Do you follow the Guiness Book of World Records?

| So are you into the Guiness book of world records? Do you follow it at all? Do you read it?
I see these posted on news websites occasionally but rarely if ever read the whole article. How about you?

| BEER please :) :) | ||||
| gadgetguy posted 2009 May 26 17:24 | ||||
| No. | ||||
| yoda313 posted 2009 May 26 17:26 | ||||
:D Well that didn't take long to be chosen :D :D :D I wonder if that will top over 50% when the poll has run its course......
| redwudz posted 2009 May 26 17:34 | ||||
| I'm afraid I voted for the beer also. :oops: :lol: | ||||
| Number Six posted 2009 May 26 17:40 | ||||
| Way to go redwudz :) :D | ||||

| I didn't read down that far, but I probably would have still picked no, don't care. | ||||
| freebird73717 posted 2009 May 26 18:08 | ||||
| I don't like beer so I picked no. | ||||
| usually_quiet posted 2009 May 26 18:27 | ||||
| I voted "Other". If there is something in the news about a record being broken I generally read, watch or listen.
[s:209da5b1d8]Guinness brews stout not beer[/s:209da5b1d8]. OK I retract it

Close enough - Beer, Ale, Stout :wink:

| Da Beers! | ||||
| edDV posted 2009 May 26 21:45 | ||||
| All I can find in the fridge is Miller Lite. Somebody helped themselves to the good stuff. | ||||
| usually_quiet posted 2009 May 26 22:06 | ||||
| I'm not really much of a beer drinker either Yoda, but my brother-in-law is. Too bad he took the rest of the Samuel Adams variety pack back home with him. Othewise we could have a tasting featuring ale, lager and stout. :) | ||||
| Xylob the Destroyer posted 2009 May 26 22:14 | ||||
| It was incredibly fascinating to me when I was about 12-13...
I outgrew it quickly though. It's really all pointless crap and a lot of it is more luck or (bad) genetics than anything else.
| edDV posted 2009 May 26 22:21 | ||||
As we would expect from an alien robot. Why does today seem like Friday?
| Baldrick posted 2009 May 27 04:56 | ||||
Same here. Now I just "follow" world records in track and field athletics.
| guns1inger posted 2009 May 27 06:17 | ||||
Yep. Fascinating at 10, stupid by 12. It is full of freaks, unfortunates, people with way too much time on their hands, and very little of it actually adds to the sum of human value.

| Is it meaningless drivel in the great scheme of things? Most of it, yes.
Is it cool to tuck away a few factoids for future reference? Most of the time, yes. I can take it or leave it, honestly. My kids have the books and I do catch myself thumbing through them every now and again. It's fun. I equate it to most of today's comedic movies - i.e. mostly meaningless shit, but sometimes fun. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
| Dv8ted2 posted 2009 May 28 13:47 | ||||
| I chose no, because I have no interest in how many spiders someone can eat, or how many times someone can pull a bus with their hair. It is mostly meaningless drivel. It ranks right up there with Ripley's Believe It or Not. | ||||
| TJK1911 posted 2009 May 28 14:26 | ||||
Like others, I think this pretty much hit the nail on the head. I wore out a paperback copy when I was a kid - consequently most of my knowledge of Guiness records would be about 40 years out of date (if I could remember it).
| lordsmurf posted 2009 May 28 15:39 | ||||
| I've never understood the need to record who has the biggest yarn ball, or who ate the biggest cheese cracker. | ||||
| Nelson37 posted 2009 May 28 21:02 | ||||
| IIRC, the book was started because the author saw someone killed in a bar fight after an argument over one of these "records".
Mostly oddball trivia, some interesting, much of it kinda disgusting. Good material for the Reading Room.

| Isn't it spelled Guinness (for both)?
At any rate, if there is a Guinness world record for "Fastest person to become an alcoholic", and the Guinness brewery wants to sponsor me, I'm up bright and early for this challenge. :salut: Of course, it would be for the pure sake of a wonderful business arrangement. :P
| handyguy posted 2009 May 29 11:18 | ||||
| I thought Ripley's Believe it or Not was more interesting. | ||||
| yoda313 posted 2009 May 31 08:03 | ||||
| Wow the "no I don't care" is leading over the "I want beer" choice. What happened? It's only at 26%????
Should I start a new poll on who drinks beer here???? EDIT - I decided to start one. Go ahead and sound off!
| handyguy posted 2009 May 31 10:33 | ||||
| The old book was better, the newer ones have some censorship. They used to keep a listing of the youngest person to give birth. But they don't want to encourage that so they drop topics like that or other risky things. |
