thank you!! Ruud

Thanks for the guide - very informative.
| manono posted 2007 Dec 19 02:44 | ||||
| Hi-
Use either one. Just don't use 2.45. 2.48 pretty much goes back to 2.40, but with some additions. It uses the same XviD version as does 2.40. If you're using XviD with the ESS chipset option enabled (for best playback on DVD/MPEG-4 players), then 2.45 was broken because of a funky XviD it was using. If I had to pick one, I think I'd go with 2.48. The guide will still apply. Also, if planning to use XviD, then before installing AutoGK and the XviD codec, make sure you've uninstalled any XviDs you might already have on your computer (Add/Remove Programs).

I've used it to rip a few series on DVD for a while now following the method you describe and have had no probs whatsoever. However, I do have a slight niggle with the file size. Even though I specify 349MB as the output size (Custom Size option), the avi files produced are far from that.....usually around 280-290MB. It's not a major issue as the quality of the files is fine, but I'd like to keep them the same/similar size. Do you or anyone else out there have any idea why my output files aren't what they should be?? I use the Xvid codec, 640 fixed width, and the original audio. Thanks in advance Ghost_rider

| OK, thanks. That rules out a couple of possibilities. The problem may be the version of XviD included with version 2.47 and you should probably upgrade to 2.48. Have you installed any newer version of XviD without first completely uninstalling any older versions of XviD? The reason I ask is that can be a cause for not getting the size you want as well. My suggestion is to go through Add/Remove Programs to uninstall XviD followed by the installation of version 2.48 which uses a different XviD build:
http://www.autogk.me.uk/index.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=4 Also, your log shows you setting a fixed width of 640 and getting a lousy compression test result. Lost is hard to compress. I might suggest letting AutoGK choose the width, choosing a smaller width yourself, choosing a larger final size, using lower quality audio (MP3 instead of the original AC3) to free up more space for the video, or some combination of the above. And since you're getting sizes much smaller then requested, those episodes probably don't look very good.

| Good, I'm glad to have been able to help.
By the way, if you're asking for 349 MB as in the log you provided and you're getting 357 MB, then that's still not close enough. But I'll take a wild guess and say you're really getting 357,xxx KB, which is 349 MB and right on the money.

| I've tried this guide on two different computers, and although I end up with the .IFO and .VOB files in the correct folders, none of the vobs have any audio. Of course I can't even begin autoGK...since the vobs have no audio...any clues as to the settings that could be wrong, or something obvious I'm missing. When I open the VOB in any software (NeroShowtime, VLC...) they inform me there is no AUDIO present in the file. | ||||
| manono posted 2008 Feb 06 16:40 | ||||
| Hi-
If all you did to get the DVD onto the hard drive was to use DVD Decrypter or somesuch, without purposely removing the audio, then you can bet there's audio in there. Open a VOB in GSpot to confirm (or disprove) the presence of audio. If you can't figure it out, post a screen pic from GSpot here. If there really is no audio, then decrypt using DVDDecrypter without going into Stream Processing. The solution to your problem could be as simple as installing the AC3Filter.

| I've got a question.
I've been basically doing the equivalent of this guide for awhile, but I'm not getting the results I've seen others get when creating Xvids. Basically, I have a LOT of TV DVDs I want to compress. "The Scene" DVD rips clock in at: 175MB (for~ 21:30 shows) 350MB (for~ 42.30 shows) I'm currently ripping my THAT 70'S SHOW DVDs, and no matter how hard I try, I cannot get a 175MB encode from ANY episode - and I've played around with the settings. I know the goal of this guide is to go "free", but I'm not above paying for software if I can achieve the above numbers with the same quality "the scene" is doing. Any thoughts or assistance would be GREAT!

Unfortunately DVD Decrypter is no longer developed as far as I can tell. Their site and forums appear to be offline. If there's no good fix for this, is there an alternate software that you would recommend for ripping? I use AnyDVD but don't really have the same level of control that I seem to have with DVD Decrypter. Any help would be appreciated.

No worries. 640 was chosen purely for legacy reasons. I.e. in the good old days a lot of screens would run at 640x480. To be honest, though, you can choose any resolution you like, within reason. As for the issue your having with DVD Decrypter, I'm afraid I've not come across that one before. There are alternatives to it, but as you say, DVD Decrypter is usually about the best. Plus, DDMFRip.bat will only work with DVD Decrypter. Just so that you can be sure it's a DVD Decrypter issue, it might be worth trying another ripper (e.g. SmartRipper) to see how that behaves in comparison. I'd also try disabling any 'region free' software you may be running, and any CD/DVD emulation software as well, as either of those can cause odd problems. Also, as it's moaning about "Administrative privileges", and you say you are using an admin account, it could be your firewall (or other security software) which is preventing the application from having the access it needs.

| Thanks, CM. I disabled user access control in Vista and it seems to have solved the problem. Though it was not prompting UAC when attempting to run, I gather that the program was not "authorized" to be using the DVD drive. When I would do a fresh install, it would prompt UAC. That's why it worked only on the first new install. After that it seems that it needed UAC to allow access but was not prompting. Who could have foreseen the brilliance that I Vista? Anyway, it works now, so thanks for a great guide! | ||||

| I just have to say thank you Cheekie_Moonkie, it worked more or less perfectly.
The reason I wanted to do this is because the only DVD player in my room is my Xbox360 and on occasion I've borrowed DVDs off friends before (Mostly TV shows) and they wouldn't play because said friend had ordered them off Amazon or somewhere else so they were a different region. Aside from DVD Decrypter not working (Well, I set it all up but the start ripping button was greyed out) so I used SmartRipper (Worked perfectly), not really being able to decide on a size (I settled on 290MB, the episodes are roughly 24mins) and having to figure out what chapters were what episode (31 chapters and it ended up being 6 per episode and 31 being some warnings/credits), it was fine. Also, I just tested the first one I ripped/converted and it looks absolutely fine on my 360. Stupid region codes. :/ I'm on Vista too and I used DVD Region+CSS Free as well. It took about 40 minutes for the first episode which isn't too bad, I guess, I imagined it being a little faster for some reason (I have a decent computer). Now I need to figure out automating it (With the batch files provided) and it'll be incredibly easy (Add in streaming to my 360 and it's a good set up :)).

I am having a strange issue and was hoping someone might be able to help. I have ripped nearly all of my Star Trek TNG episodes (~151 so far). I have one particular episode that's really giving me trouble. It's the 1st disc, 1st episode of the 5th season. There are four episodes per disc, and the other three episodes on that disc ripped perfectly. This one episode though, no matter what I do, rips to a "squeezed" aspect ratio. They are 4:3 episodes, but this one rips to 16:9. It is in the actual rip too, not the encode. I tried SmartRipper as suggested but it does the same thing. The actual VOB file it rips is in 16:9 when it should be 4:3. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks again for the awesome guide!

| manono posted 2008 Sep 16 22:47 | ||||
| Each episode is one of the chapters within the same PGC? If so, then probably the 2nd episode begins where the first one finishes off, and the subs do the same. That is, if each episode is an hour long, then the subs for the 2nd episode will begin after the one hour mark, after the 2nd episode finishes when reencoded, so you get no subs. You can confirm (or disprove) by opening the IDX in Notepad and having a look at the timestamps.
The solution is to insert a negative delay into the 2nd IDX/SUB file equal to the exact length of the first episode. This will make the subs move up/forward in time. You can do this using SubtitleCreator, among other ways.

Also, if you're going into the Stream Processing of DVD Decrypter, don't. Decrypt the entire thing in IFO Mode without touching the Stream Processing.

Thank you for the great guide. Your DDMFR program is a great time saver. I have a question for you though. I am trying to use your just the first half of your guide for ripping purposes only. I realize that not recompressing the files will take up a lot of space but I am not that concerned about storage space. I am more interested in ripping my big collection of TV series in as little time as possible with no quality loss. I have successfully ripped the entire first season of Lost. DDMFR worked perfectly and I now have a Lost Series 1 folder with sub folders for each episode containing the correct .ifo and .vob. My question is after that long intro is how to make use of the .ifo file that has been included. As is right now the .vob files play well except that playback software has no idea how long the file is and the chapters are unavailable. I know that the .ifo files contain that info but none of my playback software seem to recognize the .ifo's as usable files. What do I need to do? -Will

| Thanks v. much for this guide - it was extremely helpful and easy to follow. I just have one problem. I ripped a set of 6 dvds with 4 episodes on each and converted all to great quality *.avi files using XviD setting. On a trial with 4 episodes, I used your suggested target file size of 349 MB and ended up with files of around 240 MB. I tried them again with a target of 478 MB and got them at around 380 MB. I used this setting for the whole lot and got wildly varying size results ranging from 280 - 430 MB. Is there a way of accurately setting the end size to be consistent for all given that the runtime on each was 43-44 minutes +/- a couple of minutes?
Thanks, Anteru | ||||

| Post the log for one of the episodes that wound up the wrong size. It's probably a case, though, of an XviD install over an older XviD that wasn't uninstalled first. AutoGK/XviD results should be within a MB or so of the desired size. | ||||

The problem is that the same episode is copied into each "chapter" and the vob's are all the same. I tried to find a solution here on the board but I did not see anyone who has had the same problem. I can copy using DVD Decrypter by only selecting one PGC at a time. A bit slow and tedious so help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I don't understand. That's how you do it. The alternative is to encode the entire thing at one go and split them up afterwards (which doesn't always produce accurate splits). If you prefer putting the entire DVD onto the hard drive using DVD Decrypter in File Mode, then you can split them up afterwards using PGCDemux to separate out the the individual VOB episodes. Either way, though, they have to be split up. I couldn't figure out what the P Option is, but I didn't read much of the guide, either. I guess its whole purpose is to automate the episode decryption, but if you're not having any luck then I don't see any other option for you but to decrypt them all separately. Maybe Cheekie_Moonkie will show up and offer advice.

| Hi! Thanks for the great guide!
I am having a problem right at the beginning though. Everytime I try to use DDTool to backup my Batman Animated Series DVDs, I get this error: "Reached end of VOB file too early" Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

| i started out using the old ddmfrip which is really cool then upgraded to the DDTool Version 2.21 - (4th Jun 2009) which was far easier to use.
however when backing up my TV series DVDs of four or five episodes it will demux the vob fine but when remuxing to a single vob it will just hang there and not move on to the next vob until i go to the windows task manager and end the mplex process.it does not happen on every remux but on at least two vobs every process. it is rare that i can back up a DVD withought this happening. are there any suggestions as to how i can resolve this. it sure takes the fun out of the automation. i am using version: DDTool Version 2.21 - (4th Jun 2009) and pgcdemux recognised as 1.2.0.5 mplex recognised as 1.9.0

| If anyone has the v1.05 version still lying around on the hard drive, please pm me, I'd really like to get a copy of it. The author here seems intent on forcing people to use the new version of the tool, and will not respond to requests for the old tool. I don't need support on how to use it, I just need the tool itself. Thanks in advance for any replies! |
