Download

dts2ac3.zip

Requirements -

1) Avisynth

2) .Net 1.1 Runtime http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Microsoft_NET_Framework_11/1016688677/2

Instructions

1) Unzip dts2ac3.zip
2) Rename your dts file to INPUT.DTS . Place in same folder as Dts2ac3

It will look like this

aften.exe
BePipe.exe
DTS.avs
DTS2AC3.bat
INPUT.DTS
libaften.dll
NicAudio.dll

3) Double click on Dts2ac3.bat . AC3 file will be named OUTPUT.AC3

That's it! Just make sure you install Avisynth and have .Net 1.1 runtimes installed

My DTS file is 791MB , 2:33:11 long but the AC3 output is only 62MB and 18:54 long

I did evrything that you told me is there anything else?

DVD with DTS only is illegal. DVD MUST have either PCM or AC3 audio in addition to DTS. The only DVD I've ever seen like this is that I have the Hong Kong DVD of Jackie Chan's _The Myth_ and the soundtrack is only available in DTS but it has an AC3 track of movie commentary by Jackie and some others. I think this film was also released in a cheaper version without DTS. That's the only film I've ever seen that doesn't have a true AC3 or PCM film soundtrack, but the AC3 commentary satisfies the requirements of not having only DTS on the disc.

I'm guessing that what happened is that you downloaded a Divx/Xvid file with DTS only sound and converted it to DVD. If the method above doesn't work, you'll have to either find another download with AC3 sound or buy a copy of the DVD with AC3 sound. I got tired of not being able to play DTS tracks, so I finally just bought a receiver that could play DTS and life is good. You could also consider buying a new DVD player that supports DTS as some do have DTS decoders. When you download files, there are no guarantees that you'll be able to play them without problems and as they say, you get what you pay for.

daemon22 posted 2007 Mar 01 08:08
so there is no way to convert DTS to AC3 even if its STERO insead of 5.1?

Thanks! :)

Rockas posted 2007 Mar 10 05:38
Have you tried my tool? DAudioK

I haven't personally test it... don't have any DTS sample at this moment... but please give it a try.
As soon as I can, I'll make some tests myself.

xycer posted 2007 Mar 26 05:22
hi Rockas.

i too am trying to convert DTS to AC3. i tried dts2ac3 and the output was also not complete.
i then tried your program, but i get this error:
Run-time Error '6':

Overflow

i have the dts file, opened it with DAudioK, set output to ac3, selected 6ch, 48000 and 448kbps.

Rockas posted 2007 Mar 26 14:49
Can you cut a little chunk of the DTS file and send it to daudiok_at_gmail.com (_at_ = @)?
Currently i don't have a DTS file to run any tests :-(
If you can't, tell me... I will search my DVD collection for a sample.

Thank you

Rockas posted 2007 Mar 26 14:53
Ok... sorry... just found a DTS track to run some tests...
I'll do them tonight
and Maybe release a version that supports them correctly.

I will release in a few minutes a new version that shall be able to transcote DTS to all the other output formats supported by DAudioK.

30 to 45 minutes is shall be out.

xycer posted 2007 Mar 26 18:38
Hi Rockas,

the new version worked, however, the channels seem to be crossed, as the voice seems to be coming from the right speaker. this may just be my source and maybe it was poorly done. but i will e-mail you a sample shortly. since the file is too large to e-mail, i will upload it to a file sharing site and it will give you a link to download. it is not TOO big, so don't worry (~15mb).

again, your work is greatly appreciated.

edit: sent.

Rockas posted 2007 Mar 27 04:09
I got it... thank you.
I also sent you a little sample for you to test.
It's from a good source that way we may be certain about it.

I sent you that sample 'cause at the moment I can't test it, I'm away from home... that way I can continue working if you don't mind to run that test :-)

thank you

Jaybeam - Welcome to the forums. As a general rule we discourage people from digging up old posts and adding to them. Don't make a habit of this, but I would say that in this particular case it was not totally wrong to do so. However, a new post would also have been OK.

Please note that some of our members do not bother to check threads after they contribute to them. They move on to new subjects. Hi everybody.

I'd read many topics on this forum and i never suceed that operation (DTS to AC3).
I've tried DKaudio, dts2ac3, besweetGUI, MeGUI ... and nothing of those software gave me a result.

With MeGUI i've got an error in the DirectShow filter.
With DKaudio the DTS import give a windows error which close the program.
dts2ac3 realize a 800ko file (but with an another file i suceed) ...

I've installed ffmpeg, avisynth ...

So Can you help me to convert my DTS file ? :D

Thanks

Simple it is, but I get an error when trying to convert a DTS file to AC3.

It says that number of file, directory or volume label is not valid. What did you use?

@carlmart - follow the steps and the screenshots in this post, but for step 6, select "ac3" instead of "wavs"

Thanks. It worked like a charm.

Do you know of a good way to increase levels in the AC3 files, but having some sort of level indicator so as not clip anything?

Thinking again it might be better to do that on the dts file, which has higher bit count and should be less lossy, don't you think? Any way to check and change levels on a DTS file?

You can't do it to the dts file, unless you re-encode to dts with surcode. So the normal procedure would be to adjust it upon encoding to ac3

You can use avisynth and normalize() which amplifies to 100% without clipping (max peak). I don't know the corresponding option in eac3to - I don't think it can

BeHappy and MeGUI (based on BeHappy) are avisynth based encoders and will do this dts=>5.1AC3 conversion with the option to normalize

If you use MeGUI, you don't even have to learn avisynth to do this, just set the program paths, and enter the .dts directly into the audio section and configure the options (i.e. normalize%, bitrate, etc....) it will automatically script the nicdts() input source filter for you

Another difference is eac3to will remove the dialog normalization by default (you can disable it), the other method does not. Usually dialog norm removal is sufficient (test it out for yourself)

For pc playback, you can adjust the ac3gain in ac3filter

My friend, I have done this last week for the dvd of LOST WORLD which had 5.1 DTS track and I wanted 5.1 Dolby track. The steps I used are as follows.

Extract the 5.1 DTS track from dvd by using " DVD AUDIO EXTRACTOR". You will have to buy this programe. This will give you option to extract 5.1 DTS to 6 mono wav files.

Open these files in Sony vegas. Check the configuration as the extracted audio does not specify the FL OR LFE channels. That you will have to find out. Then configure thro' vegas . Apply suitable gain or you will feel volume too low.

Render as 5.1 ac3.

Open Tmpgenc and open mpg tools. Here you can mux the new file with your original mpg2 video

or

Open Tmpgenc dvd author and open new project. Open video mpg2 and in place of audio select the newly made audio ac3 file and you can burn the new dvd. Chech for audio mismatch with video as I had a mismatch of 3 sec though I have processed everything in NTSC format. Now I am struggling to correct that as it starts prfect but misses the sync somewhere in between.

Kindly let me know the result.

I successfully converted a DTS audio track into 6 WAV files using eac3to as in the link poisondeathray posted.

How do I convert the 6 WAV files into an AC3 audio track?

Thanks,

There is no need to generate 6 mono wavs, that's only for input into surcode for dts creation (those screenshots were for the other thread topic, how to generate mono wavs) ; just select AC3 as output save as type, instead of "wavs"

You can go straight from 5.1 DTS to 5.1 AC3 with eac3to either command line or with the GUI. Command line is actually very easy e.g. if you wanted 384kbps:

eac3to input.dts output.ac3 -384

tbean posted 2009 May 06 07:50
When I use eac3togui or the command line you provided, I get the following:

"DTS-96/24, 5.1 channels, 2:04:18, 24 bits, 1510kbps, 96khz
Decoding with ArcSoft DTS Decoder...
Encoding AC3 <384kbps> with libAften...
invalid sample rate
Initialization of the AC3 encoder failed.
Aborted at file position 262144."

It looks like eac3to doesn't like the bit rate of the DTS file which is why I separated it into 6 WAVs.

Do you have any other suggestions about what I can try?

poisondeathray posted 2009 May 06 09:23
eac3to -input.dts -output.ac3 -resampleTo48000 -down16 -640

Basically you need to downconvert the audio to 16bit and 48000khz to be "legal" for AC3. Change the bitrate if you want to whatever instead of 640

tbean posted 2009 May 06 11:07
Thanks poisondeathray, the command line worked like a charm.

I normally use eac3togui and had no idea how to overcome the error with it. After looking at your command line, I assume I could have selected 16 in the "Downconvert To (14-23 Bit)" control and 48000 in the "Resample Audio To..." control and have gotten a successful conversion. Is that correct?

I think that's what you would do in the GUI. Note the GUI hasn't been maintained in a while and isn't offically supported so it might not work properly. I'm not a big command line fan, but for simple conversions I prefer using it

I wonder

Is there any tool that automatically extracts DTS track from an MKV, convert it to AC3 5.1, give it some normalization or something like that, remux all back together to a new MKV ?

I'm not asking for eac3to or similar, but something simplest, basic and easy to use

I can do that easy GUI for soopafresh scripts, if there is any interest, no big deal, just for help

I have few large AVI files with AVC Video and DTS Audio. They play back n forth for some reason and it has another audio track which is creating mess when played. No matter what channel u select both are audible, so I converted them to MKV removing the other audio track and converting DTS to AC3.

I would like to know which one is better DTS 6.1 or AC3 5.1 :?: Shall I leave the audio as DTS 6.1 :?:

I use only PC to watch movies

Do you have a surround sound PC system? Are you planning on viewing and playing through an Audio Receiver in surround sound? If your answer is no to both, then (IMO) use AC3 2-ch stereo...

walnoot posted 2009 Aug 08 05:15
Guys, if you wanna convert DTS-audio to AC3-5.1 or just into AC3 2-ch stereo, use only ConvertXToDVD 3. It is simple, quickly and gives finally a perfect result.

zoroaster posted 2009 Oct 18 12:59
for MKV files that contain DTS audio I use MKVtoVOB. I transcode the DTS to AC3 448K and I am given the option to transcode the video, but I deselect it. just choose your output file format and you're set to go. works well for Western Digital TV players.
