| Hello all,
I'm trying to make a copy of my vcd on my imac. The only programs i have are itunes, imovie, quicktime. I'm trying to record it on an empty audio cdr. Could you please give me some pointers? Thanks :? | ||

| [s:8e0b282550]1. Insert the VCD. Wait until it mounts on the Desktop. Do nothing with it.
2. Launch Disk Utility. Select "New image from Folder..." from the File menu. In the ensuing dialog, select the VCD disc you inserted. Save the disc image to your Desktop. Make it a "read-only" image or "master"; don't bother with "compressed" as that will only take extra time. 3. Once the imaging is complete, eject the VCD disc. 4. The image file should now be in the list on the left side of the Disk Utility window; if it's not, drag it there from the Desktop. Select it in the list. Click "Burn". Done.[/s:8e0b282550] edit: Wow! I doubt Disk Utility "from folder" can process a MODE 2 disc correctly, as a VCD has (at least) two distinct tracks that need to be treated differently. When I tried Disk Utility on a VCD, it failed with an "input/output error". A free tool called MissingMediaBurner can image a VCD correctly to bin/cue and burn from that. Read the site for some important pointers. Begin with an empty optical drive. Insert the disc after pressing Start, so that only MMB can control the drive. It's old (2005) and bare bones, but it still works on a G4/10.4.11. Using Toast would be easier, though. | ||

I thank both of you for your prompt response. I too am surprised people still use vcd, the only thing I can think of is some people are very cheap even though buying dvd's doesn't cost that much. It's very frustrating dealing with issues like this. I will try your suggestions. Thanks :) | ||

| There are many millions of people -- primarily outside of the US -- who still watch VCDs. So, while its persistence may be surprising to us in America, it wouldn't be to someone, say, in India. And if you're a fan of HK films, you'll probably have a lot of VCDs, many of which have not been released on DVD (and may never be).
Case is quite correct about Disk Utility. It will not copy a VCD, not no-way, not no-how. MMB is a good suggestion, as is Toast (if you happen to have it). DragonBurn is another tool that will copy VCDs without complaint. So, you have many options. |
