how is dvd source audio determined to be stereo or mono?

is you encoded a dvd source to xvid and gspot says the audio is joint stereo but someone says its supposed to be mono audio how do they determine that without the source dvd?

You can usually tell from listening to it if it's true stereo or dual mono. If stereo you'll have different sounds from different speakers, especially during music passages; if mono it'll sound like it's coming from one spot in between the 2 speakers. If there's any question you convert to WAV and there are some graphs that can show if it's stereo or mono. DVD reviews can sometimes be helpful, and a historical knowledge of the film audio for different countries can be helpful as well.

GSpot saying it's joint stereo doesn't tell you a whole lot and is next to useless in this regard. You got propered, did you? :)
