Help with intermittent static play with JVC S-VHS VCR

pukhog3 posted 2009 Oct 10 09:32
Hello-

Just wondering if anyone might be able to diagnose an issue I am having with my JVC S-VHS vcr. Every 15 seconds or so, I lose the picture. It starts to get fuzzy, and then goes to complete static for a second or 2, then comes back to normal. It repeats the pattern approximately every 15 seconds. I tried cleaning the VCR heads and tape path, but that didn't change anything. I also tried different permutations of turning on/off the R3 filter and calibration.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what the exact problem is and if there is anything I can do to fix it?

Is the problem only with one tape or all?

It is with all tapes. And I have gotten it to go away a couple of times, but I can not repeatedly solve the issue. It just hasn't happened a couple of times. That's sort of why I posted here because it does seem like an issue that may be fixable and I was hoping someone may have some experience with this type of problem.

Does the case of the vhs look like a standard case or is it a special one?

Sounds like a rubber issue. Replace the pinch roller and all drive belts and tires. Be sure to take the bottom case off to get at the lower belts. Vcr belts at mcminone.com. 8)

Does it sound at all like it could be a problem with a broken or defective video head in the drum? If not, I will first try replacing the belts. And then if that doesn't work, maybe try replacing the pinch roller.

Does anyone happen to have a service manual for the JVC SR-V10U?

the heads spin a lot faster than once every 15 seconds. if it were a head, part of the picture would be messed up all the time.

I apologize if this is a really stupid question:

Is it dangerous for the VCR to operate the VCR with the case open? I wouldn't think so, but just wanted to check.

Just wondering if I could do a better job diagnosing the source of the issue if I am looking at the internal operation of the VCR and syncing it with the time instant that the static is produced on the screen.

Just a thought.

Thank you for all of the help BTW.

it's only dangerous if you or someone else sticks their hand in it while it's open.
