Help with Subtitle Fonts?

aeslis posted 2009 Sep 20 21:50
Hello guys. :)

I've figured out most of what I need to with ffmpegX, but I'm confused about subtitles. I can get them to burn, but I can't get them to burn with the font settings I choose. If I set the settings to a different font and change the position, and then burn, the file that's output has the subtitles positioned differently, but still in skinny, difficult-to-read Arial font, no matter what font I choose. Am I doing something wrong? Does anyone have suggestions as to what I should try? The preview always looks all right, but the finished product never reflects the preview...

There is a known bug in the version of mencoder that ffmpegX uses, it does not respect some of the subtitle settings (font and text encoding), while an older version of mencoder didn't show this behavior. The preview is rendered by mplayer, which does not have this bug.

It is possible to substitute current mencoder for an older one, but if you do then you should be aware that some of the newer functions (H.264?) will not work, as they were not implemented in the older mencoder.

If you install an older mencoder version, then ffmpegX will notice and warn you each launch, but it will work with it anyway.

This older version of mencoder is from the 2005-01-23 package that came with ffmpegX 0.0.9s.

Thank you so much. :) I'll try this out and see if I can get it all working!
