How Do I Keep The Amazing Quality When Converting PlayTV .M2TS Files? | ||

I have PlayTV for my Playstation 3 and it let's me record shows in the MPEG2 HD format with the filext of .M2TS. The quality is superb and I think it's the same way a Sony Handycam records it's content. But as most of you know .M2TS isn't the most compatible container to have so I like to encode them to say an XviD AVI or a x264 MKV. But when I watch the converted file the quality is never as good as the original .M2TS file. Don't get me wrong the quality is still better then most but I get this pixelly, blurry, soft looking, weak to be frank! looking picture quality that is not as good as the original. (also this like block looking effect on the intro credits or where ever text appears on screen) I have tried using all different setting combinations on the actual codec's themselves before the encoding process some improve it and some don't but none ever get that original sharp crisp picture. Like I say it's not terrible and I am probably thinking it's worse then it is but it can be cleary seen especially on bright shots. Anyone have any ideas? | ||

| Is the source interlaced?
What encoding settings are you using? Video frame size/resolution, bitrate, etc? | ||

I either use Gordian Knot or Handbrake and I always make sure to either deinterlace in Gordian Knot or "Decomb" in Handbrake. The M2TS files are normally 750 x 576 and Gordian Knot normally crops them to 640 x 352 or something like that. I always go for 2 pass and make sure options like Quater Pixel and Global Motion Comp are ticked and also have my B-VOP'S at 3. I always go by CD Size so my file sizes could be 175mb, 233mb etc and whatever bitrate is chosen by the application itself I go with. I normally go about VBR 160KBPS for audio | ||

| Hey mate, just wondering if you ever have any issues with the audio sync when you encode the .m2ts files. Been trying to convert them for a while now and have finally got them to encode right but the audio's out of sync. Any chance you could write back and give me some tips?

| I've just started playing with my PlayTV recordings. As far as I'm aware the M2TS files contain an MPEG2 video. Is there a quick way to just edit out the beginning and end of the recording (to miss out the adverts) without having to retranscode the file? I'm fairly happy with the size:quality ratio (I can live with 1.7Gb per hour as I will just dump them on my NAS), but the adverts annoy me. Everything I've tried so far just wants to retranscode. |
