Forum Routing
guns1inger posted 2008 Feb 27 22:40
This one is for our illustrious host. Does the forum sub-domain route differently from the rest of the site ? I ask because all day at work I have been able to reach every section of videohelp except the forums. For some reason they have been timing out. Obviously I have no problems here at home (or I would not be typing this), but at work, all day, I have been unable to get here. The withdrawal has been horrible.

So thats what you do at work when the boss isn't looking huh ? LOL

lordsmurf posted 2008 Feb 27 23:50
Not to speak out of turn, but they are on different machines and have different IP addresses (as far as I know, at least -- could be wrong).

Baldrick posted 2008 Feb 28 02:38
Yep, different machines. Maybe your boss is blocking the forum server...:)....

guns1inger posted 2008 Feb 28 03:01
I manage the firewall, which is what bugs me. It is the firewall/proxy that is reporting the timeout. Was fine yesterday, not happy today. Will be bouncing the firewall later tonight for maintenance, so if it is the firewall, that should clear it. It could also be our ISP, who I am not a big fan of.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

What happens if you run a tracert? where does it stop?

guns1inger posted 2008 Feb 28 04:33
I'll have to wait until I get in tomorrow (it's 9.30 pm here now). If it is still a problem I will let you know. Obviously I am having no problems from home getting to the forums . . . .

Different IPs, different routes.

All is well again today. At this stage I am chalking it up to an issue with our ISP. Thanks to all for helping.

JohnnyMalaria posted 2008 Feb 28 16:14
FWIW, I've experienced this both from both corporate and home networks.

lordsmurf posted 2008 Mar 02 01:59
Do you have the same upstream provider both at home and work? What happens when you switch the computer to OPENDNS instead of using the ISP/local DNS?

My upstream at work was been getting DNS attacks, lots of searchportal spammy disconnects, so I flipped my machine to OpenDNS inside of VPC, and was able to connect fine.

If you don't want to change the machine's DNS settings, install VPC and do it inside that install session. Assumes XP inside XP on good machine.

guns1inger posted 2008 Mar 02 03:51
Different providers. The proxy at work is Win 2k3 R2 box running ISA 2004. Home is XP, but I had no problems here anyway.
