| MacTheRipper (MTR) is pretty much the gold standard for
ripping a DVD to your HD. Version 2.6.6 is free: http://www.mactheripper.org/ If you want to back up YOUR latest commercial DVDs, you need to join the MTR forum, donate to the developer, and get the latest beta of MTR 3.0 (currently 13e). Once you get the rip onto HD, Toast or DVD2OneX (DTOX) is the choice to compress and burn.

| There is also DVDRemaster (which is great)
http://www.metakine.com and Popcorn http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/popcorn/standard/overview.html

| Stay away from Popcorn if you can. Toast 7 is a better choice. | ||

| Hey don't know if anyone is still trying to get DVD shrink to run on a Mac, but I just found this awesome link:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/668414 If you have Leopard, then you can use DVD shrink on your Mac. And best of all, it's totally FREE. I tried it and it works. :)[/url] ![]()

| It requires Darwine (which is also free) or, if you already have Parallels & XP installed, DVD Shrink should work nicely there, as well. | ||

| I just spent a few hours going through the steps posted by DVDshrinkforMac and it was beautiful. It was helpful not to just go flying at it without reading what people had to say. got a little tricky with the Darwine thing...had to update my "wine" thing and also add something for open source to run 'the bagel", but it worked out well without any real frustration. I have to admit, it's 2:30am, I've been at it for about 4 hours and I have to go to work very soon, but I'm a very happy novice video junkie now. Got confused with the Dvdshrink.exe being a windows app....But Darwine takes care of that. Thanks for the GREAT INSTRUCTIONS...play by play, exactly as it all happened on my end. | ||

Or VMware Fusion + XP inside OS X (10.4 or higher, I know for certain). |
